Theoretical analysis of internal frequency doubling in actively mode locked broadband solid state lasers is presented. The analysis is used to study the dependence of mode locked pulsewidth on the second harmonic conversion efficiency, the modulation depth, and the tuning element bandwidth in an AM mode locked Ti: sapphire laser. The results are presented in the form of graphs.

We develop new scheduling algorithms for the IEEE 802.16d OFDMA/TDD based broadband wireless access system, in which radio resources of both time and frequency slots are dynamically shared by all users. Our objective is to provide a fair and efficient allocation to all the users to satisfy their quality of service.

We propose F-norm of the cross-correlation part of the array covariance matrix as a measure of correlation between the impinging signals and study the performance of different decorrelation methods in the broadband case using this measure. We first show that dimensionality of the composite signal subspace, defined as the number of significant eigenvectors of the source sample covariance matrix, collapses in the presence of multipath and the spatial smoothing recovers this dimensionality. Using an upper bound on the proposed measure, we then study the decorrelation of the broadband signals with spatial smoothing and the effect of spacing and directions of the sources on the rate of decorrelation with progressive smoothing. Next, we introduce a weighted smoothing method based on Toeplitz-block-Toeplitz (TBT) structuring of the data covariance matrix which decorrelates the signals much faster than the spatial smoothing. Computer simulations are included to demonstrate the performance of the two methods.

The idea of ubiquity and seamless connectivity in networks is gaining more importance in recent times because of the emergence of mobile devices with added capabilities like multiple interfaces and more processing abilities. The success of ubiquitous applications depends on how effectively the user is provided with seamless connectivity. In a ubiquitous application, seamless connectivity encompasses the smooth migration of a user between networks and providing him/her with context based information automatically at all times. In this work, we propose a seamless connectivity scheme in the true sense of ubiquitous networks by providing smooth migration to a user along with providing information based on his/her contexts automatically without re-registration with the foreign network. The scheme uses Ubi-SubSystems(USS) and Soft-Switches(SS) for maintaining the ubiquitous application resources and the users. The scheme has been tested by considering the ubiquitous touring system with several sets of tourist spots and users.

Abstract—A new breed of processors like the Cell Broadband Engine, the Imagine stream processor and the various GPU processors emphasize data-level parallelism (DLP) and threadlevel parallelism (TLP) as opposed to traditional instructionlevel parallelism (ILP). This allows them to achieve order-ofmagnitude improvements over conventional superscalar processors for many workloads. However, it is unclear as to how much parallelism of these types exists in current programs. Most earlier studies have largely concentrated on the amount of ILP in a program, without differentiating DLP or TLP. In this study, we investigate the extent of data-level parallelism available in programs in the MediaBench suite. By packing instructions in a SIMD fashion, we observe reductions of up to 91 % (84 % on average) in the number of dynamic instructions, indicating a very high degree of DLP in several applications. Potassium titanyl phosphate single crystals were irradiated with 48 MeV lithium ions at fluences varying from 5×1012 to 1016 ions/cm2. The defects created in the crystal have been characterized using x-ray rocking curve measurements, optical transmittance, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. From x-ray rocking curve studies, the full width at half maximum for the irradiated samples was observed to increase, indicating lattice strain caused by the energetic ions. Optical transparency of these samples was found to decrease upon irradiation. The irradiated samples exhibited a broadband luminescence in the 700–900 nm region, for fluences above 5×1013 ions/cm2. The results indicate that ion-beam-induced optical effects in KTiOPO4 single crystals are very similar to the ones obtained for crystals with “gray tracks,” which are attributed to the electronic transitions in the Ti3+ levels.

