A ratio transformer method suitable for the measurement of the dielectric constant of highly conducting liquids is described. The resistance between the two plates of the capacitor can be as low as 2 k Omega . In this method variations in this low resistance will not give any error in capacitance measurement. One of the features of this method is the simplicity in balancing the resistance, using a LDR (light dependent resistor), without influencing the independent capacitance measurement. The ratio transformer enables the ground capacitances to be eliminated. The change in leakage inductance of the ratio transformer while changing the ratios is also taken into account. The capacitance of a dielectric cell of the order of 50 pF can be measured from 1000 Hz to 100 kHz with a resolution of 0.06 pF. The electrode polarisation problem is also discussed.

A purified antitumor protein from the proteinaceous crystal of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. thuringiensis inhibits the growth of Yoshida ascites sarcoma both in vivo and in vitro. Exogenous respiration of the tumor cells was unaffected by the protein at a concentration as high as 500 µg/ml. The antitumor protein inhibits the uptake and incorporation of labeled precursors into macromolecules. However, the ratio of incorporation over uptake is not affected by the protein. Further, the protein brings about the leakage of 260-nm-absorbing material, proteins, and 32P-labeled cellular constituents from the Yoshida ascites sarcoma cells. The results show that the action of the antitumor protein appears to alter the cellular permeability of the tumor cells.

During preimplantation development, embryos of many species are known to express up to five isoforms of the facilitative glucose transporter proteins (GLUT). Development of hamster blastocysts is inhibited by glucose. We therefore investigated GLUT isoform and insulin receptor (IR) expression in hamster preimplantation embryos cultured in glucose-free medium from the 8-cell stage onwards. We show that GLUT1, 3 and 8 mRNA are constitutively expressed from the 8-cell to the blastocyst stage. The IR is expressed from the morula stage onwards. Messenger RNA of the insulin-responsive GLUT4 was not detected at any stage. GLUT1 and 3 were localised by immunocytochemistry. GLUT1 was expressed in both embryoblast and trophoblast, in the latter, mainly in basal and lateral membranes directed towards the blastocoel. and embryoblast. GLUT3 was exclusively localised in the apical. membrane of trophoblast cells. We show that hamster preimplantation embryos express several GLUT isoforms thus closely resembling embryos of other mammalian species. Despite endogenous IR expression, the insulin-sensitive isoform GLUT4 was not expressed, indicating that the insulin-mediated glucose uptake known from classical insulin target cells may not be relevant for hamster blastocysts.

In this paper, we present Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Managed 256 x 64 SRAM block in 65nm technology, for frequency ranging from 100MHz to 1GHz. The total energy is minimized for any operating frequency in the above range and leakage energy is minimized during standby mode. Since noise margin of SRAM cell deteriorates at low voltages, we propose Static Noise Margin improvement circuitry, which symmetrizes the SRAM cell by controlling the body bias of pull down NMOS transistor. We used a 9T SRAM cell that isolates Read and Hold Noise Margin and has less leakage. We have implemented an efficient technique of pushing address decoder into zigzag-super-cut-off in stand-by mode without affecting its performance in active mode of operation. The Read Bit Line (RBL) voltage drop is controlled and pre-charge of bit lines is done only when needed for reducing power wastage.

