This case study has been carried out as a comparison between two different land-use strategies for climate change mitigation, with possible application within the Clean Development Mechanisms. The benefits of afforestation for carbon sequestration versus for bioenergy production are compared in the context of development planning to meet increasing domestic and agricultural demand for electricity in Hosahalli village, Karnataka, India. One option is to increase the local biomass based electricity generation, requiring an increased biomass plantation area. This option is compared with fossil based electricity generation where the area is instead used for producing wood for non-energy purposes while also sequestering carbon in the soil and standing biomass. The different options have been assessed using the PRO-COMAP model. The ranking of the different options varies depending on the system boundaries and time period. Results indicate that, in the short term (30 years) perspective, the mitigation potential of the long rotation plantation is largest, followed by the short rotation plantation delivering wood for energy. The bioenergy option is however preferred if a long-term view is taken. Short rotation forests delivering wood for short-lived non-energy products have the smallest mitigation potential, unless a large share of the wood products are used for energy purposes (replacing fossil fuels) after having served their initial purpose. If managed in a sustainable manner all of these strategies can contribute to the improvement of the social and environmental situation of the local community. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, the effect of crack tip constraint on near-tip stress and deformation fields in a ductile FCC single crystal is studied under mode I, plane strain conditions. To this end, modified boundary layer simulations within crystal plasticity framework are performed, neglecting elastic anisotropy. The first and second terms of the isotropic elastic crack tip field, which are governed by the stress intensity factor K and T-stress, are prescribed as remote boundary conditions and solutions pertaining to different levels of T-stress are generated. It is found that the near-tip deformation field, especially, the development of kink or slip shear bands, is sensitive to the constraint level. The stress distribution and the size and shape of the plastic zone near the crack tip are also strongly influenced by the level of T-stress, with progressive loss of crack tip constraint occurring as T-stress becomes more negative. A family of near-tip fields is obtained which are characterized by two terms (such as K and T or J and a constraint parameter Q) as in isotropic plastic solids.

The Kachchh region of Gujarat, India bore the brunt of a disastrous earthquake of magnitude M-w=7.6 that occurred on January 26, 2001. The major cause of failure of various structures including earthen dams was noted to be the presence of liquefiable alluvium in the foundation soil. Results of back-analysis of failures of Chang, Tappar, Kaswati and Rudramata earth dams using pseudo-static limit equilibrium approach presented in this paper confirm that the presence of liquefiable layer contributed to lesser factors of safety leading to a base type of failure that was also observed in the field. Following the earthquake, earth dams have been rehabilitated by the concerned authority and it is imperative that the reconstructed sections of earth dams be reanalyzed. It is also increasingly realized that risk assessment of dams in view of the large-scale investment made and probabilistic analysis is necessary. In this study, it is demonstrated that the probabilistic approach when used in conjunction with deterministic approach helps in providing a rational solution for quantification of safety of the dam and in the estimation of risk associated with the dam construction. The paper presents a novel slicing based method for computation of volume fractions in multi-material solids given as a B-rep whose faces are triangulated and shared by either one or two materials. Such objects occur naturally in geoscience applications and the said computation is necessary for property estimation problems and iterative forward modeling. Each facet in the model is cut by the planes delineating the given grid structure or grid cells. The method, instead of classifying the points or cells with respect to the solid, exploits the convexity of triangles and the simple axis-oriented disposition of the cutting surfaces to construct a novel intermediate space enumeration representation called slice-representation, from which both the cell containment test and the volume-fraction computation are done easily. Cartesian and cylindrical grids with uniform and non-uniform spacings have been dealt with in this paper. After slicing, each triangle contributes polygonal facets, with potential elliptical edges, to the grid cells through which it passes. The volume fractions of different materials in a grid cell that is in interaction with the material interfaces are obtained by accumulating the volume contributions computed from each facet in the grid cell. The method is fast, accurate, robust and memory efficient. Examples illustrating the method and performance are included in the paper.

