Polycrystalline tin sulfide thin films were prepared by thermal evaporation technique. The films grown at substrate temperature of 300 degrees C had an orthorhombic crystal structure with strong preferred orientation along (111) plane. Electrical resistivity of the deposited films was about 32.5 Omega cm with a direct optical band gap of 1.33 eV. Carrier concentration and mobility of charge carriers estimated from the Hall measurement were found to be 6.24 x 10(15) cm(-3) and 30.7 cm(2)V(-1) s(-1) respectively. Heterojunction solar cells were fabricated in superstrate configuration using thermally evaporated SnS as an absorber layer and CdS, In: CdS as window layer. The resistivity of pure CdS thin film of a thickness of 320 nm was about 1-2 Omega cm and was reduced to 40 x 10(-3) Omega cm upon indium doping. The fabricated solar cells were characterized using solar simulator. The solar cells with indium doped CdS window layer showed improved performance as compared to pure CdS window layer. The best device had a conversion efficiency of 0.4% and a fill factor of 33.5%. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 and Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 have been synthesized by a solution combustion method using alanine and glycine as the fuels, respectively. Both crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with 15 nm average crystallite size. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed Pt ions are in the 2+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O1.97 (alanine) and 4+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O2 (glycine). The rate of CO oxidation occurring over Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 (0.76 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)) is similar to 10, times more than that over Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 at 60 degrees C (0.08 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)). A large shift in 100% hydrocarbons conversion to lower temperature was observed for Pt2+ ion-substituted TiO2 relative 10 that for Pt4+ ion-substituted TiO2. After reoxidation of the reduced compound by H-2 as well as CO, Pt ions are stabilized in mixed valences, 2+ and 4+ states. The role of oxide ion vacancy has been demonstrated by CO oxidation and H-2 + O-2 recombination reactions in the presence and absence of O-2. We analyze the activated lattice oxygens upon substitution of Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions in TiO2, using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with supercells of Ti31Pt1O63, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt2+ ion substitution and Ti31Pt1O64, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt4+ ion substitution in TiO2. We find that the local structure of Pt2+ ion has a distorted square planar geometry and that of Pt4+ ion has an octahedral geometry similar to that of Ti4+ ion in pure TiO2. The change in coordination of Pt2+ ion gives rise to weakly bonded oxygens, and these oxygens are involved in high rates of catalytic reaction. Thus, the high catalytic activity results from synergistic roles of Pt2+ ion and oxide ion vacancy and weakly bonded lattice oxygen.

Fine powders comprising nanocrystallites of barium sodium niobate, Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN) were obtained via a citrate assisted sol-gel route at a much lower temperature than that of the conventional solid-state reaction route. The phase evolution of BNN as a function of temperature was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). DTA data followed by XRD studies confirmed the BNN formation temperature to be around 923 K. The as-synthesized powders heat-treated at 923 K/10 h attained an orthorhombic structure akin to that of the parent BNN phase. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the nanocrystallites are associated with dislocations. The optical band gap was calculated using the Kubelka-Munk function. These nanocrystallites exhibited strong visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature. The PL mechanism was explained by invoking the dielectric confinement effect, defect states and generation of self-trapped excitons.

This article presents the investigation of the coordination behavior of a newly synthesized tricarboxylate ligand, obtained by joining imidazole dicarboxylic acid and 4-carboxybenzyl moieties cbimdaH(3), 1-(4-carboxybenzyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid]. Two novel coordination polymers were obtained through solvothermal reactions under similar conditions namely Sr(cbimdaH)(H2O)](n) (1) and Cd-2(cbimdaH)(2)(H2O)(6)](n)center dot(DMF)(3n)(H2O)(3n) (2), with the ligand behaving as a dianionic tricarboxylate linker. The single crystal X-ray structures show that while 1 forms a 3D coordination polymer, 2 forms a 1D polymer which is further assembled in three dimensions through supramolecular interactions (H-bonding). Complex 1 consists of Sr2+ ions in a distorted dodecahedral coordination geometry, while 2 consists of Cd2+ ions in distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometries. A topology study reveals that 1 has a new topology based on the 5,6-coordinated 3D net architecture. The luminescence properties of the complexes in the solid state and their thermal stabilities were studied.

Ferrocenyl platinum(II) complexes (1-3), viz. Pt(Fc-tpy)Cl]Cl (1), Pt(Fc-tpy)(NPC)]Cl (2, HNPC = N-propargyl carbazole) and Pt(Fc-bpa)Cl]Cl (3), were prepared, characterized and their anti-proliferative properties in visible light in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines have been studied. Pt(Ph-tpy)Cl]Cl (4) was prepared and used as a control. Complexes 1 and 3, structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, show distorted square-planar geometry for the platinum(II) centre. Complexes 1 and 2 having the Fc-tpy ligand showed an intense absorption band at similar to 590 nm. The ferrocenyl complexes are redox active showing the Fc(+)-Fc couple near 0.6 V vs. SCE in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP). Complexes 1-3 showed external binding to calf thymus DNA. Both 1 and 2 showed remarkable photocytotoxicity in HaCaT cell lines giving respective IC50 values of 9.8 and 12.0 mu M in visible light of 400-700 nm with low dark toxicity (IC50 > 60 mu M). Fluorescent imaging studies showed the spread of the complexes throughout the cell localising both in cytoplasm and the nucleus. The ferrocenyl complexes triggered apoptosis on light exposure as evidenced from the Annexin V-FITC/PI and DNA ladder formation assays. Spectral studies revealed the formation of ferrocenium ions upon photo-irradiation generating cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals via a Fenton type mechanism. The results are rationalized from a TDDFT study that shows involvement of ferrocene and the platinum coordinated terpyridine moiety as respective HOMO and LUMO.

