Three new compounds of bismuth, C4N2H10]center dotBi(C7H4NO4)(C7H3NO4)]center dot H2O, I, Bi(C5H3N2O4) (C5H2N2O4)], II, and Bi(mu(2)-OH)(C7H3NO4)], III, have been prepared by the reaction between bismuth nitrate and heterocyclic aromatic dicarboxylic acids, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid, and 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. The structures of all the compounds have linkages between Bi2O2 and the corresponding dicarboxylate forming a simple molecular unit in I, a bilayer arrangement in II, and a three-dimensional extended structure in III. The topological arrangement of the nodal building units in the structures indicates that a brucite-related layer (II) and fluorite-related arrangement (III) can be realized in these structures. By utilizing the secondary interactions, one can correlate the structure of III to a Kagome-related one. The observation of such classical inorganic related structures in the bismuth carboxylates is noteworthy. Lewis acid catalytic studies on the formation of ketal suggest the possible participatory role of the lone pair of electrons. All the compounds are characterized employing elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, and thermal studies.

Mechanism of ion transport in glasses continues to be incompletely understood. Several of the theoretical models in vogue fail to rationalize conductivity behaviour when d.c. and a.c. measurements are considered together. While they seem to involve the presence of at least two components in d.c. activation energy, experiments fail to reveal that feature. Further, only minor importance is given to the influence of structure of the glass on the ionic conductivity behaviour. In this paper, we have examined several general aspects of ion transport taking the example of ionically conducting glasses in pseudo binary, yNa(2)B(4)O(7)center dot(1-y) M (a) O (b) (with y = 0 center dot 25-0 center dot 79 and M (a) O (b) = PbO, TeO2 and Bi2O3) system of glasses which have also been recently characterized. Ion transport in them has been studied in detail. We have proposed that non-bridging oxygen (NBO) participation is crucial to the understanding of the observed conductivity behaviour. NBO-BO switching is projected as the first important step in ion transport and alkali ion jump is a subsequent event with a characteristically lower barrier which is, therefore, not observed in any study. All important observations in d.c. and a.c. transport in glasses are found consistent with this model.
Correlations between mechanical and photoluminescence properties in Eu doped sodium bismuth titanate

Nanoindentation technique is utilized to examine mechanical property variation in Eu doped Na0.5Bi0.5 TiO3 (NBT). Doping levels of Eu in NBT is systematically varied. Dilute doping results in a linear reduction in both modulus and hardness. At higher concentrations, a recovery of the mechanical properties (to undoped NBT values) is observed. These experimental trends mirror variations in the optical emission intensities with Eu concentration. Observed trends are rationalized on the basis of a model, which hypothesizes phase segregation beyond a critical Eu doping level. Such segregation leads to the formation of pure NBT, nano-Eu saturated NBT, and nano-mixed Eu oxides in the microstructure. Pure NBT is optically inactive, while saturated Eu:NBT is a much better emitter when compared to europium oxide. Hence beyond the critical concentration, luminescence signal comes primarily from the saturated Eu:NBT phase. The model presented is supported by nanoindentation, and spectroscopic results. Transparent glasses in CaO-Bi2O3-B2O3 system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) carried out on the as-quenched samples confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature respectively. The surface crystallization behaviour of these glasses with and without ultrasonic surface treatment (UST) was monitored using XRD, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The volume fraction, depth of crystallization and the (001) orientation factor for the heat treated samples with and without UST were compared. The ultrasonically-treated samples on subsequent heat treatment were found to crystallize at lower temperatures associated with the highest degree of orientation factor (0.95) in contrast with those of non-UST samples. These surface crystallized glasses were found to exhibit nonlinear optical behaviour emitting green light (532 nm) when they were exposed to the infrared radiation (1064 nm) using Nd:YAG laser.