The photochemical and redox properties of two newly synthesized tetrahydroquinoxaline-based squaraine dyes (SQ) are investigated Using femto- and nanosecond laser flash photolysis, pulse radiolysis, and cyclic voltammetry. In acetonitrile and dichloromethane, these squaraines exist its monomers in the zwitterionic form (lambda(max) approximate to 715 nm, epsilon(max) approximate to 1.66 x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1) in acetonitrile). Their excited sin-let states ((1)SQ*) exhibit a broad absorption hand at 480 nm, with singlet lifetimes of 44 and 123 ps for the two dyes. Both squaraines exhibit poor intersystem crossing efficiency (Phi(ISC) < 0.001). Their excited triplet states ((3)SQ*), however, Ire efficiently generated by triplet-triplet energy transfer Using triplet excited 9,10-dibromoanthracene. The excited triplet states of the squaraines dyes exhibit it broad absorption hand at ca. 560 nm (epsilon(triplet) approximate to 4.2 x 10(4) M-1 cm(-1)) and undergo deactivation via triplet-triplet annihilation and ground-state quenching processes. The oxidized forms of the investigated squaraines (SQ(center dot+)) exhibit absorption maxima at 510 and 610 nm.

The photocatalytic degradation of five anionic, eight cationic and three solvent dyes using combustion-synthesized nano-TiO2 (CSTiO2) and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 (DP-25) were evaluated to determine the effect of the functional group in the dye. The degradation of the dyes was quantified using the initial rate of decolorization and mineralization. The decolorization of the anionic dyes with CSTiO2 followed the order: indigo carmine > eosin Y > amido black 10B > alizarin cyanine green > orange G. The decolorization of the cationic dyes with DP-25 followed the order: malachite green > pyronin Y > rhodamine 6G > azure B > nile blue sulfate > auramine O approximate to acriflavine P approximate to safranin O. CSTiO2 showed higher rates of decolorization and mineralization for all the anionic dyes compared to DP-25, while DP-25 was better in terms of decolorization for most of the cationic dyes. The solvent dyes exhibited adsorption dependent decolorization. The order of decolorization and mineralization of the anionic and cationic dyes (a) with CS TiO2 and DP-25 was different and correlated with the surface properties of these catalysts (b) were rationalized with the molecular structure of the dye and the degradation pathway of the dye. A solvothermal reaction of Al2O3, H3BO3, pyridine, and H2O at 180 degrees C/7 days in the presence of organic amine molecules gave rise to four new aluminoborates, [(C6H18N2)(AlB6O13H3)], I; [(C5H16N2) (AlB5O10)]center dot 2H(2)O, II; [(C5H16N2)-(AlB5O10)], III; and [(C5H17N3)(AlB5O10)] center dot H2O, IV, with two- and three-dimensional structures. All the structures have been formed by the connectivity involving Al3+ ions and [B5O10] cyclic pentaborate units. In 1, the 3-connected trigonal nodes form a layer that resembles a graphite structure has been observed. The compounds II, III, and IV, have 4-connected nodes that forms a diamond related three-dimensional structure. The formation of solvatomorphs in II and III is noteworthy and has been observed first time in a family of amine template aluminoborates. A comparison of the various aluminoborate structures reveals subtle relationships between the organic amines (length of the amines) and the final framework structures. The compounds have been characterized using a variety of techniques including IR, second-order optical behavior, and MAS NMR studies.

In this paper an approach for obtaining depth and section modulus of the cantilever sheet pile wall using inverse reliability method is described. The proposed procedure employs inverse first order reliability method to obtain the design penetration depth and section modulus of the steel sheet pile wall in order that the reliability of the wall against failure modes must meet a desired level of safety. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to assess the effect of uncertainties in design parameters on the reliability of cantilever sheet pile walls. The analysis is performed by treating back fill soil properties, depth of the water table from the top of the sheet pile wall, yield strength of steel and section modulus of steel pile as random variables. Two limit states, viz., rotational and flexural failure of sheet pile wall are considered. The results using this approach are used to develop a set of reliability based design charts for different coefficients of variation of friction angle of the backfill (5%, 10% and 15%). System reliability considerations in terms of series and parallel systems are also studied.

