Single crystals of lithium D-isoascorbate monohydrate (LDAM), (C6H7O6Li center dot H2O), are grown by a solution growth method. The crystal structure of LDAM is solved using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The space group is orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) with four formula units per unit cell and lattice parameters a = 7.7836(3) angstrom, b = 8.7456(3) angstrom, and c = 11.0368(4) angstrom. Solubility of the material in water is determined thermogravimetrically and found to have a positive temperature coefficient of solubility. Large optical quality single crystals are subsequently grown from aqueous solution by a slow cooling method. The crystal has a bulky prismatic habit and among the prominent faces the c face appears as the only principal morphological face. The crystal exhibits a (010) cleavage. Dielectric spectroscopy reveals a nearly Debye type Cole-Cole behavior with anisotropy in relaxation. Optical transmission range is found to be from 300 to 1400 nm. The principal refractive indices of this biaxial crystal, measured using Brewster's angle method, at wavelengths 405, 543, and 632.8 nm, show high dispersion. The crystal is negative biaxial with 2V(z) = 107.8 degrees (405 nm) and belongs to the Hobden class 3. Theoretically generated type 1 and type 2 second order phase matching curves match very well with the experimental results. The second-order nonlinear coefficient d(14) was determined to be 7 x 10(-13) m/V. For the optimum phase matching direction (type 2), the second-order effective nonlinear coefficient and the walk off angle are determined to be 0.84 times d(14) and 3.5 degrees respectively. The crystal possesses high multiple surface damage thresholds of 18 GW/cm(2) and 8 GW/cm(2) at laser wavelengths 1064 and 532 nm, respectively.

We address the problem of phase retrieval, which is frequently encountered in optical imaging. The measured quantity is the magnitude of the Fourier spectrum of a function (in optics, the function is also referred to as an object). The goal is to recover the object based on the magnitude measurements. In doing so, the standard assumptions are that the object is compactly supported and positive. In this paper, we consider objects that admit a sparse representation in some orthonormal basis. We develop a variant of the Fienup algorithm to incorporate the condition of sparsity and to successively estimate and refine the phase starting from the magnitude measurements. We show that the proposed iterative algorithm possesses Cauchy convergence properties. As far as the modality is concerned, we work with measurements obtained using a frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography experimental setup. The experimental results on real measured data show that the proposed technique exhibits good reconstruction performance even with fewer coefficients taken into account for reconstruction. It also suppresses the autocorrelation artifacts to a significant extent since it estimates the phase accurately.

We report the synthesis of trigonal and tetragonal phase GeO2 films/microrods from a Ge wafer/powder by thermal oxidation. Both trigonal and tetragonal GeO2 exhibit excitation-dependent luminescence. Trigonal GeO2 exhibits strong green luminescence while tetragonal GeO2 exhibits strong blue luminescence when excited with ultra-violet light. Yellow-red luminescence is observed when both the phases are excited with green light. The emission wavelength varies almost linearly with the excitation wavelength both for trigonal and tetragonal GeO2. The variation is significant in the case of tetragonal GeO2, indicating a potential wavelength converter material.

The high efficiency of fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles makes them a potentially viable option for future transportation. Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are most promising among various fuel cells for electric traction due to their quick start-up and low-temperature operation. In recent years, the performance of PEFCs has reached the acceptable level both for automotive and stationary applications and efforts are now being expended in increasing their durability, which remains a major concern in their commercialization. To make PEFCs meet automotive targets an understanding of the factors affecting the stability of carbon support and platinum catalyst is critical. Alloying platinum (Pt) with first-row transition metals such as cobalt (Co) is reported to facilitate both higher degree of crystallinity and enhanced activity in relation to pristine Pt. But a major challenge for the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in PEFCs is to improve the stability of these binary catalysts. Dissolution of the non-precious metal in the acidic environment could alleviate the activity of the catalysts and hence cell performance. The use of graphitic carbon as cathode-catalyst support enhances the long-term stability of Pt and its alloys in relation to non-graphitic carbon as the former exhibits higher resistance to carbon corrosion in relation to the latter in PEFC cathodes during accelerated-stress test (AST). Changes in electrochemical surface area (ESA), cell performance and charge-transfer resistance are monitored during AST through cyclic voltammetry, cell polarization and impedance measurements, respectively. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy reflect that graphitic carbon-support resists carbon corrosion and helps mitigating aggregation of Pt and Pt3Co catalyst particles. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a few phenolate-based ligands bearing tert- amino substituent and their Zn(II) and Cu(II) metal complexes. Three mono/binuclear Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes Zn(L1)(H2O)].CH3OH.H2O (1) (H (2) L1 = 6,6(')-(((2-dimethylamino)ethylazanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2, 4-dimethylphenol), Zn-2(L2)(2)] (2) (H (2) L2 = 2,2(')-(((2-dimethylamino)ethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4- methylphenol) and Cu-2(L3)(2).CH2 Cl-2] (3) (H (2) L3 = (6,6(')-(((2-(diethylamino)ethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene)) bis(methylene))bis(2,4-dimethylphenol) were synthesized by using three symmetrical tetradendate ligands containing N2O2 donor sites. These complexes are characterized by a variety of techniques including; elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, H-1, C-13 NMR spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray analysis. The new complexes have been tested for the phosphotriesterase (PTE) activity with the help of P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The P-31 NMR studies show that mononuclear complex Zn(L1)(H2O)].CH3OH.H2O (1) can hydrolyse the phosphotriester i.e., p-nitrophenyl diphenylphosphate (PNPDPP), more efficiently than the binuclear complexes Zn-2(L2)(2)] (2) and Cu-2(L3)(2).CH2Cl2] (3). The mononuclear Zn(II) complex (1) having one coordinated water molecule exhibits significant PTE activity which may be due to the generation of a Zn(II)-bound hydroxide ion during the hydrolysis reactions in CHES buffer at pH 9.0.

