In the titled tricyclic orthocarbonate derivative, the three endocyclic C-O bonds are longer than the exo-cyclic C-O bond (similar to 4.40 angstrom vs. similar to 1.37 angstrom). This indicates an anomeric-type interaction between the two electron lone pairs on the exocyclic oxygen atom and the antibonding orbitals of the two antiperiplanar endocyclic C-O bonds. The remaining endocyclic C-O bond - marginally shorter than the other two apparently adds to this effect. Intriguingly, the antibonding orbital of the exocyclic C-O bond extends into the interior of the adamantyl cage, and is stereoelectronically prevented from overlapping with any of the six adjacent lone pairs. The results also seem to indicate a preference for interaction between a single donor oxygen atom and multiple acceptor antibonding orbitals rather than vice versa. The results add insightfully to the substantial body of evidence favouring the antiperiplanar lone pair hypothesis (ALPH). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structural effects of a representative ``disallowed'' conformation of Aib on the 3(10)-helical fold of an octapeptidomimetic are explored. The 1D (H-1, C-13) & 2D NMR, FT-IR and CD data reveal that the octapeptide 1, adopts a 3(10)- helical conformation in solution, as it does in its crystal structure. The C-terminal methyl carboxylate (CO2Me) of 1 was modified into an 1,3-oxazine (Oxa) functional group in the peptidomimetic 2. This modification results in the stabilization of the backbone of the C-terminal Aib (Aib(star)-Oxa) of 2, in a conformation (phi, psi = 180, 0) that is natively disallowed to Aib. Consequent to the presence of this natively disallowed conformation, the 3(10)- helical fold is not disrupted in the body of the peptidomimetic 2. But the structural distortions that do occur in 2 are primarily in residues in the immediate vicinity of the natively disallowed conformation, rather than in the whole peptide body. Non-native electronic effects resulting from modifications in backbone functional groups can be at the origin of stabilizing residues in natively disallowed conformations. Direct measurement of three-dimensional (3-D) forces between an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe and the sample benefits diverse applications of AFM, including force spectroscopy, nanometrology, and manipulation. This paper presents the design and evaluation of a measurement system, wherein the deflection of the AFM probe is obtained at two points to enable direct measurement of all the three components of 3-D tip-sample forces in real time. The optimal locations for measurement of deflection on the probe are derived for a conventional AFM probe. Further, a new optimal geometry is proposed for the probe that enables measurement of 3-D forces with identical sensitivity and nearly identical resolution along all three axes. Subsequently, the designed measurement system and the optimized AFM probe are both fabricated and evaluated. The evaluation demonstrates accurate measurement of tip-sample forces with minimal cross-sensitivities. Finally, the real-time measurement system is employed as part of a feedback control system to regulate the normal component of the interaction force, and to perform force-controlled scribing of a groove on the surface of polymethyl methacrylate.

We demonstrate a non-contact technique to apply calibrated and localized forces in the micro-Newton to milli-Newton range using an air microjet. An electromagnetically actuated diaphragm controlled by a signal generator is used to generate the air microjet. With a nozzle diameter of 150 mu m, the microjet diameter was maintained to a maximum of 1 mm at a distance of 5 mm from the nozzle. The force generated by the microjet was measured using a commercial force sensor to determine the velocity profile of the jet. Axial flow velocities of up to 25 m s(-1) were obtained at distances as long as 6 mm. The microjet exerted a force up to 1 mu N on a poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS) micropillar (50 mu m in diameter, 157 mu m in height) and 415 mu N on a PDMS membrane (3 mm in diameter, 28 mu m thick). We also demonstrate that from a distance of 6 mm our microjet can exert a peak pressure of 187 Pa with a total force of about 84 mu N on a flat surface with 8 V operating voltage. Out of the cleanroom fabrication and robust design make this system cost effective and durable.

Atomic force Microscopy (AFM) has become a versatile tool in biology due to its advantage of high-resolution imaging of biological samples close to their native condition. Apart from imaging, AFM can also measure the local mechanical properties of the surfaces. In this study, we explore the possibility of using AFM to quantify the rough eye phenotype of Drosophila melanogaster through mechanical properties. We have measured adhesion force, stiffness and elastic modulus of the corneal lens using AFM. Various parameters affecting these measurements like cantilever stiffness and tip geometry are systematically studied and the measurement procedures are standardized. Results show that the mean adhesion force of the ommatidial surface varies from 36 nN to 16 nN based on the location. The mean stiffness is 483 +/- 5 N/m, and the elastic modulus is 3.4 +/- 0.05 GPa (95% confidence level) at the center of ommatidia. These properties are found to be different in corneal lens of eye expressing human mutant tau gene (mutant). The adhesion force, stiffness and elastic modulus are decreased in the mutant. We conclude that the measurement of surface and mechanical properties of D. melanogaster using AFM can be used for quantitative evaluation of `rough eye' surface. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of In2O3 octahedrons is carried out successfully by heating Indium metal pieces in air ambient. The sample is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The as-prepared In2O3 octahedrons are highly crystalline and exhibit body centered cubic structure. Room temperature and temperature (293-453K) dependence photoluminescence reveals a deep levelbroad emission of yellowish-orange spectra centered around 605 nm. The emission is due to the presence of defect levels in the band gap of materials.
