The stability of Hagen-Poiseuille flow of a Newtonian fluid of viscosity eta in a tube of radius R surrounded by a viscoelastic medium of elasticity G and viscosity eta(s) occupying the annulus R < r < HR is determined using a linear stability analysis. The inertia of the fluid and the medium are neglected, and the mass and momentum conservation equations for the fluid and wall are linear. The only coupling between the mean flow and fluctuations enters via an additional term in the boundary condition for the tangential velocity at the interface, due to the discontinuity in the strain rate in the mean flow at the surface. This additional term is responsible for destabilizing the surface when the mean velocity increases beyond a transition value, and the physical mechanism driving the instability is the transfer of energy from the mean flow to the fluctuations due to the work done by the mean flow at the interface. The transition velocity Gamma(t) for the presence of surface instabilities depends on the wavenumber k and three dimensionless parameters: the ratio of the solid and fluid viscosities eta(r) = (eta(s)/eta), the capillary number Lambda = (T/GR) and the ratio of radii H, where T is the surface tension of the interface. For eta(r) = 0 and Lambda = 0, the transition velocity Gamma(t) diverges in the limits k much less than 1 and k much greater than 1, and has a minimum for finite k. The qualitative behaviour of the transition velocity is the same for Lambda > 0 and eta(r) = 0, though there is an increase in Gamma(t) in the limit k much greater than 1. When the viscosity of the surface is non-zero (eta(r) > 0), however, there is a qualitative change in the Gamma(t) vs. k curves. For eta(r) < 1, the transition velocity Gamma(t) is finite only when k is greater than a minimum value k(min), while perturbations with wavenumber k < k(min) are stable even for Gamma--> infinity. For eta(r) > 1, Gamma(t) is finite only for k(min) < k < k(max), while perturbations with wavenumber k < k(min) or k > k(max) are stable in the limit Gamma--> infinity. As H decreases or eta(r) increases, the difference k(max)- k(min) decreases. At minimum value H = H-min, which is a function of eta(r), the difference k(max)-k(min) = 0, and for H < H-min, perturbations of all wavenumbers are stable even in the limit Gamma--> infinity. The calculations indicate that H-min shows a strong divergence proportional to exp (0.0832 eta(r)(2)) for eta(r) much greater than 1.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectra are presented for p-nitroazobenzene dissolved in chloroform using 18 excitation Wavelengths, covering the region of (1)(n --> pi*) electronic transition. Raman intensities are observed for various totally symmetric fundamentals, namely, C-C, C-N, N=N, and N-O stretching vibrations, indicating that upon photoexcitation the excited-state evolution occurs along all of these vibrational coordinates. For a few fundamentals, interestingly, in p-nitroazobenzene, it is observed that the RR intensities decrease near the maxima of the resonant electronic (1)(n --> pi*) transition. This is attributed to the interference from preresonant scattering due to the strongly allowed (1)(pi --> pi*) electronic transition. The electronic absorption spectrum and the absolute Raman cross section for the nine Franck-Condon active fundamentals of p-nitroazobenzene have been successfully modeled using Heller's time-dependent formalism for Raman scattering. This employs harmonic description of the lowest energy (1)(n --> pi*) potential energy surface. The short-time isomerization dynamics is then examined from a priori knowledge of the ground-state normal mode descriptions of p-nitroazobenzene to convert the wave packet motion in dimensionless normal coordinates to internal coordinates. It is observed that within 20 fs after photoexcitation in p-nitroazobenzene, the N=N and C-N stretching vibrations undergo significant changes and the unsubstituted phenyl ring and the nitro stretching vibrations are also distorted considerably.

The stability of fluid flow past a membrane of infinitesimal thickness is analysed in the limit of zero Reynolds number using linear and weakly nonlinear analyses. The system consists of two Newtonian fluids of thickness R* and H R*, separated by an infinitesimally thick membrane, which is flat in the unperturbed state. The dynamics of the membrane is described by its normal displacement from the flat state, as well as a surface displacement field which provides the displacement of material points from their steady-state positions due to the tangential stress exerted by the fluid flow. The surface stress in the membrane (force per unit length) contains an elastic component proportional to the strain along the surface of the membrane, and a viscous component proportional to the strain rate. The linear analysis reveals that the fluctuations become unstable in the long-wave (alpha --> 0) limit when the non-dimensional strain rate in the fluid exceeds a critical value Lambda(t), and this critical value increases proportional to alpha(2) in this limit. Here, alpha is the dimensionless wavenumber of the perturbations scaled by the inverse of the fluid thickness R*(-1), and the dimensionless strain rate is given by Lambda(t) = ((gamma) over dot* R*eta*/Gamma*), where eta* is the fluid viscosity, Gamma* is the tension of the membrane and (gamma) over dot* is the strain rate in the fluid. The weakly nonlinear stability analysis shows that perturbations are supercritically stable in the alpha --> 0 limit.