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). The lead based ferroelectric PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT), (Pb0.90La0.10)TiO3 (PLT10) and (Pb0.80La0.20)TiO3 (PLT20) thin films, prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique, were studied for their response to the 70 MeV oxygen ion irradiation. The dielectric analysis, capacitance-voltage (C- V) and DC leakage current measurements were performed before and after the irradiation to high-energy oxygen ions. The irradiation produced considerable changes in the dielectric, C-V, leakage characteristics and induced some amount of amorphization. The PZT films showed partial recrystallization after a thermal annealing at 400 degrees C for 10 min. The phase transition temperature [T-c] of PLT20 increased from 115 degrees C to 120 degrees C. The DC conductivity measurements showed a shift in the onset of non-linear conduction region. The current density decreased by two orders of magnitude after irradiation. After annealing the irradiated films at a temperature of 400 degrees C for 10 min, the films partially regained the dielectric and electrical properties. The results are discussed in terms of the irradiation-induced amorphization, the pinning of the ferroelectric domains by trapped charges and the thermal annealing of the defects generated during the irradiation. Polymeric outdoor insulators are being increasingly used for electrical power transmission and distribution in the recent years. One of the current topics of interest for the power transmission community is the aging of such outdoor polymeric insulators. A few research groups are carrying out aging studies at room temperature with wet period as an integral part of multistress aging cycle as specified by IEC standards. However, aging effect due to dry conditions alone at elevated temperatures and electric stress in the presence of radiation environment has probably not been explored. It is interesting to study and understand the insulator performance under dry conditions where wet periods are either rare or absent and to estimate the extent of aging caused by multiple stresses. This paper deals with the long-term accelerated multistress aging on full-scale 11 kV distribution class composite silicone rubber insulators. In order to assess the long-term synergistic effect of electric stress, temperature and UV radiation on insulators, they are subjected to accelerated aging in a specially designed multistress-aging chamber for 3800 hours. All the stresses are applied at an accelerated level. Using a data acquisition system developed for the work, leakage current has been monitored in LabVIEW environment. Chemical changes due to degradations have been studied using Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis, Scanning Electron Microscope and Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Periodically different parameters like low molecular weight (LMW) molecular content, hydrophobicity, leakage current and surface morphology were monitored. The aging study is under progress and only intermediate results are presented in this paper.

Traditionally, an instruction decoder is designed as a monolithic structure that inhibit the leakage energy optimization. In this paper, we consider a split instruction decoder that enable the leakage energy optimization. We also propose a compiler scheduling algorithm that exploits instruction slack to increase the simultaneous active and idle duration in instruction decoder. The proposed compiler-assisted scheme obtains a further 14.5% reduction of energy consumption of instruction decoder over a hardware-only scheme for a VLIW architecture. The benefits are 17.3% and 18.7% in the context of a 2-clustered and a 4-clustered VLIW architecture respectively.

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) catalyzes the oxidation of o-diphenols to their respective quinones. The quinones autopolymerize to form dark pigments, an undesired effect. PPO is therefore the target for the development of antibrowning and antimelanization agents. A series of phenolic compounds experimentally evaluated for their binding affinity and inhibition constants were computationally docked to the active site of catechol oxidase. Docking studies suggested two distinct modes of binding, dividing the docked ligands into two groups. Remarkably, the first group corresponds to ligands determined to be substrates and the second group corresponds to reversible inhibitors. Analyses of the complexes provide structural explanations for correlating subtle changes in the position and nature of the substitutions on o-diphenols to their functional properties as substrates and inhibitors. Higher reaction rates and binding are reckoned by additional interactions of the substrates with key residues that line the hydrophobic cavity. The docking results suggest that inhibition of oxidation stems from an interaction between the aromatic carboxylic acid group and the apical His 109 of the four coordinates of the trigonal pyramidal coordination polyhedron of CuA. The spatial orientation of the hydroxyl in relation to the carboxylic group either allows a perfect fit in the substrate cavity, leading to inhibition, or because of a steric clash flips the molecule vertically, facilitating oxidation. This is the first study to explain, at the molecular level, the determinants Of substrate and inhibitor specificity of a catechol oxidase, thereby providing a platform for the design of selective inhibitors useful to both the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The first examples of stable spirodiazaselenurane and spirodiazatellurane were synthesized by oxidative spirocyclization of the corresponding diaryl selenide and telluride and were structurally characterized. X-ray crystal structures of the spirodiazaselenurane and spirodiazatellurane suggest that the structures are distorted trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) with the electronegative nitrogen atoms occupying the apical positions and two carbon atoms and the lone pair of Se/Te occupying the equatorial positions. Interestingly, the spirodiazatellurane underwent spontaneous chiral resolution during crystallization, and the absolute configurations of its enantiomers were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analyses. A detailed mechanistic study indicates that the cyclization to spirodiazaselenurane and spirodiazatellurane occurs via selenoxide and telluroxide intermediates. The chalcogenoxides cyclize to the corresponding spiro compounds in a stepwise manner via the involvement of hydroxyl chalcogenurane intermediates, and the activation energy for them spirocyclization reaction decreases in the order S > Se > Te. In addition to the synthesis, characterization, and mechanism of cyclization, the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimetic activity of the newly synthesized compounds was evaluated. These studies suggest that the tellurium compounds are more effective as GPx mimics than their selenium counterparts due to the fast oxidation of the tellurium center in the presence of peroxide and the involvement of an efficient redox cycle between the telluride and telluroxide intermediate.

