The nontrivial electronic topology of a topological insulator is thus far known to display signatures in a robust metallic state at the surface. Here, we establish vibrational anomalies in Raman spectra of the bulk that signify changes in electronic topology: an E-g(2) phonon softens unusually and its linewidth exhibits an asymmetric peak at the pressure induced electronic topological transition (ETT) in Sb2Se3 crystal. Our first-principles calculations confirm the electronic transition from band to topological insulating state with reversal of parity of electronic bands passing through a metallic state at the ETT, but do not capture the phonon anomalies which involve breakdown of adiabatic approximation due to strongly coupled dynamics of phonons and electrons. Treating this within a four-band model of topological insulators, we elucidate how nonadiabatic renormalization of phonons constitutes readily measurable bulk signatures of an ETT, which will facilitate efforts to develop topological insulators by modifying a band insulator. In this paper, we study the Fowler-Nordheim field emission (FNFE) from carbon nanotubes on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law by considering the fact that the intense electric field needed for FNFE changes the band structure in a fundamental way. It has been found that the field emitted current increases with increasing electric field in oscillatory manner due to the appearance of van Hove singularities and exhibits spikes for particular values of the electric field where the singularity occurs. The numerical values of the field emitted current in all the cases vary widely and the determined by the chiral indices and the diameter in the respective cases. The results of this paper find three applications in the fields of nanoscience and technology.

alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural, magnetic and luminescence properties were studied. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern of alpha-Fe2O3 exhibits pure rhombohedral structure. SEM micrographs reveal the dumbbell shaped particles. The EPR spectrum shows an intense resonance signal at g approximate to 5.61 corresponding to isolated Fe3+ ions situated in axially distorted sites, whereas the g approximate to 2.30 is due to Fe3+ ions coupled by exchange interaction. Raman studies show A(1g) (225 cm(-1)) and E-g (293 and 409 cm(-1)) phonon modes. The absorption at 300 nm results from the ligand to metal charge transfer transitions whereas the 540 nm peak is mainly due to the (6)A(1) + (6)A(1) —> T-4(1)(4G) + T-4(1)(4G) excitation of an Fe3+-Fe3+ pair. A prominent TL glow peak was observed at 140 C at heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were evaluated and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abrus precatorius is highly regarded as a universal panacea in the herbal medicine with diverse pharmacological activity spectra. This experimental study on the mechanism of the anticancer activity of A. precatorius leaf extracts, may offer new evidence for A. precatorius in the treatment of breast cancer in clinical practice. Cell death was determined by using MTT assay. Further analyses were carried out by doing DNA laddering, PARP cleavage, FACS, semi-quantitative RT-PCR and detection of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) by DCFDA assay. A. precatorius showed very striking inhibition on MDA-MB-231 cells. MTT assay showed more than 75 % inhibition of the cells and treated cells indicated visible laddering pattern with thick compact band. PARP cleavage produced 89 kDa cleavage product which was associated with apoptosis. Flow cytometer exhibited a sub-G0/G1 peak as an indicative of apoptosis. mRNA expression level of apoptosis-related genes p21 and p53 was markedly increased in cells treated with the extract as compared to control. The up-regulation of p21 and p53 may be the molecular mechanisms by which A. precatorius extract which induces apoptosis. An increase in the concentration of A. precatorius extract does not generate ROS, instead it reduces ROS formation in MDA-MB-231 cells, as evident from the shift in fluorescence below untreated control. This is the first report showing that A. precatorius leaf extract exhibits a growth inhibitory effect by induction of apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells. Our results contribute towards validation of the A. precatorius extract as a potentially effective chemopreventive or therapeutic agent against breast cancer.

In solid-state mechanochromic luminescence (ML) materials, it remains a challenge to establish the origin of fluorescence color changes upon mechanical action and to determine why only some fluorophores exhibit ML behavior. The study of mechanical properties by nanoindentation, followed by ML experiments on green- and cyan-emitting polymorphs of difluoroboron avobenzone reveals that upon smearing, the plastically deformable cyan form shows a prominent color change to yellow, while in the harder green form the redshifted emission is barely detectable. Crystal structure analysis reveals the presence of slip planes in the softer cyan form that can facilitate the formation of recoverable and low energy defects in the structure. Hence, the cyan form exhibits prominent and reversible ML behavior. This suggests a potential design strategy for efficient ML materials.