Four dinuclear bis(mu-Cl) bridged copper(II) complexes, Cu-2(mu-Cl)(2)(L-X)(2)](ClO4)(2) (L-X = N,N-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)-methyl]benzylamine with X = H(1), OMe(2), Me(3) and Cl(4)), have been synthesized and characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. In these complexes, each copper(II) center is penta-coordinated with square-pyramidal geometry. In addition to the tridentate L-X ligand, a chloride ion occupies the last position of the square plane. This chloride ion is also bonded to the neighboring Cu(II) site in its axial position forming an SP-I dinuclear Cu(II) unit that exhibits small intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions and supported by DFT calculations. The complexes 1-3 exhibit methylmonooxygenase (pMMO) behaviour and oxidise 4-tert-butylcatechol (4-TBCH2) with molecular oxygen in MeOH or MeCN to 4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (4-TBQ), 5-methoxy-4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (5-MeO-4-TBQ) as the major products along with 6,6'-Bu-t-biphenyl-3,4,3',4'-tetraol and others as minor products. These are further confirmed by ESI- and FAB-mass analyses. A tentative catalytic cycle has been framed based on the mass spectral analysis of the products and DFT calculations on individual intermediates that are energetically feasible.

A combination of chemical and thermal annealing techniques has been employed to synthesize a rarely reported nanocup structure of Mn doped ZnO with good yield. Nanocup structures are obtained by thermally annealing the powder samples consisting of nanosheets, synthesized chemically at room temperature, isochronally in a furnace at 200-500 degrees C temperature range for 2 h. Strong excitonic absorption in the UV and photoluminescence (PL) emission in UV-visible regions are observed in all the samples at room temperature. The sample obtained at 300 degrees C annealing temperature exhibits strong PL emission in the UV due to near-band-edge emission along with very week defect related emissions in the visible regions. The synthesized samples have been found to be exhibiting stable optical properties for 10 months which proved the unique feature of the presented technique of synthesis of nanocup structures. A mixed-metal metal-organic framework (MOF) compound NiMn2{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)], I, is prepared hydrothermally by replacing one of the octahedral Mn2+ ions in Mn-3{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)] by Ni2+ ions. Magnetic studies on I suggest antiferromagnetic interactions with weak canted antiferromagnetism below 8 K. On heating in flowing air I transforms to NiMn2O4 spinel at low temperature (T < 400 degrees C). The thermal decomposition of I at different temperatures results in NiMn2O4 with particle sizes in the nano regime. The nanoparticle nature of NiMn2O4 was confirmed using PXRD and TEM studies. Magnetic studies on the nanoparticles of NiMn2O4 indicate ferrimagnetism. The transition temperature of NiMn2O4 nanoparticles exhibits a direct correlation with the particle size. This study highlights the usefulness of MOF compound as a single-source precursor for the preparation of important ceramic oxides with better control on the stoichiometry and particle size.

Knowledge about program worst case execution time (WCET) is essential in validating real-time systems and helps in effective scheduling. One popular approach used in industry is to measure execution time of program components on the target architecture and combine them using static analysis of the program. Measurements need to be taken in the least intrusive way in order to avoid affecting accuracy of estimated WCET. Several programs exhibit phase behavior, wherein program dynamic execution is observed to be composed of phases. Each phase being distinct from the other, exhibits homogeneous behavior with respect to cycles per instruction (CPI), data cache misses etc. In this paper, we show that phase behavior has important implications on timing analysis. We make use of the homogeneity of a phase to reduce instrumentation overhead at the same time ensuring that accuracy of WCET is not largely affected. We propose a model for estimating WCET using static worst case instruction counts of individual phases and a function of measured average CPI. We describe a WCET analyzer built on this model which targets two different architectures. The WCET analyzer is observed to give safe estimates for most benchmarks considered in this paper. The tightness of the WCET estimates are observed to be improved for most benchmarks compared to Chronos, a well known static WCET analyzer.

