Low-spin (LS) to intermediate-spin (IS) state transitions in crystals of LnCoO3 (Ln=La, Pr and Nd) have been investigated by variable temperature infrared spectroscopy. The spectra reveal the occurrence of the transition around 120, 220 and 275 K, respectively, in LaCoO3,PrCoO3 and NdCoO3, at which temperatures the intensities of the stretching and the bending modes associated with the LS state decrease, accompanied by an increase in the intensities of the bands due to IS state. The characteristic frequencies of both the spin states decrease with increase in temperature, showing anomalies around the transition.

We report a novel phase behavior in aqueous solutions of simple organic solutes near their liquid/liquid critical points, where a solid-like third phase appears at the liquid/liquid interface. The phenomenon has been found in three different laboratories. It appears in many aqueous systems of organic solutes and becomes enhanced upon the addition of salt to these solutions.

The gamma-phase poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films are usually prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, regardless of preparation temperature. Here we report the crystallization of both alpha and gamma-phase PVDF films by varying preparation temperature using DMSO solvent. The gamma-phase PVDF films were annealed at 70, 90, 110, 130 and 160 degrees C for five hours. The changes in the phase contents in the PVDF at different annealing conditions have been described. When thin films were annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, maximum percentage of beta-phase appears in PVDF thin films. The gamma-phase PVDF films completely converted to alpha-phase when they were annealed at 160 degrees C for 5 h. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman studies, it is confirmed that the PVDF thin films, cast from solution and annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, have maximum percentage of beta-phase. The beta-phase PVDF shows a remnant polarization of 4.9 mu C/cm(2) at 1400 kV/cm at 1 Hz.

The critical behaviour has been investigated in single crystalline Nd0.6Pb0.4MnO3 near the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) by static magnetic measurements. The values of TC and the critical exponents β, γ and δ are estimated by analysing the data in the critical region. The exponent values are very close to those expected for 3D Heisenberg ferromagnets with short-range interactions. Specific heat measurements show a broad cusp at TC (i.e., exponent α<0) being consistent with Heisenberg-like behaviour.

We report high pressure Raman studies on single crystals of metallic LaB6 upto a pressure of 16.$ GPa. Raman spectra shows three lines at 680 cm(-1) (T-2g), 1120 cm(-1) (E-g) and 1258 cm(-1) (A(1g)), associated with the internal modes of B-6 molecule. The T-2g mode shows an asymmetric Fano line shape, arising from the interference between the phonon line and the electronic continuum. The line is fitted with I(omega) = I-0(q + epsilon(2))/(I + epsilon(2)) where epsilon = (omega - omega(0))/Gamma, omega(0) is the phonon frequency renormalised due to electron-phonon self energy corrections, Tis the width parameter proportional to the square of the matrix element of the electron-phonon interaction potential. The parameter a signifies the strength of interference. Most interestingly our pressure data for the T-2g mode shows a significant change in the slope of the mode frequency with pressure d omega(0)/dP and Gamma at 9.5 GPa. This clearly indicates that LaB6 undergoes a subtle phase transition at 9.5 GPa within the metallic phase.

Our in situ x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements of Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore show that it undergoes a reversible structural phase transition from cubic pyrochlore to a monoclinic phase at similar to 28.6 GPa. Analysis of the x-ray data shows the transition to be thermodynamically first order and the high pressure phase to be substitutionally disordered. These experimental results are supported by our first principles calculations. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3681300]

Freestanding crystalline PbZrO3 nanoparticles with an average size of 15 nm were synthesized by the modified sot gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Dielectric studies indicated that the paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition in the PbZrO3 nanoparticles was observed around at 205 degrees C which was at 233 degrees C for PbZrO3 bulk material. A single leaky ferroelectric loop was observed instead of an antiferroelectric double hysteresis loop which may be because of the defects such as grain boundaries and the pores in the sample because the sample was not sintered at higher temperatures to retain the nanoscale dimension of the PbZrO3 particles.

Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulation, we have studied the effect of size and temperature on the strain induced phase transition of wurtzite CdSe nanowires. The wurtzite structure transforms into a five-fold coordinated structure under uniaxial strain along the c axis. Our results show that lower temperature and smaller size of the nanowires stabilize the five-fold coordinated phase which is not a stable structure in bulk CdSe. High reversibility of this transformation with a very small heat loss will make these nanowires suitable for building efficient nanodevices. A systematic x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study of the giant tetragonality multiferroic (1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 have revealed that the compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundary present two different structural phase transition scenarios on cooling from the cubic phase: (i) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) -> tetragonal (T-1) and (ii) cubic -> tetragonal (T-2) + tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c) -> tetragonal (T-1) + rhombohedral (R3c). The comparatively larger tetragonality (c/a - 1) of the T-1 phase as compared to the coexisting isostructural T-2 phase is shown to be a result of significantly greater degree of overlap of the Pb/Bi-6s and Ti/Fe-3d with the O-2p orbitals as compared to that in the T-2 phase. The formation/suppression of the minor metastable rhombohedral phase seems to be governed by subtle play of local kinetic factors. In the scenario when the minor rhombohedral (R) phase is formed along with the tetragonal phases it is able to accommodate the large transformation stress in the system due to formation of the tetragonal phases, and prevent the solid from disintegration into powder after sintering. When the metastable rhombohedral phase is not formed, the large transformation strain ruptures the grain boundaries leading to fragmentation of the dense solid to powder. We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe2As2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature T-SDW similar to 165K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T-SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like temperature dependent charge gap with its zero-temperature value of similar to(1.6 perpendicular to 0.2)k(B)T(SDW), whereas, much above T-SDW, an electron-phonon coupling constant of similar to 0.13 has been estimated from the linear temperature-dependence of the QP relaxation time. The long-wavelength coherent acoustic phonons with typical time-period of similar to 100 ps have been analyzed in the light of propagating strain pulse model providing important results for the optical constants, sounds velocity and the elastic modulus of the crystal in the whole temperature range of 3 to 300 K.

In this paper, we consider the setting of the pattern maximum likelihood (PML) problem studied by Orlitsky et al. We present a well-motivated heuristic algorithm for deciding the question of when the PML distribution of a given pattern is uniform. The algorithm is based on the concept of a ``uniform threshold''. This is a threshold at which the uniform distribution exhibits an interesting phase transition in the PML problem, going from being a local maximum to being a local minimum.

We present direct experimental signatures of a nonequilibrium phase transition associated with the yield point of a prototypical soft solid-a binary colloidal glass. By simultaneously quantifying single-particle dynamics and bulk mechanical response, we identified the threshold for the onset of irreversibility with the yield strain. We extracted the relaxation time from the transient behavior of the loss modulus and found that it diverges in the vicinity of the yield strain. This critical slowing down is accompanied by a growing correlation length associated with the size of regions of high Debye-Waller factor, which are precursors to yield events in glasses. Our results affirm that the paradigm of nonequilibrium critical phenomena is instrumental in achieving a holistic understanding of yielding in soft solids.

Nanocrystalline titania are a robust candidate for various functional applications owing to its non-toxicity, cheap availability, ease of preparation and exceptional photochemical as well as thermal stability. The uniqueness in each lattice structure of titania leads to multifaceted physico-chemical and opto-electronic properties, which yield different functionalities and thus influence their performances in various green energy applications. The high temperature treatment for crystallizing titania triggers inevitable particle growth and the destruction of delicate nanostructural features. Thus, the preparation of crystalline titania with tunable phase/particle size/morphology at low to moderate temperatures using a solution-based approach has paved the way for further exciting areas of research. In this focused review, titania synthesis from hydrothermal/solvothermal method, conventional sol-gel method and sol-gel-assisted method via ultrasonication, photoillumination and ILs, thermolysis and microemulsion routes are discussed. These wet chemical methods have broader visibility, since multiple reaction parameters, such as precursor chemistry, surfactants, chelating agents, solvents, mineralizer, pH of the solution, aging time, reaction temperature/time, inorganic electrolytes, can be easily manipulated to tune the final physical structure. This review sheds light on the stabilization/phase transformation pathways of titania polymorphs like anatase, rutile, brookite and TiO2(B) under a variety of reaction conditions. The driving force for crystallization arising from complex species in solution coupled with pH of the solution and ion species facilitating the orientation of octahedral resulting in a crystalline phase are reviewed in detail. In addition to titanium halide/alkoxide, the nucleation of titania from other precursors like peroxo and layered titanates are also discussed. The nonaqueous route and ball milling-induced titania transformation is briefly outlined; moreover, the lacunae in understanding the concepts and future prospects in this exciting field are suggested.

Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we show a semimetal to semiconducting electronic phase transition for bulk TiS2 by applying uniform biaxial tensile strain. This electronic phase transition is triggered by charge transfer from Ti to S, which eventually reduces the overlap between Ti-(d) and S-(p) orbitals. The electronic transport calculations show a large anisotropy in electrical conductivity and thermopower, which is due to the difference in the effective masses along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. Strain-induced opening of band gap together with changes in dispersion of bands lead to threefold enhancement in thermopower for both p-and n-type TiS2. We further demonstrate that the uniform tensile strain, which enhances the thermoelectric performance, can be achieved by doping TiS2 with larger iso-electronic elements such as Zr or Hf at Ti sites.