Dehydroamino acids are important precursors for the synthesis of a number of unnatural amino acids and are structural components in many biologically active peptide derivatives. However, efficient synthetic procedures for their production in large amounts and without side reactions are limited. We report here an improved procedure for the synthesis of dehydroalanine and dehydroamino butyric acid from the carbonate derivatives of serine and threonine using TBAF. The antiselective E-2 elimination of the carbonate derivatives of serine and threonine using TBAF is milder and more efficient than other available procedures. The elimination reaction is completed in less than 10 min with various carbonate derivatives studied and the methodology is very efficient for the synthesis of dehydroamino acids and dehydropeptides. The procedure thus provides an easy access to key synthetic precursors and can be used to introduce interesting structural elements to designed peptides. Copyright

We report on the R-T measurement of carbon nanotube bundles from room temperature down to 1 K. The resistance at a particular temperature depends on the diameter of the bundle. The larger the bundle diameter is, the lower the value of the resistance. The resistance increases with the decrease in temperature as in the case of carbon, carbon glass resistance thermometer, and carbon nanotubes reported in the literature. The rate of the variation of resistance depends on the resistance of the bundle at room temperature which can be explored for the low temperature thermometry. Overall, the resistance and the sensitivity of the bundle depend on the bundle diameter which can be monitored easily.

A new approach is used to study the global dynamics of regenerative metal cutting in turning. The cut surface is modeled using a partial differential equation (PDE) coupled, via boundary conditions, to an ordinary differential equation (ODE) modeling the dynamics of the cutting tool. This approach automatically incorporates the multiple-regenerative effects accompanying self-interrupted cutting. Taylor's 3/4 power law model for the cutting force is adopted. Lower dimensional ODE approximations are obtained for the combined tool–workpiece model using Galerkin projections, and a bifurcation diagram computed. The unstable solution branch off the subcritical Hopf bifurcation meets the stable branch involving self-interrupted dynamics in a turning point bifurcation. The tool displacement at that turning point is estimated, which helps identify cutting parameter ranges where loss of stability leads to much larger self-interrupted motions than in some other ranges. Numerical bounds are also obtained on the parameter values which guarantee global stability of steady-state cutting, i.e., parameter values for which there exist neither unstable periodic motions nor self-interrupted motions about the stable equilibrium.

Supercritical processes are gaining importance in the last few years in the food, environmental and pharmaceutical product processing. The design of any supercritical process needs accurate experimental data on solubilities of solids in the supercritical fluids (SCFs). The empirical equations are quite successful in correlating the solubilities of solid compounds in SCF both in the presence and absence of cosolvents. In this work, existing solvate complex models are discussed and a new set of empirical equations is proposed. These equations correlate the solubilities of solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (both in the presence and absence of cosolvents) as a function of temperature, density of supercritical carbon dioxide and the mole fraction of cosolvent. The accuracy of the proposed models was evaluated by correlating 15 binary and 18 ternary systems. The proposed models provided the best overall correlations. (C) 2009 Elsevier BA/. Crystals of Eu-(Gly-Gly-Gly).(H2O)5.(ClO4)3 are triclinic, spacegroup P1BAR with a = 9.123 (2), b = 11.185 (5), c = 11.426 (2) angstrom; alpha = 90.79 (2), beta = 98.08 (1), gamma = 98.57 (2)-degrees; Z = 2. The europium cation is surrounded by four oxygens from three different peptide units and four oxygens from water molecules. The geometry around the metal is a distorted bi-capped trigonal prism. The peptide backbone conformation in this complex is compared with those in the free peptide and in various metal complexes. Considerable differences are observed between Eu(III) and Ca(II) complexes of triglycine. (C) Munksgaard 1994.
