We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. Dodecylsulphate-intercalated zinc hydroxysalt, Zn-5(OH)(8)(DS)(2)center dot mH(2)O delaminates to give monolayer colloidal dispersions in alcohols such as 1-butanol and ethylene glycol. The extent of delamination and the stability of the colloidal dispersion are comparable to those of layered double hydroxides. The solvothermal decomposition of the colloidal dispersion of the hydroxysalt in ethylene glycol yields a bimodal ZnO having a nanotubular structure decorated with nanosheets. Cytokinins induced haustoria formation in excised 10-mm segments ofCuscuta vine, the subapical 25-to-50-mm region being most responsive, producing a mean of 4–6 haustoria per segment. The order of effectiveness of cytokinins continuously applied (72 h) was 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) ges isopentenyladenine (iP) Gt zeatin (Z). Ribosides of BA and Z were as effective as the bases, whereas riboside of iP ([9R]iP) was half as effective as iP. Haustoria induction was influenced by weather and seasonal conditions at the time of vine collection; materials obtained on warm, sunny days responded better than those obtained on rainy, cloudy, or cool days. Haustoria were induced equally well all around the segment, and no thigmostimulus was needed for induction. p ]A 10-min pulse of 100 mgrM BA induced half as many haustoria as a 60-min pulse or continuous application of BA. White light inhibited haustoria induction elicited by a short (30-min) pulse of BA, whereas a longer (120-min) BA application overcame this light inhibition. Auxins (IAA or NAA, 1–10 mgrM), gibberellin (GA3, 1–10 mgrM), ethylene (as ethrel, 10–100 mgrM), and abscisic acid (ABA, 100 mgrM) were individually inhibitory (60–80%) with respect to haustoria induction when given continuously with 50 mgrM BA. A 60-min pulse of auxins (10 mgrM), GA3 (100 mgrM), or ethrel (10 mgrM), given at various time intervals during or after a 60-min pulse of 100 mgrM BA, showed that inhibition was maximal (70–95%) between 4 and 16 h of BA application and negligible (GA3) or much reduced (auxin, ethrel) at 20 h, indicating a ldquocommitmentrdquo to haustoria formation by this time.

Copper(II) complexes of ethylene/propylene-bis(acetylacetoneimine), Cu(baen) or Cu(bapn), react quickly and quantitatively in aqueous methanol at the methine position with arene diazonium ions in a stepwise manner to yield mono- and di-substituted copper(II) complexes. All the complexes are paramagnetic with μeff∼1.88 B.M. In all the complexes the diazo substituted part of the ligand coordinates to the metal through the agr-nitrogen of the azo group and the imine nitrogen, forming glyoxaliminearylhydrazone type of ligand system. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, electronic, esr, ir and mass spectroscopic methods.

The thermal decomposition of three commercial samples of carboxy-terminated polybutadiene (PBCT) resins was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at heating rates varying from 2° to 100°C/min. Kinetic parameters of the decomposition process at different heating rates were evaluated by means of the Fuoss method.1 The decomposition process and the activation energy values are found to be dependent on heating rate. Mass-spectrometric analysis of the decomposition products shows that the pyrolysis products of PBCT resins are mainly low molecular weight hydrocarbons: ethylene, acetylene, butadiene, propadiene, vinylcyclohexene, etc. The rates of evolution of these hydrocarbon products vary with the carboxy content of the PBCT resin. Based on this, a carbonium ion mechanism has been suggested for the thermal decomposition. The data generated from this work are of importance for a consideration of the mechanism of combustion of composite solid propellants based on PBCT binders.

Two series of flame retardant polymers, viz. polyarylazo phosphate and phosphoramide esters, were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene with various aryl phosphorodichlorides and aryl phosphoramidic dichlorides. They were characterized by i.r. 1H-, 13C- and 31P-NMR spectroscopy. The molar mass, thermal and flammability studies were carried out by viscometry, thermogravimetry and limiting oxygen index respectively to examine the influence of the phosphate and phosphoramide linkages. The polyphosphoramide esters possess better thermal and flammability characteristics than the polyphosphate esters.

Reactions of [PdIVB-(AI)2]++ [PdIICl4]-- (i) B-(AI)2 = dianion of N,N'-ethylene-/i-propylene-/n-propylene-bis(acetyl-acetoneimine) with some π-acceptor ligands, aliphatic primary amines and nitrosating reagents have been investigated. In all these reactions except nitrosation, 1:1 adducts having the formula, [PdIVB-(AI)2.X] [PdIICl4] [X = triphenylphosphine (TPP), triphenylarsine (TPA), pyridine (Py), methylamine (CH3NH2) or ethylamine (C2H5NH2)] are obtained. The formation of these complexes is associated with a bond isomerization - from Pd-Cxo-π -allylic bond prevailing in [PdIVB-(AI)2]2+ to PdIV-O bonding.Reaction of (i) with nitrosating reagents reduces PdIV to PdII and subsequently transform the γ-CH group, into an ambidentate isonitroso group (°C = NOH). The latter enters into coordination with PdII by dislodging the already coordinated carbonyl group. Further, selective nitrosation (mono- and dinitrosation) has been carried out by controlling the amount of the nitrosating reagent and the reaction time. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and ir spectral data.