A new method of network analysis, a generalization in several different senses of existing methods and applicable to all networks for which a branch-admittance (or impedance) matrix can be formed, is presented. The treatment of network determinants is very general and essentially four terminal rather than three terminal, and leads to simple expressions based on trees of a simple graph associated with the network and matrix, and involving products of low-order, usually(2 times 2)determinants of tree-branch admittances, in addition to tree-branch products as in existing methods. By comparison with existing methods, the total number of trees and of tree pairs is usually considerably reduced, and this fact, together with an easy method of tree-pair sign determination which is also presented, makes the new method simpler in general. The method can be very easily adapted, by the use of infinite parameters, to accommodate ideal transformers, operational amplifiers, and other forms of network constraint; in fact, is thought to be applicable to all linear networks.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. The design of a three‐stage high‐gain amplifier for laboratory use in audiofrequency investigations is described. Four‐electrode tubes are used as screen‐grid amplifiers and an amplification of the order of 200 per stage is obtained. The inaccuracy of McDonald's formula for calculation of stage‐gain has been pointed out. The gain‐frequency characteristics are given for power as well as voltage amplification. It is shown that extreme care is necessary in the design of shielding to obtain high‐voltage amplification of the order of 120 decibels as obtained in this three‐stage amplifier.

Approximate closed-form expressions for the propagation characteristics of a microstrip line with a symmetrical aperture in its ground plane are reported in this article. Well-known expressions for the characteristic impedance of a regular microstrip line have been modified to incorporate the effect of this aperture. The accuracy of these expressions for various values of substrate thickness, permittivity and line width has been studied in detail by fullwave simulations. This has been further verified by measurements. These expressions are easier to compute and find immense use in the design of broadband filters, tight couplers, power dividers, transformers, delay lines, and matching circuits. A broadband filter with aperture in ground plane is demonstrated in this article. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2012.

This paper is concerned with the optimal flow control of an ATM switching element in a broadband-integrated services digital network. We model the switching element as a stochastic fluid flow system with a finite buffer, a constant output rate server, and a Gaussian process to characterize the input, which is a heterogeneous set of traffic sources. The fluid level should be maintained between two levels namely b1 and b2 with b1

This paper presents analysis and design of multilayer ultra wide band (UWB) power splitter suitable for wireless communications. An UWB power splitter is designed in suspended substrate stripline medium. The quarter wave transformer in the conventional Wilkinson power divider is replaced by broadside coupled lines to achieve tight coupling for broadband operation. The UWB power splitter is analyzed using circuit models of coupled lines and full wave simulator. Experimental results of 3dB power splitter designed using the proposed structure have been verified against the results from circuit simulation and full wave simulation. The return loss is better than 12 dB across the band 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz. Size of the power splitter is 30mm× 20mm×6.38mm.

We report novel resistor grid network based space cloth for application in single and multi layer radar absorbers. The space cloth is analyzed and relations are derived for the sheet resistance in terms of the resistor in the grid network. Design curves are drawn using MATLAB and the space cloth is analyzed using HFSS™ software in a Salisbury screen for S, C and X bands. Next, prediction and simulation results for a three layer Jaumann absorber using square grid resistor network with a Radar Cross Section Reduction (RCSR) of -15 dB over C, X and Ku bands is reported. The simulation results are encouraging and have led to the fabrication of prototype broadband radar absorber and experimental work is under progress.

Even though satellite observations are the most effective means to gather global information in a short span of time, the challenges in this field still remain over continental landmass, despite most of the aerosol sources being land-based. This is a hurdle in global and regional aerosol climate forcing assessment. Retrieval of aerosol properties over land is complicated due to irregular terrain characteristics and the high and largely uncertain surface reflection which acts as `noise' to the much smaller amount of radiation scattered by aerosols, which is the `signal'. In this paper, we describe a satellite sensor the - `Aerosol Satellite (AEROSAT)', which is capable of retrieving aerosols over land with much more accuracy and reduced dependence on models. The sensor, utilizing a set of multi-spectral and multi-angle measurements of polarized components of radiation reflected from the Earth's surface, along with measurements of thermal infrared broadband radiance, results in a large reduction of the `noise' component (compared to the `signal). A conceptual engineering model of AEROSAT has been designed, developed and used to measure the land-surface features in the visible spectral band. Analysing the received signals using a polarization radiative transfer approach, we demonstrate the superiority of this method. It is expected that satellites carrying sensors following the AEROSAT concept would be `self-sufficient', to obtain all the relevant information required for aerosol retrieval from its own measurements.
