The evolution of crystallographic texture in a nanocrystalline nickel-20 wt% cobalt alloy has been investigated for deformation up to large strains. The effect of texture on magnetic properties has been evaluated. The material shows characteristic copper-type texture at large strain levels. Microstructural examinations indicate that the evolution of texture is assisted by deformation-induced grain growth. The values of saturation magnetization and coercivity have been correlated with the crystallographic texture and grain size. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The AA5086 aluminum alloy sheets with different starting textures were subjected to shock wave deformation with an input impulse of similar to 0.2 Ns. Microstructural examination indicate no significant change in grain size; however, the evolution of substructure manifesting intra-granular misorientation was evident. The improvement in hardness indicates the absence of recovery and strain hardening during shock deformation. Shock deformed samples show characteristic texture evolution with high Brass {110}< 112 > component. The study demonstrates the viability of high velocity forming of AA5086 aluminum alloy sheet using shock wave. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Results from interface shear tests on sand-geosynthetic interfaces are examined in light of surface roughness of the interacting geosynthetic material. Three different types of interface shear tests carried out in the frame of direct shear-test setup are compared to understand the effect of parameters like box fixity and symmetry on the interface shear characteristics. Formation of shear bands close to the interface is visualized in the tests and the bands are analyzed using image-segmentation techniques in MATLAB. A woven geotextile with moderate roughness and a geomembrane with minimal roughness are used in the tests. The effect of surface roughness of the geosynthetic material on the formation of shear bands, movement of sand particles, and interface shear parameters are studied and compared through visual observations, image analyses, and image-segmentation techniques.

Two hydroxycinnamic acids viz., p-coumaric, and caffeic acids have been extracted and purified from Parthenium hysterophorus, subsequently characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography. The optimized structures of these acids were calculated in terms of density functional theory by Gaussian 09. The validation of experimental and theoretically obtained data for structural parameters such as bond lengths and bond angles has have been carried out to analyze the statistical significance by curve fitting analysis and the values of correlation coefficient found to be 0.985, 0.992, and 0.984, 0.975 in p-coumaric, and caffeic acids, respectively. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies show the eventual charge transfer interaction within the molecule. Thermal studies were also carried out by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTA), and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

3-Aryl-2-propenoic acid derivatives undergo interesting reactions with hot triethylamine. Substrates like 6 having a methoxyl with a nitro in the ortho and cyanoacrylic derivatives in the para positions give O-demethylated products, for example, entacapone 7. On the other hand compounds like 16 having the NO2 in the para and cyanoacrylic in the ortho position undergo reduction and vinylogation. The latter phenomenon is observed in the absence of the NO2 group also. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We derive analytical expressions for probability distribution function (PDF) for electron transport in a simple model of quantum junction in presence of thermal fluctuations. Our approach is based on the large deviation theory combined with the generating function method. For large number of electrons transferred, the PDF is found to decay exponentially in the tails with different rates due to applied bias. This asymmetry in the PDF is related to the fluctuation theorem. Statistics of fluctuations are analyzed in terms of the Fano factor. Thermal fluctuations play a quantitative role in determining the statistics of electron transfer; they tend to suppress the average current while enhancing the fluctuations in particle transfer. This gives rise to both bunching and antibunching phenomena as determined by the Fano factor. The thermal fluctuations and shot noise compete with each other and determine the net (effective) statistics of particle transfer. Exact analytical expression is obtained for delay time distribution. The optimal values of the delay time between successive electron transfers can be lowered below the corresponding shot noise values by tuning the thermal effects. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

An as-cast Al-7 % Si alloy was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) for up to 10 turns at temperatures of 298 or 445 K. The HPT-processed samples had ultrafine-grained structures and they were tested in tension at room temperature at various strain rates in the range from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 1.0 x 10(-2) s(-1). The contributions of grain boundary sliding (GBS) to the total strain were measured directly using atomic force microscopy. Samples simultaneously showing both high strength and high ductility contained the highest fractions of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGB) and exhibited the highest contributions from GBS, whereas samples showing high strength but low ductility gave negligible values for the sliding contributions. It is concluded that high strength and high ductility require both an ultrafine grain size and a high fraction of HAGB.

