Polyolefin based blends have tremendous commercial importance in view of their exceptional properties. In this study the interface of a biphasic polymer blend of PE (polyethylene) and PEO (polyethylene oxide) has been tailored to reduce the interfacial tension between the phases and to render finer morphology. This was accomplished by employing various strategies like addition of maleated PE (PE grafted maleic anhydride), immobilizing PE chains, ex situ, onto MWNTs by covalent grafting, and in situ grafting of PE chains onto MWNTs during melt processing. Multiwalled nanotubes (MWNTs) with different surface functional groups have been synthesized either a priori or were facilitated during melt mixing at higher temperature. NH2 terminated MWNTs were synthesized by grafting ethylene diamine (EDA) onto carboxyl functionalized carbon nanotubes (COOH(MWNTs) and further, was used to reactively couple with maleated PE to immobilize PE chains on the surface of MWNTs. The covalent coupling of maleated PE with NH2 terminated MWNTs was also realized in situ in the melt extruder at high temperature. Both NH2 terminated MWNTs and the in situ formed PE brush on MWNTs during melt mixing, revealed a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the blend besides remarkably improving the dispersion of the minor phase (PEO) in the blends. Structural properties of the composites were evaluated and the tensile fractured morphology was assessed using scanning electron microscopy.

The addition of 3 wt% Cu to heat-resistant SUS 304H austenitic steel enhances its high temperature mechanical properties. To further improve the properties, particularly the creep resistance and ductility at high temperatures, a post-solutionizing heat-treatment method that involves an intermediated annealing either at 700 or 800 degrees C after solutionizing for durations up to 180 min was employed. The purpose this heat-treatment is to precipitate planar Cr23C6 at the grain boundaries, which results in the boundaries getting serrated. Detailed microstructural analyses of these `grain boundary engineered' alloys was conducted and their mechanical performance, both at room temperature and at 750 degrees C, was evaluated. While the grain size and texture are unaffected due to the high temperature hold, the volume fraction of Sigma 3 twin boundaries was found to increase significantly. While the strength enhancement was only marginal, the ductility was found to increase significantly, especially at high temperature. A marked increase in the creep resistance was also noted, which is attributed to the reduction of the grain boundary sliding by the grain boundary serrations and the suppression of grain boundary cavitation through the optimization of the volume fraction and spacing of the Cr23C6 precipitates. The special heat-treatment performed with holding time of 3 h at 700 degrees C resulted in the optimum combination of strength, ductility and creep resistance at high temperature. Non-pedogenic carbonates, such as carbonate cement and nodules in the sandstones, are quite common in the terrestrial geological record. Unlike pedogenic carbonates, their stable isotope ratios lack investigations for paleo-climatic reconstructions. The present investigation therefore, explores the possibility of use of stable isotope studies of non-pedogenic carbonates from the Mb-Pleistocene Siwalik Group of sediments exposed in the Ramnagar sub-basin of the NW Himalaya. Petrographic studies reveal the dominance of micrite fabric in carbonate nodules both of pedogenic and non-pedogenic samples irrespective of specific stratigraphic unit However, calcite as cement in the sandstones shows the dominance of micrite fabric in the younger in age sediments. Seventy-two non-pedogenic carbonate samples from the carbonate nodules and cement in the Siwalik sandstones, ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 12.2 Ma, were analyzed for delta C-13 and delta O-18 values. The delta C-13 values vary from -24.77 parts per thousand to -1.1 parts per thousand and delta O-18 values vary from -15.34 parts per thousand to -7.81 parts per thousand. Pedogenic and non-pedogenic carbonates ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 6 Ma have largely similar delta C-13 values and the range of delta C-13 values indicate the dominance of C-4 type of vegetation. However, unlike pedogenic carbonates which showed the dominance of C-3 type of vegetation pre- 7 Ma on the basis of delta C-13 -depleted isotopic values (Singh et al., 2011), delta C-13 values are largely enriched in the corresponding aged non-pedogenic carbonates revealing no information on specific type of vegetation. Likewise, paleoprecipitational reconstructions from delta O-18 values in pedogenic carbonates showed a progressive increase in aridity from similar to 12 Ma to recent excluding short term increases in rainfall/monsoon intensity at around 10 Ma, 5 Ma, and 1.8 Ma (Singh et al., 2012). On the contrary, such reconstructions are not possible from the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates and indeed the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates are largely depleted to as much as 6 parts per thousand from the corresponding pedogenic carbonates. Such differences in delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates from pedogenic carbonates are primarily due to the dependence of the former on groundwater conditions responsible for precipitating carbonate. Further, a comparison of isotopic values between non-pedogenic and pedogenic carbonates can be interpreted that post-6 Ma and pre-6 Ma non-pedogenic carbonates were largely formed by shallow and deep groundwater conditions respectively. The result of these investigative studies therefore, suggests that the stable delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates, unlike the pedogenic carbonates and irrespective of nature of calcite fabric, showed their little importance in paleoclimatic and paleoecological reconstructions. Peptide based self assembled nanostructures have attracted growing interest in recent years due to their numerous potential applications particularly in biomedical sciences. Di-peptide Phe-Phe was shown previously to self-assemble into nanotube like structures. In this work, we studied the affect of peptide backbone length and conformational flexibility on the self assembly process by using two dipeptides based on the Phe-Phe backbone (beta Phe-Phe and beta Phe-Delta Phe): one containing a flexible beta Phe amino acid, and the other containing both a flexible bPhe as well as a backbone constraining Alpha Phe (alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) amino acid. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that these new di-peptides can self-assemble into nanotubes having different properties than the native Phe-Phe nanotubes. These nanotubes were stable over a broad range of temperatures and the introduction of non-natural amino acids provided them with stability against the action of nonspecific proteases. Moreover, these dipeptides showed no cytotoxicity towards HeLa and L929 cells, and were able to encapsulate small drug molecules. We further showed that anticancerous drug mitoxantrone was more efficient in killing HeLa and B6F10 cells when entrapped in nanotubes as compared to free mitoxantrone. Therefore, these beta-phenylalanine and alpha, beta-dehydrophenylalanine containing dipeptide nanotubes may be useful in the development of biocompatible and proteolytically stable drug delivery vehicles.