C60·TDAE = tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene) with a Tc of not, vert, similar 16K is probably the best example of an organic molecular ferromagnet known to date. Based on ESR studies, we demonstrate that C60·TDAE is a quasi one-dimensional spin one-half Heisenberg ferromagnet, with the C60 units being entirely responsible for the magnetism. C60-C60 interactions responsible for superconductivity in alkali metal doped C60 seem to be essential for the magnetism of C60·TDAE as well.

We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). Polyelectrolyte capsules composed of weak polyelectrolytes are introduced as a simple and efficient system for spontaneous encapsulation of low molecular weight water-soluble drugs. Polyelectrolyte capsules were prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembling of weak polyelectrolytes, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly (methacrylic acid) (PMA) on polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) doped CaCO3 particles followed by core removal with ethylene-diaminetetraacetic add (EDTA). The loading process was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) using tetramethylrhodamineisothiocyanate labeled dextran (TRITC-dextran) as a fluorescent probe. The intensity of fluorescent probe inside the capsule decreased with increase in cross-linking time. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (a model water-soluble drug) was spontaneously deposited into PAH/PMA capsules and their morphological changes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The quantitative study of drug loading was also elucidated which showed that drug loading increased with initial drug concentration, but decreased with increase in pH. The loaded drug was released in a sustained manner for 6 h, which could be further extended by cross-linking the capsule wall. The released drug showed significant antibacterial activity against E. coli. These findings indicate that such capsules can be potential carriers for water-soluble drugs in sustained/controlled drug delivery applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The nonviral vector based gene delivery approach is attractive due to advantages associated with molecular-level modifications suitable for optimization of vector properties. In a new class of nonviral gene delivery systems, we herein report the potential of poly(ether Mine) (PETIM) dendrimers to mediate an effective gene delivery function. PETIM dendrimer, constituted with tertiary amine branch points, n-propyl ether linkers and primary amines at their peripheries, exhibits significantly reduced toxicities, over a broad concentration range. The dendrimer complexes pDNA effectively, protects DNA from endosomal damages, and delivers to the cell nucleus. Gene transfection studies, utilizing a reporter plasmid pEGFP-C1 and upon complexation with dendrimer, showed a robust expression of the encoded protein. The study shows that PETIM dendrimers are hitherto unknown novel gene delivery vectors, combining features of poly(ethylene imine)-based polymers and dendrimers, yet are relatively nontoxic and structurally precise.

We describe in this paper the synthesis and characterization of a new layered phosphate, MoOPO4 . 2H(2)O (I), and its intercalation chemistry. The phosphate I, crystallizing in a tetragonal structure (a = 6.375(7), c = 7.80(1) Angstrom, and Z = 2) similar to that of VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, has been synthesized by the reduction of MoO2(HPO4). H2O (II) using ethylene glycol in an CH3CN medium at similar to 60 degrees C. Interestingly, I could be readily oxidized back to II using Br-2 in CH3CN at room temperature. Considering the close structural relationship existing between I and II, it is likely that the reduction and oxidation of the phosphates proceed by a topotactic mechanism. I is a novel layered host intercalating a variety of organic bases such as n-alkylamines, pyridine, and aniline, mainly through an acid-base interaction. Unlike VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, I does not exhibit reductive intercalation reactivity.

Background: Sobemoviruses are a group of RNA plant viruses that have a narrow host range. They are characterized in vitro by their stability, high thermal inactivation point and longevity. The three-dimensional structure of only one virus belonging to this group, southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV), is known. Structural studies on sesbania mosaic virus (SMV), which is closely related to SBMV, will provide details of the molecular interactions that are likely to be important in the stability and assembly of sobemoviruses. Results: We have determined the three-dimensional structure of SMV at 3 Angstrom resolution. The polypeptide fold and quaternary organization are very similar to those of SBMV. The capsid consists of sixty icosahedral asymmetric units, each comprising three copies of a chemically identical coat protein subunit, which are designated as A, B and C and are in structurally different environments. Four cation-binding sites have been located in the icosahedral asymmetric unit. Of these, the site at the quasi-threefold axis is not found in SBMV. Structural differences are observed in loops and regions close to this cation-binding site. Preliminary studies on ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) treated crystals suggest asymmetry in removal of the quasi-equivalent cations at the AB, BC, and AC subunit interfaces. Conclusions: Despite the overall similarity between SMV and SBMV in the nature of the polypeptide fold, these viruses show a number of differences in intermolecular interactions. The polar interactions at the quasi-threefold axis are substantially less in SMV and positively charged residues on the RNA-facing side of the protein and in the N-terminal arm are not particularly well conserved. This suggests that protein-RNA interactions are likely to be different between the two viruses.
