Cobalt(II) complexes of terpyridine bases Co(L)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1-3), where L is 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (ph-tpy in 1), 4'-(9-anthracenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (an-tpy in 2) and 4'-(1-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (py-tpy in 3), are prepared and their photo-induced DNA and protein cleavage activity and photocytotoxic property in HeLa cells studied. The 1 : 2 electrolytic and three-electron paramagnetic complexes show a visible band near 550 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes 1-3 show emission spectral bands at 355, 421 and 454 nm, respectively, when excited at 287, 368 and 335 nm. The quantum yield values for 1-3 in DMF-H2O (2 : 1 v/v) are 0.025, 0.060 and 0.28, respectively. The complexes are redox active in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The Co(III)-Co(II) and Co(II)-Co(I) couples appear as quasi-reversible cyclic voltammetric responses near 0.2 and -0.7 V vs. SCE, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b value of similar to 10(6) M-1. The complexes show chemical nuclease activity. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit oxidative cleavage of pUC19 DNA in UV-A and visible light. The DNA photocleavage reaction of 3 at 365 nm shows formation of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical species, while only hydroxyl radical formation is evidenced in visible light. Complexes 2 and 3 show non-specific photo-induced bovine serum albumin protein cleavage activity at 365 nm. The an-tpy and py-tpy complexes exhibit significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells on exposure to visible light giving IC50 values of 24.2 and 7.6 mu M, respectively. Live cell imaging study shows accumulation of the complexes in the cytosol of HeLa cancer cells.

The absorption spectrum in the visible range and the, ESR spectrum of vanadyl sulfate were lost on addition of diperoxovanadate. The V-51-NMR spectra revealed that diperoxovanadate was reduced to vanadate and its oligomers. With excess vanadyl, tetrameric vanadate was found to be the major product, During this reaction oxygen was released into the medium. The oxygen-release reaction was inhibited by a variety of organic ligands-imidazole, benzoate, formate, mannitol, ethanol, Tris, DMPO, malate, and asparagine. An oxygen-consuming reaction emerged at high concentrations of some of these compounds, e.g. benzoate and ethanol. Using DMPO as the spin-trap, an oxygen-radical species with a 1:2:2:1 type of ESR spectrum was detected in the reaction mixtures resulting from vanadyl oxidation by diperoxovanadate which was unaffected by addition of catalase or ethanol. The results showed that secondary oxygen-exchange reactions occur which depend on and utilize the intermediates in the primary reaction during diperoxovanadate-dependent oxidation of vanadyl sulfate.

A new water soluble cationic imidazopyridine species, viz. (1E)-1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)-3-(3(pyridin-2-yl) imidazo1,5-a]pyridin-2(3H)-yl)propan-2-ol (1), as a metal chelator is prepared as its PF6 salt and characterized. Compound 1 shows fluorescence at 438 nm on excitation at 342 nm in Tris-HCl buffer giving a fluorescence quantum yield (phi) of 0.105 and a life-time of 5.4 ns. Compound 1, as an avid DNA minor groove binder, shows pUC19 DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming singlet oxygen species in a type-II pathway. The photonuclease potential of 1 gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+, Cu2+ or Zn2+. Compound 1 itself displays anticancer activity in HeLa, HepG2 and Jurkat cells with an enhancement on addition of the metal ions. Photodynamic effect of 1 at 365 nm also gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+. Fluorescence-based cell cycle analysis shows a significant dead cell population in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle suggesting apoptosis via ROS generation. A significant change in the nuclear morphology is observed from Hoechst 33258 and an acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual nuclear staining suggesting apoptosis in cells when treated with 1 alone or in the presence of the metal ions. Apoptosis is found to be caspase-dependent. Fluorescence imaging to monitor the distribution of 1 in cells shows that 1 in the presence of metal ions accumulates predominantly in the cytoplasm. Enhanced uptake of 1 into the cells within 12 h is observed in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+.

Fine particle strontium substituted lanthanum ferrites La1-xSrxFeO3, where x = 0.0-1.0, have been synthesized by the solution combustion method using corresponding metal nitrates, oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) or tetra formal tris azine (TFTA). Formation of La1-xSrxFeO3 was confirmed by the XRD and the fine particle nature of the ferrites investigated using SEM, particle size analysis and BET surface area measurements. La1-xSrxFeO3 (up to x = 0-0.4) exhibited low resistivity near the Neel temperatures. La1-xSrxFeO3 with x greater than or equal to 0.8 when used as bifunctional electrodes, showed oxygen evolution and reduction activity comparable with the orthoferrites prepared by the conventional solid state method. Synthesis, crystal structures, linear and nonlinear optical properties of tris D-pi-A cryptand derivatives with C-3 symmetry are reported. Three fold symmetry inherent in the cryptand molecules has been utilized for designing these molecules. Molecular nonlinearities have been measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments. Among the compounds studied, L-1 adopts non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. Compounds L-1, L-2, L-3 and L-4 show a measurable SHG powder signal. These molecules are more isotropic and have significantly higher melting points than the classical p-nitroaniline based dipolar NLO compounds, making them useful for further device applications. Besides, different acceptor groups can be attached to the cryptand molecules to modulate their NLO properties.

