We investigate the dielectric response of single-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix by using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. Frequency-dependent real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function are measured experimentally in the terahertz regime. The low-frequency phonons of carbon nanotubes, though predicted theoretically, are directly observed for the first time at frequencies 0.26, 0.60, and 0.85 THz. Further, a broad resonance is observed at 1.15 THz associated with the longitudinal acoustic mode of vibration of straight-chain segments of the long polymeric molecules in the film. The latter is observed at 1.24 THz for a pristine polymer film and has been used to derive the size of crystalline lamellae in the film.

The need for high purity materials for the growth of epitaxial layers of GaAs and the limitations of present source materials are discussed. A for purifying bulk quantitites of GaAs using chemical vapour transport is presented. GaAs is contained in a silica capsule which has a small orifice allow movement of gas between inside and outside. The capsule is contained in a heated tube and hydrogen chloride is used as the transporting agent. Growth rates of 0.1 g/h have been obtained and evidence for the purification is presented along with a discussion of the principles involved. The potentialities of the method for both purification and for the growth of single crystal substrate material are stressed.--AA

Pyrolysis of thiophene over nickel nanoparticles dispersed on silica is shown to yield Y-junction carbon nanotubes with smaller diameters than those obtained by the pyrolysis of organometallic-thiophene mixtures. In the presence of water vapour, the pyrolysis of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures yields single-walled nanotubes, as well as relatively narrow-diameter carbon nanotubes with Y-junctions. Pyrolysis-of organometallic-hydrocarbon mixtures, in the absence of water vapour, only gives nanotubes with T- and Y-junctions.

In the present paper, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to evaluate the length dependent in-plane stiffness of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The SWCNT is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam and is analyzed for various boundary conditions to evaluate the length dependent in-plane stiffness. It has been found that the nonlocal scaling parameter has a significant effect on the length dependent in-plane stiffness of SWCNTs. It has been observed that as the nonlocal scale parameter increases the stiffness ratio of SWCNT decreases. In nonlocality, the cantilever SWCNT has high in-plane stiffness as compared to the simply-supported and the clamped cases.

Individual carbon nanotubes being substantially smaller than the wavelength of light, are not much responsive to optical manipulation. Here we demonstrate how decorating single-walled carbon nanotubes with palladium particles makes optical trapping and manipulation easier. Palladium decorated nanotubes (Pd/SWNTs) have higher effective dielectric constant and are trapped at much lower laser power level with greater ease. In addition, we report the transportation of Pd/SWNTs using an asymmetric line trap. Using this method carbon nanotubes can be transported in any desired direction with high transportation speed. Five new gallium arsenate compounds C2N2H10]Ga(H2AsO4)(HAsO4)(2)]center dot H2O, I; C2N2H10]Ga(OH)(AsO4)](2), II; C2N2H10]GaF(AsO4)](2), III; C3N2H12]Ga(OH)(AsO4)](2), IV; Ga2F3(AsO4)(HAsO4)]center dot 2H(3)O, V, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and the structures determined employing single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. All the structures consist of octahedral gallium and tetrahedral arsenate units connected together forming a hierarchy of structures. Thus, one- (I), two- (II and IV) and three-dimensionally (III and V) extended structures have been observed. The Ga-O(H)/F-Ga connectivity in some of the structures suggests the coordination requirements posed by the octahedral gallium in these compounds. The observation of only one type of secondary building unit in the structures of III (SBU-4) and V (spiro-5) is unique and noteworthy. All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques that include powder XRD, IR, and TGA. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The excellent metal support interaction between palladium (Pd) and titanium nitride (TiN) is exploited in designing an efficient anode material. Pd-TN, that could be useful for direct ethanol fuel cell in alkaline media. The physicochemical and electrochemical characterization of the Pd-TiN/electrolyte interface reveals an efficient oxidation of ethanol coupled with excellent stability of the catalyst under electrochemical conditions. Characterization of the interface using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ FITR) shows the production CO2 at low overvoltages revealing an efficient cleaving of the C-C bond. The performance comparison of Pd supported on TiN (Pd-TiN) with that supported on carbon (Pd-C) clearly demonstrates the advantages of TiN support over carbon. A positive chemical shift of Pd (3d) binding energy confirms the existence of metal support interaction between pd and TiN, which in turn helps weaken the Pd-CO synergetic bonding interaction. The remarkable ability of TiN to accumulate -OH species on its surface coupled with the strong adhesion of Pd makes TiN an active support material for electrocatalysts.

