Cocrystallization experiments of 2-methylresorcinol with several N-bases were performed to identify selective and preferred crystallization routes in relevant structural landscapes. These preferred supramolecular synthon-based crystallization routes were further enhanced by using carefully chosen coformer combinations to synthesize stoichiometric ternary solids. The exercise consists of modular selection and amplification of supramolecular synthons from single through two-to three-component molecular solids, and is equivalent to solid state combinatorial synthesis.

A new monoclinic polymorph, form II (P2(1)/c, Z = 4), has been isolated for 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid (DMCA). Its solid-state 2 + 2 photoreaction to the corresponding alpha-truxillic acid is different from that of the first polymorph, the triclinic form I (P (1) over bar, Z = 4) that was reported in 1984. The crystal structures of the two forms are rather different. The two polymorphs also exhibit different photomechanical properties. Form I exhibits photosalient behavior but this effect is absent in form II. These properties can be explained on the basis of the crystal packing in the two forms. The nanoindentation technique is used to shed further insights into these structure-property relationships. A faster photoreaction in form I and a higher yield in form II are rationalized on the basis of the mechanical properties of the individual crystal forms. It is suggested that both Schmidt-type and Kaupp-type topochemistry are applicable for the solid-state trans-cinnamic acid photodimerization reaction. Form I of DMCA is more plastic and seems to react under Kaupp-type conditions with maximum molecular movements. Form II is more brittle, and its interlocked structure seems to favor Schmidt-type topochemistry with minimum molecular movement.

Modular chiral I3-organochalcogeno amines, ArYCH2CH(R)NH2 (4a-4g) where R = Me, Bz, Ph; and ArY = PhS, BzSe and 4-MeOC6H4Te respectively have been synthesized and characterized. Compounds 4a-4g were synthesized (Method II) from chiral aminoalkyl 13-methanesulfonate hydrochlorides, MsOCH2CH(R)NH3+ center dot Cl- (2a-2c) through nucleophilic displacement of MsO- with organochalcogenolate (ArY-). In another attempt (Method I) chiral beta-organotelluro amines (4a-4c) were prepared by deprotection of chiral N-boc I3-organotelluro amides, 4-MeOC6H4TeCH2CH(R)NH-Boc (3a-3c), which in turn, 13,-,1 were made from chiral N-boc 13-methanesulfonate amides (la-lc) and ArTeNa. 1H, and FTIR spectra of all the compounds (3a-3c and 4a-4g) were characteristic. The composition of 3a-3c was determined by elemental analysis. The a]TD values of 3b-3c and 4a-4g were determined. The single crystal structures of (S)-2b and (R)-2c were determined by X-Ray diffraction studies. Both (S)-2b and (R)2c were crystallized in orthorhombic system and the Flack parameter x was found 0.08(12) and 0.00(2) respectively. The crystal of (S)-2b contain two asymmetric units with gauche (A) and staggered (B) conformations. There are NH Cl-, NH-O and CH-O intra and intermolecular secondary interactions in (S)-2b and (R)-2c resulting in supramolecular structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure of a tripeptide Boc-Leu-Val-Ac(12)c-OMe (1) is determined, which incorporates a bulky 1-aminocyclododecane-1-carboxylic acid (Ac(12)c) side chain. The peptide adopts a semi-extended backbone conformation for Leu and Val residues, while the backbone torsion angles of the C-,C--dialkylated residue Ac(12)c are in the helical region of the Ramachandran map. The molecular packing of 1 revealed a unique supramolecular twisted parallel -sheet coiling into a helical architecture in crystals, with the bulky hydrophobic Ac(12)c side chains projecting outward the helical column. This arrangement resembles the packing of peptide helices in crystal structures. Although short oligopeptides often assemble as parallel or anti-parallel -sheet in crystals, twisted or helical -sheet formation has been observed in a few examples of dipeptide crystal structures. Peptide 1 presents the first example of a tripeptide showing twisted -sheet assembly in crystals. Copyright (c) 2016 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Pt-modified beta-NiAl bond coats are applied over the superalloys for oxidation protection in jet engine applications. However, as shown in this study, it also enhances the growth of the interdiffusion zone developed between the bond coat and the superalloy along with brittle precipitates. Location of the Kirkendall plane indicates that a precipitate free sublayer grows from the bond coat, whereas another sublayer grows from the superalloy containing very high volume fraction of precipitates. With increasing Pt content, thickness of both the sublayers increases because of an increase in diffusion rates of the components. Quantitative electron probe microanalysis indicates high concentration of refractory components in the precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy shows that Rene N5 superalloy produces TCP phases mu and P, whereas CMSX-4 superalloy produces mu and sigma in the interdiffusion zone. With increasing Pt content in the bond coat, the average size of the precipitates decreases when coupled with Rene N5. Precipitates become much finer when the same bond coats are coupled with CMSX-4. The derivation of a quasi-geostrophic system from the rotating shallow-water equations on a midlatitude -plane coupled with moisture is presented. Condensation is prescribed to occur whenever the moisture at a point exceeds a prescribed saturation value. It is seen that a slow condensation time-scale is required to obtain a consistent set of equations at leading order. Further, since the advecting wind fields are geostrophic, changes in moisture (and hence precipitation) occur only via non-divergent mechanisms. Following observations, a saturation profile with gradients in the zonal and meridional directions is prescribed. A purely meridional gradient has the effect of slowing down the dry Rossby waves, through a reduction in the equivalent gradient' of the background potential vorticity. A large-scale unstable moist mode results on the inclusion of a zonal gradient by itself, or in conjunction with a meridional moisture gradient. For gradients that are are representative of the atmosphere, the most unstable moist mode propagates zonally in the direction of increasing moisture, matures over an intraseasonal time-scale and has small phase speed.

A discussion has been provided for the comments raised by the discusser (Clausen, 2015)1] on the article recently published by the authors (Chakraborty and Kumar, 2015). The effect of exponent alpha for values of GSI approximately smaller than 30 becomes more critical. On the other hand, for greater values of GSI, the results obtained by the authors earlier remain primarily independent of alpha and can be easily used. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A synthetic strategy is described for the co-crystallization of four-and five-component molecular crystals, based on the fact that if any particular chemical constituent of a lower cocrystal is found in two different structural environments, these differences may be exploited to increase the number of components in the solid. 2-Methylresorcinol and tetramethylpyrazine are basic template molecules that allow for further supramolecular homologation. Ten stoichiometric quaternary cocrystals and one quintinary cocrystal with some solid solution character are reported. Cocrystals that do not lend themselves to such homologation are termed synthetic dead ends.

This paper reveals an early quasi-saturation (QS) effect attributed to the geometrical parameters in shallow trench isolation-type drain-extended MOS (STI-DeMOS) transistors in advanced CMOS technologies. The quasi-saturation effect leads to serious g(m) reduction in STI-DeMOS. This paper investigates the nonlinear resistive behavior of the drain-extended region and its impact on the particular behavior of the STI-DeMOS transistor. In difference to vertical DMOS or lateral DMOS structures, STI-DeMOS exhibits three distinct regions of the drain extension. A complete understanding of the physics in these regions and their impact on the QS behavior are developed in this paper. An optimization strategy is shown for an improved g(m) device in a state-of-the-art 28-nm CMOS technology node.
