The tie lines between (CoXMg1−X)O solid solution with rock salt structure and orthosilicate solid solution (CoYMg1−Y)-Si0.5O2, and between orthosilicate and metasilicate (CoZMg1-Z)SiO3 crystalline solutions, have been determined experimentally at 1373 K. The compositions of coexisting phases have been determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and lattice parameter measurement on equilibrated samples. The metasilicate solid solution exists only for 0 > Z > 0.213. The activity of CoO in the rock salt solid solution was determined as a function of composition and temperature in the range of 1023 to 1373 K using a solid-state galvanic cell: Pt, (CoXMg1−X)O+Co|(Y2O3)ZrO2|Co+CoO, Pt The free energy of mixing of (CoXMg1−X)O crystalline solution can be expressed by the equation ΔGE=X(1 −X)[(6048 − 2.146T)X+ (8745 − 3.09T)(1 −X)] J·mol−1 The thermodynamic data for the rock salt phase is combined with information on interphase partitioning of Co and Mg to generate the mixing properties for the ortho- and metasilicate solid solutions. For the orthosilicate solution (CoYMg1 −Y)Si0.5O2 at 1373 K, the excess Gibbs free energy of mixing is given by the relation ΔGE=Y(1 −Y)[2805Y+ 3261(1 −Y)] J·mol−1 For the metasilicate solution (CoZMg1 −Z)SiO3 at the same temperature, the excess free energy can be expressed by the relation ΔGE=Z(1 −Z)[2570Z+ 3627(1 −Z)] J·mol−1

The design and operation of the minimum cost classifier, where the total cost is the sum of the measurement cost and the classification cost, is computationally complex. Noting the difficulties associated with this approach, decision tree design directly from a set of labelled samples is proposed in this paper. The feature space is first partitioned to transform the problem to one of discrete features. The resulting problem is solved by a dynamic programming algorithm over an explicitly ordered state space of all outcomes of all feature subsets. The solution procedure is very general and is applicable to any minimum cost pattern classification problem in which each feature has a finite number of outcomes. These techniques are applied to (i) voiced, unvoiced, and silence classification of speech, and (ii) spoken vowel recognition. The resulting decision trees are operationally very efficient and yield attractive classification accuracies.

Water brings its remarkable thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies in the pure liquid state to biological world where water molecules face a multitude of additional interactions that frustrate its hydrogen bond network. Yet the water molecules participate and control enormous number of biological processes in manners which are yet to be understood at a molecular level. We discuss thermodynamics, structure, dynamics and properties of water around proteins and DNA, along with those in reverse micelles. We discuss the roles of water in enzyme kinetics, in drug-DNA intercalation and in kinetic-proof reading ( the theory of lack of errors in biosynthesis). We also discuss how water may play an important role in the natural selection of biomolecules. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The experimental determination of the magnetic ground state of triangular lattice anti-ferromagnet LiNiO2 is an intriguing problem as the system is prone to be Li deficient. We have been successful in preparing nearly stoichiometric LiNiO2 showing an anti-ferromagnetic ground state with an ordering temperature similar to 12 K. As the Li deficiency increases the sample exhibits spin glass behavior evidenced by a shift in the spin glass freezing temperature as a function of frequency in the ac susceptibility studies. As the Li deficiency crosses a critical limit, the sample becomes ferromagnetic in nature. We are able to tune the ferromagnetic transition temperature up to 240 K by varying the Li content. Finally, we have constructed a magnetic phase diagram. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3675997]

We investigate the relaxation dynamics of photogenerated carriers in silicon nanowires consisting of a crystalline core and a surrounding amorphous shell, using femtosecond time-resolved differential reflectivity and transmission spectroscopy at 3.15 eV and 1.57 eV photon energies. The complex behaviour of the differential transmission and reflectivity transients is the mixed contributions from the crystalline core and the amorphous silicon on the nanowire surface and the substrate where competing effects of state-filling and photoinduced absorption govern the carrier dynamics. Faster relaxation rates are observed on increasing the photogenerated carrier density. Independent experimental results on crystalline silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) help us in separating the contributions from the carrier dynamics in crystalline core and the amorphous regions in the nanowire samples. Further, single-beam z-scan nonlinear transmission experiments at 1.57 eV in both open- and close-aperture configurations yield two-photon absorption coefficient beta (similar to 3 cm/GW) and nonlinear refraction coefficient gamma (-2.5 x 10 (-aEuro parts per thousand 4) cm(2)/GW).

