Deformation and failure of a film/substrate system subjected to spherical indentation: Part 1. Experimental validation of stresses and strains derived using Hankel transform technique in an elastic film/substrate system

Our concern here is to rationalize experimental observations of failure modes brought about by indentation of hard thin ceramic films deposited on metallic substrates. By undertaking this exercise, we would like to evolve an analytical framework that can be used for designs of coatings. In Part I of the paper we develop an algorithm and test it for a model system. Using this analytical framework we address the issue of failure of columnar TiN films in Part II [J. Mater. Res. 21, 783 (2006)] of the paper. In this part, we used a previously derived Hankel transform procedure to derive stress and strain in a birefringent polymer film glued to a strong substrate and subjected to spherical indentation. We measure surface radial strains using strain gauges and bulk film stresses using photo elastic technique (stress freezing). For a boundary condition based on Hertzian traction with no film interface constraint and assuming the substrate constraint to be a function of the imposed strain, the theory describes the stress distributions well. The variation in peak stresses also demonstrates the usefulness of depositing even a soft film to protect an underlying substrate.

An Eventful Synthetic Approach Towards the Biologically Potent Natural Product Ottelione A: Enantio-, Regio- and Stereoselective Construction of the Bicyclic Core

A novel synthetic approach towards the recently reported anti-tumor and anti-tuberculor natural product ottelione A from the readily available Diels-Alder adduct of cyclopentadiene and p-benzoquinone is delineated. Our short strategy, besides being enantio-, regio- and stereoselective, charts an eventful course and is inherently well-suited for adaptation towards diverse synthetic analogues of this biologically potent natural product.

An Integrated Model of Designing

Current design models and frameworks describe various overlapping fragments of designing. However, little effort exists in consolidating these fragments into an integrated model. We propose a model of designing that integrates product and process facets of designing by combining activities, outcomes, requirements, and solutions. Validation of the model using video protocols of design sessions demonstrates that all the constructs are used naturally by designers but often not to the expected level, which hinders the variety and resulting novelty of the concepts developed in these sessions. To resolve this, a prescriptive framework for supporting design for variety and novelty is proposed and plans for its implementation are created. DOI: 10.1115/1.3467011]

Reinstate hydrogen peroxide as the product of alternative oxidase of plant mitochondria

Chill treatment of potato tubers for 8 days induced mitochondrial O-2 consumption by cyanide-insensitive alternative oxidase (AOX). About half of the total O-2 consumption in such mitochondria was found to be sensitive to salicylhydroxamate (SHAM), a known inhibitor of AOX activity. Addition of catalase to the reaction mixture of AOX during the reaction decreased the rate of SHAM-sensitive O-2 consumption by nearly half, and addition at the end of the reaction released half of the O-2 consumed by AOX, both typical of catalase action on H2O2. This reaffirmed that the product of reduction of O-2 by plant AOX was H2O2 as found earlier and not H2O as reported in some recent reviews.

Reaction of spironaphthalenones with hydroxylamine: Part II. Structure of product in the reaction of 1′-substituted spironaphthalenone.

Reaction of 1′-aryl substituted spironaphthalenones 1a–d with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in ethanol gave substituted cinnamic ester derivatives 4a–d. Similarly, reaction of spironaphthalenone 1a with different alcohols gave the corresponding esters 4i–m. Reaction of unsymmetrical spironaphthalenones 1e–h with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in presence of ethanol gave the respective esters 4e–h. All the esters were characterised by their spectral data.

Formation of rearrangement product in photolysis of α,α-dimethydeoxybenzoin upon cyclodextrin complexation

Solid-state irradiation of cyclodextrin complexes of alpha,alpha-dimethyldeoxybenzoin results in the formation of a significant amount of rearrangement product, 4-isopropylbenzophenone, in addition to cage products. This behavior is not observed in the photolysis in solution or in micellar media.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Possible Diastereomers of Heptadeca-1-ene-4,6-diyne-3,8,9,10-tetrol; Putative Structure of a Conjugated Diyne Natural Product Isolated from Hydrocotyle leucocephala

Enantioselective synthesis of possible diastereomers of heptadeca-1-ene-4,6-diyne-3,8,9,10-tetrol, a structure proposed for the natural product isolated from Hydrocotyle leucocephala is accomplished. The reported spectral data of the natural product did not match those of any of the isomers that were synthesized and established that the structure proposed for the natural product is not correct and requires revision.

Experimental validation of the 1-D acoustical model for conical concentric tube resonators with moving medium

Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium.
