Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON), the widely used solid electrolyte for thin film microbatteries, is not compatible with the ambient humid temperatures. The reasons for reduction in ionic conductivity of LiPON thin films from 2.8 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) to 9.9 x 10(-10) Scm(-1) when exposed to air are analyzed with the aid of AC impedance measurements, SEM, XPS and stylus profilometry. Initially, particulate-free film surfaces obtained soon after rf sputter deposition in N-2 ambient conditions becomes covered with microstructures, forming pores in the film when exposed to air. LiPON films are deposited on Ti coated silicon in addition to bare silicon, ruling out the possibility of stress-related rupturing from the LiPON/Si interface. The reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and increased presence of lithium, oxygen and carbon over the film surface lowers the ionic conductivity of LiPON films when exposed to air. The development of microstructure in 316L stainless steel during industrial hot forming operations including press forging (strain rate of 0 . 15 s(-1)), rolling/extrusion (strain rate of 2-8 . 8 s(-1)), and hammer forging (strain rate of 100 s(-1)) at different temperatures in the range 600-1200 degrees C was studied with a view to validating the predictions of the processing map. The results showed that good col relation existed between the regimes indicated in the map and the product microstructures. The 316L stainless steel exhibited unstable flow in the form of flow localisation when hammer forged at temperatures above 900 degrees C, rolled below 1000 degrees C, or press forged below 900 degrees C. All these conditions must therefore be avoided in mechanical processing of the material. Conversely, in order to obtain defect free microstructures, ideally the material should be rolled at temperatures above 1100 degrees C, press forged at temperatures above 1000 degrees C, or hammer forged in the temperature range 600-900 degrees C. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor with very poor patient median survival. To identify a microRNA (miRNA) expression signature that can predict GBM patient survival, we analyzed the miRNA expression data of GBM patients (n = 222) derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset. We divided the patients randomly into training and testing sets with equal number in each group. We identified 10 significant miRNAs using Cox regression analysis on the training set and formulated a risk score based on the expression signature of these miRNAs that segregated the patients into high and low risk groups with significantly different survival times (hazard ratio HR] = 2.4; 95% CI = 1.4-3.8; p < 0.0001). Of these 10 miRNAs, 7 were found to be risky miRNAs and 3 were found to be protective. This signature was independently validated in the testing set (HR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.1-2.8; p = 0.002). GBM patients with high risk scores had overall poor survival compared to the patients with low risk scores. Overall survival among the entire patient set was 35.0% at 2 years, 21.5% at 3 years, 18.5% at 4 years and 11.8% at 5 years in the low risk group, versus 11.0%, 5.5%, 0.0 and 0.0% respectively in the high risk group (HR = 2.0; 95% CI = 1.4-2.8; p < 0.0001). Cox multivariate analysis with patient age as a covariate on the entire patient set identified risk score based on the 10 miRNA expression signature to be an independent predictor of patient survival (HR = 1.120; 95% CI = 1.04-1.20; p = 0.003). Thus we have identified a miRNA expression signature that can predict GBM patient survival. These findings may have implications in the understanding of gliomagenesis, development of targeted therapy and selection of high risk cancer patients for adjuvant therapy.

The decomposition of the beta phase in rapidly quenched Ti-2.8 at. pet Co, Ti-5.4 at. pet Ni, Ti-4.5 at. pet, and 5.5 at. pet Cu alloys has been investigated by electron microscopy. During rapid quenching, two competitive phase transformations, namely martensitic and eutectoid transformation, have occurred, and the region of eutectoid transformation is extended due to the high cooling rates involved. The beta phase decomposed into nonlamellar eutectoid product (bainite) having a globular morphology in Ti-2.8 pet Co and Ti-4.5 pet Cu (hypoeutectoid) alloys. In the near-eutectoid Ti-5.5 pet Cu alloy, the decomposition occurred by a lamellar (pearlite) type, whereas in Ti-5.4 pct Ni (hypereutectoid), both morphologies were observed. The interfaces between the proeutectoid alpha and the intermetallic compound in the nonlamellar type as well as between the proeutectoid alpha and the pearlite were often found to be partially coherent. These findings are in agreement with the Lee and Aaronson model proposed recently for the evolution of bainite and pearlite structures during the solid-state transformations of some titanium-eutectoid alloys. The evolution of the Ti2Cu phase during rapid quenching involved the formation of a metastable phase closely related to an ''omega-type'' phase before the equilibrium phase formed. Further, the lamellar intermetallic compound Ti2Cu was found to evolve by a sympathetic nucleation process. Evidence is established for the sympathetic nucleation of the proeutectoid alpha crystals formed during rapid quenching.

