Separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite from the bulk concentrate of a low grade molybdenite ore from Chintamani, Kolar District, Karnataka, has been attempted in a modified Hallimond tube microflotation set-up. The flotation parameters studied are, sodium sulphide and potassium cyanide as depressants for chalcopyrite, pH, depressant concentration, steaming time and time of flotation. Selectivity index was used as a separation parameter. Steaming for 25 min followed by flotation for 7 min at 80 mg/l concentration of potassium cyanide and pH 9 gave the best results for separation of molybdenite. 19 ref.--AA

Sequence specific resonance assignment constitutes an important step towards high-resolution structure determination of proteins by NMR and is aided by selective identification and assignment of amino acid types. The traditional approach to selective labeling yields only the chemical shifts of the particular amino acid being selected and does not help in establishing a link between adjacent residues along the polypeptide chain, which is important for sequential assignments. An alternative approach is the method of amino acid selective `unlabeling' or reverse labeling, which involves selective unlabeling of specific amino acid types against a uniformly C-13/N-15 labeled background. Based on this method, we present a novel approach for sequential assignments in proteins. The method involves a new NMR experiment named, {(CO)-C-12 (i) -N-15 (i+1)}-filtered HSQC, which aids in linking the H-1(N)/N-15 resonances of the selectively unlabeled residue, i, and its C-terminal neighbor, i + 1, in HN-detected double and triple resonance spectra. This leads to the assignment of a tri-peptide segment from the knowledge of the amino acid types of residues: i - 1, i and i + 1, thereby speeding up the sequential assignment process. The method has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, applicable to H-2 labeled protein and can be coupled with cell-free synthesis and/or automated assignment approaches. A detailed survey involving unlabeling of different amino acid types individually or in pairs reveals that the proposed approach is also robust to misincorporation of N-14 at undesired sites. Taken together, this study represents the first application of selective unlabeling for sequence specific resonance assignments and opens up new avenues to using this methodology in protein structural studies.

This paper considers the problem of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks when the primary user employs Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). We specifically consider the scenario when the channel between the primary and a secondary user is frequency selective. We develop cooperative sequential detection algorithms based on energy detectors. We modify the detectors to mitigate the effects of some common model uncertainties such as timing and frequency offset, IQ-imbalance and uncertainty in noise and transmit power. The performance of the proposed algorithms are studied via simulations. We show that the performance of the energy detector is not affected by the frequency selective channel. We also provide a theoretical analysis for some of our algorithms.

Bioconversion of acyclic isoprenoids using a strain of Aspergillus niger results in hydroxylated metabolites with regio- and stereoselectivity. The organism carries out oxidation of the terminal allylic methyl group and the remote double bond in all the compounds tested (I-VII). However, these two activities seem to have preferential structural requirements. When an acyclic isoprenoid with a ketone functionality such as geranylacetone is used as the substrate, the organism also carries out the asymmetric reduction of the keto group. All the metabolites formed have been purified and characterized by conventional spectroscopic methods and quantification has been made by gas chromatographic analyses.

A symmetric cascade of selective pulses applied on connected transitions leads to the excitation of a selected multiple-quantum coherence by a well-defined angle. This cascade selectively operates on the subspace of the multiple-quantum coherence and acts as a generator of rotation selectively on the multiple-quantum subspace. Single-transition operator algebra has been used to explain these experiments. Experiments have been performed on two- and three-spin systems. It is shown that such experiments can be utilized to measure the relaxation times of selected multiple-quantum coherences or of a specifically prepared initial longitudinal state of the spin system.

Very rapid (within 5 min), selective, single-step deoxygenation of layer- and chain-containing oxides, MoO3, CrO3, V2O5, alpha-VOPO4 . 2H(2)O and Ag6Mo10O33 has been accomplished using graphitic carbon in a microwave-assisted reaction. The products were found to be MoO2, Cr2O3, VO2, VPO4 and a mixture of (Ag + MoO2), respectively. Products were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Although conventional methods of preparing these materials are tedious, the present method is simple, fast and yields very homogeneous products of good crystallinity. Our results reveal that while layer- and chain-containing oxides undergo rapid microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction, the non-layered materials do not. The high structural selectivity of these reactions is suggestive of the topochemical nature of the fast reduction process.

The higher substrate and chiral auxiliary concentration is a pre-requisite to obtain efficient separation of H-1 NMR signals of enantiomers. The higher concentration of chiral lanthanide shift reagents provides broadened spectral lines resulting in a severe loss of resolution between the enantiomer resonances. In order to circumvent such difficulties, herein we present the application and the usefulness of a selective F-1 decoupled correlation (COSY) experiment which yields proton decoupled proton spectra in the indirect dimension. The potentiality of the experiment is demonstrated on several chiral compounds possessing different functional groups, employing either a lanthanide shift reagent or a solvating reagent as chiral auxiliaries. The selective withdrawal of pituitary gonadotropins through specific antibodies is known to cause disruption of spermatogenesis. The cellular mechanism responsible for the degenerative changes under isolated effect of luteinizing hormone (LH) deprivation is not clear. Using antibodies specific to LH we have investigated the effect of immunoneutralization of LH on apoptotic cell death in the testicular cells of the immature and the adult rats. Specific neutralization of LH resulted in apoptotic cell death of germ cells, both in the immature and the adult rats. The germ cells from control animals showed predominantly high molecular weight DNA, while the antiserum treated group showed DNA cleavage into low molecular weight DNA ladder characteristic of apoptosis. This pattern could be observed within 24 h of a/s administration and the effect could be reversed by testosterone. The germ cells were purified by centrifugal elutriation and the vulnerability of germ cell types to undergo apoptosis under LH deprivation was investigated. The round spermatids and the pachytene spermatocytes were found to be the most sensitive germ cells to lack of LH and underwent apoptosis. Interestingly, spermatogonial cells were found to be the least sensitive germ cells to the lack of LH in terms of apoptotic cell death. Results show that LH, in addition to being involved in the germ cell differentiation, is also involved in cell survival and prevent degeneration of germ cells during spermatogenesis. Apoptotic DNA fragmentation may serve as a useful marker for the study of hormonal regulation of spermatogenesis and the specific neutralization of gonadotropic hormones can be a reliable model for the study of the molecular mechanism of apoptosis.
