In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics of thermally developing magnetohydroclynamic flow of nanofluid through microchannel are delineated by following a semi analytical approach. The combined influences of pressure driven flow, electroosmotic transport and magnetic field is taken into account for the analysis of the complex microscale thermal transport processes. Solutions for the normalized temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations, considering the simultaneous interplay of electrokinetic effects (electroosmosis), magnetic effects, Joule heating and viscous dissipation are obtained, for constant wall temperature condition. Particular attention is paid to assess the role of nanolluids in altering the transport phenomena, through variations in the effective nanoparticle volume fractions, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate phases. It is observed that magnetohydrodynamic effect reduces advective transport of the liquid resulting in gradual reduction of heat transfer. Increase in nanoparticle volume fraction shows decrease in heat transfer. Similar effects are observed with increase in aggregate sizes of the nanoparticles. The effect of the nanofluids on system irreversibility is also studied through entropy generation analysis due to flow and heat transfer in the microchannel. Total entropy generation is found to be dominant at the thermally developing region of the microchannel, whereas it drops sharply at the thermally developed region. Presence of nanoparticles in the base fluid reduces the total entropy generation in the microchannel, thereby indicating decrease in thermodynamic irreversibility with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction. One of the existing issues in implant failure of orthopedic biomaterials is the toxicity induced by the fine particles released during long term use in vivo, leading to acute inflammatory response. In developing a new class of piezobiocomposite to mimic the integrated electrical and mechanical properties of bone, bone-mimicking physical properties as well as in vitro cytocompatibility properties have been achieved with spark plasma sintered hydroxyapatite (HA)-barium titanate (BaTiO3) composites. However, the presence of BaTiO3 remains a concern towards the potential toxicity effect. To address this issue, present work reports the first result to conclusively confirm the non-toxic effect of HA-BaTiO3 piezobiocomposite nanoparticulates, in vivo. Twenty BALB/c mice were intraarticularly injected at their right knee joints with different concentrations of HA-BaTiO3 composite of up to 25 mg/ml. The histopathological examination confirmed the absence of any trace of injected particles or any sign of inflammatory reaction in the vital organs, such as heart, spleen, kidney and liver at 7 days post-exposure period. Rather, the injected nanoparticulates were found to be agglomerated in the vicinity of the knee joint, surrounded by macrophages. Importantly, the absence of any systemic toxicity response in any of the vital organs in the treated mouse model, other than a mild local response at the site of delivery, was recorded. The serum biochemical analyses using proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta) also complimented to the non-immunogenic response to injected particulates. Altogether, the absence of any inflammatory/ adverse reaction will open up myriad of opportunities for BaTiO3 based piezoelectric implantable devices in biomedical applications.

A new stabilization scheme, based on a stochastic representation of the discretized field variables, is proposed with a view to reduce or even eliminate unphysical oscillations in the mesh-free numerical simulations of systems developing shocks or exhibiting localized bands of extreme deformation in the response. The origin of the stabilization scheme may be traced to nonlinear stochastic filtering and, consistent with a class of such filters, gain-based additive correction terms are applied to the simulated solution of the system, herein achieved through the element-free Galerkin method, in order to impose a set of constraints that help arresting the spurious oscillations. The method is numerically illustrated through its Applications to inviscid Burgers' equations, wherein shocks may develop as a result of intersections of the characteristics, and to a gradient plasticity model whose response is often characterized by a developing shear band as the external load is gradually increased. The potential of the method in stabilized yet accurate numerical simulations of such systems involving extreme gradient variations in the response is thus brought forth. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A novel and highly sensitive sensing strategy for the detection of organophosphorus compounds (OPs) based on the catalytic reaction of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and acetylcholine (ATCh) during the modulated synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been developed. The enzymatic hydrolysis of ATCh by AChE yields thiocholine (TCh), which induces the aggregation of AgNPs during synthesis, and the absorption peak at 382 nm corresponding to AgNPs decreases. The enzymatic reaction can be regulated by OPs, which can covalently bind to the active site of AChE and decrease the TCh formation, thereby decreasing the aggregation and significantly enhancing the absorption peak at 382 nm. The proposed system achieved good linearity and limits of detection of 0.078 nM and 2.402 nM for trichlorfon and malathion, respectively, by UV-visible spectroscopy. Further, the sensitivity of the proposed system was demonstrated through the determination of OPs in different spiked real samples. The described work shows the potential application for further development of a colorimetric sensor for other OP pesticide detection during the synthesis of AgNPs using enzyme-based assays.