Callus induction and morphogenesis from different blackgram explants were tested on MS basal medium supplemented with B5 vitamins, IAA, NAA, IBA, KIN and BAP individually and in combinations. The explants were hypocotyl, epicotyl, axillary bud, cotyledonary node and immature leaf. The optimal levels of the frequency of callus induction was 22.8 mu M of IAA or 16.1 mu M NAA and in combination with 2.2 mu M of BAP. Among the seedling explants, hypocotyl was found to be more efficient in producing callus. Shoots mere induced from callus cultures of hypocotyls, epicotyls, axillary bud, cotyledonary node and immature leaf with varying frequencies in the medium containing KIN (2.3-9.3 mu M) or BAP (2.2-8.8 mu M) and in combination with IAA (2.8 mu M) or NAA (2.6 mu M). Multiple shoots were obtained using cotyledonary node segments. The regenerated shoots rooted best on MS basal medium containing 9.8 mu M IBA. Seventy three per cent of the shoots produced roots, and 80-85% of the plantlets survived under greenhouse condition.

In this paper, recent results on band A emission in chemical vapor-deposited diamond films have been analyzed within a vibronic model. The blue-band A (2.8 eV) spectra from undoped diamond films grown by two different techniques have been simulated using the same phonon density distribution g(Omega) and Huang-Rhys factor (S). The same g(Omega) at higher S gives a good fit with the green band A (2.32 eV) as well. This model provides a reasonable alternative approach to the long standing donor-acceptor pair recombination model.

We investigated the role of cAMP/cGMP, protein kinases and intracellular calcium ( [Ca2+](i)) in pentoxifylline-stimulated hamster sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction (AR) in vitro. Treatment with pentoxifylline [0.45 mM) initially increased sperm cAMP values 2.8-fold, compared with untreated controls (396 +/- 9.2 versus 141 +/- 6.0 fmoles/10(6) spermatozoa; mean +/- SEM, n = 6) after 15 min, although by 3 h, cAMP values were similar (503-531 fmoles/10(6) spermatozoal, cGMP values (similar to 27 fmoles/10(6) spermatozoa) were the same in treated and control spermatozoa. Both sperm capacitation and the AR, determined from the absence of an acrosomal cap, were stimulated by pentoxifylline; these were almost completely inhibited by a Cl-/HCO(3)(-)antiporter inhibitor (4,4-diisothiocyanato-stilbene-2,2 disulphonic acid; 1 mM) defined from the degree of sperm motility and by a protein kinase A inhibitor (H89; 10 mu M) A protein kinase G inhibitor (staurosporine, 1 nM) did not affect pentoxifylline-stimulated capacitation but inhibited the AR by 50%. A protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor (tyrphostin A-47, 0.1 mM) had no effect on either pentoxifylline-stimulated capacitation or AR, A phospholipase A(2) inhibitor (aristolochic acid, 0.4 mM) markedly inhibited the pentoxifylline-stimulated AR but not capacitation. When intracellular sperm calcium [Ca2+](i) was measured using fura-2-AM, there was an early rise 271 nM at 0.5 hi in pentoxifylline(-treated spermatozoa; this appeared to be due to intracellular mobilization rather than to uptake. In the absence of extracellular Ca2+, sperm motility was maintained in the presence of pentoxifylline, but capacitation did not occur; spermatozoa exhibited a low level of hyperactivated motility and had a poor rate of AR(20.5 +/- 2.3%). These results suggest that: (i) the pentoxifylline-stimulated early onset of sperm capacitation may be mediated by an early rise in cAMP and [Ca2+/-](i) and involves protein kinase A activity; and (ii) pentoxifylline-stimulated AR may require phospholipase A;A(2) and protein kinase C activity.

