Ternary L-glutamine (L-gln) copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-gln)(B)(H2O)](X) (B = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), X = 0.5SO(4)(2-), 1; B = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), X = ClO4-, 2) and [Cu(L-gln)(dpq)(ClO4)] (3) (dpq, dipyridoquinoxaline) are prepared and characterized by physicochemical methods. The DNA binding and cleavage activity of the complexes have been studied. Complexes 1-3 are structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complexes show distorted square pyramidal (4+1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid and the N, N-donor heterocyclic base bind at the basal plane with a H2O or perchlorate as the axial ligand. The crystal structures of the complexes exhibit chemically significant hydrogen bonding interactions besides showing coordination polymer formation. The complexes display a d-d electronic band in the range of 610-630 nm in aqueous-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (9:1 v/v). The quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response observed near -0.1 V versus SCE in DMF-TBAP is assignable to the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple. The binding affinity of the complexes to calf thymus (CT) DNA follows the order: 3 (dpq) > 2 (phen) >> 1 (bpy). Complexes 2 and 3 show DNA cleavage activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as a reducing agent via a mechanistic pathway forming hydroxyl radical as the reactive species. The dpq complex 3 shows efficient photoinduced DNA cleavage activity on irradiation with a monochromatic UV light of 365 nm in absence of any external reagent. The cleavage efficiency of the DNA minor groove binding complexes follows the order:3 > 2 >> 1. The dpq complex exhibits photocleavage of DNA on irradiation with visible light of 647.1 nm. Mechanistic data on the photo-induced DNA cleavage reactions reveal the involvement of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as the reactive species in a type-II pathway. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the major risk factors of cataract (loss of eye-lens transparency). The influence of UVB radiation (300 nm, 100 mu W cm(-2)) on the activity and apparent kinetic constants (K-m and V-max) of rat lens hexokinase (HK;EC2.7.1.1), phosphofructokinase (PFK;EC2.7.1.11), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH;EC1.1.1.41) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH;EC1.1.1.37) of energy metabolism has been investigated by irradiating the lens homogenate of three-and 12-month-old rats. In the three-month-old group specific activities of HK and PFK are reduced by 56 and 43 %, respectively, and there is no change in ICDH and MDH activities after a 24 h exposure. On the other hand, in the 12-month-old group the decreases are 72, 71, 24 and 16 % for HK, PFK. ICDH and MDH, respectively. UVB irradiation increases the apparent K-m of HK and PFK (in both age groups), whereas the K-m of ICDH and MDH is not altered. While the decrease in V-max of these enzymes due to UVB exposure is only marginal in three-month-old rats, it is more pronounced (significant) in 12-month-old rats. A similar decrease in enzyme activities of HK and PFK is also observe upon UVB exposure of the intact rat lens. The photoinduced changes in energy metabolism may in turn have a bearing on lens transparency, particularly at an older age.

Conductance measurements of junctions between a high- superconductor and a metallic oxide have been carried out along the a-b plane to examine the tunnel-junction spectra. For these measurements, in situ films have been grown on c-axis oriented thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique. Two distinctive energy gaps have been observed along with conductance peaks around zero bias. The analysis of zero-bias conductance and energy gap data suggests the presence of midgap states located at the centre of a finite energy gap. The results obtained are also in accordance with the d-wave nature of high- superconductors.

Ionic conductivity in (PEG)(x)LiBr systems is measured using the complex impedance method in the temperature range -20 degrees C to 100 degrees C. For x = 6 and 10, above a certain concentration dependent temperature T-c, a power law fit based on mode coupling theory is seen to better explain the data than the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) expression. Li-7 NMR linewidth measurements indicate two regions of motional narrowing, one attributable to segmental motion and the other to translational diffusion.

A defect-selective photothermal imaging system for the diagnostics of optical coatings is demonstrated. The instrument has been optimized for pump and probe parameters, detector performance, and signal processing algorithm. The imager is capable of mapping purely optical or thermal defects efficiently in coatings of low damage threshold and low absorbance. Detailed mapping of minor inhomogeneities at low pump power has been achieved through the simultaneous action of a low-noise fiber optic photothermal beam defection sensor and a common-mode-rejection demodulation (CMRD) technique. The linearity and sensitivity of the sensor have been examined theoretically and experimentally, and the signal to noise ratio improvement factor is found to be about 110 compared to a conventional bicell photodiode. The scanner is so designed that mapping of static or shock sensitive samples is possible. In the case of a sample with absolute absorptance of 3.8 x 10(-4), a change in absorptance of about 0.005 x 10(-4) has been detected without ambiguity, ensuring a contrast parameter of 760. This is about 1085% improvement over the conventional approach containing a bicell photodiode, at the same pump power. The merits of the system have been demonstrated by mapping two intentionally created damage sites in a MgF2 coating on fused silica at different excitation powers. Amplitude and phase maps were recorded for thermally thin and thick cases, and the results are compared to demonstrate a case which, in conventional imaging, would lead to a deceptive conclusion regarding the type and location of the damage. Also, a residual damage profile created by long term irradiation with high pump power density has been depicted.

