Dodecylsulphate-intercalated zinc hydroxysalt, Zn-5(OH)(8)(DS)(2)center dot mH(2)O delaminates to give monolayer colloidal dispersions in alcohols such as 1-butanol and ethylene glycol. The extent of delamination and the stability of the colloidal dispersion are comparable to those of layered double hydroxides. The solvothermal decomposition of the colloidal dispersion of the hydroxysalt in ethylene glycol yields a bimodal ZnO having a nanotubular structure decorated with nanosheets. Crystals suitable for high resolution X-ray diffraction analysis have been grown of the 29,774-Da protein, xylanase (1,-4-beta-xylan xylanohydrolase EC 3.2.1.8) from the thermophilic fungus Thermoascus aurantiacus. This protein, an endoxylanase demonstrates the hydrolysis of β-(1-4)-Image -xylose linkage in xylans and crystallizes as monoclinic pinacoids in the presence of ammonium sulphate buffered at pH 6·5, and also with neutral polyethylene glycol 6000. The crystals belong to space group P 21 and have cell dimensions, a = 41·2 Å, b = 67·76 Å, c = 51·8 Å; β = 113·2°.

Electrolytes based on polyethylene glycol (PEG, mol.wt.8000) and LiCl of compositions, (PEG)(x)LiCl, x=4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 40, 60, where x is the O/Li ratio, were prepared by solution casting from methanol solutions. FTIR studies indicate that the ether oxygens of the polymer chain participate in Li+ ion conduction. The presence of a salt-polymer complex that melts around 190 degrees C was evidenced by DSC measurements for the electrolytes with compositions x<12. The highest conductivity was obtained at the composition x=10 which was attributed to the presence of a mostly amorphous compound. NMR measurements indicated two regions of motional narrowing, one attributable to the glass transition and another to translational diffusion.

Cationic ionenes that bear electron-rich 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) units within the alkylene segment were allowed to interact with different types of electron-deficient, acceptor-containing molecules in an effort to realize intercalation-induced folding of the ionenes; the collapse of the chains was expected to occur in such a way that the donor and acceptor units become arranged in an alternating fashion. Several acceptor-bearing molecules were prepared by the derivatization of pyromellitic dianhydride and naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride with two different oligoethylene glycol monomethyl ether monoamines. This yielded acceptor molecules with different water solubility and allowed the examination of solvophobic effects in the folding process. UV/Vis spectroscopic studies were carried out by using a 1:1 mixture of the DAN-ionenes and different acceptor molecules in water/DMSO solvent mixtures. The intensity of the charge-transfer (CT) band was seen to increase with the water content in the solvent mixture, thereby suggesting that the intercalation is indeed aided by solvophobic effects. The naphthalene diimide (NDI) bearing acceptor molecules consistently formed significantly stronger CT complexes when compared to the pyromellitic diimide (PDI) bearing acceptor molecules, which is a reflection of the stronger pi-stacking tendency of the former. AFM studies of drop-cast films of different ionene-acceptor combinations revealed that compact folded structures are formed most effectively under conditions in which the strongest CT complex is formed.

Resistivity imaging of a reconfigurable phantom with circular inhomogeneities is studied with a simple instrumentation and data acquisition system for Electrical Impedance Tomography. The reconfigurable phantom is developed with stainless steel electrodes and a sinusoidal current of constant amplitude is injected to the phantom boundary using opposite current injection protocol. Nylon and polypropylene cylinders with different cross sectional areas are kept inside the phantom and the boundary potential data are collected. The instrumentation and the data acquisition system with a DIP switch-based multiplexer board are used to inject a constant current of desired amplitude and frequency. Voltage data for the first eight current patterns (128 voltage data) are found to be sufficient to reconstruct the inhomogeneities and hence the acquisition time is reduced. Resistivity images are reconstructed from the boundary data for different inhomogeneity positions using EIDORS-2D. The results show that the shape and resistivity of the inhomogeneity as well as the background resistivity are successfully reconstructed from the potential data for single or double inhomogeneity phantoms. The resistivity images obtained from the single and double inhomogeneity phantom clearly indicate the inhomogeneity as the high resistive material. Contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and contrast recovery (CR) of the reconstructed images are found high for the inhomogeneities near all the electrodes arbitrarily chosen for the entire study. We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). We describe in this paper the synthesis and characterization of a new layered phosphate, MoOPO4 . 2H(2)O (I), and its intercalation chemistry. The phosphate I, crystallizing in a tetragonal structure (a = 6.375(7), c = 7.80(1) Angstrom, and Z = 2) similar to that of VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, has been synthesized by the reduction of MoO2(HPO4). H2O (II) using ethylene glycol in an CH3CN medium at similar to 60 degrees C. Interestingly, I could be readily oxidized back to II using Br-2 in CH3CN at room temperature. Considering the close structural relationship existing between I and II, it is likely that the reduction and oxidation of the phosphates proceed by a topotactic mechanism. I is a novel layered host intercalating a variety of organic bases such as n-alkylamines, pyridine, and aniline, mainly through an acid-base interaction. Unlike VOPO4 . 2H(2)O, I does not exhibit reductive intercalation reactivity.