The last enzyme in the arginine-biosynthesis pathway, argininosuccinate lyase, from Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been cloned, expressed, purified and crystallized, and preliminary X-ray studies have been carried out on the crystals. The His-tagged tetrameric enzyme with a subunit molecular weight of 50.9 kDa crystallized with two tetramers in the asymmetric unit of the orthorhombic unit cell, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1). Molecular-replacement calculations and self-rotation calculations confirmed the space group and the tetrameric nature of the molecule.

Silver Indium Di-sulfide (AgInS2) thin films are deposited using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique and the effect of substrate temperature (T-s) on film growth is studied by varying the temperature from 250 to 400 degrees C. From the structural analysis, orthorhombic AgInS2 phase is identified with preferential orientation along (002) plane. Further analysis with Raman revealed the coexistence of Cu-Au ordered and chalcopyrite structures in the films. Stoichiometric films are obtained at T-s of 300 degrees C. Above 300 degrees C, the film conductivity changed from p to n-type and the grain size decreased. The band gap of AgInS2 films varied from 1.55 to 1.89 eV and absorption coefficient is found to be >10(4) cm(-1). The films have sheet resistance in the range of 0.05 to 1300 Omega/square Both p and n type films are prepared through this technique without any external doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The ferroelectric system (1-x)PbZrO3-(x)Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 has been investigated as a function of composition, temperature, and electric field by x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, and ferroelectric measurements. Within the solubility limit (x similar to 0.25), the system evolves from an orthorhombic-antiferroelectric to rhombohedral-ferroelectric state through a phase coexistence region. The highest polarization was found not for the composition exhibiting a pure ferroelectric state, but for a composition x = 0.15 exhibiting ferroelectric + antiferroelectric phase coexistence close to the rhombohedral phase boundary. Electric poling of the equilibrium two-phase state led to irreversible enhancement in the rhombohedral phase fraction suggesting that the enhanced polarization is related to the enhanced polarizability of the lattice due to first order criticality as in ferroelectric-ferroelectric morphotropic phase boundary systems. Presented are new measurements of the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of rhombohedral LaCrO3 from component oxides La2O3 and Cr2O3 in the temperature range from 875 to 1175K, using a bielectrolyte solid-state cell incorporating single crystal CaF2 and composition-graded solid electrolyte (LaF3)(y)(CaF2)(1-y) (y=0-0.32). The results can be represented analytically as Delta G(f(ox))(o) (+/- 2270)/Jmol(-1)=-72329+4.932 (T/K). The measurements were undertaken to resolve serious discrepancies in the data reported in the literature. A critical analysis of previous electrochemical measurements indicates several deficiencies that have been rectified in this study. The enthalpy of formation obtained in this study is consistent with calorimetric data. The standard enthalpy of formation of orthorhombic LaCrO3 from elements at 298.15K computed from the results of this study is Delta H-f(298.15)(o)/kJmol(-1)=-1536.2 (+/- 7). The standard entropy of orthorhombic LaCrO3 at 298.15K is estimated as 99.0 (+/- 4.5)J(molK)(-1).

Thermoluminescence properties of YAlO3:Dy3+ nanophosphor prepared by a low temperature solution combustion (SC) method using oxalyl dihydrazide as a fuel were studied and the results were compared to bulk phosphor prepared by solid state (SS) synthesis. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the orthorhombic phase of SC and SS methods. Rietveld refinement was used to estimate the cell parameters of undoped and Dy3+ doped YAlO3. Scanning electron micrographs reveal dumbbell shape particles. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of YAlO3:Dy3+ nanophosphors were studied at 293 K, 77 K and 10 K. Thermoluminescence responses of SC and SS prepared phosphor were studied using gamma irradiation in the dose range 0.1-6 kGy at a warming rate of 1 degrees C s (1) at room temperature (RT). The optimized concentrations of Dy3+ ions in YAlO3 was found to be 3 mol%. The trapping parameters (i. e. activation energy, frequency factor, order of kinetic) of all the individual peaks of the glow curves have been analysed by using Chen's method. The low fading and linear response in the wide range (0.1-1 kGy) suggests the possibility of usage of SC prepared phosphor in dosimeter applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Using isothermal equilibration, phase relations are established in the system Sm-Rh-O at 1273 K. SmRhO3 with GdFeO3-type perovskite structure is found to be the only ternary phase. Solid-state electrochemical cells, containing calcia-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte, are used to measure the thermodynamic properties of SmRhO3 formed from their binary component oxides Rh2O3 (ortho) and Sm2O3 (C-type and B-type) in two different temperature ranges. Results suggest that C-type Sm2O3 with cubic structure transforms to B-type Sm2O3 with monoclinic structure at 1110 K. The standard Gibbs energy of transformation is . Standard Gibbs energy of formation of SmRhO3 from binary component oxides Rh2O3 and Sm2O3 with B-type rare earth oxide structure can be expressed as . The decomposition temperature of SmRhO3 estimated from the extrapolation of electrochemical data is 1665 (+/- 2) K in air and 1773 (+/- 3) K in pure oxygen. Temperature-composition diagrams at constant oxygen pressures are constructed for the system Sm-Rh-O. Employing the thermodynamic data for SmRhO3 from emf measurement and auxiliary data for other phases from the literature, oxygen potential-composition phase diagram and 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Sm-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed.