Deposition of Al2O3 coatings by CVD is of importance because they are often used as abrading material in cemented carbide cutting tools. The conventionally used CVD process for Al2O3 involves the corrosive reactant AlCl3. In this paper, we report on the thermal characterisation of the metalorganic precursors namely aluminium tristetramethyl-heptanedionate [Al(thd)(3)] and aluminium tris-acetylacetonate [Al(acac)(3)] and their application to the CVD of Al2O3 films. Crystalline Al2O3 films were deposited by MOCVD at low temperatures by the pyrolysis of Al(thd)(3) and Al(acac)(3). The films were deposited on a TiN-coated tungsten carbide (TiN/WC) and Si(100) substrates in the temperature range 500-1100degreesC. The as-deposited films were characterised by x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy. The observed crystallinity of films grown at low temperatures, their microstructure, and composition may be interpreted in terms of a growth process that involves the melting of the metalorganic precursor on the hot growth surface.

Low-pressure MOCVD, with tris(2,4 pentanedionato)aluminum(III) as the precursor, was used in the present investigation to coat alumina on to cemented carbide cutting tools. To evaluate the MOCVD process, the efficiency in cutting operations of MOCVD-coated tools was compared with that of tools coated using the industry-standard CVD process.Three multilayer cemented carbide cutting tool inserts, viz., TiN/TiC/WC, CVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, and MOCVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, were compared in the dry turning of mild steel. Turning tests were conducted for cutting speeds ranging from 14 to 47 m/min, for a depth of cut from 0.25 to 1 mm, at the constant feed rate of 0.2 mm/min. The axial, tangential, and radial forces were measured using a lathe tool dynamometer for different cutting parameters, and the machined work pieces were tested for surface roughness. The results indicate that, in most of the cases examined, the MOCVD-coated inserts produced a smoother surface finish, while requiring lower cutting forces, indicating that MOCVD produces the best-performing insert, followed by the CVD-coated one. The superior performance of MOCVD-alumina is attributed to the co-deposition of carbon with the oxide, due to the very nature of the precursor used, leading to enhanced mechanical properties for cutting applications in harsh environment.

The complexes display a copper(II)-based d-d band near 600 nm and a Fc-centered band at similar to 450 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA. They are synthetic chemical nucleases in the presence of thiol or H(2)O(2), forming hydroxyl radicals. The photoactive complexes are cleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light, forming hydroxyl radicals. Complexes 2-6 show photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells, giving IC(50) values of 4.7, 10.2, 1.3, 4.8, and 4.3 mu M, respectively, in visible light with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. The complexes also show photocytotoxicity in MCF-7 cancer cells. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed with acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining with complex 4 in visible light. The complexes induce caspase-independent apoptosis in the HeLa cells.

The present article demonstrates how the stiffness, hardness as well as the cellular response of bioinert high-density polyethylene (HDPE) can be significantly improved with combined addition of both bioinert and bioactive ceramic fillers. For this purpose, different amounts of hydroxyapatite and alumina, limited to a total of 40 wt %, have been incorporated in HDPE matrix. An important step in composite fabrication was to select appropriate solvent and optimal addition of coupling agent (CA). In case of chemically coupled composites, 2% Titanium IV, 2-propanolato, tris iso-octadecanoato-O was used as a CA. All the hybrid composites, except monolithic HDPE, were fabricated under optimized compression molding condition (140 degrees C, 0.75 h, 10 MPa pressure). The compression molded composites were characterized, using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Importantly, in vitro cell culture and cell viability study (MTT) using L929 fibroblast and SaOS2 osteoblast-like cells confirmed good cytocompatibility properties of the developed hybrid composites. Complexes Cu(Ph-met)(B)](NO3) of the reduced Schiff base from benzaldehyde and L-methionine (Ph-metH) and B (phen in 5, dppz in 6) were prepared and used as control species. Complexes 1 and 5 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 as a discrete monomer has a CuN3OS core with the thiomethyl group as the axial ligand. Complex 5 has a polymeric structure with a CuN3O2 core in the solid state. Complexes 5 and 6 are formulated as Cu(Ph-met)(B)(H2O)] (NO3) in an aqueous phase based on the mass spectral data. Complexes 1-4 showed the Cu(II)-Cu(I) and Fc(+)-Fc redox couples at similar to 0.0 and similar to 0.5 V vs SCE, respectively, in DMF-0.1 M (Bu4N)-N-n](ClO4). A Cu(II)-based weak d-d band near 600 nm and a relatively strong ferrocenyl band at similar to 450 nm were observed in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer (1:4 v/v). The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA, exhibit moderate chemical nuclease activity forming (OH)-O-center dot radical species, and are efficient photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light of 454, 568, and 647 rim, forming (OH)-O-center dot radical as the reactive oxygen species. They are cytotoxic in HeLa (human cervical cancer) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells, showing an enhancement of cytotoxicity upon visible light irradiation. Significant change in the nuclear morphology of the HeLa cells was observed with 3 in visible light compared to the nonirradiated sample. Confocal imaging using 4 showed its nuclear localization within the HeLa cells.