Permalloy (NiFeMo) nanoparticles were fabricated by laser ablation of bulk material in water with a UV pulsed laser. Transmission electron microscope images showed that approximately spherical particles about 50 nm in diameter were formed in the ablation process. All diffraction peaks corresponding to the bulk material were present in the nanoparticles. In addition to these peaks several new peaks were observed in the nanoparticles, which were attributed to nickel oxide.

Pt ions-CeO2 interaction in Ce1-xPtxO2-delta (x=0.02) has been studied for the first time by electrochemical method combined with x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Working electrodes made of CeO2 and Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta mixed with 30% carbon are treated electrochemically between 0.0-1.2 V in potentiostatic (chronoamperometry) and potentiodynamic (cyclic voltametry) mode with reference to saturated calomel electrode. Reversible oxidation of Pt-0 to Pt2+ and Pt4+ state due to the applied positive potential is coupled to simultaneous reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ state. CeO2 reduces to CeO2-y (y=0.35) after applying 1.2 V, which is not reversible; Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta reaches a steady state with Pt2+:Pt4+ in the ratio of 0.60:0.40 and Ce4+:Ce3+ in the ratio of 0.55:0.45 giving a composition Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 at 1.2 V, which is reversible. Composition of Pt ion substituted compound is reversible between Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.95 to Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 within the potential range of 0.0-1.2 V. Thus, Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta forms a stable electrode for oxidation of H2O to O-2 unlike CeO2. A linear relation between oxidation of Pt2+ to Pt4+ with simultaneous reduction in Ce4+ to Ce3+ is observed demonstrating Pt-CeO2 metal support interaction is due to reversible Pt-0/Pt2+/Pt4+ interaction with Ce4+/Ce3+ redox couple.

Reaction between PdCl2 and 1-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazole (RaaiR') or 1-alkyl-2-(naphthyl-alpha/beta-azo)imidazole (alpha/beta-NaiR') under reflux in ethanol has isolated complexes of compositions Pd(RaaiR')(2)Cl-2 (5, 6) and Pd(alpha/beta-NaiR')(2)Cl-2 (7, 8). The X-ray structure determination of one of the molecules, Pd(alpha-NaiBz)(2)Cl-2 (7c), has reported a trans-PdCl2 configuration, and alpha-NaiBz acts as monodentate N(imidazole) donor ligand. The spectral (IR, UV-vis, H-1 NMR) data support the structure. UV light irradiation (light source: Perkin-Elmer LS 55 spectrofluorimeter, Xenon discharge lamp, lambda = 360-396 nm) in a MeCN solution of the complexes shows E-to-Z isomerization of the coordinated azoimidazole unit. The reverse transformation, Z-to-E, is very slow with visible light irradiation. Quantum yields (phi(E-Z)) of E-to-Z isomerization are calculated, and phi is lower than that of the free ligand but comparable with those of Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of the same ligand. The Z-to-E isomerization is a thermally induced process. The activation energy (E-a) of Z-to-E isomerization is calculated by controlled-temperature experimentation. cis-Pd(azoimidazole)Cl-2 complexes (azomidazole acts as N(imidazole) and N(azo) Chelating ligand) do not respond upon light irradiation, which supports the idea that the presence of noncoordinated azo-N to make free azo (-N=N-) function is important to reveal photochromic activity. DFT calculation of Pd(alpha-NaiBz)(2)Cl-2 (7c) has suggested that the HOMO of the molecule is constituted of Pd (32%) and Cl (66%), and hence photo excitation may use the energy of Pd and Cl instead of that of the photofunctional -N=N-Ar motif; thus, the rate of photoisomerization and quantum yield decrease versus the free ligand values.

