The self-similar solution of the unsteady laminar compressible boundary-layer flow with variable properties at a three-dimensional stagnation point with mass transfer has been obtained when the free-stream velocity varies inversely as a linear function of time. The resulting ordinary differential equations have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The results are found to be strongly dependent on the parameter characterizing the unsteadiness in the free-stream velocity. The velocity profiles show some features not encountered in steady flows.

The kinetics of iron(II1) extraction by bis(Zethylhexy1) phosphate (HDEHP, HA) in kerosene from sulfuric acid solutions has been studied in a liquid-liquid laminar jet reactor. The contact time of the interface in this reacting device is of the same order of magnitude as the surface renewal time in dispersion mixing and much less than that obtained in the relatively quiescent condition of the Lewis cell. Yet the analysis of the data in this study suggested a rate-controlling step involving surface saturation quite in conformity with that obtained in the Lewis cell and not with that in dispersion mixing as reported in the literature. Further, the mechanism suggested a weaker dependence of the rate on hydrogen ion concentration which was reported by other workers.

The problem of decaying states and resonances is examined within the framework of scattering theory in a rigged Hilbert space formalism. The stationary free,''in,'' and ''out'' eigenvectors of formal scattering theory, which have a rigorous setting in rigged Hilbert space, are considered to be analytic functions of the energy eigenvalue. The value of these analytic functions at any point of regularity, real or complex, is an eigenvector with eigenvalue equal to the position of the point. The poles of the eigenvector families give origin to other eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian: the singularities of the ''out'' eigenvector family are the same as those of the continued S matrix, so that resonances are seen as eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian with eigenvalue equal to their location in the complex energy plane. Cauchy theorem then provides for expansions in terms of ''complete'' sets of eigenvectors with complex eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. Applying such expansions to the survival amplitude of a decaying state, one finds that resonances give discrete contributions with purely exponential time behavior; the background is of course present, but explicitly separated. The resolvent of the Hamiltonian, restricted to the nuclear space appearing in the rigged Hilbert space, can be continued across the absolutely continuous spectrum; the singularities of the continuation are the same as those of the ''out'' eigenvectors. The free, ''in'' and ''out'' eigenvectors with complex eigenvalues and those corresponding to resonances can be approximated by physical vectors in the Hilbert space, as plane waves can. The need for having some further physical information in addition to the specification of the total Hamiltonian is apparent in the proposed framework. The formalism is applied to the Lee–Friedrichs model and to the scattering of a spinless particle by a local central potential. The crystal structures of three pentapeptide fragments of suzukacillin-A have been determined. Boc-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-Val-OMe (peptide 1–5) adopts a distorted helical conformation, stabilized by three intramolecular hydrogen bonds (two 5→1, one 4→1). Boc-Ala-Aib-Ala-Aib-Aib-OMe (peptide 6–10) and Boc-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-OMe (peptide 16–20) adopt 310 helical structures stabilized by three and two 4→1 intramolecular hydrogen bonds, respectively. These structures provide substantial support for a largely helical conformation for the suzukacillin membrane channel.

Reaction of lead nitrate and 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid under hydrothermal conditions carried out at different temperatures and pH yields a hybrid Compound Pb-2(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate)2, 1, and a three-dimensional coordination polymer Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate), It. The two-dimensional double-layered compound, 1, with two-dimensional inorganic connectivities and one-dimensional organic connectivity is novel since hybrid compounds formed by 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid are uncommon. The lead atoms in I have holodirectional geometry, while those in II show hemidirectionality. In both I and II, 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid acts as a multi-dentate ligand with both the carboxylic groups and the amine group taking part in coordination. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. We analyze the relationship between tripartite entanglement and genuine tripartite nonlocality for three-qubit pure states in the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger class. We consider a family of states known as the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states and derive an analytical expression relating the three-tangle, which quantifies tripartite entanglement, to the Svetlichny inequality, which is a Bell-type inequality that is violated only when all three qubits are nonlocally correlated. We show that states with three-tangle less than 1/2 do not violate the Svetlichny inequality. On the other hand, a set of states known as the maximal slice states does violate the Svetlichny inequality, and exactly analogous to the two-qubit case, the amount of violation is directly related to the degree of tripartite entanglement. We discuss further interesting properties of the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and maximal slice states.

