Hexagonal Dy(0.5)Y(0.5)MnO(3), a multiferroic rare-earth manganite with geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetism, has been investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Below 3.4 K magnetic order is observed on both the Mn (antiferromagnetic) and Dy (ferrimagnetic) sublattices that is identical to that of undiluted hexagonal DyMnO(3) at low temperature. The Mn moments undergo a spin reorientation transition between 3.4 K and 10 K, with antiferromagnetic order of the Mn sublattice persisting up to 70 K; the antiferromagnetic order in this phase is distinct from that observed in undiluted (h) DyMnO(3), yielding a qualitatively new phase diagram not seen in other hexagonal rare-earth manganites. A magnetic field applied parallel to the crystallographic c axis will drive a transition from the antiferromagnetic phase into the low-temperature ferrimagnetic phase with little hysteresis.

Specific heat, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, linear thermal expansion (LTE), and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction investigations of single crystals Fe(1+y) Te (0.06 <= y <= 0.15) reveal a splitting of a single, first-order transition for y <= 0.11 into two transitions for y >= 0.13. Most strikingly, all measurements on identical samples Fe(1.13)Te consistently indicate that, upon cooling, the magnetic transition at T(N) precedes the first-order structural transition at a lower temperature T(s). The structural transition in turn coincides with a change in the character of the magnetic structure. The LTE measurements along the crystallographic c axis display a small distortion close to T(N) due to a lattice striction as a consequence of magnetic ordering, and a much larger change at T(s). The lattice symmetry changes, however, only below T(s) as indicated by powder x-ray diffraction. This behavior is in stark contrast to the sequence in which the phase transitions occur in Fe pnictides.

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to study the surface nanostructure of the epitaxial film Nd2/3Sr1/3MnO3 that shows giant magnetoresistance. The surface morphology of the film consists of a number of overlapping platelets of about 30–35 Å diameter that grow at an angle of 35°–45° to the surface normal. The peak to peak height of the platelets are multiples of the c‐axis lattice parameter of 7.85 Å showing that the growth of the platelets takes place by the layer by layer addition of one formula unit. The mean surface roughness is about 10 Å. In the range of a few microns the film exhibits no defects or dislocations. The film is unstable in ambient atmosphere and tends to get covered by an adsorbate layer. Tip‐surface interactions cause the adsorbate to be dislodged exposing the surface nanostructure. The degradation of the film in real time when imaged in air was recorded. The adsorbates increase the surface roughness of the film.

We investigate the vortex behavior of YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers (La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3). The magnetization study on La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 trilayers conspicuously shows the presence of both ferromagnetic and diamagnetic phases. The magnetotransport study on the trilayers reveals a significant reduction in the activation energy (U) for the vortex motion in YBa2Cu3O7−δ. Besides, the “U” exhibits a logarithmic dependence on the applied magnetic field which directly indicates the existence of decoupled two-dimensional (2D) pancake vortices present in the CuO2 layers. The evidence of 2D decoupled vortex behavior in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 is believed to arise from (a) the weakening of superconducting coherence length along the c-axis and (b) enhanced intraplane vortex–vortex interaction due to the presence of ferromagnetic layers.

Novel ferroelectric bismuth vanadate, Bi2VO5.5 (BVO), thin films have been grown between lattice matched metallic LaNiO3 (LNO) layers deposited on SrTiO3 (STO) by the pulsed laser deposition technique. LNO/BVO/LNO/STO and Au/BVO/LNO/STO trilayer structures exhibited c‐oriented (001) growth of BVO. LNO has been found to be a good metallic electrode with sheet resistance ∼20 Ω in addition to aiding c‐axis oriented BVO growth. The dielectric constant, ϵr of LNO/BVO/LNO/STO, at 300 K was about 12. However, when an Au electrode was used on top of BVO/LNO/STO film, it showed a significant improvement in the dielectric constant (ϵr=123). The ferroelectric properties of BVO thin films have been confirmed by hysteresis behavior with a remnant polarization, Pr=4.6×10−8 C/cm2 and coercive field, Ec=23 kV/cm at 300 K.