Ag-Fe nanoparticles with a highly Ag rich average composition were synthesized by the sonochemical route. Silver-iron system exhibits a wide miscibility gap in the bulk materials. Interestingly, a graded compositional profile along the nanoparticle radius was observed. Regions at and near the surface of the nanoparticle contained both Ag and Fe atoms. The composition got relatively deficient Fe towards the center of the particle with particle core made up of pure Ag. Alloying of Ag and Fe is confirmed by the absence of diffraction signal corresponding to pure Fe phase and presence of a paramagnetic phase in nanoparticles containing a diamagnetic (Ag) and ferromagnetic (Fe) elements.

Morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) systems are characterized by the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases and are associated with anomalous piezoelectric properties. In general, such coexistence is brought about by composition induced ferroelectric-ferroelectric instability. Here we demonstrate that a pure ferroelectric compound Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NBT) exhibits the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases, rhombohedral (R3c) and monoclinic (Cc), in its equilibrium state at room temperature. This was unravelled by adopting a unique strategy of comparative structural analysis of electrically poled and thermally annealed specimens using high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction data. The relative fraction of the coexisting phases was found to be highly sensitive to thermal, mechanical, and electrical stimuli. The coexistence of ferroelectric phases in the ground state of the pure compound will have significant bearing on the way MPB is induced in NBT-based lead-free piezoceramics. Correlation between enhanced lattice polarizability and high piezoelectric response in BiScO3-PbTiO3
Resumo:
Piezoelectric and ex situ electric-field induced structural studies were carried out on closely spaced compositions in the morphotropic phase boundary region of (1 - x) PbTiO3-(x)BiScO3. While the common approach of zero field structural analysis failed to provide a unique relationship between the anomalous piezoresponse of x = 0.3725 and structural factor(s), ex situ study of electric-field induced structural changes revealed that the composition exhibiting the highest piezoelectric response is the one which also exhibits significantly enhanced polarizability of the lattices of both coexisting (monoclinic and tetragonal) phases. The enhanced lattice polarizability manifests as a significant fraction of the monoclinic phase transforming irreversibly to the tetragonal phase after electric poling. The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. We address the problem of detecting cells in biological images. The problem is important in many automated image analysis applications. We identify the problem as one of clustering and formulate it within the framework of robust estimation using loss functions. We show how suitable loss functions may be chosen based on a priori knowledge of the noise distribution. Specifically, in the context of biological images, since the measurement noise is not Gaussian, quadratic loss functions yield suboptimal results. We show that by incorporating the Huber loss function, cells can be detected robustly and accurately. To initialize the algorithm, we also propose a seed selection approach. Simulation results show that Huber loss exhibits better performance compared with some standard loss functions. We also provide experimental results on confocal images of yeast cells. The proposed technique exhibits good detection performance even when the signal-to-noise ratio is low.

The natural product fumagillin exhibits potent antiproliferative and antiangiogenic properties. The semisynthetic analog PPI-2458, (3R,4S,5S,6R)-5-methoxy-4-(2R,3R)-2-methyl-3-(3-methylbut-2-enyl) oxiran-2-yl]-1-oxaspiro2.5]octan-6-yl] N-(2R)-1-amino-3-methyl-1-oxobutan-2-yl]carbamate, demonstrates rapid inactivation of its molecular target, methionine aminopeptidase-2 (MetAP2), and good efficacy in several rodent models of cancer and inflammation with oral dosing despite low apparent oral bioavailability. To probe the basis of its in vivo efficacy, the metabolism of PPI-2458 was studied in detail. Reaction phenotyping identified CYP3A4/5 as the major source of metabolism in humans. Six metabolites were isolated from liver microsomes and characterized by mass spectrometry and nuclear resonance spectroscopy, and their structures were confirmed by chemical synthesis. The synthetic metabolites showed correlated inhibition of MetAP2 enzymatic activity and vascular endothelial cell growth. In an ex vivo experiment, MetAP2 inhibition in white blood cells, thymus, and lymph nodes in rats after single dosing with PPI-2458 and the isolated metabolites was found to correlate with the in vitro activity of the individual species. In a phase 1 clinical study, PPI-2458 was administered to patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. At 15 mg administered orally every other day, MetAP2 in whole blood was 80% inactivated for up to 48 hours, although the exposure of the parent compound was only similar to 10% that of the summed cytochrome P450 metabolites. Taken together, the data confirm the participation of active metabolites in the in vivo efficacy of PPI-2458. The structures define a metabolic pathway for PPI-2458 that is distinct from that of TNP-470 ((3R, 4S, 5S, 6R)-5-methoxy-4-(2R, 3R)-2-methyl-3-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)oxiran-2-yl]-1-oxaspiro2.5]octan-6 -yl] N-(2-chloroacetyl)carbamate). The high level of MetAP2 inhibition achieved in vivo supports the value of fumagillin-derived therapeutics for angiogenic diseases.
