An exact theoretical solution is given for the stresses and displacements in an infinite plate of finite thickness having a circular hole and subjected to axisymmetric normal leading. The solution is given in the form of Fourier-Bessel series and integral. Numerical results are given for stresses in plates having different thickness to hole diameter ratios and loadings. The results are compared with the available approximate theoretical and experimental results.

A new 8-node serendipity quadrilateral plate bending element (MQP8) based on the Mindlin-Reissner theory for the analysis of thin and moderately thick plate bending problems using Integrated Force Method is presented in this paper. The performance of this new element (MQP8) is studied for accuracy and convergence by analyzing many standard benchmark plate bending problems. This new element MQP8 performs excellent in both thin and moderately thick plate bending situations. And also this element is free from spurious/zero energy modes and free from shear locking problem.

The vertical uplift resistance of circular plate anchors, embedded horizontally in a clayey stratum whose cohesion increases linearly with depth, has been obtained under undrained (phi = 0) condition. The axi-symmetric static limit analysis formulation in combination with finite elements proposed recently by the authors has been employed. The variation of the uplift factor (F,) with changes in the embedment ratio (H/B) has been computed for several rates of increases of soil cohesion with depth. It is noted that in all the cases, the magnitude of F-c increases continuously with depth up to a certain value of H-cr/B beyond which the uplift factor becomes essentially constant. The proposed static limit analysis formulation is seen to provide acceptable results even for the two other simple chosen axi-symmetric problems.

Formation of nanocrystalline TiN at low temperatures was demonstrated by combining Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and ion implantation techniques. The Ti films of nominal thickness similar to 250 nm were deposited at a substrate temperature of 200 degrees C by ablating a high pure titanium target in UHV conditions using a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. These films were implanted with 100 keV N+ ions with fluence ranging from 1.0 x 10(16) ions/cm(2) to 1.0 x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The structural, compositional and morphological evolutions were tracked using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the as-deposited titanium film is an fcc phase. With increasing ion fluence, its structure becomes amorphous phase before precipitation of nanocrystalline fcc TiN phase. Compositional depth profiles obtained from SIMS have shown the extent of nitrogen concentration gradient in the implantation zone. Both as-deposited and ion implanted films showed much higher hardness as compared to the bulk titanium. AFM studies revealed a gradual increase in surface roughness leading to surface patterning with increase in ion fluence.

Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition is a single step process wherein the ablated elemental metal reacts with a low pressure ambient gas to form a compound. We report here a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry based analytical methodology to conduct minimum number of experiments to arrive at optimal process parameters to obtain high quality TiN thin film. Quality of these films was confirmed by electron microscopic analysis. This methodology can be extended for optimization of other process parameters and materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Surface texture of harder mating surfaces plays an important role during sliding against softer materials and hence the importance of characterizing the surfaces in terms of roughness parameters. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the surface texture effect of hard surfaces on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. A tribological couple made of a super purity aluminium pin against steel plate was used in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates, namely roughness and texture, were varied in the tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely, the adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture and are independent of surface roughness (R-a). Among the various surface roughness parameters, the average or the mean slope of the profile was found to explain the variations best. Under lubricated conditions, stick-slip phenomena was observed, the amplitude of which depends on the plowing component of friction. The presence of stick-slip motion under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. In the present investigation, unidirectional grinding marks were attained on the steel plates. Then aluminium (Al) pins were slid at 0.2°, 0.6°, 1.0°, 1.4°, 1.8°, 2.2° and 2.6° tilt angles of the plate with the grinding marks perpendicular and parallel to the sliding direction under both dry and lubricated conditions using a pin-on-plate inclined sliding tester to understand the influence of tilt angle and grinding marks direction of the plate on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction depend primarily on the grinding marks direction of the harder mating surface. Stick-slip phenomenon was observed only under lubricated conditions. For the case of pins slid perpendicular to the unidirectional grinding marks stick-slip phenomenon was observed for tilt angles exceeding 0.6°, the amplitude of which increases with increasing tilt angles. However, for the case of the pins slid parallel to the unidirectional grinding marks the stick-slip phenomena was observed for angles exceeding 2.2°, the amplitude of which also increases with increasing tilt angle. The presence of stick-slip phenomena under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities.