In the present work, we report the growth of wurtzite InN epilayers on GaN/Si (1 1 1) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The growth parameters such as indium flux, substrate temperature and RF power affect the crystallographic and morphological properties of InN layers, which were evaluated using high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that excess indium (In) concentrations and surface roughness were increased with increase in In flux and growth temperature. The intensity of HRXRD (0 0 0 2) peak, corresponding to c-axis orientation has been increased and full width at half maxima (FWHM) has decreased with increase in RF power. It was found that highly c-axis oriented InN epilayers can be grown at 450 degrees C growth temperature, 450 W RF power and 1.30 x 10(-7) mbar In beam equivalent pressure (BEP). The energy gap of InN layers grown by optimizing growth conditions was determined by photoluminescence and optical absorption measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The change in thermodynamic quantities (e. g., entropy, specific heat etc.) by the application of magnetic field in the case of the high-T-c superconductor YBCO system is examined phenomenological by the Ginzburg-Landau theory of anisotropic type-II superconductors. An expression for the change in the entropy (Delta S) and change in specific heat (Delta C) in a magnetic field for any general orientation of an applied magnetic field B-a with respect to the crystallographic c-axis is obtained. The observed large reduction of specific heat anomaly just below the superconducting transition and the observed variation of entropy with magnetic field are explained quantitatively.

In this study, we present the spontaneous self-assembly of designed simplest aromatic cyclic dipeptides of (L-Phg-L-Phg) and (D-Phg-L-Phg) to form highly stable two-dimensional (2D) nano- and mesosheets with large lateral surface area. Various microscopy data revealed that the morphology of 2D mesosheets resembles the hierarchical natural materials with layered structure. Solution and solid-state NMR studies on cyclo(L-Phg-L-Phg) revealed the presence of strong (N-H-O) hydrogen-bonded molecular chains supported by aromatic pi-pi interactions to form 2D mesosheets. Interestingly, cyclo(D-Phg-L-Phg) self-assembles to form single-crystalline as well as non-crystalline 2D rhomboid sheets with large lateral dimension. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the stacking of (N-H-O) hydrogen-bonded molecular layers along c-axis supported by aromatic pi-pi interactions. The thermogravimetric analysis shows two transitions with overall high thermal stability attributed to layered hierarchy found in 2D mesosheets.

In the present study, asymmetric rolling was carried out for incorporating a shear component during the rolling at different temperatures, and was compared with conventional (symmetric) rolling. The microstructures were investigated using electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). The strain incorporated was compared with the help of grain orientation spread (GOS). GOS was eventually used as a criterion to partition the microstructure for separating the deformed and the dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains. The texture of the partitioned DRX grains was shifted by similar to 30 degrees along the c-axis from the deformed grains. The mechanism of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) has been identified as continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR). The partitioned deformed grains for the higher temperature rolled specimens exhibited a texture similar to the room temperature rolled specimen. The asymmetric rolling introduces a shear component which shifts the texture fibre by similar to 5-10 degrees from the conventional rolling texture. This led to an increase in ductility with little compromise on strength. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulation, we have studied the effect of size and temperature on the strain induced phase transition of wurtzite CdSe nanowires. The wurtzite structure transforms into a five-fold coordinated structure under uniaxial strain along the c axis. Our results show that lower temperature and smaller size of the nanowires stabilize the five-fold coordinated phase which is not a stable structure in bulk CdSe. High reversibility of this transformation with a very small heat loss will make these nanowires suitable for building efficient nanodevices. The evolution of microstructure and texture in Hexagonal Close Pack commercially pure titanium has been studied in torsion in a strain rate regime of 0.001 to 1 s(-1). Free end torsion tests carried out on titanium rods indicated higher stress levels at higher strain rate but negligible change in the strain-hardening behaviour. There was a decrease in the intra-granular misorientation while a negligible change in the amount of contraction and extension twins was observed with increase in strain rate. The deformed samples showed a C-1 fibre (c-axis is first rotated 90 degrees in shear direction and then +30 degrees in shear plane direction) at all the strain rates. With the increase in strain rate, there was an increase in the intensity of the C-1 fibre and it became more heterogeneous with a strong {11(2)over-bar6}< 2(8)over-bar)63 > component. In the absence of extensive twinning, pyramidal < c+a > slip system is attributed for the observed deformation texture. The present investigation, therefore, substantiates the theoretical prediction of increase in strength of texture with strain rate in torsion.