[NiL2(NCS)2] (1) [L = 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine], [NiL02(NCS)2] (2) [(L0) = 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine and [NiL00 2(NCS)2] (3) [L00 = 2-(2-methylaminoethyl)pyridine] have been synthesized from solution. All the complexes possess trans geometry as is evident from solid state UV–Vis spectral study and X-ray single crystal structure analysis of complex 2 unambiguously proves trans geometry of the species.

Iron(III) complexes, (NHEt3)[Fe(III)(sal-met)(2)] and (NHEt3)[Fe(III)(sal-phe)(2)], of amino acid Schiffbase ligands, viz., N-salicylidene-L-methionine and N-salicylidene L-phenylalanine, have been prepared and their binding to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and photo-induced BSA cleavage activity have been investigated. The complexes are structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal Structures of the discrete mononuclear rnonoanionic complexes show FeN2O4 octahedral coordination geometry in which the tridentate dianionic amino acid Schiff base ligand binds through phenolate and carboxylate oxygen and imine nitrogen atoms. The imine nitrogen atoms are trans to each other. The Fe-O and Fe-N bond distances range between 1.9 and 2.1 angstrom. The sal-met complex has two pendant thiomethyl groups. The high-spin iron(III) complexes (mu(eff) similar to 5.9 mu(B)) exhibit quasi-reversible Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox process near -0.6 V vs. SCE in water. These complexes display a visible electronic hand near 480 nm in tris-HCl buffer assignable to the phenolate-to-iron(III) charge transfer transition. The water soluble complexes bind to BSA giving binding constant values of similar to 10(5) M-1. The Complexes show non-specific oxidative cleavage of BSA protein on photo-irradiation with UV-A light of 365 nm.

Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) in a poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) solution has shown the important role of pi-electron conjugation in controlling the chain conformation and assembly. By increasing the extent of conjugation from 30 to 100%, the persistence length (l(p)) increases from 20 to 66 angstrom. Moreover, a pronounced second peak in the pair distribution function has been observed in a fully conjugated chain, at larger length scales. This feature indicates that the chain segments tend to self-assemble as the conjugation along the chain increases. Xylene enhances the rigidity of the PPV backbone to yield extended structures, while tetrahydrofuran solvates the side groups to form compact coils in which the lp is much shorter.

From X-ray diffraction studies it is generally believed that B-DNA has the structural parameters n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å. However, for the first time we report that polymorphism in the B-form can be observed in DNA fibres. This was achieved by the precise control of salt and humidity in fibres and by the application of the precession method of X-ray diffraction to DNA fibres. The significant result obtained is that n = 10 is not observed for crystalline fibre patterns. In fact, n = 10 and h = 3.4 Å are not found to occur simultaneously. Instead, a range of values, n = 9.6–10.0 and h = 3.35 Å–3.41 Å is observed.

An A-DNA type double helical conformation was observed in the single crystal X-ray structure of the octamer d(G-G-T-A-T-A-C-C), 1, and its 5-bromouracil-containing analogue, 2. The structure of the isomorphous crystals (space group P61) was solved by a search technique based on packing criteria and R-factor calculations, with use of only low order data. At the present stage of refinement the R factors are 31 % for 1 and 28 % for 2 at a resolution of 2.25 A (0.225 nm). The molecules interact through their minor grooves by hydrogen bonding and base to sugar van der Waals contacts. The stable A conformation observed in the crystal may have some structural relevance to promoter regions where the T-A-T-A sequence is frequently found.

Crystals growing from solution, the vapour phase and from supercooled melt exhibit, as a rule, planar faces. The geometry and distribution of dislocations present within the crystals thus grown are strongly related to the growth on planar faces and to the different growth sectors rather than the physical properties of the crystals and the growth methods employed. As a result, many features of generation and geometrical arrangement of defects are common to extremely different crystal species. In this paper these commoner aspects of dislocation generation and configuration which permits one to predict their nature and distribution are discussed. For the purpose of imaging the defects a very versatile and widely applicable technique viz. x-ray diffraction topography is used. Growth dislocations in solution grown crystals follow straight path with strongly defined directions. These preferred directions which in most cases lie within an angle of ±15° to the growth normal depend on the growth direction and on the Burger's vector involved. The potential configuration of dislocations in the growing crystals can be evaluated using the theory developed by Klapper which is based on linear anisotropic elastic theory. The preferred line direction of a particular dislocation corresponds to that in which the dislocation energy per unit growth length is a minimum. The line direction analysis based on this theory enables one to characterise dislocations propagating in a growing crystal. A combined theoretical analysis and experimental investigation based on the above theory is presented.
