Transparent BaNaB9O15 (BNBO) glasses were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) followed by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies confirmed the amorphous and glassy nature of the as-quenched samples, respectively. The effect of seeding on the crystallization of BNBO glasses was studied by non-isothermal DSC method and was modeled using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami and Ozawa equations. The activation energy for seeded glasses decreased with the increase in fraction of crystallization. The values for the onset of crystallization and Avrami exponent were found to be lower for seeded samples which were associated with the heterogeneous nucleation and epitaxial processes.

The effect of some experimental parameters, namely sample weight, particle size and its distribution, heating rate and flow rate of inert gas, on the fractional decomposition of calcium carbonate samples have been studied both experimentally and theoretical. The general conclusions obtained from theoretical analysis are corroborated qualitatively by the experimental data. The analysis indicates that the kinetic compensating effect may be partly due to the variations in experimental parameters for different experiments.

A study of the burning rates of compressed mixtures of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and trimethylammonium perchlorate (TMAP) has been carried out at ambient pressure. The overall increase in the linear burning rate, showing a maximum at a composition having 80% TMAP, has been discussed in terms of factors such as stoichiometry, presence of faster burning component, and eutectic melt formation. The thermal decomposition studies of the mixtures, using isothermal thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis techniques, indicate the possibility of eutectic melt formation.

Gelatin-g-poly(methyl acrylate) and gelatin-g-poly(acrylonitrile) copolymers were prepared in an aqueous medium using K2S2O8 initiator. A plausible mechanism has been put forward for the observed grafting behavior of monomers. Gelatin-g-PAN showed a greater resistance to mixed bacterial inolucum compared to gelatin-g-PMA samples. The rate of degradation decreased with the increase in grafting efficiency. A parallel set of experiments carried out by employing the samples as the only source of both carbon and nitrogen showed a marginal but definite increase in the utilization of the polymer. The nitrogen analysis also showed the utilization of the polymer. Scanning electron micographs of the polymer films do show extensive pitting after microbiological testing.

Transparent glasses in the system 3BaO-3TiO2-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were confirmed to be non-crystalline by differential thermal analysis (DTA). Thermal parameters were evaluated using non-isothermal DTA experiments. The Kauzmann temperature was found to be 759 K based on heating-rate-dependent glass transition and crystallization temperatures. A theoretical relation for the temperature-dependent viscosity is proposed for these glasses and glass-ceramics.

Effect of heating rate on melting and crystallization of polyamide fibres has been examined using differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) technique. Peak temperature for melting (T m) and crystallization (T k) get suppressed with the increase in the heating rate which has been explained on the basis of chain orientation. Heat of melting (DeltaH m) and crystallization (DeltaH k) have been measured.DeltaH m vs. T m shows a nonlinear dependence which has been explained on the basis of entropy change. Quantitative difference inDeltaH m andDeltaH k values has been explained on the basis of orientation and degradation of the polymer.

Transparent glasses in the composition BaO-0.5Li(2)O-4.5B(2)O(3) (BLBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray powder diffraction combined with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies carried out on the as-quenched samples confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The crystallization behavior of these glasses has been studied by isothermal and nonisothermal methods using DSC. Crystallization kinetic parameters were evaluated from the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. The value of the Avrami exponent (n) was found to be 3.6 +/- 0.1, suggesting that the process involves three-dimensional bulk crystallization. The average value of activation energy associated with the crystallization of BLBO glasses was 317 +/- 10 kJ/mol. Transparent glass-ceramics were fabricated by controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 845 K/40 min. The dielectric constants for BLBO glasses and glass-ceramics in the 100 Hz-10 MHz frequency range were measured as a function of the temperature (300-925 K). The electrical relaxation and dc conductivity characteristics were rationalized using electric modulus formalism. The imaginary part of the electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The temperature-dependent behavior of stretched exponent (beta) was discussed for the as-quenched and heat-treated BLBO glasses.

The stochastic version of Pontryagin's maximum principle is applied to determine an optimal maintenance policy of equipment subject to random deterioration. The deterioration of the equipment with age is modelled as a random process. Next the model is generalized to include random catastrophic failure of the equipment. The optimal maintenance policy is derived for two special probability distributions of time to failure of the equipment, namely, exponential and Weibull distributions Both the salvage value and deterioration rate of the equipment are treated as state variables and the maintenance as a control variable. The result is illustrated by an example

The copolymers, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methyl acrylate) (PMMAMA), poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (PMMAEA) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (PMMABA), of different compositions were synthesized and characterized. The effect of alkyl acrylate content, alkyl group substituents and solvents on the ultrasonic degradation of these copolymers was studied. A model based on continuous distribution kinetics was used to study the kinetics of degradation. The rate coefficients were obtained by fitting the experimental data with the model. The linear dependence of the rate coefficients on the logarithm of the vapor pressure of the solvent indicated that vapor pressure is the crucial parameter that controls the degradation process. The rate of degradation increases with an increase in the alkyl acrylate content. At any particular copolymer composition, the rate of degradation follows the order: PMMAMA > PMMAEA > PMMABA. It was observed that the degradation rate coefficient varies linearly with the mole percentage of the alkyl acrylate in the copolymer.