The stability of the Hagen-Poiseuille flow of a Newtonian fluid in a tube of radius R surrounded by an incompressible viscoelastic medium of radius R < r < HR is analysed in the high Reynolds number regime. The dimensionless numbers that affect the fluid flow are the Reynolds number Re = (ρVR / η), the ratio of the viscosities of the wall and fluid ηr = (ηs/η), the ratio of radii H and the dimensionless velocity Γ = (ρV2/G)1/2. Here ρ is the density of the fluid, G is the coefficient of elasticity of the wall and Vis the maximum fluid velocity at the centre of the tube. In the high Reynolds number regime, an asymptotic expansion in the small parameter ε = (1/Re) is employed. In the leading approximation, the viscous effects are neglected and there is a balance between the inertial stresses in the fluid and the elastic stresses in the medium. There are multiple solutions for the leading-order growth rate do), all of which are imaginary, indicating that the fluctuations are neutrally stable, since there is no viscous dissipation of energy or transfer of energy from the mean flow to the fluctruations due to the Reynolds strees. There is an O(ε1/2) correction to the growth rate, s(1), due to the presence of a wall layer of thickness ε1/2R where the viscous stresses are O(ε1/2) smaller than the inertial stresses. An energy balance analysis indicates that the transfer of energy from the mean flow to the fluctuations due to the Reynolds stress in the wall layer is exactly cancelled by an opposite transfer of equal magnitude due to the deformation work done at the interface, and there is no net transfer from the mean flow to the fluctuations. Consequently, the fluctuations are stabilized by the viscous dissipation in the wall layer, and the real part of s(1) is negative. However, there are certain values of Γ and wavenumber k where s(l) = 0. At these points, the wail layer amplitude becomes zero because the tangential velocity boundary condition is identically satisfied by the inviscid flow solution. The real part of the O(ε) correction to the growth rate s(2) turns out to be negative at these points, indicating a small stabilizing effect due to the dissipation in the bulk of the fluid and the wall material. It is found that the minimum value of s(2) increases [is proportional to] (H − 1)−2 for (H − 1) [double less-than sign] 1 (thickness of wall much less than the tube radius), and decreases [is proportional to] (H−4 for H [dbl greater-than sign] 1. The damping rate for the inviscid modes is smaller than that for the viscous wall and centre modes in a rigid tube, which have been determined previously using a singular perturbation analysis. Therefore, these are the most unstable modes in the flow through a flexible tube.

We present a spin model, namely, the Kitaev model augmented by a loop term and perturbed by an Ising Hamiltonian, and show that it exhibits both confinement-deconfinement transitions from spin liquid to antiferromagnetic/spin-chain/ferromagnetic phases and topological quantum phase transitions between gapped and gapless spin-liquid phases. We develop a fermionic resonating-valence-bonds (RVB) mean-field theory to chart out the phase diagram of the model and estimate the stability of its spin-liquid phases, which might be relevant for attempts to realize the model in optical lattices and other spin systems. We present an analytical mean-field theory to study the confinement-deconfinement transition for large coefficient of the loop term and show that this transition is first order within such mean-field analysis in this limit. We also conjecture that in some other regimes, the confinement-deconfinement transitions in the model, predicted to be first order within the mean-field theory, may become second order via a defect condensation mechanism. Finally, we present a general classification of the perturbations to the Kitaev model on the basis of their effect on it's spin correlation functions and derive a necessary and sufficient condition, within the regime of validity of perturbation theory, for the spin correlators to exhibit a long-ranged power-law behavior in the presence of such perturbations. Our results reproduce those of Tikhonov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 067203 (2011)] as a special case.

A numerical study of conjugate natural convection and surface radiation in a horizontal hexagonal sheath housing 19 solid heat generating rods with cladding and argon as the fill gas, is performed. The natural convection in the sheath is driven by the volumetric heat generation in the solid rods. The problem is solved using the FLUENT CFD code. A correlation is obtained to predict the maximum temperature in the rod bundle for different pitch-to-diameter ratios and heat generating rates. The effective thermal conductivity is related to the heat generation rate, maximum temperature and the sheath temperature. Results are presented for the dimensionless maximum temperature, Rayleigh number and the contribution of radiation with changing emissivity, total wattage and the pitch-to-diameter ratio. In the simulation of a larger system that contains a rod bundle, the effective thermal conductivity facilitates simplified modelling of the rod bundle by treating it as a solid of effective thermal conductivity. The parametric studies revealed that the contribution of radiation can be 38-65% of the total heat generation, for the parameter ranges chosen. Data for critical Rayleigh number above which natural convection comes into effect is also presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present planforms of line plumes formed on horizontal surfaces in turbulent convection, along with the length of line plumes measured from these planforms, in a six decade range of Rayleigh numbers (10(5) < Ra < 10(11)) and at three Prandtl numbers (Pr = 0.7, 5.2, 602). Using geometric constraints on the relations for the mean plume spacings, we obtain expressions for the total length of near-wall plumes on horizontal surfaces in turbulent convection. The plume length per unit area (L(p)/A), made dimensionless by the near-wall length scale in turbulent convection (Z(w)), remains constant for a given fluid. The Nusselt number is shown to be directly proportional to L(p)H/A for a given fluid layer of height H. The increase in Pr has a weak influence in decreasing L(p)/A. These expressions match the measurements, thereby showing that the assumption of laminar natural convection boundary layers in turbulent convection is consistent with the observed total length of line plumes. We then show that similar relationships are obtained based on the assumption that the line plumes are the outcome of the instability of laminar natural convection boundary layers on the horizontal surfaces.