We present a comprehensive numerical study of spiral-and scroll-wave dynamics in a state-of-the-art mathematical model for human ventricular tissue with fiber rotation, transmural heterogeneity, myocytes, and fibroblasts. Our mathematical model introduces fibroblasts randomly, to mimic diffuse fibrosis, in the ten Tusscher-Noble-Noble-Panfilov (TNNP) model for human ventricular tissue; the passive fibroblasts in our model do not exhibit an action potential in the absence of coupling with myocytes; and we allow for a coupling between nearby myocytes and fibroblasts. Our study of a single myocyte-fibroblast (MF) composite, with a single myocyte coupled to N-f fibroblasts via a gap-junctional conductance G(gap), reveals five qualitatively different responses for this composite. Our investigations of two-dimensional domains with a random distribution of fibroblasts in a myocyte background reveal that, as the percentage P-f of fibroblasts increases, the conduction velocity of a plane wave decreases until there is conduction failure. If we consider spiral-wave dynamics in such a medium we find, in two dimensions, a variety of nonequilibrium states, temporally periodic, quasiperiodic, chaotic, and quiescent, and an intricate sequence of transitions between them; we also study the analogous sequence of transitions for three-dimensional scroll waves in a three-dimensional version of our mathematical model that includes both fiber rotation and transmural heterogeneity. We thus elucidate random-fibrosis-induced nonequilibrium transitions, which lead to conduction block for spiral waves in two dimensions and scroll waves in three dimensions. We explore possible experimental implications of our mathematical and numerical studies for plane-, spiral-, and scroll-wave dynamics in cardiac tissue with fibrosis.

The terms phase transformation, polymorphism, disorder, isosterism, and isostructuralism are often the keywords used in the design and engineering of molecular crystals. Three benzoylcarvacryl thiourea derivatives with -NH-C(S)-NH-C(O)-] cores generate molecular crystals, which provide the basis for exploring a common link between the structures related by aforementioned terms. The apparent ``origin'' of all these structural modifications has been traced to the formation of a planar molecular dimeric chain built with homomeric R-2(2)(12) and R-2(2)(8) synthons occurring in tandem, one formed with N-H center dot center dot center dot O and the other with N-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds.

We interpret the recent discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs-like state in the context of a two-Higgs-doublet model with a heavy fourth sequential generation of fermions, in which one Higgs doublet couples only to the fourth-generation fermions, while the second doublet couples to the lighter fermions of the first three families. This model is designed to accommodate the apparent heaviness of the fourth-generation fermions and to effectively address the low-energy phenomenology of a dynamical electroweak-symmetry-breaking scenario. The physical Higgs states of the model are, therefore, viewed as composites primarily of the fourth-generation fermions. We find that the lightest Higgs, h, is a good candidate for the recently discovered 125 GeV spin-zero particle, when tan beta similar to O(1), for typical fourth-generation fermion masses of M-4G = 400-600 GeV, and with a large t-t' mixing in the right-handed quark sector. This, in turn, leads to BR(t' -> th) similar to O(1), which drastically changes the t' decay pattern. We also find that, based on the current Higgs data, this two-Higgs-doublet model generically predicts an enhanced production rate (compared to the Standard Model) in the pp -> h -> tau tau channel, and reduced rates in the VV -> h -> gamma gamma and p (p) over bar /pp -> V -> hV -> Vbb channels. Finally, the heavier CP-even Higgs is excluded by the current data up to m(H) similar to 500 GeV, while the pseudoscalar state, A, can be as light as 130 GeV. These heavier Higgs states and the expected deviations from the Standard Model din some of the Higgs production channels can be further excluded or discovered with more data.

