For most fluids, there exist a maximum and a minimum in the curvature of the reduced vapor pressure curve, p(r) = p(r)(T-r) (with p(r) = p/p(c) and T-r = T/T-c, p(c) and T-c being the pressure and temperature at the critical point). By analyzing National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) data on the liquid-vapor coexistence curve for 105 fluids, we find that the maximum occurs in the reduced temperature range 0.5 <= T-r <= 0.8 while the minimum occurs in the reduced temperature range 0.980 <= T-r <= 0.995. Vapor pressure equations for which d(2)p(r)/dT(r)(2) diverges at the critical point present a minimum in their curvature. Therefore, the point of minimum curvature can be used as a marker for the critical region. By using the well-known Ambrose-Walton (AW) vapor pressure equation we obtain the reduced temperatures of the maximum and minimum curvature in terms of the Pitzer acentric factor. The AW predictions are checked against those obtained from NIST data. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

By using the axisymmetric quasi-lower bound finite-element limit analysis, the bearing capacity factors N-c(p) and N-gamma q(p) have been computed for axially loaded piles, with the shaft embedded in a fully cohesive soil medium and the tip placed over cohesive frictional soil strata. The results were obtained for various combinations of L/D, phi(l), and c(l)/c(u); the subscripts l and u refer to lower and upper soil strata, respectively. The factors N-c(p) and N-gamma q(p) increase continuously with increases in L/D and phi(l); the rate of increase of N-c(p) and N-gamma q(p) with L/D, however, decreases with an increase in L/D. For c(l)/c(u) > 100, the factor N-c(p) hardly depends on L/D.

Isoniazid (isonicotinohydrazide) is an important first-line antitubercular drug that targets the InhA enzyme which synthesizes the critical component of the mycobacterial cell wall. An experimental charge-density analysis of isoniazid has been performed to understand its structural and electronic properties in the solid state. A high-resolution single-crystal X-ray intensity data has been collected at 90 K. An aspherical multipole refinement was carried out to explore the topological and electrostatic properties of the isoniazid molecule. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical charge-density calculations performed using CRYSTAL09 with the B3LYP/6-31G** method. A topological analysis of the electron density reveals that the Laplacian of electron density of the N-N bond is significantly less negative, which indicates that the charges at the b.c.p. (bond-critical point) of the bond are least accumulated, and so the bond is considered to be weak. As expected, a strong negative electrostatic potential region is present in the vicinity of the O1, N1 and N3 atoms, which are the reactive locations of the molecule. The C-H center dot center dot center dot N, C-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot N types of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions stabilize the crystal structure. The topological analysis of the electron density on hydrogen bonding shows the strength of intermolecular interactions.