We present the application of a bismuth modified exfoliated graphite electrode in the detection of arsenic in water. Bismuth film was electrodeposited onto an exfoliated graphite (EG) electrode at a potential of -600 mV. The modification of EG resulted in an increase in the electroactive surface area of the electrode and consequently peak current enhancement in Ru(NH3)(6)(2+/13+) redox probe. Square wave anodic stripping voltammetry was performed with the modified electrode (EG-Bi) in As (III) solutions at the optimum conditions of pH 6, deposition potential of -600 mV and pre-concentration time of 180s. The EG-Bi was able to detect As (III) to the limit of 5 mu g L-1 and was not susceptible to many interfering cations except Cu (II). The EG-Bi is low cost and easy to prepare. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. One new homoleptic Bi(dtc)(3)] (1) (dtc = 4-hydroxypiperdine dithiocarbamate) has been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, IR, UV-Vis, H-1 and C-13 spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The photoluminescence spectrum for the compound in DMSO solution was recorded. The crystal structure of 1 displayed distorted octahedral geometry around the Bi(III) center bonded through sulfur atoms of the dithiocarbamate ligands. TGA indicates that the compound decomposes to a Bi and Bi-S phase system. The Bi and Bi-S obtained from decomposition of the compound have been characterized by pXRD, EDAX and SEM. Solvothermal decomposition of 1 in the absence and presence of two different capping agents yielded three morphologically different Bi2S3 systems which were deployed as counter-electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The solidification behaviour is described of two pure metals (Bi and Ni) and two eutectic alloys (A1-Ge and AI-Cu) under nonequilibrium conditions, in particular the microsecond pulsed laser surface melting. The resolidification behaviour of bismuth shows that epitaxial regrowth is the dominant mechanism. For mixed grain size, regrowth of larger grains dominates the microstructure and can result in the development of texture. In the case of nickel, epitaxial growth has been noted. For lower energy pulse-melted pool, grain refinement takes place, indicating nucleation of fresh nickel grains. The A1-Ge eutectic alloy indicates the nucleation and columnar growth of a metastable monoclinic phase from the melt-substrate interface at a high power density laser irradiation. An equiaxed microstructure containing the same monoclinic phase is obtained at a lower power density laser irradiation. It is shown that the requirement of solution partition acts as a barrier to eutectic regrowth from the substrate. The laser-melted pool of A1-Cu eutectic alloy includes columnar growth of c~-A1 and 0-A12Cu phase followed by the dendritic growth of A12Cu phase with ct-Al forming at the interdendritic space. In addition, a banded microstructure was observed in the resolidified laser-melted pool.

The quaternary system Sb1bTe1bBi1bSe with small amounts of suitable dopants is of interest for the manufacture of thermoelectric modules which exhibit the Peltier and Seebeck effects. This property could be useful in the production of energy from the thermoelectric effect. Other substances are bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and Sb1bTe1bBi and compounds such as ZnIn2Se4. In the present paper the application of computer programs such as MIGAP of Kaufman is used to indicate the stability of the ternary limits of Sb1bTe1bBi within the temperature ranges of interest, namely 273 K to 300 K.

A compact clamp-type high pressure cell for carrying out electrical conductivity measurements on small solid samples of size 1 mm or less at pressures upto 8 GPa (i.e., 80 kbar) and for use down to 77 K has been designed and fabricated. The pressure generated in the sample region has been calibrated at room temperature against the polymorphic phase transitions of Bismuth and Ytterbium. The pressure relaxation of the clamp at low temperatures has been estimated by monitoring the electrical conductivity behavior of lead. We study the thermoelectric power under classically large magnetic field (TPM) in ultrathin films (UFs), quantum wires (QWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined III-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The TPM has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, stressed materials, bismuth and carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It is found taking quantum confined CdGeAs2, InAs, InSb, CdS, stressed n-InSb and Bi that the TPM increases with increasing film thickness and decreasing electron statistics exhibiting quantized nature for all types of quantum confinement. The TPM in CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing carrier concentration and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of the TPM for non-degenerate materials having parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test. In this paper, we study the thermoelectric power under strong magnetic field (TPSM) in quantum dots (QDs) of nonlinear optical, III-V, II-VI, GaP, Ge, Te, Graphite, PtSb2, zerogap, Lead Germanium Telluride, GaSb, stressed materials, Bismuth, IV-VI, II-V, Zinc and Cadmium diphosphides, Bi2Te3 and Antimony respectively. The TPSM in III-V, II-VI, IV-VI, HgTe/CdTe quantum well superlattices with graded interfaces and effective mass superlattices of the same materials together with the quantum dots of aforementioned superlattices have also been investigated in this context on the basis of respective carrier dispersion laws. It has been found that the TPSM for the said quantum dots oscillates with increasing thickness and decreases with increasing electron concentration in various manners and oscillates with film thickness, inverse quantizing magnetic field and impurity concentration for all types of superlattices with two entirely different signatures of quantization as appropriate in respective cases of the aforementioned quantized structures. The well known expression of the TPSM for wide-gap materials has been obtained as special case for our generalized analysis under certain limiting condition, and this compatibility is an indirect test of our generalized formalism. Besides, we have suggested the experimental method of determining the carrier contribution to elastic constants for nanostructured materials having arbitrary dispersion laws.