Luteal insufficiency affects fertility and hence study of mechanisms that regulate corpus luteum (CL) function is of prime importance to overcome infertility problems. Exploration of human genome sequence has helped to study the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Clinical benefits of screening SNPs in infertility are being recognized well in recent times. Examining SNPs in genes associated with maintenance and regression of CL may help to understand unexplained luteal insufficiency and related infertility. Publicly available microarray gene expression databases reveal the global gene expression patterns in primate CL during the different functional state. We intend to explore computationally the deleterious SNPs of human genes reported to be common targets of luteolysin and luteotropin in primate CL Different computational algorithms were used to dissect out the functional significance of SNPs in the luteinizing hormone sensitive genes. The results raise the possibility that screening for SNPs might be integrated to evaluate luteal insufficiency associated with human female infertility for future studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The role of crystallite size and clustering in influencing the stability of the structures of a large tetragonality ferroelectric system 0.6BiFeO(3)-0.4PbTiO(3) was investigated. The system exhibits cubic phase for a crystallite size similar to 25 nm, three times larger than the critical size reported for one of its end member PbTiO3. With increased degree of clustering for the same average crystallite size, partial stabilization of the ferroelectric tetragonal phase takes place. The results suggest that clustering helps in reducing the depolarization energy without the need for increasing the crystallite size of free particles.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems divide the available bandwidth into orthogonal subchannels and exploit multiuser diversity and frequency selectivity to achieve high spectral efficiencies. However, they require a significant amount of channel state feedback for scheduling and rate adaptation and are sensitive to feedback delays. We develop a comprehensive analysis for OFDMA system throughput in the presence of feedback delays as a function of the feedback scheme, frequency-domain scheduler, and rate adaptation rule. Also derived are expressions for the outage probability, which captures the inability of a subchannel to successfully carry data due to the feedback scheme or feedback delays. Our model encompasses the popular best-n and threshold-based feedback schemes and the greedy, proportional fair, and round-robin schedulers that cover a wide range of throughput versus fairness tradeoff. It helps quantify the different robustness of the schedulers to feedback overhead and delays. Even at low vehicular speeds, it shows that small feedback delays markedly degrade the throughput and increase the outage probability. Further, given the feedback delay, the throughput degradation depends primarily on the feedback overhead and not on the feedback scheme itself. We also show how to optimize the rate adaptation thresholds as a function of feedback delay.

Temperature-time study of the magnetoelectric multiferroic (1-x)BiFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 by x-ray and electron diffraction on the reported morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions revealed that this MPB does not correspond to the equilibrium state. The MPB like state is rather of metastable nature and arise due to kinetic arrest of metastable rhombohedral (R3c) phase, along with the equilibrium tetragonal (P4mm) phase. The life time of the metastable R3c nuclei is very sensitive to composition and temperature, and nearly diverges at x -> 0.27. The MPB like state appears only if the system is cooled before the metastable R3c nuclei could vanish. These findings resolve the long standing controversy with regard to seemingly erratic phase formation behaviour reported by different groups and provides a rational basis for developing genuine equilibrium MPB compositions in this system for better piezoelectric properties. Thin films of bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles are fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly. The surface of BSA nanoparticles have two oppositely acting functional groups on the surface: amine (NH2) and carboxylate (COO-). The protonation and deprotonation of these functional groups at different pH vary the charge density on the particle surface, and entirely different growth can be observed by varying the nature of the complementary polymer and the pH of the particles. The complementary polymers used in this study are poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDAC) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The assembly of BSA nanoparticles based on electrostatic interaction with PDDAC suffers from the poor loading of the nanoparticles. The assembly with PAA aided by a hydrogen bonding interaction shows tremendous improvement in the growth of the assembly over PDDAC. Moreover, the pH of the BSA nanoparticles was observed to affect the loading of nanoparticles in the LbL assembly with PAA significantly.