The microstructural dependence of electrical properties of (Ba, Sr)TiO3(BST) thin films were studied from the viewpoint of dc and ac electrical properties. The films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique in a temperature range of 300 to 600 degrees C, inducing changes in grain size, structure, and morphology. Consequently, two different types of films were realized, of which type I, was polycrystalline, multigrained, while type II was [100] oriented possessing a densely packed fibrous microstructure. Leakage current measurements were done at elevated temperatures to provide evidence of the conduction mechanism present in these films. The results revealed a contribution from both electronic and ionic conduction. In the case of type I films, two trapping levels were identified with energies around 0.5 and 2.73 eV, which possibly originate from oxygen vacancies V-O and Ti3+ centers, respectively. These levels act as shallow and deep traps and are reflected in the current-voltage characteristics of the BST thin films. The activation energy associated with oxygen vacancy motion in this case was obtained as 1.28 eV. On the contrary, type II films showed no evidence of deep trap energy levels, while the identified activation energy associated with shallow traps was obtained as 0.38 eV. The activation energy obtained for oxygen vacancy motion in type II films was around 1.02 eV. The dc measurement results were further elucidated through ac impedance analysis, which revealed a grain boundary dominated response in type I in comparison to type II films where grain response is highlighted. A comparison of the mean relaxation time of the two films revealed three orders of magnitude higher relaxation time in the case of type I films. Due to smaller grain size in type I films the grains were considered to be completely depleted giving rise to only grain boundary response for the bulk of the film. The activation energy obtained from conductivity plots agree very well with that of dc measurements giving values 1.3 and 1.07 eV for type I and type II films, respectively. Since oxygen vacancy transport have been identified as the origin of resistance degradation in BST thin films, type I films with their higher value of activation energy for oxygen ion mobility explains the improvement in breakdown characteristics under constant high dc field stress. The role of microstructure in controlling the rate of degradation is found useful in this instance to enhance the film properties under high electric field stresses. Cuscuta stem (vines) exhibits two modes of growth—longitudinal elongation forming free-hanging vines, or coiling growth to twine around the host. The elongation zone of free-hanging vine extended up to 160 mm from the stem apex and in vivo growth rate (during 8 h of growth) was maximal in the 20-to-40-mm region. While gibberellic acid (GA3) or fusicoccin (FC) could maintain (GA3) or enhance (FC) the growth rate of apical (10 or 25 mm) segments, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (10 mgrM) induced growth only in subapical (5–160 mm) segments. In vitro growth rate induced by IAA (10 mgrM) was similar to the in vivo growth rate up to 40 mm. Thereafter, up to 100 mm, IAA induced growth rate exceeded in vivo growth. p ]Subapical segments (sim13 mm) from 5- to 40-mm regions responded to a cytokinin (BA, Z, or iP) or to low IAA (0.1 mgrM) with curved growth, whereas the segments grew straight in the presence of high IAA (10 mgrM). Curvature (measured as the angle subtended at the center of the circle of which the segment formed an arc) induced by BA and low (0.1 mgrM) IAA was greater than either added separately. Besides, segments induced to curve in BA + low-IAA solution could be made to straighten out by transferring to a solution containing high IAA (10 mgrM) with or without BA. Thus in vivo patterns of straight and coiling growth could be mimicked reversibly in vitro by adjusting the relative concentrations of cytokinin and auxin; low auxin and cytokinin induced coiling growth, whereas high auxin and cytokinin induced straight growth. p ]Beyond 40 mm, BA had no growth-promoting or curvative-inducing effect.Cuscuta vine segments thus showed sequential sensitivity to applied hormones, the apical region (0–25 mm) to GA3, the subapical (5–40 mm) region to BA and IAA and the region beyond (40–160 mm) to IAA alone.