BACKGROUND: Particle-based agglutination tests consisting of receptors grafted to colloidal microparticles are useful for detecting small quantities of corresponding ligands of interest in fluid test samples, but detection limits of such tests are limited to a certain concentration and it is most desirable to lower the detection limits and to enhance the rate of recognition of ligands. METHODS: A mixture of receptor-coated colloidal microparticles and corresponding ligand was sandwiched between 2 indium tin oxide-coated glass plates. Electrohydrodynamic drag from an alternating-current electric field applied perpendicular to the plates increased the local concentration of the colloidal particles, improving the chances of ligand-receptor interaction and leading to the aggregation of the colloidal particles. RESULTS: With this technique the sensitivity of the ligand-receptor recognition was increased by a factor as large as 50. CONCLUSIONS: This method can improve the sensitivity of particle-based agglutination tests used in immuno-assays and many other applications such as immunoprecipitation and chemical, sniffing. In this paper, new results and insights are derived for the performance of multiple-input, single-output systems with beamforming at the transmitter, when the channel state information is quantized and sent to the transmitter over a noisy feedback channel. It is assumed that there exists a per-antenna power constraint at the transmitter, hence, the equal gain transmission (EGT) beamforming vector is quantized and sent from the receiver to the transmitter. The loss in received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) relative to perfect beamforming is analytically characterized, and it is shown that at high rates, the overall distortion can be expressed as the sum of the quantization-induced distortion and the channel error-induced distortion, and that the asymptotic performance depends on the error-rate behavior of the noisy feedback channel as the number of codepoints gets large. The optimum density of codepoints (also known as the point density) that minimizes the overall distortion subject to a boundedness constraint is shown to be the same as the point density for a noiseless feedback channel, i.e., the uniform density. The binary symmetric channel with random index assignment is a special case of the analysis, and it is shown that as the number of quantized bits gets large the distortion approaches the same as that obtained with random beamforming. The accuracy of the theoretical expressions obtained are verified through Monte Carlo simulations.

The photolytic and photocatalytic degradation of the copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl methacrylate) (MMA–BMA), poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (MMA–EA) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (MMA–MAA) have been carried out in solution in the presence of solution combustion synthesized TiO2 (CS TiO2) and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 (DP 25). The degradation rates of the copolymers were compared with the respective homopolymers. The copolymers and the homopolymers degraded randomly along the chain. The degradation rate was determined using continuous distribution kinetics. For all the polymers, CS TiO2 exhibited superior photo-activity compared to the uncatalysed and DP 25 systems, owing to its high surface hydroxyl content and high specific surface area. The time evolution of the hydroxyl and hydroperoxide stretching vibration in the Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectra of the copolymers indicated that the degradation rate follows the order MMA–MAA > MMA–EA > MMA–BMA. The same order is observed for the rate coefficients of photocatalytic degradation. The photodegradation rate coefficients were compared with the activation energy of pyrolytic degradation. In degradation by pyrolysis, it was observed that MMA–BMA was the least stable followed by MMA–EA and MMA–MAA. The observed contrast in the order of thermal stability compared to the photo-stability of these copolymers was attributed to the two different mechanisms governing the scission of the polymer and the evolution of the products.

Chitosan grafted poly(alkyl methacrylate)s (namely chitosan grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (ChgPMMA), chitosan grafted poly(ethyl methacrylate)(ChgPEMA), chitosan grafted poly(butyl methacrylate) (ChgPBMA) and chitosan grafted poly(hexyl methacrylate) (ChgPHMA)) were synthesized and characterized by using FT-IR and C-13 NMR techniques. The adsorption batch experiments on these grafted copolymers were conducted by using an anionic sulfonated dye. Orange-G. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used to determine the kinetics of adsorption. The effect of grafting, effect of process variables and the effect of different sulfonated anionic dyes (Orange-C, Congo Red, Remazol Brill Blue R and Methyl Blue) on the adsorption kinetics was determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to fit the adsorption isotherms and from the values of correlation coefficients (R-2), it was observed that the experimental data fits very well to the Langmuir model. The values of the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents follow the order: ChgPMMA > ChgPEMA > ChgPBMA > ChgPHMA > chitosan. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermal degradation behavior of banana fiber and polypropylene/banana fiber composites has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Banana fiber was found to be decomposing in two stages, first one around 320 degrees C and the second one around 450 degrees C. For chemically treated banana fiber, the decomposition process has been at a higher temperature, indicating thermal stability for the treated fiber. Activation energies for thermal degradation were estimated using Coats and Redfern method. Calorific value of the banana fiber was measured using a constant volume isothermal bomb calorimeter. rystallization studies exhibited an increase in the crystallization temperature and crystallinity of polypropylene upon the addition of banana fiber. Counting-rate meters normally used for finding pulse frequencies are sluggish in their response to any rapid change in the pulse repetition frequency (P.R.F.). An instrument is described which measures each pulse interval and provides immediately afterwards an output voltage proportional to the reciprocal of interval duration. A response to a change in the P.R.F. as rapidly as is physically possible is obtained. The instrument has wide application in low level radiation detection and in several other fields especially for rapidly varying counting-rates.
