In this paper, we present a new multiscale method which is capable of coupling atomistic and continuum domains for high frequency wave propagation analysis. The problem of non-physical wave reflection, which occurs due to the change in system description across the interface between two scales, can be satisfactorily overcome by the proposed method. We propose an efficient spectral domain decomposition of the total fine scale displacement along with a potent macroscale equation in the Laplace domain to eliminate the spurious interfacial reflection. We use Laplace transform based spectral finite element method to model the macroscale, which provides the optimum approximations for required dynamic responses of the outer atoms of the simulated microscale region very accurately. This new method shows excellent agreement between the proposed multiscale model and the full molecular dynamics (MD) results. Numerical experiments of wave propagation in a 1D harmonic lattice, a 1D lattice with Lennard-Jones potential, a 2D square Bravais lattice, and a 2D triangular lattice with microcrack demonstrate the accuracy and the robustness of the method. In addition, under certain conditions, this method can simulate complex dynamics of crystalline solids involving different spatial and/or temporal scales with sufficient accuracy and efficiency. The nature of the signal due to light beam induced current (LBIC) at the remote contacts is verified as a lateral photovoltage for non-uniformly illuminated planar p-n junction devices; simulation and experimental results are presented. The limitations imposed by the ohmic contacts are successfully overcome by the introduction of capacitively coupled remote contacts, which yield similar results without any significant loss in the estimated material and device parameters. It is observed that the LBIC measurements introduce artefacts such as shift in peak position with increasing laser power. Simulation of LBIC signal as a function of characteristic length L-c of photo-generated carriers and for different beam diameters has resulted in the observed peak shifts, thus attributed to the finite size of the beam. Further, the idea of capacitively coupled contacts has been extended to contactless measurements using pressure contacts with an oxidized aluminium electrodes. This technique avoids the contagious sample processing steps, which may introduce unintentional defects and contaminants into the material and devices under observation. Thus, we present here, the remote contact LBIC as a practically non-destructive tool in the evaluation of device parameters and welcome its use during fabrication steps. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
On Precoding for Constant K-User MIMO Gaussian Interference Channel With Finite Constellation Inputs
Resumo:
This paper considers linear precoding for the constant channel-coefficient K-user MIMO Gaussian interference channel (MIMO GIC) where each transmitter-i (Tx-i) requires the sending of d(i) independent complex symbols per channel use that take values from fixed finite constellations with uniform distribution to receiver-i (Rx-i) for i = 1, 2, ..., K. We define the maximum rate achieved by Tx-i using any linear precoder as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity when the interference channel coefficients are zero to be the constellation constrained saturation capacity (CCSC) for Tx-i. We derive a high-SNR approximation for the rate achieved by Tx-i when interference is treated as noise and this rate is given by the mutual information between Tx-i and Rx-i, denoted as I(X) under bar (i); (Y) under bar (i)]. A set of necessary and sufficient conditions on the precoders under which I(X) under bar (i); (Y) under bar (i)] tends to CCSC for Tx-i is derived. Interestingly, the precoders designed for interference alignment (IA) satisfy these necessary and sufficient conditions. Furthermore, we propose gradient-ascentbased algorithms to optimize the sum rate achieved by precoding with finite constellation inputs and treating interference as noise. A simulation study using the proposed algorithms for a three-user MIMO GIC with two antennas at each node with d(i) = 1 for all i and with BPSK and QPSK inputs shows more than 0.1-b/s/Hz gain in the ergodic sum rate over that yielded by precoders obtained from some known IA algorithms at moderate SNRs.

A new C-0 composite plate finite element based on Reddy's third order theory is used for large deformation dynamic analysis of delaminated composite plates. The inter-laminar contact is modeled with an augmented Lagrangian approach. Numerical results show that the widely used ``unconditionally stable'' beta-Newmark method presents instability problems in the transient simulation of delaminated composite plate structures with large deformation. To overcome this instability issue, an energy and momentum conserving composite implicit time integration scheme presented by Bathe and Baig is used. It is found that a proper selection of the penalty parameter is very crucial in the contact simulation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The work presented in this paper involves the stochastic finite element analysis of composite-epoxy adhesive lap joints using Monte Carlo simulation. A set of composite adhesive lap joints were prepared and loaded till failure to obtain their strength. The peel and shear strain in the bond line region at different levels of load were obtained using digital image correlation (DIC). The corresponding stresses were computed assuming a plane strain condition. The finite element model was verified by comparing the numerical and experimental stresses. The stresses exhibited a similar behavior and a good correlation was obtained. Further, the finite element model was used to perform the stochastic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation. The parameters influencing stress distribution were provided as a random input variable and the resulting probabilistic variation of maximum peel and shear stresses were studied. It was found that the adhesive modulus and bond line thickness had significant influence on the maximum stress variation. While the adherend thickness had a major influence, the effect of variation in longitudinal and shear modulus on the stresses was found to be little. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The paper presents a simulation study of loose cylindrically shaped particles packed within a copper plate and aluminum fins. The model presented solves coupled heat and mass transfer equations using the finite volume method based on ANSY S FLUENT medium. Three different arrangements of cylindrical particles are considered. The model is validated with experimental data. It is found that the arrangements which represented monolayer configurations are only marginally better in heat transfer and uptake efficiency than the tri-layer configuration in the presence of fins. However, there is an appreciable difference in the uptake curve between monoand tri-layer configurations in the absence of fins. Finally, it is found that the fin pitch also plays an important role in determining the time constant for the adsorber design.

In conventional Raman spectroscopic measurements of liquids or surfaces the preferred geometry for detection of the Raman signal is the backscattering (or reflection) mode. For non-transparent layered materials, sub-surface Raman signals have been retrieved using spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), usually with light collection in the same plane as the point of excitation. However, as a result of multiple scattering in a turbid medium, Raman photons will be emitted in all directions. In this study, Monte Carlo simulations for a three-dimensional layered sample with finite geometry have been performed to confirm the detectability of Raman signals at all angles and at all sides of the object. We considered a non-transparent cuboid container (high density polyethylene) with explosive material (ammonium nitrate) inside. The simulation results were validated with experimental Raman intensities. Monte Carlo simulation results reveal that the ratio of sub-surface to surface signals improves at geometries other than backscattering. In addition, we demonstrate through simulations the effects of the absorption and scattering coefficients of the layers, and that of the diameter of the excitation beam. The advantage of collecting light from all possible 4 angles, over other collection modes, is that this technique is not geometry specific and molecular identification of layers underneath non-transparent surfaces can be obtained with minimal interference from the surface layer. To what extent all sides of the object will contribute to the total signal will depend on the absorption and scattering coefficients and the physical dimensions. This paper presents a lower bound limit analysis approach for solving an axisymmetric stability problem by using the Drucker-Prager (D-P) yield cone in conjunction with finite elements and nonlinear optimization. In principal stress space, the tip of the yield cone has been smoothened by applying the hyperbolic approximation. The nonlinear optimization has been performed by employing an interior point method based on the logarithmic barrier function. A new proposal has also been given to simulate the D-P yield cone with the Mohr-Coulomb hexagonal yield pyramid. For the sake of illustration, bearing capacity factors N-c, N-q and N-gamma have been computed, as a function of phi, both for smooth and rough circular foundations. The results obtained from the analysis compare quite well with the solutions reported from literature.