We investigate the photoemission from quantum wells (QWs) in ultrathin films (UFs) and quantum well wires (QWWs) of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law considering the anisotropies of the effective electron masses, the spin-orbit splitting constants and the presence of the crystal field splitting within the framework of k.p formalism. The results of quantum confined Ill-V compounds form the special cases of our generalized analysis. The photoemission has also been studied for quantum confined II-VI, n-GaP, n-Ge, PtSb2, stressed materials and Bismuth on the basis of respective dispersion relations. It has been found taking quantum confined CdGeAS(2), InAs, InSb, CdS, GaP, Ge, PtSb2, stressed n-InSb and B1 that the photoemission exhibits quantized variations with the incident photon energy, changing electron concentration and film thickness, respectively, for all types of quantum confinement. The photoemission from CNs exhibits oscillatory dependence with increasing normalized electron degeneracy and the signature of the entirely different types of quantum systems are evident from the plots. Besides, under certain special conditions, all the results for all the materials gets simplified to the well-known expression of photoemission from non-degenerate semiconductors and parabolic energy bands, leading to the compatibility test.

Bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5, BVO) thin films have been deposited by a pulsed laser ablation technique on platinized silicon substrates. The surface morphology of the BVO thin films has been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The optical properties of the BVO thin films were investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometric measurements in the 300–820 nm wavelength range. The refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k) and thickness of the BVO thin films have been obtained by fitting the ellipsometric experimental data in a four-phase model (air/BVOrough/BVO/Pt). The values of the optical constants n and k that were determined through multilayer analysis at 600 nm were 2.31 and 0.056, respectively. For fitting the ellipsometric data and to interpret the optical constants, the unknown dielectric function of the BVO films was constructed using a Lorentz model. The roughness of the films was modeled in the Brugmann effective medium approximation and the results were compared with the AFM observations.

We report on the dielectric proper-ties of bismuth aluminate and gallate with Bi:AI(Ga) ratio of 1: 1 and 12:1 prepared at high temperature and ambient pressure. These compounds crystallize in a noncentrosymmetric body-centered cubic structure (space group 123) with a similar to 10.18 angstrom rather than in the perovskite structure. This cubic phase is related to the gamma-Bi2O3 structure which has the actual chemical formula Bi-24(3+) (Bi3+Bi5+)O40-delta. In the aluminates and gallates studied by us, the Al and Ga ions are distributed over the 24f and 2a sites. These compounds exibit ferroclectric hysteresis at room temperature with a weak polarization. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ex-situ grown thin films of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) were deposited on platinum substrates using laser ablation technique. A low substrate-temperature-processing route was chosen to avoid any diffusion of bismuth into the Pt electrode. It was observed that the as grown films showed an oriented growth along the 'c'-axis (with zero spontaneous polarization). The as grown films were subsequently annealed to enhance crystallization. Upon annealing, these films transformed into a polycrystalline structure, and exhibited excellent ferroelectric properties. The switching was made to be possible by lowering the thickness without losing the electrically insulating behavior of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (P-r = 4 muC/cm(2) E-c = 90 kV/cm) in good agreement with the earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 190 and a dissipation factor of 0.02, which showed dispersion at low frequencies. The frequency dispersion was found to obey Jonscher's universal power law relation, and was attributed to the ionic charge hopping process according to earlier reports. The de transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior in the low voltage region, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge and resulted in non-linear current-voltage dependence.