Bismuth vanadate (BVO) thin films were fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates using pulsed laser ablation technique and investigated their structural, optical and electrical properties. The use of the indium tin oxide coated glass substrate resulted in reducing the leakage current characteristics of crystalline BVO thin films. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the monophasic nature of the post annealed (500 A degrees C/1 h) films. The atomic force microscopy indicated the homogeneous distribution of crystallites in the as-deposited films. The as-deposited and the post annealed films were almost 90% transparent (380-900 nm) as confirmed by optical transmission studies. Dielectric constant of around 52 was attained accompanied by the low dielectric loss of 0.002 at 10 kHz for post annealed films. The leakage current of the post annealed BVO films on ITO coated glass substrates measured at room temperature was 8.1 x 10(-8) A at an applied electric field of 33 kV/cm, which was lower than that of the films with platinum and SrRuO3 as the bottom electrodes.

Some wild isolates of Neurospora show microcycle conidiation in liquid culture under continuous agitation. Macroconidia from agar-grown mycelial cultures germinated in liquid and the germlings spontaneously produced conidia with no intervening mycelial phase. Three types of microcycle conidiation were seen among progeny of N. crassa Vickramam A x N. crassa a wild-type: (1) multinucleate blastoconidia produced by apical budding and septation, (2) multinucleate arthroconidia produced by holothallic septation and disarticulation of cells, and (3) uninucleate microconidia produced directly from conidiogenous cells of the germlings. Two genes were identified which control specific patterns of microcycle conidiogenesis. A single gene mcb in linkage group VR near al-3 (3.2% recombination) controls blastoconidiation. This gene is epistatic to gene mcm located in linkage group IIL, very near ro-7 (1.4%). mcm controls both microconidiation and arthroconidiation depending on temperature. Strains of genotype mcm produce microconidia almost exclusively at 18-22 degrees C, but arthroconidia with few or no microconidia at 30 degrees C. Because they result in rapid and synchronized conidiation in liquid culture, the two genes should be useful for studies of developmental gene regulation. mcm makes it possible to obtain large quantities of pure microconidia rapidly for experimentation.

The reactions of the complexes [MI2(CO)3-(NCMe)2] (M = Mo, W) with the diphosphazane ligands RN{P(OPh)2}2 (R = Me, Ph) in CH2Cl2 at room temperature afford new seven-coordinated complexes of the type [MI2(CO)3{P(OPh)2}2NR]. The molybdenum complexes are sensitive to air oxidation even in the solid state, whereas the tungsten complexes are more stable in the solid state and in solution. The structure of the tungsten complex [WI2(CO)3{P(OPh)2}2NPh] has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with the space group Pna 2(1), a = 19.372 (2) angstrom, b = 11.511 (1) angstrom, c = 15.581 (1) angstrom, and Z = 4. Full-matrix least-squares refinement with 3548 reflections (I > 2.5-sigma-(I)) led to final R and R(w) values of 0.036 and 0.034, respectively. The complex adopts a slightly distorted pentagonal-bypyramidal geometry rarely observed for such a type of complexes; two phosphorus atoms of the diphosphazane ligand, two iodine atoms, and a carbonyl group occupy the equatorial plane, and the other two carbonyl groups, the apical positions.
