Aims. In this work we search for the signatures of low-dimensional chaos in the temporal behavior of the Kepler-field blazar W2R 1946+42. Methods. We use a publicly available, similar to 160 000-point-long and mostly equally spaced light curve of W2R 1946+42. We apply the correlation integral method to both real datasets and phase randomized surrogates. Results. We are not able to confirm the presence of low-dimensional chaos in the light curve. This result, however, still leads to some important implications for blazar emission mechanisms, which are discussed.

We report an enhanced actuation in bulk carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under coupled electric and magnetic fields, which is much higher than that evaluated in the presence of individual fields. Coupled electric and magnetic fields induce a directional actuation demonstrating a transformation from polarity independent to dependent actuation behavior of CNTs. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are performed to understand this transformation in the bulk CNTs. Moreover, actuations along radial and axial directions of CNTs have also demonstrated a similar directional behavior.

We report results of controlled tuning of the local density of states (LDOS) in versatile, flexible, and hierarchical self assembled plasmonic templates. Using 5 nm diameter gold (Au) spherical nanoantenna within a polymer template randomly dispersed with quantum dots, we show how the photoluminescence intensity and lifetime anisotropy of these dots can be significantly enhanced through LDOS tuning. Finite difference time domain simulations corroborate the experimental observations and extend the regime of enhancement to a wider range of geometric and spectral parameters bringing out the versatility of these functional plasmonic templates. It is also demonstrated how the templates act as plasmonic resonators for effectively engineer giant enhancement of the scattering efficiency of these nano antenna embedded in the templates. Our work provides an alternative method to achieve spontaneous emission intensity and anisotropy enhancement with true nanoscale plasmon resonators. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

The thermally evaporated As20Sb20S60 amorphous film of 800 nm thickness was subjected to light exposure for photo induced studies. The as-prepared and illuminated thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The optical band gap was reduced due to photo induced effects along with the increase in disorder. These optical properties changes are due to the change of homopolar bond densities. The core level peak shifting in XPS spectra and Raman shift supports the optical changes happening in the film due to light exposure.

Pure ZnO and co-doped (Mn, Ag) ZnO nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by chemical co-precipitation method without using a capping agent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirms the presence of wurtzite (hexagonal) crystal structure similar to undoped ZnO, suggesting that doped Mn, Ag ions are substituted to the regular Zn sites. The morphology of the samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical composition of pure and co-doped ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectroscopy (EDAX). Optical absorption properties were determined by UV-vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectrophotometer. The incorporation of Ag+, Mn2+ in the place of Zn2+ provoked to decrease the size of nanocrystals as compared to pure ZnO. Optical absorption measurements indicates blue shift in the absorption band edge upon Ag, Mn ions doped ZnO nanoparticles.

The mode I fracture toughness, K-Ic, of ductile bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibits a high degree of specimen-to-specimen variability. By conducting fracture experiments in modes I and II, we demonstrate that the observed high variability in mode I, vis-a-vis mode II, is a result of highly variable propensity for the conversion of shear bands into cracks in mode I whereas in mode II, crack growth direction is fixed. Thus, the measured variability in K-Ic is intrinsic to the nature of BMGs. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The seasonality and mutual dependence of aerosol optical properties and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity under varying meteorological conditions at the high-altitude Nainital site (2km) in the Indo-Gangetic Plains were examined using nearly year-round measurements (June 2011 to March 2012) at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement mobile facility as part of the Regional Aerosol Warming Experiment-Ganges Valley Aerosol Experiment of the Indian Space Research Organization and the U.S. Department of Energy. The results from collocated measurements provided enhanced aerosol scattering and absorption coefficients, CCN concentrations, and total condensation nuclei concentrations during the dry autumn and winter months. The CCN concentration (at a supersaturation of 0.46) was higher during the periods of high aerosol absorption (single scattering albedo (SSA)<0.80) than during the periods of high aerosol scattering (SSA>0.85), indicating that the aerosol composition seasonally changes and influences the CCN activity. The monthly mean CCN activation ratio (at a supersaturation of 0.46) was highest (>0.7) in late autumn (November); this finding is attributed to the contribution of biomass-burning aerosols to CCN formation at high supersaturation conditions.

Based on an ultrasound-modulated optical tomography experiment, a direct, quantitative recovery of Young's modulus (E) is achieved from the modulation depth (M) in the intensity autocorrelation. The number of detector locations is limited to two in orthogonal directions, reducing the complexity of the data gathering step whilst ensuring against an impoverishment of the measurement, by employing ultrasound frequency as a parameter to vary during data collection. The M and E are related via two partial differential equations. The first one connects M to the amplitude of vibration of the scattering centers in the focal volume and the other, this amplitude to E. A (composite) sensitivity matrix is arrived at mapping the variation of M with that of E and used in a (barely regularized) Gauss-Newton algorithm to iteratively recover E. The reconstruction results showing the variation of E are presented. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

A new triarylborane-aza-BODIPY conjugate is reported. The compound consists of two blue emissive dimesitylarylborane moieties and a near-infrared (NIR) emissive aza-BOIDPY core and shows panchromatic absorption spanning approximately 300-800 nm. DFT computational studies suggest limited electronic communication between the individual fluorophore units. Hence, the partial energy transfer from blue fluorophore triarylborane to NIR chromophore aza-BODIPY unit leads to a broad dual-emissive feature covering a large part of visible and NIR region. Furthermore, the broadband emissive compound can act as a selective sensor for fluoride anion as a result of fluorescence quenching response in both visible and NIR spectral regions.