A series of new photo-crosslinkable main-chain liquid-crystalline polymers containing bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units have been studied. These units in the polymers function as mesogens as well as photoactive centres. Polyesters with three different bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene)cycloalkanones corresponding to three cycloalkanones, namely cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone, have been prepared. Three dicarboxylic acids with ether linkages, which were derived from oligoethylene oxides, namely triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and pentaethylene glycol, have been used as spacers in these polymers. Polymerization was carried out by both solution and interfacial polycondensation; the latter method gave high-molecular-weight polymers. Structural characterizations were done by ultra-violet, infra-red and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Liquid-crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized-light optical microscopy. These polymers show a nematic mesophase. Liquid-crystalline transition temperatures were correlated with polymer structure. The decrease in transition temperature with increase in cycloalkanone ring size was explained in terms of the change in geometrical anisotropy of bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units. MNDO (modified neglect of differential overlap) calculations were performed on the model compounds, bis(4-acetyloxybenzylidene)cycloalkanone to elucidate the geometrical variation of the mesogenic units with cycloalkanone ring size. Studies of photolysis reveal the two kinds of photoreactions that proceed in these polymer systems, namely photoisomerization and photo-crosslinking. The former reaction disrupts the parallel stacking of the chromophores and is reflected as an increase in the ultra-violet spectral intensity. The favourability of these two reactions depends on the mobility of the polymer chains. When the photolysis was done below T-g, photo-crosslinking dominates over photoisomerization. Above T-g, photoisomerization is followed by photo-crosslinking. The photosensitivity of the polymers decreases with increase in size of the cycloalkanone ring.

A new series of multielement flame-retardant plasticizers containing polyethylene stibinite phosphate esters have been prepared by bulk polymerization from ethylene glycol with various antimony (III) aryloxydichlorides and arylphosphorodichloridates possessing various combinations of substituent [Cl,Br,NO2]. All the polymers are pink-coloured viscous fluids. They were characterized by inherent viscosity, density, IR, H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The thermal behaviour of the polymers was compared by thermogravimetric analysis and correlated with their structures. The flammability studies were carried out by the limiting oxygen index test. The polymers containing P, Sb, N and Pr elements in their backbone show superior thermal-and flame-retardant characteristics than the other polymers. A comparative study was carried out with one of the synthesized polymers as a polymeric flame-retardant additive to plasticized PVC. The results showed improved LOI and mechanical properties to that of the conventional flame-retardant additive composition. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Background and purpose of the study: Herbal enhancers compared to the synthetic ones have shown less toxis effects. Coumarins have been shown at concentrations inhibiting phospoliphase C-Y (Phc-Y) are able to enhance tight junction (TJ) permeability due to hyperpoalation of Zonolous Occludense-1 (ZO-1) proteins. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of ethanolic extract of Angelica archengelica (AA-E) which contain coumarin on permeation of repaglinide across rat epidermis and on the tight junction plaque protein ZO-1 in HaCaT cells. Methods: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) from the rat skin treated with different concentrations of AA-E was assessed by Tewameter. Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on were performed on AA-E treated rat skin portions. The possibility of AA-E influence on the architecture of tight junctions by adverse effect on the cytoplasmic ZO-1 in HaCaT cells was investigated. Finally, the systemic delivery of repaglinide from the optimized transdermal formulation was investigated in rats. Results: The permeation of repaglinide across excised rat epidermis was 7-fold higher in the presence of AA-E (5% w/v) as compared to propylene glycol:ethanol (7:3) mixture. The extract was found to perturb the lipid microconstituents in both excised and viable rat skin, although, the effect was less intense in the later. The enhanced permeation of repaglinide across rat epidermis excised after treatment with AA-E (5% w/v) for different periods was in concordance with the high TEWL values of similarly treated viable rat skin. Further, the observed increase in intercellular space, disordering of lipid structure and corneocyte detachment indicated considerable effect on the ultrastructure of rat epidermis. Treatment of HaCaT cell line with AA-E (0.16% w/v) for 6 hrs influenced ZO-1 as evidenced by reduced immunofluorescence of anti-TJP1 (ZO-1) antibody in Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy studies (CLSM) studies. The plasma concentration of repaglinide from transdermal formulation was maintained higher and for longer time as compared to oral administration of repaglinide. Major conclusion: Results suggest the overwhelming influence of Angelica archengelica in enhancing the percutaneous permeation of repaglinide to be mediated through perturbation of skin lipids and tight junction protein (ZO-1).