An analysis is performed to study the unsteady combined forced and free convection flow (mixed convection flow) of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point adjacent to a heated vertical surface. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is due to the free stream velocity, which varies arbitrarily with time. Both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions are considered in this analysis. By using suitable transformations, the Navier-Stokes and energy equations with four independent variables (x, y, z, t) are reduced to a system of partial differential equations with two independent variables (eta, tau). These transformations also uncouple the momentum and energy equations resulting in a primary axisymmetric flow, in an energy equation dependent on the primary flow and in a buoyancy-induced secondary flow dependent on both primary flow and energy. The resulting system of partial differential equations has been solved numerically by using both implicit finite-difference scheme and differential-difference method. An interesting result is that for a decelerating free stream velocity, flow reversal occurs in the primary flow after certain instant of time and the magnetic field delays or prevents the flow reversal. The surface heat transfer and the surface shear stress in the primary flow increase with the magnetic field, but the surface shear stress in the buoyancy-induced secondary flow decreases. Further the heat transfer increases with the Prandtl number, but the surface shear stress in the secondary flow decreases.

The insertion of phenyl isocyanate into titanium isopropoxide leads to the formation of a dimeric complex [Ti(O ' Pr)(2)(mu-O ' Pr){C6H5N(O ' Pr)CO}](2) (1) which has been structurally characterized. Reaction of titanium isopropoxide with two and more than 2 equiv. of phenyl isocyanate is complicated by competitive, reversible insertion between the titanium carbamate and titanium isopropoxide. The ligand formed by insertion of phenyl isocyanate into the titanium carbamate has been structurally characterized in its protonated form C6H5N{C(O ' Pr)O}C(O)N(H)C6H5 (3aH). Insertion into the carbamate is kinetically favored whereas insertion into isopropoxide gives the thermodynamically favored product. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Suitable pin-to-hole interference can significantly increase the fatigue life of a pin joint. In practical design, the initial stresses due to interference are high and they are proportional to the effective interference. In experimental studies on such joints, difficulties have been experienced in estimating the interference accurately from physical measurements of pin and hole diameters. A simple photoelastic method has been developed to determine the effective interference to a high degree of accuracy. This paper presents the method and reports illustrative data from a successful application thereof.

It is well known that the analysis of vibration of orthogonally stiffened rectangular plates and grillages may be simplified by replacing the actual structure by an orthotropic plate. This needs a suitable determination of the four elastic rigidity constants Dx, Dy, Dxy, D1 and the mass {Mathematical expression} of the orthotropic plate. A method is developed here for determining these parameters in terms of the sectional properties of the original plate-stiffener combination or the system of interconnected beams. Results of experimental work conducted on aluminium plates agree well with the results of the theory developed here.

Antipyrine complexes of TiO2+, ZrO2+, Zr4+, Th4+ and UO2+2 perchlorates with molecular formulae TiO(Apy)4(ClO4)2, ZrO(Apy)3(ClO4)2, Zr(Apy)6(ClO4)4, Th(Apy)7(ClO4)4 and UO2(Apy)5(ClO4)2 have been prepared and characterized. The complexes are stable in air at room temperature and decompose exothermally at ~3OO °C. The i.r. study indicates the bonding of the antipyrine to the metal ion through its carbonyl oxygen. The nature of the bonding of the perchlorate and the stereochemistry of the complexes are discussed in the light of infrared spectra, conductivity in solvents of different polarity, and molecular weight measurements. From the UO2+2 group frequencies, the force constant K and rU-o are found to be 6.29 × 105 dynes/ cm-1 and 1.74 Å, respectively.

Some physicochemical properties of peroxy titanium compounds are explained by assigning a strained triangular ring structure to the peroxy titanyl group, with a bent and reduced overlap of the O---O bonding orbitals. The stability of the peroxy group is found to depend on the stability of the other ligands. The decreasing order of stability of the peroxy group in the compounds is as: oxalato > meleato > malonato > sulphato > peroxide of titanium.