Use of some new planes such as the R-x, R2-x (where R represents in the n-dimensional phase space, the radius vector from the origin to any point on the trajectory described by the system) is suggested for analysis of nonlinear systems of any kind. The stability conditions in these planes are given. For easy understanding of the method, the transformation from the phase plane to the R-x, R2-x planes is brought out for second-order systems. In general, while these planes serve as useful as the phase plane, they have proved to be simpler in determining quickly the general behavior of certain classes of second-order nonlinear systems. A chart and a simple formula are suggested to evaluate time easily from the R-x and R2-x trajectories, respectively. A means of solving higher-order nonlinear systems is also illustrated. Finally, a comparative study of the trajectories near singular points on the phase plane and on the new planes is made.

Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on monatomic sorbates confined within zeolite NaY to obtain the dependence of entropy and self-diffusivity on the sorbate diameter. Previously, molecular dynamics simulations by Santikary and Yashonath J. Phys. Chem. 98, 6368 (1994)], theoretical analysis by Derouane J. Catal. 110, 58 (1988)] as well as experiments by Kemball Adv. Catal. 2, 233 (1950)] found that certain sorbates in certain adsorbents exhibit unusually high self-diffusivity. Experiments showed that the loss of entropy for certain sorbates in specific adsorbents was minimum. Kemball suggested that such sorbates will have high self-diffusivity in these adsorbents. Entropy of the adsorbed phase has been evaluated from the trajectory information by two alternative methods: two-phase and multiparticle expansion. The results show that anomalous maximum in entropy is also seen as a function of the sorbate diameter. Further, the experimental observation of Kemball that minimum loss of entropy is associated with maximum in self-diffusivity is found to be true for the system studied here. A suitably scaled dimensionless self-diffusivity shows an exponential dependence on the excess entropy of the adsorbed phase, analogous to excess entropy scaling rules seen in many bulk and confined fluids. The two trajectory-based estimators for the entropy show good semiquantitative agreement and provide some interesting microscopic insights into entropy changes associated with confinement.

Three-dimensional numerical study of natural convection in a vertical channel with flush-mounted discrete heaters on opposite conductive substrate walls is carried out in the present work. Detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer effects on one wall by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall is examined. It is found that heat transfer rates on one wall are increased by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall. The thermal boundary layers on the opposite walls complement each other for enhanced heat transfer. The effects of spacing between the heated walls, spacings between heaters and substrate conductivity on flow and heat transfer are examined. Existence of optimum spacings between the heated walls for maximum heat transfer and mass flow are observed. It is found that the heat transfer and fluid flow do not follow the same optimum spacings. Mass flow rate reaches maximum value at a wall spacing greater than the spacing for maximum heat transfer. This is because the interaction of thermal boundary layers on individual walls ceases at a lower spacing before the velocity boundary layers separate each other. It is found that increased spacings between heaters reduce individual heater temperatures provided the heaters close to exit on both substrates avail sufficient substrate potions on the exit side. Insufficient substrate portions between the exit heaters and the exit cause abnormal local temperature rise in the exit heaters which are the hottest ones among all the heaters. Optimal heater spacings exist for minimum hottest heater temperature rise. Correlations are presented for dimensionless mass flow rate, temperature maximum, and average Nusselt number.