The unsteady laminar compressible three-dimensional stagnation-point boundary-layer flow with variable properties has been studied when the velocity of the incident stream, mass transfer and wall temperature vary arbitrarily with time. The second-order unsteady boundary-layer equations for all the effects have been derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Both nodal and saddle point flows as well as cold and hot wall cases have been considered. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Computations have been carried out for an accelerating stream, a decelerating stream and a fluctuating stream. The results indicate that the unsteady free stream velocity distributions, the nature of the stagnation point, the mass transfer, the wall temperature and the variation of the density-viscosity product across the boundary significantly affect the skin friction and heat transfer. The variation of the wall temperature with time strongly affects the heat transfer whereas its effect is comparatively less on skin friction. Suction increases the skin friction and heat transfer but injection does the opposite. The skin friction in the x direction due to the combined effects of first- and second-order boundary layers is less than the skin-friction in the x direction due to the first-order boundary layers for all the parameters. The overall skin friction in the z direction and heat transfer are more or less than the first-order boundary layers depending upon the values of the various parameters.

A new four-hole cylindrical cantilever probe is described which could be used for three-dimensional flow surveys. The probe is more compact than the usual cylindrical type allowing for closer approach to a boundary. The probe is robust and gives good reproducibility. It can be used for a wide range of pitch angle. Review of Scientific Instruments is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

We study the tunneling density of states (TDOS) for a junction of three Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires. We show that there are fixed points which allow for the enhancement of the TDOS, which is unusual for Luttinger liquids. The distance from the junction over which this enhancement occurs is of the order of x=v/(2 omega), where v is the plasmon velocity and omega is the bias frequency. Beyond this distance, the TDOS crosses over to the standard bulk value independent of the fixed point describing the junction. This finite range of distances opens up the possibility of experimentally probing the enhancement in each wire individually.

The n=3 member of the Bi1.5Pb0.5 (Ca, Sr) n+1CunO2n+4+δ system has been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. High-Tc superconductivity in the n=3 member has been established by resistivity, AC susceptibility and microwave absorption measurements. It has a Tc of not, vert, similar 105K compared to a Tc of not, vert, similar 82K of the corresponding n=2 member.

A three-dimensional analysis is presented for the bending problem of finite thick plates with through-the-thickness cracks. A general solution is obtained for Navier's equations of the theory of elasticity. It is found that the in-plane stresses and the transverse normal stress at the crack front are singular with an inverse square root singularity, while the transverse shear stresses are of the order of unity. Results from a numerical study indicate that the stress intensity factor, which varies across the thickness, is influenced by the thickness ratio in a significant manner. Results from a parametric study and those from a comparative study with existing finite element values are presented.

The unsteady laminar incompressible three-dimensional boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a flat plate with an attached cylinder have been studied when the free stream velocity components and wall temperature vary inversely as linear and quadratic functions of time, respectively. The governing semisimilar partial differential equations with three independent variables have been solved numerically using a quasilinear finite-difference scheme. The results indicate that the skin friction increases with parameter λ which characterizes the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity and the streamwise distance Image , but the heat transfer decreases. However, the skin friction and heat transfer are found to change little along Image . The effect of the Prandtl number on the heat transfer is found to be more pronounced when λ is small, whereas the effect of the dissipation parameter is more pronounced when λ is comparatively large.

Nanocrystalline Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) of 8-10 nm sizes have been synthesized by hydrothermal method using melamine as complexing agent. Compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and their structures have been refined by the Rietveld method. The compounds crystallize in fluorite structure and the composition is Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 where Ru is in +4 state and Ce is in mixed-valence (+3, +4) state. Substitution of Ru4+ ion in CeO2 activated the lattice oxygen. Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 reversibly releases 0.22[O] and 0.42[O] for x = 0.05 and 0.10, respectively, which is higher than the maximumpossible OSC of 0.22 [O] observed for Ce0.50Zr0.50O2. Utilization of Higher OSC of Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) is also reflected in terms of low-temperature CO oxidation with these catalysts, both in the presence and absence of feed oxygen. The Ru4+ ion acts as an active center for reducing molecules (CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'') and oxide ion vacancy acts as an active center for O-2 and NO, leading to low-temperature NO conversion to N-2. Thus due to Ru4+ ion, Ce1-xRuxO2-delta is not just a high oxygen storage material but also shows high activity toward CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'' oxidation, and NO reduction by CO at low temperature with high N-2 selectivity for three-way catalysis.