An equiatomic NiTiCuFe multi-component alloy with simple body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic solid-solution phases in the microstructure was processed by vacuum induction melting furnace under dynamic Ar atmosphere. High-temperature uniaxial compression experiments were conducted on it in the temperature range of 1073 K to 1303 K (800 degrees C to 1030 degrees C) and strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10(-1) s(-1). The data generated were analyzed with the aid of the dynamic materials model through which power dissipation efficiency and instability maps were generated so as to identify the governing deformation mechanisms that are operative in different temperature-strain rate regimes with the aid of complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate that the stable domain for the high temperature deformation of the multi-component alloy occurs in the temperature range of 1173 K to 1303 K (900 degrees C to 1030 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot range of 10(-3) to 10(-1.2) s(-1), and the deformation is unstable at T = 1073 K to 1153 K (800 degrees C to 880 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot = 10(-3) to 10(-1.4) s(-1) as well as T = 1223 K to 1293 K (950 degrees C to 1020 degrees C) and (epsilon) over dot = 10(-1.4) to 10(-1) s(-1), with adiabatic shear banding, localized plastic flow, or cracking being the unstable mechanisms. A constitutive equation that describes the flow stress of NiTiCuFe multi-component alloy as a function of strain rate and deformation temperature was also determined. This paper critically analyzes, for the first time, the effect of nanofluid on thermally fully developed magnetohydrodynamic flows through microchannel, by considering combined effects of externally applied pressure gradient and electroosmosis. The classical boundary condition of uniform wall heat flux is considered, and the effects of viscous dissipation as well as Joule heating have been taken into account. Closed-form analytical expressions for the pertinent velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations are obtained, in order to examine the role of nanofluids in influencing the fully developed thermal transport in electroosmotic microflows under the effect of magnetic field. Fundamental considerations are invoked to ascertain the consequences of particle agglomeration on the thermophysical properties of the nanofluid. The present theoretical formalism addresses the details of the interparticle interaction kinetics in tune with the pertinent variations in the effective particulate dimensions, volume fractions of the nanoparticles, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate system. It is revealed that the inclusion of nanofluid changes the transport characteristics and system irreversibility to a considerable extent and can have significant consequences in the design of electroosmotically actuated microfluidic systems.

Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few-atomic-layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

A micromechanical approach is considered here to predict the deformation behaviour of Rheocast A356 (Al-Si-Mg) alloy. Two representative volume elements (RVEs) are modelled in the finite element (FE) framework. Two dimensional approximated microstructures are generated assuming elliptic grains, based on the grain size, shape factor and area fraction of the primary Al phase of the said alloy at different processing condition. Plastic instability is shown using stress and strain distribution between the Al rich primary and Si rich eutectic phases under different boundary conditions. Boundary conditions are applied on the approximated RVEs in such a manner, so that they represent the real life situation depending on their position on a cylindrical tensile test sample. FE analysis is carried out using commercial finite element code ABAQUS without specifying any damage or failure criteria. Micro-level in-homogeneity leads to incompatible deformation between the constituent phases of the rheocast alloy and steers plastic strain localisation. Plastic stain localised regions within the RVEs are predicted as the favourable sites for void nucleation. Subsequent growth of nucleated voids leads to final failure of the materials under investigation.

This paper deals with dynamic recrystallization (DRX), static recrystallization, and grain growth phenomena of pure magnesium after equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) by route A and B-C at 523 K (250 A degrees C) followed by 80 pct cold rolling. The ECAP-deformed and the subsequently rolled samples were annealed at 373 K and 773 K (100 A degrees C and 500 A degrees C). The associated changes in the microstructure and texture were studied using electron back-scattered diffraction. ECAP produced an average grain size of 12 to 18 A mu m with B and C-2 fiber textures. Subsequent rolling led to an average grain size 8 to 10 A mu m with basal texture fiber parallel to ND. There was no noticeable increase in the average grain size on annealing at 373 K (100 A degrees C). However, significant increase in the average grain size occurred at 773 K (500 A degrees C). The occurrence of different DRX mechanisms was detected: discontinuous dynamic recrystallization was attributed to basal slip activity and continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization to prismatic/pyramidal slip systems. Only continuous static recrystallization could be observed on annealing.

Moly-TZM was deformed at constant strain rate of 1.0 s(-1) to investigate the high strain rate deformation behaviour by microstructural and stress response change within a temperature range of 1400-1700 degrees C. To correlate the deformation behaviour with orientational change, recrystallization and recovery of the material, the microstructural investigation was undertaken using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). Depending on the grain size and orientation spread recrystallized grains were identified and texture was calculated. Change in grain boundary characteristics with increasing temperature was determined by the misorientation angle distribution for the deformed and recrystallized grains. Subgrain coalescence and increase in subgrain size with increasing temperature was observed, indicating recrystallization not only occurred from the nucleation of the dislocation free grains in grain boundaries but also from the subgrain rotation and merging of the subgrains by annihilation of the low angle grain boundaries. Detailed studies on the evolution of texture of recrystallized grains showed continuous increase in <001> fiber texture in recrystallised grains, in contrast to a mixed fiber <001> +<111> for the deformed grains.

For obtaining dynamic response of structure to high frequency shock excitation spectral elements have several advantages over conventional methods. At higher frequencies transverse shear and rotary inertia have a predominant role. These are represented by the First order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). But not much work is reported on spectral elements with FSDT. This work presents a new spectral element based on the FSDT/Mindlin Plate Theory which is essential for wave propagation analysis of sandwich plates. Multi-transformation method is used to solve the coupled partial differential equations, i.e., Laplace transforms for temporal approximation and wavelet transforms for spatial approximation. The formulation takes into account the axial-flexure and shear coupling. The ability of the element to represent different modes of wave motion is demonstrated. Impact on the derived wave motion characteristics in the absence of the developed spectral element is discussed. The transient response using the formulated element is validated by the results obtained using Finite Element Method (FEM) which needs significant computational effort. Experimental results are provided which confirms the need to having the developed spectral element for the high frequency response of structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
