Clinical and mycological investigations were made on 225 cases of suspected dermatomycoses. Of these, 102 were microscopically positive. But only 63 were culturally positive, and these are analysed here with regard to clinical patterns and aetiological species, age, sex and occupational incidence and susceptibility to griseofulvin in vitro. As in most other parts of India, Trichophyton rubrum was the dominant species. A high proportion of Epidermophyton floccosum was an unusual feature seen. Of the clinical types, tinea cruris was the most common. The isolates were sensitive to griseofulvin at low concentrations of 1 to 5 μg per ml of agar medium, E. floccosum being the most sensitive.

The plasma is taken to be composed of singly ionized molecules, free electrons and neutral molecules, each of the component being described by the hydromagnetic equations, modified to take into account the displacement current, existence of free charge in the medium, and the modified current equation without involving the scalar conductivity. The basic equations are linearized and only small amplitude waves are considered. In the absence of any external magnetic field, the transverse and longitudinal modes of oscillation separate out. In the transverse part a coupled plasma oscillation occurs which could be propagated only above a certain critical frequency and in the longitudinal part one extraordinary mode of propagation occurs having a forbidden range of frequencies. When there is an external applied magnetic field, ordinary and extraordinary waves are propagated along the direction of the magnetic field, whereas only ordinary waves are propagated transverse to the magnetic field. The critical frequencies above which these waves are propagated are evaluated and, the possible explanation of this medium like behaviour could be the implicit assumption of conductivity being not a scalar.

Dipole moment measurements have been made in the case of a few aromatic hydrocarbon picrates, the values obtained being 2·18, 2·25, 2·97 (all in Debye units) for picrates of naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene respectively and the results discussed in terms of Mulliken's theory. Measurements have also been extended to include a few salt-like heterocyclic amine picrates.

Incremental semantic analysis in a programming environment based on Attribute Grammars is performed by an Incremental Attribute Evaluator (IAE). Current IAEs are either table-driven or make extensive use of graph structures to schedule reevaluation of attributes. A method of compiling an Ordered Attribute Grammar into mutually recursive procedures is proposed. These procedures form an optimal time Incremental Attribute Evaluator for the attribute grammar, which does not require any graphs or tables.

Electrochemical oxidation of borohydride is studied on nanosized rhodium, iridium, and bimetallic rhodium-iridium catalysts supported onto Vulcan XC72R carbon. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The studies reveal that a 20 wt % bimetallic Rh-Ir catalyst supported onto carbon (Rh-Ir/C) is quite effective for the oxidation of borohydride. Direct borohydride fuel cell with Rh-Ir/C as the anode catalyst and Pt/C as the cathode catalyst exhibits a peak power density of 270 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 290 mA/cm(2) as against 200 mW/cm(2) at 225 mA/cm(2) for Rh/C and 140 mW/cm(2) at 165 mA/cm(2) for Ir/C while operating at 80 degrees C. The synergistic catalytic activity for the bimetallic Rh-Ir nanoparticles toward borohydride oxidation is corroborated by density-functional theory calculations using electron-localization function. We study a model of fermions hopping on a chain with a weak incommensuration close to dimerization; both q, the deviation of the wave number from pi, and delta, the strength of the incommensuration, are assumed to be small. For free fermions, we show that there are an infinite number of energy bands which meet at zero energy as q approaches zero. The number of states lying inside the q = 0 gap remains nonzero as q/delta --> 0. Thus the limit q --> 0 differs from q = 0, as can be seen clearly in the low-temperature specific heat. For interacting fermions or the XXZ spin-(1/2) chain, we use bosonization to argue that similar results hold. Finally, our results can be applied to the Azbel-Hofstadter problem of particles hopping on a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of a magnetic field.

Experimental data on average velocity and turbulence intensity generated by pitched blade downflow turbines (PTD) were presented in Part I of this paper. Part II presents the results of the simulation of flow generated by PTD The standard κ-ε model along with the boundary conditions developed in the Part 1 have been employed to predict the flow generated by PTD in cylindrical baffled vessel. This part describes the new software FIAT (Flow In Agitated Tanks) for the prediction of three dimensional flow in stirred tanks. The basis of this software has been described adequately. The influence of grid size, impeller boundary conditions and values of model parameters on the predicted flow have been analysed. The model predictions successfully reproduce the three dimensionality and the other essential characteristics of the flow. The model can be used to improve the overall understanding about the relative distribution of turbulence by PTD in the agitated tank

An anomalous gauge theory can be reformulated in a gauge invariant way without any change in its physical content. This is demonstrated here for the exactly soluble chiral Schwinger model. Our gauge invariant version is very different from the Faddeev-Shatashvili proposal [L.D. Faddeev and S.L. Shatashvili, Theor. Math. Phys. 60 (1984) 206] and involves no additional gauge-group-valued fields. The status of the "gauge" A0=0 sometimes used in anomalous theories is also discussed and justified in our reformulation.

Oral administration of pulegone (400 mg/kg) to rats once daily for five days caused significant decreases in the levels of liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 and heme. Cytochrome b5 and NAD(P)H-cytochrome c-reductase activities were not affected. Massive hepatotoxicy accompanied by an increase in serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and a decrease in glucose-6-phosphatase were observed upon treatment with pulegone. A significant decrease in aminopyrine N-demethylase was also noticed after pulegone administration. Menthone or carvone (600 mg/kg), compounds related to pulegone, when administered orally did not cause any decrease in cytochrome P-450 levels. The hepatotoxic effects of pulegone were both dose and time dependent. Pretreatment of rats with phenobarbital (PB) or diethylmaleate (DEM) potentiated the hepatotoxicity caused by pulegone, whereas, pretreatment with 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) or piperonyl butoxide protected from it. It appears that a PB induced cytochrome P-450 catalysed reactive metabolite(s) may be responsible for the hepatotoxicity caused by pulegone.

The combustion technique produces ionically dispersed Ag on a nano-crystalline CeO2 surface. The catalysts thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Catalytic properties towards NO reduction, CO and hydrocarbon oxidation have been investigated using the temperature programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. These results are compared with alpha-Al2O3 supported finely divided Ag metal particles synthesized by the same method. Both oxidation and reduction reactions over Ag/CeO2 have been observed to occur at lower temperatures compared to Ag/Al2O3. The rate and turnover frequency of the NO+CO reaction over 1% Ag/CeO2 are 56.3 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) and 0.97 s(-1) at 225 degrees C respectively. Activation energy (E-a) values are 71 and 67 kJ mol(-1) for CO+O-2 and NO+CO reactions, respectively, over 1% Ag/CeO2 catalyst.