Primates exhibit laterality in hand usage either in terms of (a) hand with which an individual solves a task or while solving a task that requires both hands, executes the most complex action, that is, hand preference, or (b) hand with which an individual executes actions most efficiently, that is, hand performance. Observations from previous studies indicate that laterality in hand usage might reflect specialization of the two hands for accomplishing tasks that require maneuvering dexterity or physical strength. However, no existing study has investigated handedness with regard to this possibility. In this study, we examined laterality in hand usage in urban free-ranging bonnet macaques, Macaca radiata with regard to the above possibility. While solving four distinct food extraction tasks which varied in the number of steps involved in the food extraction process and the dexterity required in executing the individual steps, the macaques consistently used one hand for extracting food (i.e., task requiring maneuvering dexterity)the maneuvering hand, and the other hand for supporting the body (i.e., task requiring physical strength)the supporting hand. Analogously, the macaques used the maneuvering hand for the spontaneous routine activities that involved maneuvering in three-dimensional space, such as grooming, and hitting an opponent during an agonistic interaction, and the supporting hand for those that required physical strength, such as pulling the body up while climbing. Moreover, while solving a task that ergonomically forced the usage of a particular hand, the macaques extracted food faster with the maneuvering hand as compared to the supporting hand, demonstrating the higher maneuvering dexterity of the maneuvering hand. As opposed to the conventional ideas of handedness in non-human primates, these observations demonstrate division of labor between the two hands marked by their consistent usage across spontaneous and experimental tasks requiring maneuvering in three-dimensional space or those requiring physical strength. We present a comparative study of the temperature dependent magnetic properties and electron paramagnetic resonance parameters of nano and bulk samples of Bi0.2Sr0.8MnO3 (BSMO). Bulk BSMO is known to have a high T-N similar to 260K and robust charge ordering (T-CO similar to 360 K). We confirm that the bulk sample shows an antiferromagnetic transition around similar to 260K and a spin-glass transition similar to 40 K. For the nano sample, we see a clear ferromagnetic transition at around similar to 120 K. We conclude that spin glass state, which is present due to the co-existence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states in the bulk sample, is suppressed in the nano sample and ferromagnetism is induced instead. The well-known classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the free energy barrier towards formation of a nucleus of critical size of the new stable phase within the parent metastable phase fails to take into account the influence of other metastable phases having density/order intermediate between the parent metastable phase and the final stable phase. This lacuna can be more serious than capillary approximation or spherical shape assumption made in CNT. This issue is particularly significant in ice nucleation because liquid water shows rich phase diagram consisting of two (high and low density) liquid phases in supercooled state. The explanations of thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of supercooled water often invoke the possible influence of a liquid-liquid transition between two metastable liquid phases. To investigate both the role of thermodynamic anomalies and presence of distinct metastable liquid phases in supercooled water on ice nucleation, we employ density functional theoretical approach to find nucleation free energy barrier in different regions of phase diagram. The theory makes a number of striking predictions, such as a dramatic lowering of nucleation barrier due to presence of a metastable intermediate phase and crossover in the dependence of free energy barrier on temperature near liquid-liquid critical point. These predictions can be tested by computer simulations as well as by controlled experiments. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The spin dependent Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) is studied on a triangular lattice using numerical diagonalization technique and Monte-Carlo simulation algorithm. Magnetic properties have been explored for different values of parameters: on-site Coulomb correlation U, exchange interaction J and filling of electrons. We have found that the ground state configurations exhibit long range Neel order, ferromagnetism or a mixture of both as J is varied. The magnetic moments of itinerant (d) and localized U) electrons are also studied. For the one-fourth filling case we found no magnetic moment from d- and f-electrons for U less than a critical value. `.2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A family of high molecular weight castor oil (CO)-based biodegradable polyanhydrides was synthesized by a catalyst-free melt-condensation reaction between prepolymers of CO and sebacic acid (SA). The structure of the polymers was characterized by H-1 NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which indicated the formation of the anhydride bond along the polymer backbone. Thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction confirmed the semicrystalline nature of the polymers. Incorporation of SA enhanced the crystallinity of the polymer. The hydrophobic nature of these polymers was revealed by contact angle goniometry. Water wettability decreased with increase in SA content. Compressive tests demonstrated a sharp increase in strength and decrease in ductility with increasing SA content. In vitro hydrolytic degradation studies indicated surface-eroding behavior. The degradation rate decreased with an increase of SA content in the polymers because of increased crystallinity. The release studies of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic dyes followed zero-order kinetics. In vitro cell studies to assess the cytotoxicity of the polymer confirmed minimal toxicity of the degradation products. Thus, a family of CO-SA polyanhydrides have been synthesized and characterized for controlled release applications where the physical, mechanical, and degradation kinetics can be modulated by varying the weight fraction of the prepolymers.