Given a point set P and a class C of geometric objects, G(C)(P) is a geometric graph with vertex set P such that any two vertices p and q are adjacent if and only if there is some C is an element of C containing both p and q but no other points from P. We study G(del)(P) graphs where del is the class of downward equilateral triangles (i.e., equilateral triangles with one of their sides parallel to the x-axis and the corner opposite to this side below that side). For point sets in general position, these graphs have been shown to be equivalent to half-Theta(6) graphs and TD-Delaunay graphs. The main result in our paper is that for point sets P in general position, G(del)(P) always contains a matching of size at least vertical bar P vertical bar-1/3] and this bound is tight. We also give some structural properties of G(star)(P) graphs, where is the class which contains both upward and downward equilateral triangles. We show that for point sets in general position, the block cut point graph of G(star)(P) is simply a path. Through the equivalence of G(star)(P) graphs with Theta(6) graphs, we also derive that any Theta(6) graph can have at most 5n-11 edges, for point sets in general position. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. In our earlier communication we proposed a simple fragility determining function, (NBO]/(VmTg)-T-3), which we have now used to analyze several glass systems using available thermal data. A comparison with similar fragility determining function, Delta C-p/C-p(1), introduced by Chryssikos et al. in their investigation of lithium borate glasses has also been performed and found to be more convenient quantity for discussing fragilities. We now propose a new function which uses both Delta C-p and Delta T and which gives a numerical fragility parameter, F whose value lies between 0 and 1 for glass forming liquids. F can be calculated through the use of measured thermal parameters Delta C-p, C-p(1), T-g and T-m. Use of the new fragility values in reduced viscosity equation reproduces the whole range of viscosity curves of the Angell plot. The reduced viscosity equation can be directly compared with the Adam-Gibbs viscosity equation and a heat capacity function can be formulated which reproduces satisfactorily the Delta C-p versus In(T-r) curves and hence the configurational entropy. Background: Coats plus syndrome is an autosomal recessive, pleiotropic, multisystem disorder characterized by retinal telangiectasia and exudates, intracranial calcification with leukoencephalopathy and brain cysts, osteopenia with predisposition to fractures, bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension. It is caused by compound heterozygous mutations in the CTC1 gene. Case presentation: We encountered a case of an eight-year old boy from an Indian family with manifestations of Coats plus syndrome along with an unusual occurrence of dextrocardia and situs inversus. Targeted resequencing of the CTC1 gene as well as whole exome sequencing (WES) were conducted in this family to identify the causal variations. The identified candidate variations were screened in ethnicity matched healthy controls. The effect of CTC1 variation on telomere length was assessed using Southern blot. A novel homozygous missense mutation c.1451A > C (p.H484P) in exon 9 of the CTC1 gene and a rare 3'UTR known dbSNP variation (c.*556 T > C) in HES7 were identified as the plausible candidates associated with this complex phenotype of Coats plus and dextrocardia. This CTC1 variation was absent in the controls and we also observed a reduced telomere length in the affected individual's DNA, suggesting its likely pathogenic nature. The reported p.H484P mutation is located in the N-terminal 700 amino acid regionthat is important for the binding of CTC1 to ssDNA through its two OB domains. WES data also showed a rare homozygous missense variation in the TEK gene in the affected individual. Both HES7 and TEK are targets of the Notch signaling pathway. Conclusions: This is the first report of a genetically confirmed case of Coats plus syndrome from India. By means of WES, the genetic variations in this family with unique and rare complex phenotype could be traced effectively. We speculate the important role of Notch signaling in this complex phenotypic presentation of Coats plus syndrome and dextrocardia. The present finding will be useful for genetic diagnosis and carrier detection in the family and for other patients with similar disease manifestations.

Glass formation has been examined in the system 15PbO.xPbCl(2).(85-x)PbBr2 (where 0 <= x <= 25)where the PbO concentration is kept constant while PbCl2 and PbBr2 concentrations are varied. The glasses have been examined using thermal and spectroscopic techniques. T-8, Delta C-p, refractive index, optical basicity have been found to remain unaffected by the composition which is a curious feature of these glasses. It is found that there is a wide infrared window available for use in the investigated glasses. The IR window extends from 1000 to 1500 cm(-1) and in glasses where PbCl2 is less than 20 mol%, the window extends up to 2260 cm(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) revealed that the 4f(5/2) and 4f(7/2) peaks due to f-level transitions have a constant difference in energies, but with energy and FWHM values that varying sensitively and systematically with composition. The observations are discussed and suitable explanations are provided.

Detailed investigation of the chemical states and local atomic environment of Ni and Zn in the two-phase composites of Zn1-xNixO/NiO was reported. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of both Ni-2p and Zn-2p revealed the existence of a doublet with spin-orbit splitting approximate to 17.9 and 23.2eV, respectively confirming the divalent oxidation state of both Ni and Zn. However, the samples fabricated under oxygen-rich conditions exhibit significant difference in the binding energy approximate to 18.75eV between the 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 states of Ni. The shift in the satellite peaks of Ni-2p with increasing the Ni composition x within the Zn1-xNixO/NiO matrix signifies the attenuation of nonlocal screening because of reduced site occupancy of two adjacent Zn ions. The temperature dependence of X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a large distortion in the axial-rhombohedral angle for oxygen-rich NiO. Conversely, no significant distortion was noticed in the NiO system present as a secondary phase within Zn1-xNixO. Nevertheless, the unit-cell volume of both wurtzite h.c.p. Zn1-xNixO and f.c.c. NiO exhibits an anomalous behavior between 150 and 300 degrees C. The origin of such unusual change in the unit-cell volume was discussed in terms of oxygen stoichiometry.