Diffusion of pentane isomers in zeolites NaX has been investigated using pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) and molecular dynamics (MD) techniques respectively. Temperature and concentration dependence of diffusivities have been studied. The diffusivities obtained from NMR are roughly an order of magnitude smaller than those obtained from MD. The dependence of diffusivity on loading at high temperatures exhibits a type I behavior according to the classification of Karger and Pfeifer 1]. NMR diffusivities of the isomers exhibit the order D(n-pentane) > D(isopentane) > D(neopentane). The results from MD suggest that the diffusivities of the isomers follow the order D(n-pentane) < D(isopentane) < D(neopentane). The activation energies from NMR show E-a(n-pentane) < E-a(isopentane) < E-a(neopentane) whereas those from MD suggest the order E-a(n-pentane) > (isopentane) > E-a(neopentane). The latter follows the predictions of levitation effect whereas those of NMR appears to be due to the presence of defects in the zeolite crystals. The differences between diffusivities estimated by NMR and MD are attributed to the longer time and length scales sampled by the NMR technique, as compared to MD. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. The fracture of eutectic Si particles dictates the fracture characteristics of Al-Si based cast alloys. The morphology of these particles is found to play an important role in fracture initiation. In the current study, the effects of strain rate, temperature, strain, and heat treatment on Si particle fracture under compression were investigated. Strain rates ranging from 3 x 10(-4)/s to 10(2)/s and three temperatures RT, 373 K, and 473 K (100 A degrees C and 200 A degrees C) are considered in this study. It is found that the Si particle fracture shows a small increase with increase in strain rate and decreases with increase in temperature at 10 pct strain. The flow stress at 10 pct strain exhibits the trend similar to particle fracture with strain rate and temperature. Particle fracture also increases with increase in strain. Large and elongated particles show a greater tendency for cracking. Most fracture occurs on particles oriented nearly perpendicular to the loading axis, and the cracks are found to occur almost parallel to the loading axis. At any strain rate, temperature, and strain, the Si particle fracture is greater for the heat-treated condition than for the non-heat-treated condition because of higher flow stress in the heat-treated condition. In addition to Si particle fracture, elongated Fe-rich intermetallic particles are also seen to fracture. These particles have specific crystallographic orientations and fracture along their major axis with the cleavage planes for their fracture being (100). Fracture of these particles might also play a role in the overall fracture behavior of this alloy since these particles cleave along their major axis leading to cracks longer than 200 mu m.

This paper reports an experimental investigation of oscillating temperature field beneath a single isolated nucleation site using a non-invasive TLC (thermochromic liquid crystal) based thermography technique. Empirical correlations are presented to demonstrate the influence of system pressure and wall heat flux on different ebullition characteristics in the nucleate pool boiling regime of refrigerant R-134a. TLC transient response and two-phase flow structure are captured using synchronized, high resolution imaging. It is observed that the area of influence of nucleation site exhibits a two-part distinct transient behavior during the bubble growth period and broadens to a maximum of 1.57 times the bubble diameter at the instant of bubble departure. This is accompanied by a sharp fall of 2.5 degrees C in the local excess temperature at the nucleation site, which results in momentary augmentation (similar to 40%) in the local heat transfer coefficient at the nucleation origin. The enhanced heat transfer rate observed during the bubble peel-off event is primarily due to transient micro-convection in the wake of the retreating bubble. Further, the results indicate that a slight increase in system pressure from 813.6 to 882.5 kPa has no considerable effect on either the wall superheat or the overall heat transfer coefficient and ebullition frequency. In addition, correlations have been obtained for bubble Reynolds number, Jackob number and the dimensionless bubble generation frequency in terms of modified boiling number.

A series of fluoranthene derivatives (F1-F5) varied with nature and type of substituents were synthesized via Diels-Alder reaction followed by in situ decarbonylation. The solid state structures have been established through single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The presence of extended conjugation and having two alkyloxy chains on phenyl rings induces flexibility to orient opposite to each other and interacts with another fluoranthene unit with weak pi-pi interactions and show unique supramolecular arrangements. The envisaged photophysical and DFT studies demonstrated that HOMO-LUMO levels were effectively tuned by different substituents with an optical band gap from 3.44 to 3.88 eV provoked to examine as sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). The sensitivity toward the detection of NACs was evaluated through fluorescence quenching in solution (aqueous and non-aqueous) and solid state (vapor and contact mode). Fluorescence studies demonstrated that electron transfer occurs from the electron rich fluoranthene fluorophores to the electron deficient NACs by the dominant static quenching mechanism and the quenching process is reversible. It was found that the detection sensitivity increases with extent of conjugation on fluoranthene unit. The contact mode approach using thin layer silica chromatographic plates exhibits a femtogram (1.15 fg/cm(2)) detection limit for trinitrotoluene (TNT) and picric acid (PA), while the solution state fluorescence quenching shows for PA detection at the 2-20 ppb level. The sensing performance of fluoranthene thin films to NACs in aqueous solution reveals that fluorophores are highly selective towards the detection of PA. The smart performances of thin film fluorophores with high photostability have great advantage than those of conjugated polymers with superior sensitive detection of PA in groundwater.