To explore the effect of size reduction to nanoscale on the hole doped Sm0.65Ca0.35MnO3 compound, dc magnetic measurements and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) were done on bulk and nanoparticle samples in the temperature range 10 <= T <= 300 K. Magnetization measurement showed that the bulk sample undergoes a charge ordering transition at 240K and shows a mixed magnetic phase at low temperature. However, the nanosample underwent a ferromagnetic transition at 75 K, and the charge ordered state was destabilized on size reduction down to nanoscale. The low-temperature ferromagnetic component is found to be enhanced in nanoparticles as compared to their bulk counterpart. Interestingly around room temperature, bulk particles show higher magnetization where as at low temperature nanoparticles show higher magnetization. Ferromagnetism in the bulk is due to super exchange where as ferromagnetism in nanoparticles is due to uncompensated spins of the surface layer. Temperature variation of EMR parameters correlates well with the results of magnetic measurements. The magnetic behaviour of the nanoparticles is understood in terms of the core shell scenario. Biomechanical assays offer a good alternative to biochemical assays in diagnosing disease states and assessing the efficacy of drugs. In view of this, we have developed a miniature compliant tool to estimate the bulk stiffness of cells, particularly MCF-7 (Michigan Cancer Foundation) cells whose diameter is 12-15 mu m in suspension. The compliant tool comprises a gripper and a displacement-amplifying compliant mechanism (DaCM), where the former helps in grasping the cell and the latter enables vision-based force-sensing. A DaCM is necessary because the microscope's field of view at the required magnification is not sufficient to simultaneously observe the cell and the movement of a point on the gripper, in order to estimate the force. Therefore, a DaCMis strategically embedded within an existing gripper design leading to a composite compliant mechanism. The DaCM is designed using the kinetoelastostatic map technique to achieve a 42 nN resolution of the force. The gripper, microfabricated with SU-8 using photolithography, is within the footprint of about 10 mm by 10 mm with the smallest feature size of about 5 mu m. The experiments with MCF-7 cells suggest that the bulk stiffness of these is in the range of 8090 mN/m. The details of design, prototyping and testing comprise the paper. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The nonlinear optical response of a current-carrying single molecule coupled to two metal leads and driven by a sequence of impulsive optical pulses with controllable phases and time delays is calculated. Coherent (stimulated, heterodyne) detection of photons and incoherent detection of the optically induced current are compared. Using a diagrammatic Liouville space superoperator formalism, the signals are recast in terms of molecular correlation functions which are then expanded in the many-body molecular states. Two dimensional signals in benzene-1,4-dithiol molecule show cross peaks involving charged states. The correlation between optical and charge current signal is also observed. The demixing behavior, transient morphologies and mechanism of phase separation in PS/PVME blends were greatly altered in the presence of a very low concentration of rod-like particles (multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs). This phenomenon is due to the specific interaction of one of the phases (PVME) with the anisotropic MWNTs, which creates a heterogeneous environment in the blend. This specific interaction alters the chain dynamics in the interfacial region as against the bulk. A comprehensive analysis using isochronal temperature sweep was performed to understand the demixing temperature in the blends. The evolution of phase morphology as a function of time and temperature was assessed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of MWNTs increased the rheological demixing temperature and the spinodal temperature in almost all the compositions. The intriguing transient morphologies were mapped, which varied from nucleation and growth to coalescence-induced viscoelastic phase separation (C-VPS) in PVME-rich blends, to spinodal decomposition in the near-critical compositions, to transient gel-induced VPS (T-VPS) in the PS-rich compositions. Mapping of the morphology development displayed two types of fracture mechanisms: ductile fracture for near-critical compositions and brittle fracture for off-critical composition. The change in the phase separation mechanism in the presence of MWNTs was due to the variation in dynamic asymmetry brought about by these anisotropic particles. All these observations were correlated by POM, SEM and AFM studies. The length of the cooperatively rearranging region (CRR), as evaluated using modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) measurements, was found to be composition-independent. The observed variation of effective glass transition of PVME (low T-g component) on blending with PS (high Tg component) and by the addition of MWNTs accounts for the dynamic heterogeneity introduced by MWNTs in the system.

Recently, a lot of interest has been centred on the optical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which has a similar lattice structure to graphene. Interestingly, h-BN has a wide bandgap and is biocompatible, so it has potential applications in multiphoton bioimaging, if it can exhibit large nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. However, extensive investigation into the NLO properties of h-BN have not been done so far. Here, NLO properties of 2D h-BN nanosheets (BNNS) are reported for the first time, using 1064-nm NIR laser radiation with a pulse duration of 10 ns using the Z-scan technique. The reverse saturable absorption occurs in aqueous colloidal solutions of BNNS with a very large two-photon absorption cross section (sigma(2PA)) of approximate to 57 x 10(-46) cm(4) s(-1) photon(-1). Also, by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, the temperature coefficient of the bandgap (dE(g)/dT) of BNNS is determined to be 5.9 meV K-1. Further defect-induced photoluminescence emission in the UV region is obtained in the 283-303 K temperature range, under excitations of different wavelengths. The present report of large sigma(2PA) combined with stability and biocompatibility could open up new possibilities for the application of BNNS as a potential optical material for multiphoton bioimaging and advanced photonic devices.