Two new hydroxynaphthyl-hydrazone based fluorogenic chemosensors R-1 and R-2 have been synthesized by Schiff base condensation of Tris(4-formylphenyl)amine with 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-hydrazide and 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carbohydrazone, respectively. They are examined as highly selective and sensitive receptors for Cu2+ ions in aqueous medium. Electronic absorption as well as fluorescence titration studies of receptors R-1 and R-2 with different metal cations in H2O/CH3CN medium showed highly selective and very rapid (< 2 min) binding affinity towards Cu2+ ions even in the presence of other commonly coexisting metal ions such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+. Quantification of the fluorescence titration analysis indicated that these newly synthesized receptors (R-1 and R-2) can indicate the presence of Cu2+ ions even at very low concentrations of 598 and 676 ppt, respectively. In addition, the propensity of these receptors as bio-imaging fluorescent probes to detect Cu2+ ions in human cervical HeLa cancer cell lines and their cytotoxicity against HeLa cells have been investigated.

An organometallic building block 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)I(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (1) incorporating Pt-ethynyl functionality has been synthesized and characterized. 2 + 3] self-assembly of its nitrate analogue 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(ONO2)(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (2) with ``clip'' type bidentate donors (L-1-L-3) separately afforded three trigonal prismatic architectures (3a-3c), respectively. All these prisms were characterized and their shapes/sizes are predicted through geometry optimization employing molecular mechanics universal force field (MMUFF) simulation. The extended p-conjugation including the presence of Pt-ethynyl functionality makes them electron rich as well as luminescent in nature. Macrocycles 3b and 3c exhibit fluorescence quenching in solution upon addition of picric acid PA], which is a common constituent of many explosives. Interestingly, the non-responsive nature of fluorescent intensity towards other electron-deficient nitro-aromatic explosives (NAEs) makes them promising selective sensors for PA with a detection limit predicted to be ppb level. Furthermore, solid-state quenching of fluorescent intensity of the thin film of 3b upon exposure to saturated vapor of picric acid has drawn special attention for infield applications.

Similarly, the reaction of Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)2](OTf)(2) 1a](OTf)(2) with a triazine-based tritopic ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazole-1-yl) triazine (L3) in 3: 2 M ratio afforded an unexpected tetranuclear macrocycle 8](OTf)(4) instead of an expected trigonal prismatic cage 8a](OTf)(6). All the self-assembled macrocycles 2-8](OTf)(4) were isolated in moderate to high yields and were fully characterized by multinuclear H-1, F-19] NMR, IR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In addition, X-ray diffraction study on the single crystals of 3](OTf)(4) and 8](OTf)(4) also indicated the formation 2 + 2] self-assembled macrocycles. Despite the possibility of formation of different conformational isomeric macrocycles (syn-and anti) and polymeric product due to free rotation of ligand sites of imidazole linkers, the selective formation of single conformational isomer (anti) as the only product is quite interesting. Furthermore, the photo-and electrochemical properties of these assemblies have been studied using UV/Vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry analysis. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Iodination of tris(trimethylsilyl)methanethiol (trisylthiol, TsiSH) in tetrahydrofuran provides the new thermally stable alkanesulfenyl iodide iodo(trisyl)sulfane, TsiSI] as a violet solid. Iodo(trisyl)sulfane exhibits iodine-iodine contacts between pairs of TsiSI molecules in the solid state. Properties of TsiSI were studied by vibrational spectroscopy and with the help of density functional calculations. TsiSI reacts in the presence of triethylamine with the antithyroid drugs 6-n-propyl- and 6-methylthiouracil (PTU, MTU) and with N-methylmethimazole (MMI) to form unsymmetric disulfides that were investigated by means of X-ray crystallography. In the solid state, the PTU and MTU derivatives exist as hydrogen-bonded centrosymmetric dimers, whereas the MMI-derived disulfide is an unsymmetric monomer.