Calcium titanate (CaTiO3) nanophosphors were synthesized by three different routes namely solution combustion (SC), modified solid-state reaction (MSS) and solid-state (SS) methods. Rietveld refinement studies revealed the presence of an orthorhombic structure with traces of CaCO3. The crystallite sizes were found to be in the 43-45 nm range. TEM studies also confirm the nano size with well crystalline nature. EPR spectrum for SS method exhibits a broad resonance signal at g = 2.027 is attributed to TiO6](9-) center, whereas in MSS sample the resonance signals are attributed to surface electron and hole trapping sites. The TL behavior has been investigated for the first time using gamma-irradiation. TL glow peak at 169 degrees C were recorded in CaTiO3 prepared by SC, MSS and SS methods. The trapping parameters such as activation energy (E) and order of kinetics (b) were estimated using peak shape method and results are discussed in detail. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae RAD50, MRE11, and XRS2 genes are essential for telomere length maintenance, cell cycle checkpoint signaling, meiotic recombination, and DNA double-stranded break (DSB) repair via nonhomologous end joining and homologous recombination. The DSB repair pathways that draw upon Mre11-Rad50-Xrs2 subunits are complex, so their mechanistic features remain poorly understood. Moreover, the molecular basis of DSB end resection in yeast mre11-nuclease deficient mutants and Mre11 nuclease-independent activation of ATM in mammals remains unknown and adds a new dimension to many unanswered questions about the mechanism of DSB repair. Here, we demonstrate that S. cerevisiae Mre11 (ScMre11) exhibits higher binding affinity for single-over double-stranded DNA and intermediates of recombination and repair and catalyzes robust unwinding of substrates possessing a 3' single-stranded DNA overhang but not of 5' overhangs or blunt-ended DNA fragments. Additional evidence disclosed that ScMre11 nuclease activity is dispensable for its DNA binding and unwinding activity, thus uncovering the molecular basis underlying DSB end processing in mre11 nuclease deficient mutants. Significantly, Rad50, Xrs2, and Sae2 potentiate the DNA unwinding activity of Mre11, thus underscoring functional interaction among the components of DSB end repair machinery. Our results also show that ScMre11 by itself binds to DSB ends, then promotes end bridging of duplex DNA, and directly interacts with Sae2. We discuss the implications of these results in the context of an alternative mechanism for DSB end processing and the generation of single-stranded DNA for DNA repair and homologous recombination.

The paper reports effect of small ternary addition of In on the microstructure, mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of a near eutectic suction cast Nb-19.1 at-%Si-1.5 at-%In alloy. The observed microstructure consists of a combination of two kinds of lamellar structure. They are metal-intermetallic combinations of Nb-ss-beta-Nb5Si3 and Nb-ss-alpha-Nb5Si3 respectively having 40-60 nm lamellar spacings. The alloy gives compressive strength of 3 GPa and engineering strain of similar to 3% at room temperature. The composite structure also exhibits a large improvement in oxidation resistance at high temperature (1000 degrees C).

This work is a continuation of our efforts to quantify the irregular scalar stress signals from the Ananthakrishna model for the Portevin-Le Chatelier instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. Stress related to the spatial average of the dislocation activity is a dynamical variable that also determines the time evolution of dislocation densities. We carry out detailed investigations on the nature of spatiotemporal patterns of the model realized in the form of different types of dislocation bands seen in the entire instability domain and establish their connection to the nature of stress serrations. We then characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of the model equations by computing the Lyapunov dimension as a function of the drive parameter. The latter scales with the system size only for low strain rates, where isolated dislocation bands are seen, and at high strain rates, where fully propagating bands are seen. At intermediate applied strain rates corresponding to the partially propagating bands, the Lyapunov dimension exhibits two distinct slopes, one for small system sizes and another for large. This feature is rationalized by demonstrating that the spatiotemporal patterns for small system sizes are altered from the partially propagating band types to isolated burst type. This in turn allows us to reconfirm that low-dimensional chaos is projected from the stress signals as long as there is a one-to-one correspondence between the bursts of dislocation bands and the stress drops. We then show that the stress signals in the regime of partially to fully propagative bands have features of extensive chaos by calculating the correlation dimension density. We also show that the correlation dimension density also depends on the system size. A number of issues related to the system size dependence of the Lyapunov dimension density and the correlation dimension density are discussed.

The role of crystallite size and clustering in influencing the stability of the structures of a large tetragonality ferroelectric system 0.6BiFeO(3)-0.4PbTiO(3) was investigated. The system exhibits cubic phase for a crystallite size similar to 25 nm, three times larger than the critical size reported for one of its end member PbTiO3. With increased degree of clustering for the same average crystallite size, partial stabilization of the ferroelectric tetragonal phase takes place. The results suggest that clustering helps in reducing the depolarization energy without the need for increasing the crystallite size of free particles.

High resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, dielectric and Raman scattering study of a scheelite compound Li0.5Ce0.5MoO4 (LCM) revealed that it transforms to a self similar structure above 400 degrees C. The thermally induced isostructural phase transition (IPT), a phenomenon which has rarely been reported in the literature, is preceded by partial softening of the zone centre phonons followed by their hardening above the IPT transition temperature. The high temperature isostructural phase, which exhibits expanded lattice parameters and cell volume, nucleates and grows in the low temperature matrix over a very wide temperature range. Both the phases show nearly identical thermal expansion suggesting similarities in symmetry, unaltered coordination environments around the atoms across the transition.