The enthalpy increments and the standard molar Gibbs energies of formation-of DyFeO3(s) and Dy3Fe5O12(s) have been measured using a Calvet micro-calorimeter and a solid oxide galvanic cell, respectively. A co-operative phase transition, related to anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transformation, is apparent. from the heat capacity data for DyFeO3 at similar to 648 K. A similar type of phase transition has been observed for Dy3Fe5O12 at similar to 560 K which is related to ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic transformation. Designing and optimizing high performance microprocessors is an increasingly difficult task due to the size and complexity of the processor design space, high cost of detailed simulation and several constraints that a processor design must satisfy. In this paper, we propose the use of empirical non-linear modeling techniques to assist processor architects in making design decisions and resolving complex trade-offs. We propose a procedure for building accurate non-linear models that consists of the following steps: (i) selection of a small set of representative design points spread across processor design space using latin hypercube sampling, (ii) obtaining performance measures at the selected design points using detailed simulation, (iii) building non-linear models for performance using the function approximation capabilities of radial basis function networks, and (iv) validating the models using an independently and randomly generated set of design points. We evaluate our model building procedure by constructing non-linear performance models for programs from the SPEC CPU2000 benchmark suite with a microarchitectural design space that consists of 9 key parameters. Our results show that the models, built using a relatively small number of simulations, achieve high prediction accuracy (only 2.8% error in CPI estimates on average) across a large processor design space. Our models can potentially replace detailed simulation for common tasks such as the analysis of key microarchitectural trends or searches for optimal processor design points.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by addition of Gallium (Ga) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79 at.%Si and Nb-20.2 at.%Si-2.7 at.%Ga were carried out. The microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mold. It is shown that addition of Ga suppresses Nb(3)Si phase and promotes beta-Nb(5)Si(3) phase. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloys. Compression test shows a strength of 2.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and plasticity of 4.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at.%Si alloy processed under identical conditions exhibit coarser length scale (300-400 nm) and brittle behavior. The fracture toughness of Ga containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 24.11 +/- 0.5 MPa root m representing a major improvement for bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The reaction of a tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (2-(3-dimethylaminopropylimino)-methyl]-phenol) with Ni(II) acetate or perchlorate salts in the presence of azide as coligand has led to two new Ni(II) complexes of formulas Ni3L2(OAc)(2)(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (1) and Ni2L2(mu(1,1)-N-3) (mu(1,3)-N-3)](n)(2). Single crystal X-ray structures show that complex 1 is a linear trinuclear Ni(II) compound containing a mu(2)-phenwddo, an end-on (EO) azido and a syn-syn acetato bridge between the terminal and the central Ni(II) ions. Complex 2 can be viewed as a one-dimensional (1D) chain in which the triply bridged (di-mu(2)-phenoxido and EO azido) dimeric Ni-2 units are linked to each other in a zigzag pattern by a single end-to-end (EE) azido bridge. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate the presence of moderate ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1 with J value of 16.51(6) cm(-1). The magnetic behavior of 2 can be fitted in an alternating ferro- and antiferromagnetic model J(FM) = +34.2(2.8) cm(-1) and J(AF) = -21.6(1.1) cm(-1)] corresponding to the triple bridged dinuclear core and EE azido bridge respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to corroborate the magnetic results of 1 and 2. The contributions of the different bridges toward magnetic interactions in both compounds have also been calculated.