In situ powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies on 3D micro-crystalline tin (II) sulfide (SnS) were carried out at different temperatures. While increasing temperature, the crystal structure of SnS remains stable as orthorhombic, whereas its lattice parameters and unit-cell volume are considerably varied. Further, these 3D micro-crystalline structures have showed a negative thermal expansion along the a-axis and positive expansion along the b- and c-axes. However, the overall drop along the a-axis of SnS crystals is nearly equal to their expansion along the c-axis. The observed changes in the structural properties of SnS micro-crystallites with temperature are discussed and reported.

We report on the novel flow sensing application of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy sensing element. Characterization of piezoelectric ZnO films deposited on Phynox (Elgiloy) substrate at different RF powers is discussed. ZnO films deposited at RF power of 100W were found to have fine c-axis orientation, possesses excellent surface morphology with lower rms surface roughness of 1.87 nm and maximum d(31) coefficient value 4.7 pm V-1. The thin cantilever strip of Phynox alloy with ZnO film as a sensing layer for flow sensing has been tested for flow rates ranging from 2 to 18 L min(-1). A detailed theoretical analysis of the experimental set-up showing the relationship between output voltage and force at a particular flow rate has been discussed. The sensitivity of now sensing element is similar to 18 mV/(L min(-1)) and typical response time is of the order of 20 m s. The sensing element is calibrated using in-house developed testing set-up. Lithium L-Ascorbate dihydrate (LLA) is a new metal organic nonlinear optical crystal belonging to the saccharide family. Single crystals of LLA were grown from aqueous solution. Solubility of the crystal has a positive temperature coefficient facilitating growth by slow cooling. Rietveld refinement was used to confirm the phase formation. The crystal has prismatic habit with (010), (001) and (10-1) prominent faces. Thermal analysis shows that the crystal is stable up to 102 degrees C. Transmission spectrum of the crystal extends from 302 nm to 1600 nm. Dielectric spectroscopic analysis revealed Cole Cole behaviour and prominent piezoelectric resonance peaks were observed in the range of 100-200 kHz. Second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of up to 2.56 times that of a phase matched KDP crystal was achieved when the (010) plate of LLA single crystal was rotated about the +ve c axis, by 9.4 degrees in the clockwise direction. We also observed SHG conical sections which were attributed to noncollinear phase matching. The observation of the third conical section suggests very high birefringence and large nonlinear coefficients. A detailed study of surface laser damage showed that the crystal has high multiple damage thresholds of 9.7 GW cm(-2) and 42 GW cm(-2) at 1064 nm and 532 nm radiation respectively. In this work, the fracture behavior of magnesium single crystals is studied by conducting experiments with notched three point bend specimens of three crystallographic orientations. In the first and second orientations, the c-axis is along the normal to the flat surface of the notch, while in the third it is aligned with the notch front. For all the orientations, in situ electron back scattered diffraction observations made around the notch root show profuse tensile twinning of {10 (1) over bar2} type. Further, in the first two orientations basal and prismatic slip traces are identified from optical metallography. The width of the most prominent twin saturates at around 120-150 mu m, while twins continue to nucleate farther away to accommodate plastic deformation. In all the orientations, crack initiation occurs before the attainment of peak load and the crack grows stably along twin-matrix interface before deflecting at twin-twin intersections. Results show that profuse tensile twinning is an important energy dissipating mechanism that enhances the fracture toughness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