Laminar natural convection between two coaxial vertical rectangular cylinders is numerically studied in this work. The outer cylinder is connected with vertical rectangular inlet and outlet pipes. The inner cylinder dissipates volumetric heat. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics between the cylinders are analyzed in detail for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer rates on the individual faces of the inner cylinder are reported. The bottom face of the inner cylinder is found to associate with much higher heat rates than those of the other faces. The average Nusselt number on bottom face is more than 2.5 times of the Nusselt number averaged on all the faces. At a given elevation, local Nusselt number on the inner cylinder faces increases towards cylinder edges. The effect of thermal condition of the walls of outer cylinder, inlet and outlet on the natural convection is analyzed. The thermal condition shows strong qualitative and quantitative impact on the fluid flow and heat transfer. The variation of induced flow rate, dimensionless maximum temperature and average Nusselt numbers with Grashof number is studied. Correlations for dimensionless buoyancy-induced mass flow rate and temperature maximum are presented. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Laminar natural convection in a series of thermally interacting cavities is numerically studied. Each cavity consists of a conducting bottom wall with a surface mounted heater. The side walls of the cavities are isothermally cooled. Each cavity thermally interacts with its adjacent cavities through the conducting walls. Flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied in detail for various Rayleigh numbers. The convection characteristics in multiple cavities are compared with those in single independent cavity. The thermal interaction between the cavities results in lower temperatures compared with those in independent cavities. While heat is rejected into the adjacent upper cavity through some portion of the conducting wall, heat is received from the adjacent cavity through the remaining portion of the wall. The influence of substrate conductivity on heat exchange between adjacent cavities are examined. Substrate conductivity shows strong effect on temperature distribution. When cooling at both vertical sides is changed to one side cooling, the heat transfer characteristics are changed drastically and many interesting flow features are observed. Effects of cavity aspect ratio is studied and higher heat transfer rates are observed at higher aspect ratios. Correlations for dimensionless temperature maximum and average Nusselt number are presented in terms of Rayleigh number.

Pre-vaporization and pre-mixing are the two main features of LPP type of combustor that operate on liquid fuels. The pre-vaporization length scale is one of its most important design parameters. In this study, the goal is to put forward a simulation based correlation for fuel vaporization performance as a function of dimensionless parameters for crossflow type of injections. Two types of fuels are studied here: jet-A and one of its potential biofuel substitutes, RME. Different sets of spray simulations are considered for crossflow type of injections. Correlations are provided for both jet-A and RME's vaporization performance as a function of non-dimensional inlet air temperature, fuel/air momentum flux ratio and normalized spray traverse distance. Three pi-electron rich fluorescent supramolecular polymers (1-3) have been synthesized incorporating 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol groups in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling. They were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1, C-13), ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses 1 = 1( 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene; 2 = 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) anthracene; 3 = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(2methyl- 3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene]. Single crystal structures of 1-3 indicated that the incorporation of hydroxy (-OH) groups on the peripheral of the fluorophores helps them to self-associate into an infinite supramolecular polymeric network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the adjacent discrete fluorophore units. All these compounds showed fluorescence characteristics in chloroform solution due to the extended pi-conjugation and were used as selective fluorescent sensors for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics. The changes in photophysical properties of fluorophores (1-3) upon complex formation with electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives were studied in chloroform solution by using fluorescence spectroscopy. All these fluorophores showed the largest quenching response with moderate selectivity for nitroaromatics over various other electron deficient/ rich aromatic compounds tested (Chart 1). Analysis of the fluorescence titration profile of 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3butyn- 2-ol) anthracene fluorophore (2) with 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene/ 2,4-dinitrotoluene provided evidence that this particular fluorophore detects nitroaromatics in the nanomolar range 2.0 ppb for TNT, 13.7 ppb for DNT]. Moreover, sharp visual color change was observed upon mixing nitroaromatic (DNT) with fluorophores (1-3) both in solution as well as in solid phase. Furthermore, the vapor-phase sensing study of thin film of fluorophores (1-3) showed efficient quenching responses for DNT and this sensing process is reproducible. Selective fluorescence quenching response including a sharp visual color change for nitroaromatics make these tested fluorophores (1-3) as potential sensors for nitroaromatic compounds with a detection limit of ppb level.

This paper reports an experimental investigation of oscillating temperature field beneath a single isolated nucleation site using a non-invasive TLC (thermochromic liquid crystal) based thermography technique. Empirical correlations are presented to demonstrate the influence of system pressure and wall heat flux on different ebullition characteristics in the nucleate pool boiling regime of refrigerant R-134a. TLC transient response and two-phase flow structure are captured using synchronized, high resolution imaging. It is observed that the area of influence of nucleation site exhibits a two-part distinct transient behavior during the bubble growth period and broadens to a maximum of 1.57 times the bubble diameter at the instant of bubble departure. This is accompanied by a sharp fall of 2.5 degrees C in the local excess temperature at the nucleation site, which results in momentary augmentation (similar to 40%) in the local heat transfer coefficient at the nucleation origin. The enhanced heat transfer rate observed during the bubble peel-off event is primarily due to transient micro-convection in the wake of the retreating bubble. Further, the results indicate that a slight increase in system pressure from 813.6 to 882.5 kPa has no considerable effect on either the wall superheat or the overall heat transfer coefficient and ebullition frequency. In addition, correlations have been obtained for bubble Reynolds number, Jackob number and the dimensionless bubble generation frequency in terms of modified boiling number.
