The crystal structure of a tripeptide Boc-Leu-Val-Ac(12)c-OMe (1) is determined, which incorporates a bulky 1-aminocyclododecane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac(12)c) side chain. The peptide adopts a semi-extended backbone conformation for Leu and Val residues, while the backbone torsion angles of the C-,C--dialkylated residue Ac(12)c are in the helical region of the Ramachandran map. The molecular packing of 1 revealed a unique supramolecular twisted parallel -sheet coiling into a helical architecture in crystals, with the bulky hydrophobic Ac(12)c side chains projecting outward the helical column. This arrangement resembles the packing of peptide helices in crystal structures. Although short oligopeptides often assemble as parallel or anti-parallel -sheet in crystals, twisted or helical -sheet formation has been observed in a few examples of dipeptide crystal structures. Peptide 1 presents the first example of a tripeptide showing twisted -sheet assembly in crystals. Copyright (c) 2016 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Pt-modified beta-NiAl bond coats are applied over the superalloys for oxidation protection in jet engine applications. However, as shown in this study, it also enhances the growth of the interdiffusion zone developed between the bond coat and the superalloy along with brittle precipitates. Location of the Kirkendall plane indicates that a precipitate free sublayer grows from the bond coat, whereas another sublayer grows from the superalloy containing very high volume fraction of precipitates. With increasing Pt content, thickness of both the sublayers increases because of an increase in diffusion rates of the components. Quantitative electron probe microanalysis indicates high concentration of refractory components in the precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy shows that Rene N5 superalloy produces TCP phases mu and P, whereas CMSX-4 superalloy produces mu and sigma in the interdiffusion zone. With increasing Pt content in the bond coat, the average size of the precipitates decreases when coupled with Rene N5. Precipitates become much finer when the same bond coats are coupled with CMSX-4. Nano-crystals of LiNbxTa1 (-) O-x(3) were evolved by subjecting melt-quenched 1.5Li(2)O-2B(2)O(3)-xNb(2)O(5)-(1 - x)Ta2O5 glasses (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.00) to a controlled 3-h isothermal heat treatment between 530 and 560 degrees C. Detailed X-ray diffraction and Raman spectral studies confirmed the formation of nano-crystalline LiNbxTa1 (-) O-x(3) along with a minor phase of ferroelectric and non-linear optic Li2B4O7. The sizes of the nanocrystals evolved in the glass were in the range of 19-37 nm for x = 0-0.75 and 23-45 nm for x = 1.00. Electron microscopic studies confirmed a transformation of the morphology of the nano-crystallites from dendritic star-shaped spherulites for x = 0 to rod-shaped structures for x = 1.00 brought about by a coalescence of crystallites. Broad Maker-fringe patterns (recorded at 532 nm) were obtained by subjecting the heat-treated glass plates to 1064 nm fundamental radiation. However, an effective second order non-linear optic coefficient, d(eff), of 0.45 pm/V, which is nearly 1.2 times the d(36) of KDP single crystal, was obtained for a 560 degrees C/3 h heat-treated glass of the representative composition x = 0.50 comprising 37 nm sized crystallites. We develop a scheme based on a real space microscopic analysis of particle dynamics to ascertain the relevance of dynamical facilitation as a mechanism of structural relaxation in glass-forming liquids. By analyzing the spatial organization of localized excitations within clusters of mobile particles in a colloidal glass former and examining their partitioning into shell-like and corelike regions, we establish the existence of a crossover from a facilitation-dominated regime at low area fractions to a collective activated hopping-dominated one close to the glass transition. This crossover occurs in the vicinity of the area fraction at which the peak of the mobility transfer function exhibits a maximum and the morphology of cooperatively rearranging regions changes from stringlike to a compact form. Collectively, our findings suggest that dynamical facilitation is dominated by collective hopping close to the glass transition, thereby constituting a crucial step towards identifying the correct theoretical scenario for glass formation.

Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanotubes of micron length and average diameter 100 nm have been synthesized by a controlled template-assisted electrochemical deposition technique. Structure and morphology of the synthesized nanotubes have been well characterized by using microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. HRTEM and XRD analysis revealed the crystalline planes of Gd2O3 nanotubes. Magnetic measurements of the aligned Gd2O3 nanotubes have been performed for both parallel and perpendicular orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the axis of the Gd2O3 nanotube array. Large bifurcation in ZFC-FC over the regime of 2-320 K without any signature of long range magnetic ordering confirms the presence of SPM clusters in Gd2O3 nanotubes. Also, large magnetocaloric effect is observed in the cryogenic temperature regime. No anisotropy is seen at the low temperature region but is found to evolve with temperature and becomes significant 300 K. These nanotubes can be considered as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at cryogenic temperature. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A synthetic strategy is described for the co-crystallization of four-and five-component molecular crystals, based on the fact that if any particular chemical constituent of a lower cocrystal is found in two different structural environments, these differences may be exploited to increase the number of components in the solid. 2-Methylresorcinol and tetramethylpyrazine are basic template molecules that allow for further supramolecular homologation. Ten stoichiometric quaternary cocrystals and one quintinary cocrystal with some solid solution character are reported. Cocrystals that do not lend themselves to such homologation are termed synthetic dead ends.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were prepared on AZ31B magnesium alloy using alkaline silicate electrolyte at different current densities (0.026, 0.046 and 0.067 A/cm(2)). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis of the coating revealed an irregular porous structure with cracked morphology. Compositional analysis carried out for MAO coating showed the presence of almost an equal amount of Mg and 0 (34 wt.%) apart from other elements such as F, Si and AI. The cross-sectional FESEM images clearly portrayed that the MAO coating was dense along with the presence of very few fine pores. The surface roughness (R-a) of the coatings increased with an increase in the current density. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies were carried out for both the bare and MAO coated AZ31B Mg alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution. The corrosion potential (E-corr) and corrosion current density (i(corr)) values obtained for the bare substrate were -1.49 V and 46 mu A/cm(2), respectively. The coating prepared at 0.046 A/cm(2) exhibited the lowest i(corr) value of 7.79 x 10(-10) A/cm(2) and highest polarization resistance (41.6 M Omega cm(2)) attesting to the better corrosion resistance of the coating compared to other samples. EIS results also indicated almost similar corrosion behavior for the MAO coatings. Mott-Schottky analysis showed n-type and p-type semiconductor behavior for the oxide layer present on the bare magnesium alloy and MAO coatings respectively. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The Cu2SnS3 thin films were deposited using an economic, solution processible, spin coating technique. The films were found to possess a tetragonal crystal structure using X-ray diffraction. The film morphology and the particle size were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The various planes in the crystal were observed using transmission electron microscopy. The optimum band gap of 1.23 eV and a high absorption coefficient of 104 cm-1 corroborate its application as a photoactive material. The visible and infrared (IR) photo response was studied for various illumination intensities. The current increased by one order from a dark current of 0.31 mu A to a current of 1.78 mu A at 1.05 suns and 8.7 mu A under 477.7 mW/cm(2) IR illumination intensity, at 3 V applied bias. The responsivity, sensitivity, external quantum efficiency and specific detectivity were found to be 10.93 mA/W, 5.74, 2.47% and 3.47 x 10(10) Jones respectively at 1.05 suns and 16.32 mA/W, 27.16, 2.53% and 5.10 x 10(10) Jones respectively at 477.7 mW/cm(2) IR illumination. The transient photoresponse was measured both for visible and IR illuminations. (C) 2016 Author(s).