Glucose-appended photocytotoxic iron(III) complexes of a tridentate Schiff base phenolate ligand Fe(bpyag) (L)] (NO3) (1-3), where bpyag is N,N-bis(2- pyridylmethyl)-2-aminoethyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and H2L is 3-(2-hydroxyphenylimino)-1-phenylbutan-1-one (H(2)phap) in 1, 3-(2-hydroxyphenylimino)-9-anthrylbutan-1-one (H(2)anap) 2, and 3- (2-hydroxyphenylimino)-1-pyrenylbutan-1-one (H(2)pyap) in 3, were synthesized and characterized. The complex Fe(dpma)(anapn(NO3) (4), having bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)benzylamine (dpma), in which the glucose moiety of bpyag is substituted by a phenyl group, was used as a control, and the complex Fe(dpma)(anap)](PF6) (4a) was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structure shows a FeN4O2 core in a distorted octahedral geometry. The high-spin iron(III) complexes with magnetic moment value of similar to 5.9 mu(B) showed a low-energy phenolate-to-Fe(III) charge-transfer (CT) absorption band as a shoulder near 500 nm with a tail extending to 700 nm and an irreversible Fe(III)-Fe(II) redox couple near -0.6 V versus saturated calomel electrode. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA and showed photocleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in red (647 nm) and green (532 nm) light. Complexes 2 and 3 displayed significant photocytotoxicity in red light, with an IC50 value of similar to 20 mu M in HeLa and HaCaT cells, and no significant toxicity in dark. The cell death is via an apoptotic pathway, by generation of reactive oxygen species. Preferential internalization of the carbohydrate-appended complexes 2 and 3 was evidenced in HeLa cells as compared to the control complex 4. A 5-fold increase in the cellular uptake was observed for the active complexes in HeLa cells. The photophysical properties of the complexes are rationalized from the density functional theory calculations.

We report results of the magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La-0.82 Ca-0.18 MnO3. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that magnetically (and in every other sense), this is a single- phase system with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of around 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on measured dynamical properties, we propose that this quasi-long-ranged ferromagnetic phase, and the associated superspin glass behavior, is the true magnetic state of the system, rather than being a macroscopic mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, as often suggested. Our results provide an understanding of the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal via this ferromagnetic state as a function of x in La1-xCaxMnO3, in terms of the possible formation of magnetic polarons.

We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at T-C1 similar to 270 K and T-C2 similar to 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (T-sg similar to 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly around 270 K which is a signature of magneto-dielectric effect. Temperature-dependent Raman studies between the temperature range 12-300 K in a wide spectral range from 220 cm(-1) to 1530 cm(-1) reveal a strong renormalization of the first as well as second-order Raman modes associated with the (Ni/Mn)O-6 octahedra near T-C1 implying a strong spin-phonon coupling. In addition, an anomaly is seen in the vicinity of spin-glass transition temperature in the temperature dependence of the frequency of the anti-symmetric stretching vibration of the octahedra. Pyridoxal kinase (PdxK; EC 2.7.1.35) belongs to the phosphotransferase family of enzymes and catalyzes the conversion of the three active forms of vitamin B-6, pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine, to their phosphorylated forms and thereby plays a key role in pyridoxal 5 `-phosphate salvage. In the present study, pyridoxal kinase from Salmonella typhimurium was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified using Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and crystallized. X-ray diffraction data were collected to 2.6 angstrom resolution at 100 K. The crystal belonged to the primitive orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unitcell parameters a = 65.11, b = 72.89, c = 107.52 angstrom. The data quality obtained by routine processing was poor owing to the presence of strong diffraction rings caused by a polycrystalline material of an unknown small molecule in all oscillation images. Excluding the reflections close to powder/polycrystalline rings provided data of sufficient quality for structure determination. A preliminary structure solution has been obtained by molecular replacement with the Phaser program in the CCP4 suite using E. coli pyridoxal kinase (PDB entry 2ddm) as the phasing model. Further refinement and analysis of the structure are likely to provide valuable insights into catalysis by pyridoxal kinases.