We have measured the frequency-dependent real index of refraction and extinction coefficient (and hence the complex dielectric function) of a free-standing double-walled carbon nanotube film of thickness 200 nm by using terahertz time domain spectroscopy in the frequency range 0.1 to 2.5 THz. The real index of refraction and extinction coefficient have very high values of approximately 52 and 35, respectively, at 0.1 THz, which decrease at higher frequencies. Two low-frequency phonon modes of the carbon nanotubes at 0.45 and 0.75 THz were clearly observed for the first time in the real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function along with a broad resonance centred at around 1.45 THz, the latter being similar to that in single-walled carbon nanotubes assigned to electronic excitations. Our experiments bring out a possible application of double-walled carbon nanotube films as a neutral density filter in the THz range.

Characterization of silver- and gold-related defects in gallium arsenide is carried out. These impurities were introduced during the thermal diffusion process and the related defects are characterized by deep-level transient spectroscopy and photoluminescence. The silver-related center in GaAs shows a 0.238 eV photoluminescence line corresponding to no-phonon transition, whereas its thermal ionization energy is found to be 0.426 eV. The thermal activation energy of the gold-related center in GaAs is 0.395 eV, but there is no corresponding luminescence signal.

High-quality GaN epilayers were grown on Si (1 1 1) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using a new growth process sequence which involved a substrate nitridation at low temperatures, annealing at high temperatures, followed by nitridation at high temperatures, deposition of a low-temperature buffer layer, and a high-temperature overgrowth. The material quality of the GaN films was also investigated as a function of nitridation time and temperature. Crystallinity and surface roughness of GaN was found to improve when the Si substrate was treated under the new growth process sequence. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) measurement results indicate that the GaN film grown by the new process sequence has less tensile stress and optically good. The surface and interface structures of an ultra thin silicon nitride film grown on the Si surface are investigated by core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and it clearly indicates that the quality of silicon nitride notably affects the properties of GaN growth. In the present study, titanium nitride which shows exceptional stability, extreme corrosion resistance, good electronic conductivity and adhesion behaviour is used to support platinum particles and then used for methanol oxidation in an alkaline medium. The catalyst shows very good CO tolerance for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol. In situ infrared spectroelectrochemical data show the remarkable ability of TiN to decompose water at low over potentials leading to -OH type functional groups on its surface which in turn help in alleviating the carbon monoxide poisoning associated with methanol oxidation. TiN supported catalysts are found to be very good in terms of long term stability, exchange current density and stable currents at low over voltages. Supporting evidence from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data and cyclic voltammetry clearly demonstrates the usefulness of TiN supported Pt catalysts for efficient methanol oxidation in alkaline media.

It is well-known that the properties of semiconductor materials including gallium arsenide are controlled by defects and impurities. The characterization of these defects is important not only for better understanding of the solid state phenomena but also for improved reliability and performance of electronic devices. We have been investigating the defects in gallium arsenide for several years using deep level transient spectroscopy, photoconductivity, transient photoconductivity, photoluminescence etc. Results drawn from our recent studies are presented here to illustrate some of the problems concerning transition metal impurities, process-induced defects, occurrence of intracentre transitions and metastability of deep levels in gallium arsenide.

Ultra thin films of pure silicon nitride were grown on a Si (1 1 1) surface by exposing the surface to radio-frequency (RF) nitrogen plasma with a high content of nitrogen atoms. The effect of annealing of silicon nitride surface was investigated with core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The Si 2p photoelectron spectra reveals a characteristic series of components for the Si species, not only in stoichiometric Si3N4 (Si4+) but also in the intermediate nitridation states with one (Si1+) or three (Si3+) nitrogen nearest neighbors. The Si 2p core-level shifts for the Si1+, Si3+, and Si4+ components are determined to be 0.64, 2.20, and 3.05 eV, respectively. In annealed sample it has been observed that the Si4+ component in the Si 2p spectra is significantly improved, which clearly indicates the crystalline nature of silicon nitride. The high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) studies showed a significant improvement of the crystalline qualities and enhancement of the optical properties of GaN grown on the stoichiometric Si3N4 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Nanostructured carbon nitride films were prepared by pyrolysis assisted chemical vapour deposition(CVD). A two zone furnace with a temperature profile having a uniform temperature over a length of 20 cm length has been designed and developed. The precursor Azabenzimidazole was taken in a quartz tube and evaporated at 400 degrees C. The dense vapours enter the pyrolysis zone kept at a desired temperature and deposit on the quartz substrates. The FTIR spectrum of the prepared samples shows peaks at 1272 cm(-1) (C-N stretching) and 1600 cm(-1) (C=N) confirms the bonding of nitrogen with carbon. Raman D and G peaks, are observed at 1360 cm(-1) and 1576 cm(-1) respectively. XPS core level spectra of C 1s and N 1s show the formation of pi bonding between carbon and nitrogen atoms. The size of the nano crystals estimated from the SEM images and XRD is similar to 100 nm. In some regions of the sample a maximum of 57 atom % of nitrogen has been observed.
