The effect of host glass composition on the optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of Nd3+ has been studied in mixed alkali borate glasses of the type xNa(2)O-(30-x)K2O-69.5B(2)O(3)-0.5Nd(2)O(3) (X = 5,10,15,20 and 25). Various spectroscopic parameters such as Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), spin-orbit (xi(4f)) and configuration interaction (alpha, beta) parameters have been calculated. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(lambda)) have been calculated and the radiative transition probabilities (A(rad)), radiative lifetimes (tau(r)), branching ratios (beta) and integrated absorption cross sections (Sigma) have been obtained for certain excited states of the Nd3+, ion and are discussed with respect to x. From the fluorescence spectra, the effective fluorescence line widths (Deltalambda(eff)) and stimulated emission cross sections (sigma(p)) have been obtained for the three transitions F-4(3/2) --> I-4(9/2), F-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) and F-4(3/2) --> I-4(13/2) of Nd3+. The stimulated emission cross section (sigma(p)) values are found to be in the range (2.0-4.8) x 10(-2)0 cm(2) and they are large enough to indicate that the mixed alkali borate glasses could be potential laser host materials.

The photocatalytic antibacterial activity of Ag impregnated combustion synthesized TiO(2) (0.25 g/L) was studied against Escherichia coil in presence of UV irradiation. The effect of various parameters, such as anions, canons, hydrogen peroxide and pH, on the photocatalytic inactivation was investigated. The addition of inorganic ions showed a negative effect on inactivation. Among anions, the presence of chloride ions was observed to have a maximum negative effect and reduced the inactivation considerably. Among cations, the bacterial inactivation reduced significantly in the presence of Ca(2+) ions. Hydrogen peroxide addition in combination with Ag/TiO(2) photocatalysis, however, improved the inactivation. Photocatalysis with high concentration of H(2)O(2) yielded complete bacterial inactivation within few minutes. The photocatalytic inactivation of E. coil was not affected by variation in pH. We report the synthesis of a novel class of low band gap copolymers based on anacenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline core and oligothiophene derivatives acting as the acceptor and the donor moieties, respectively. The optical properties of the copolymers were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy while the electrochemical properties were determined by cyclic voltammetry. The band gap of these polymers was found to be in the range 1.8-2.0 eV as calculated from the optical absorption band edge. X-ray diffraction measurements show weak pi-pi stacking interactions between the polymer chains. The hole mobility of the copolymers was evaluated using field-effect transistor measurements yielding values in the range 10(-5)-10(-3) cm(2)/Vs.

We revisit the extraction of alpha(s)(M-tau(2)) from the QCD perturbative corrections to the hadronic tau branching ratio, using an improved fixed-order perturbation theory based on the explicit summation of all renormalization-group accessible logarithms, proposed some time ago in the literature. In this approach, the powers of the coupling in the expansion of the QCD Adler function are multiplied by a set of functions D-n, which depend themselves on the coupling and can be written in a closed form by iteratively solving a sequence of differential equations. We find that the new expansion has an improved behavior in the complex energy plane compared to that of the standard fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT), and is similar but not identical to the contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT). With five terms in the perturbative expansion we obtain in the (MS) over bar scheme alpha(s)(M-tau(2)) = 0.338 +/- 0.010, using as input a precise value for the perturbative contribution to the hadronic width of the tau lepton reported recently in the literature.

The intersection of the conifold z(1)(2) + z(2)(2) + z(3)(2) = 0 and S-5 is a compact 3-dimensional manifold X-3. We review the description of X-3 as a principal U(1) bundle over S-2 and construct the associated monopole line bundles. These monopoles can have only even integers as their charge. We also show the Kaluza-Klein reduction of X-3 to S-2 provides an easy construction of these monopoles. Using the analogue of the Jordan-Schwinger map, our techniques are readily adapted to give the fuzzy version of the fibration X-3 -> S-2 and the associated line bundles. This is an alternative new realization of the fuzzy sphere S-F(2) and monopoles OH it.

Long-term (2009-2012) data from ground-based measurements of aerosol black carbon (BC) from a semi-urban site, Pantnagar (29.0 degrees N, 79.5 degrees E, 231 m amsl), in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) near the Himalayan foothills are analyzed to study the regional characterization. Large variations are seen in BC at both diurnal and seasonal scales, associated with the mesoscale and synoptic meteorological processes, and local/regional anthropogenic activities. BC diurnal variations show two peaks (morning and evening) arising from the combined effects of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) dynamics and local emissions. The diurnal amplitudes as well as the rates of diurnal evolution are the highest in winter season, followed by autumn, and the lowest in summer-monsoon. BC exhibits nearly an inverse relation with mixing layer depth in all seasons; being strongest in winter (R-2 = 0.89) and weakest (R-2 = 0.33) in monsoon (July-August). Unlike BC, co-located aerosol optical depths (AOD) and aerosol absorption are highest in spring over IGP, probably due to the presence of higher abundances of aerosols (including dust) above the ABL (in the free troposphere). AOD (500 nm) showed annual peak (>0.6) in May-June, dominated by coarse mode, while fine mode aerosols dominated in late autumn and early winter. Aerosols profiles from CALIPSO show highest values close to the surface in winter/autumn, similar to the feature seen in surface BC, whereas at altitudes > 2 km, the extinction is maximum in spring/summer. WRF-Chem model is used to simulate BC temporal variations and then compared with observed BC. The model captures most of the important features of the diurnal and seasonal variations but significantly underestimated the observed BC levels, suggesting improvements in diurnal and seasonal varying BC emissions apart from the boundary layer processes.