Recent advances in nanotechnology have paved ways to various techniques for designing and fabricating novel nanostructures incorporating noble metal nanoparticles, for a wide range of applications. The interaction of light with metal nanoparticles (NPs) can generate strongly localized electromagnetic fields (Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance, LSPR) at certain wavelengths of the incident beam. In assemblies or structures where the nanoparticles are placed in close proximity, the plasmons of individual metallic NPs can be strongly coupled to each other via Coulomb interactions. By arranging the metallic NPs in a chiral (e.g. helical) geometry, it is possible to induce collective excitations, which lead to differential optical response of the structures to right-and left circularly polarized light (e.g. Circular Dichroism - CD). Earlier reports in this field include novel techniques of synthesizing metallic nanoparticles on biological helical templates made from DNA, proteins etc. In the present work, we have developed new ways of fabricating chiral complexes made of metallic NPs, which demonstrate a very strong chiro-optical response in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Using DDA (Discrete Dipole Approximation) simulations, we theoretically studied the conditions responsible for large and broadband chiro-optical response. This system may be used for various applications, for example those related to polarization control of visible light, sensing of proteins and other chiral bio-molecules, and many more.

Using first principles calculations, we show that the storage capacity as well as desorption temperature of MOFs can be significantly enhanced by decorating pyridine (a common linker in MOFs) by metal atoms. The storage capacity of metal-pyridine complexes are found to be dependent on the type of decorating metal atom. Among the 3d transition metal atoms, Sc turns out to be the most efficient storing unto four H-2 molecules. Most importantly, Sc does not suffer dimerisation on the surface of pyridine, keeping the storage capacity of every metal atom intact. Based on these findings, we propose a metal-decorated pyridine-based MOFs, which has potential to meet the required H-2 storage capacity for vehicular usage. The potential of endophytes, particularly endophytic fungi, capable of demonstrating desirable functional traits worth exploitation using red biotechnology is well established. However, these discoveries have not yet translated into industrial bioprocesses for commercial production of biopharmaceuticals using fungal endophytes. Here, we define the current challenges in transforming curiosity driven discoveries into industrial scale endophyte biotechnology. The possible practical, feasible, and sustainable strategies that can lead to harnessing fungal endophyte-mediated pharmaceutical products are discussed.

Taxol (R) (generic name paclitaxel) represents one of the most clinically valuable natural products known to mankind in the recent past. More than two decades have elapsed since the notable discovery of the first Taxol (R) producing endophytic fungus, which was followed by a plethora of reports on other endophytes possessing similar biosynthetic potential. However, industrial-scale Taxol (R) production using fungal endophytes, although seemingly promising, has not seen the light of the day. In this opinion article, we embark on the current state of knowledge on Taxol (R) biosynthesis focusing on the chemical ecology of its producers, and ask whether it is actually possible to produce Taxol (R) using endophyte biotechnology. The key problems that have prevented the exploitation of potent endophytic fungi by industrial bioprocesses for sustained production of Taxol (R) are discussed.

Molybdenum disulphide is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide that has recently raised considerable interest due to its unique semiconducting and opto-electronic properties. Although several theoretical studies have suggested an electronic phase transition in molybdenum disulphide, there has been a lack of experimental evidence. Here we report comprehensive studies on the pressure-dependent electronic, vibrational, optical and structural properties of multilayered molybdenum disulphide up to 35 GPa. Our experimental results reveal a structural lattice distortion followed by an electronic transition from a semiconducting to metallic state at similar to 19 GPa, which is confirmed by ab initio calculations. The metallization arises from the overlap of the valance and conduction bands owing to sulphur-sulphur interactions as the interlayer spacing reduces. The electronic transition affords modulation of the opto-electronic gain in molybdenum disulphide. This pressure-tuned behaviour can enable the development of novel devices with multiple phenomena involving the strong coupling of the mechanical, electrical and optical properties of layered nanomaterials.