Mesoporous MnO2 is prepared from KMnO4 by using a tri-block copolymer, namely, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) as a reducing as well as a structure-directing agent. The as synthesized MnO2 samples are poorly crystalline with mesoporosity having pore diameter between 8 and 40 nm. BET surface area as high as 273 m(2) g(-1) is obtained. By heating, the poorly crystalline MnO2 turns into a well crystalline form at 400 degrees C with nanorod morphology. However, the surface area decreases for the heated samples. Samples of MnO2 prepared by varying the ratio of KMnO4 and the copolymer, and also the heated samples are subjected to electrochemical characterization for supercapacitor studies. High specific capacitance values on mass basis are obtained for the as prepared mesoporous MnO2 samples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate an ultrafast method for the formation of, graphene supported Pt catalysts by the co-reduction of graphene oxide and Pt salt using ethylene glycol under microwave irradiation conditions. Detailed analysis of the mechanism of formation of the hybrids indicates a synergistic co-reduction mechanism whereby the presence of the Pt ions leads to a faster reduction of GO and the presence of the defect sites on the reduced GO serves as anchor points for the heterogeneous nucleation of Pt. The resulting hybrid consists of ultrafine nanoparticles of Pt uniformly distributed on the reduced GO susbtrate. We have shown that the hybrid exhibits good catalytic activity for methanol oxidation and hydrogen conversion reactions. The mechanism is general and applicable for the synthesis of other multifunctional hybrids based on graphene.

The ion conduction and thermal properties of composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) comprising Poly(ethylene) Glycol (PEG, mol wt. 2000), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) and insulating Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticle fillers were studied by complex impedance analysis and DSC techniques. The average size of the nanoparticles was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Scherrer's equation and was found to be similar to 8 nm. The same was also determined by TEM imaging and found to be similar to 12 nm. The glass transition temperature T, as measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), showed a minimum at 5 mol% of narroparticles. Fractional crystallinity was determined using DSC. NMR was used to deter-mine crystallinity of a pure PEG sample, which was then used as the standard. Fractional crystallinity X. was the lowest for 5 mol% and beyond. The ionic conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte containing 5 mol% Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles was found to be 1.82 x 10(-5) S/cm, while for the pristine one, it was 7.27 x 10(-7) S/cm at room temperature. As a function of nanoparticle content, conductivity was observed to go through two maxima, one at around 5 mol% and another shallower one at around 12 mol%. The temperature dependence of conductivity could be divided into two regions, one consistent with Arrhenius behaviour and the other with VTF. We conclude that the enhancement of ionic conductivity on the addition of Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles is a result of reduction in both the T, and the crystallinity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Composite ionic conductors based on magnesium salts and sol-gel derived silicate-tetraethylene glycol hybrids have been synthesized. The structure of these materials has been studied by FT-IR, FT-Raman, Si-29 and C-13 NMR and XRD techniques. The composite systems can be best described as diphasic with silicate as filters in the organic phase that provides solubility of the ionic dispersants. The ionic interactions in the matrix are clearly observed in the FT-Raman spectra. The ionic conductivity is determined to be of the order of 10(-7) to 10(-5) S cm(-1) at room temperature for MgCl2 and Mg(ClO4)(2) salts respectively. The conductivity reaches 10(-4) and 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 80degreesC respectively.

Two types of cationic cholesteryl amphiphiles, one where the headgroup is attached to the steroid by an ester linkage and the second by an ether linkage, were synthesized. A third type of cholesteryl lipid bearing an oligoethylene glycol segment was also prepared. Each of these synthetic lipids generated vesicle-like aggregates with closed inner aqueous compartments from their aqueous suspensions. We examined their interaction with L-α-dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membranes using fluorescence anisotropy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When included in membranes, the synthetic cholesteryl lipids were found to quench the chain motion of the acyl chains of DPPC. This suggests that these cationic cholesteryl derivatives act as filler molecules despite modification at the headgroup level from the molecular structure of natural cholesterol. Careful analyses of DSC and fluorescence anisotropy data suggest that the nature of perturbation induced by each of these cationic cholesterol derivatives is dependent on the details of their molecular structure and provides significant information on the nature of interaction of these derivatives with phospholipid molecules. In general, amphiphiles that support structured water at the interfacial region tend to rigidify the fluid phase more than others. Importantly, these cholesteryl amphiphiles behave less like cholesterol in that their incorporation in DPPC not only abolishes the phase transition but also depresses the phase transition temperature.
