Bacillus subtilis BacB is an oxidase that is involved in the production of the antibiotic bacilysin. This protein contains two double-stranded beta-helix (cupin) domains fused in a compact arrangement. BacB crystallizes in three crystal forms under similar crystallization conditions. An interesting observation was that a slight perturbation of the crystallization droplet resulted in the nucleation of a different crystal form. An X-ray absorption scan of BacB suggested the presence of cobalt and iron in the crystal. Here, a comparative analysis of the different crystal forms of BacB is presented in an effort to identify the basis for the different lattices. It is noted that metal ions mediating interactions across the asymmetric unit dominate the different packing arrangements. Furthermore, a normalized B-factor analysis of all the crystal structures suggests that the solvent-exposed metal ions decrease the flexibility of a loop segment, perhaps influencing the choice of crystal form. The residues coordinating the surface metal ion are similar in the triclinic and monoclinic crystal forms. The coordinating ligands for the corresponding metal ion in the tetragonal crystal form are different, leading to a tighter packing arrangement. Although BacB is a monomer in solution, a dimer of BacB serves as a template on which higher order symmetrical arrangements are formed. The different crystal forms of BacB thus provide experimental evidence for metal-ion-mediated lattice formation and crystal packing.

Three new transition metal complexes using 2-pyrimidineamidoxime (pmadH(2)) as multidentate chelating and/or bridging ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The ligand pmadH(2) has two potential bridging functional groups mu-O and mu-(N-O)] and consequently shows several coordination modes. While a polymeric 1D Cu-II complex Cu(pmadH(2))(2)(NO3)](NO3) (1) was obtained upon treatment of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O with pmadH(2) at room temperature in the absence of base, a high temperature reaction in the presence of base yielded a tetranuclear Cu-II-complex Cu-4(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)(NO3)](NO3)(H2O) (2). One of the Cu-II centers is in a square pyramidal environment while the other three are in a square planar geometry. Reaction of the same ligand with an equimolar mixture of both Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and NiCl2 center dot 6H(2)O yielded a tetranuclear heterometallic (Cu2Ni2II)-Ni-II complex Cu2Ni2(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)Cl-2]center dot H2O (3) containing both square planar (Ni-II) and square pyramidal (Cu-II) metal centers. Complexes 1-3 represent the first examples of polynuclear metal complexes of 2-pyrimidineamidoxime. The analysis of variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data of 2 reveals that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions exist in this complex (J(1) = +10.7 cm(-1) and J(2) = -2.7 cm(-1) with g = 2.1) leading to a resultant ferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 shows expected antiferromagnetic interaction between two Cu-II centers through -N-O- bridging pathway with J(1) = -3.4 cm(-1) and g = 2.08. DFT calculations have been used to corroborate the magnetic results.

We have analyzed the set of inter and intra base pair parameters for each dinucleotide step in single crystal structures of dodecamers, solved at high and medium resolution and all crystallized in P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group. The objective was to identify whether all the structures which have either the Drew-Dickerson (DD) sequence d[CGCGAATTCGCG] with some base modification or related sequence (non-DD), would display the same sequence dependent structural variability about its palindromic sequence, despite the molecule being bent at one end because of similar crystal lattice packing effect. Most of the local doublet parameters for base pairs steps G2-C3 and G10-C11 positions, symmetrically situated about the lateral twofold, were significantly correlated between themselves. In non-DD sequences, significant correlations between these positional parameters were absent. The different range of local step parameter values at each sequence position contributed to the gross feature of smooth helix axis bending in all structures. The base pair parameters in some of the positions, for medium resolution DD sequence, were quite unlike the high-resolution set and encompassed a higher range of values. Twist and slide are the two main parameters that show wider conformational range for the middle region of non-DD sequence structures in comparison to DD sequence structures. On the contrary, the minor and major groove features bear good resemblance between DD and non-DD sequence crystal structure datasets. The sugar-phosphate backbone torsion angles are similar in all structures, in sharp contrast to base pair parameter variation for high and low resolution DD and non-DD sequence structures, consisting of unusual (epsilon =g(-), xi =t) B-II conformation at the 10(th) position of the dodecamer sequence. Thus examining DD and non-DD sequence structures packed in the same crystal lattice arrangement, we infer that inter and intra base pair parameters are as symmetrically equivalent in its value as the symmetry related step for the palindromic DD sequence about lateral two-fold axis. This feature would lead us to agree with the conclusion that DNA conformation is not substantially affected by end-to-end or lateral inter-molecular interaction due to crystal lattice packing effect. Non-DD sequence structures acquire step parameter values which reflect the altered sequence at each of the dodecamer sequence position in the orthorhombic lattice while showing similar gross features of DD sequence structures

The reaction of [Cu2(O2CMe)4(H2O)2] with N, N, N′, N′-tetramethylethane- 1,2-diamine (tmen) in ethanol yielded the dicopper(II) complex [Cu2(OH)(O2CMe)(tmen)2][ClO4]21. A similar reaction with N, N- dimethylethane- 1,2-diamine (dmen) afforded a crystalline product 2 in which two dicopper(II) complexes, [Cu2(OH)(O2CMe)(dmen)2][ClO4]22a and [Cu2(OH)(O2CMe)(H2O)2(dmen)2][ClO4]22b, are cocrystallized in a 1 : 1 molar ratio along with 2NaClO4. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 have been determined. The complexes have an asymmetrically dibridged [Cu2(µ-OH)(µ-O2CMe)]2+ core. The co-ordination geometry of the metal is square planar (CuO2N2). The copper atoms in 2b have a square-pyramidal CuO3N2 co-ordination sphere. The Cu Cu distances and Cu–O–Cu angles in 1, 2a and 2b are 3.339(2), 3.368(3), 3.395(7)Å, 120.1(2), 116.4(1) and 123.6(2)°, respectively. Complex 1 exhibits an axial ESR spectrum in a methanol glass giving g∥= 2.26 (A∥= 164 × 10–4 cm–1) and g⊥= 2.04. The ESR spectra obtained from the bulk material of the dmen product are indicative of the presence of two dimers, viz. complex 2a(g∥= 2.25, A∥= 165 × 10–4 cm–1; g⊥= 2.03) and 2b(g∥= 2.19, A∥= 184 × 10–4 cm–1; g⊥= 2.0). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on these complexes show an intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling in the dimeric core. The fitting parameters are J=–27.8 cm–1, g= 2.1 for complex 1 and J=–10.1 cm–1, g= 2.0 for 2. The magnetostructural properties of the complexes are discussed. There is a linear correlation of the –2J values with the Cu Cu distances among dibridged complexes having square-planar copper(II) centres.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental pollutants as well as well-known carcinogens. Therefore, it is important to develop an effective receptor for the detection and quantification of such molecules in solution. In view of this, a 1,3-dinaphthalimide derivative of calix4]arene (L) has been synthesized and characterized, and the structure has been established by single crystal XRD. In the crystal lattice, intermolecular arm-to-arm pi center dot center dot center dot pi overlap dominates and thus L becomes a promising receptor for providing interactions with the aromatic species in solution, which can be monitored by following the changes that occur in its fluorescence and absorption spectra. On the basis of the solution studies carried out with about 17 derivatives of the aromatic guest molecular systems, it may be concluded that the changes that occur in the fluorescence intensity seem to be proportional to the number of aromatic rings present and thus proportional to the extent of pi center dot center dot center dot pi interaction present between the naphthalimide moieties and the aromatic portion of the guest molecule. Though the nonaromatic portion of the guest species affects the fluorescence quenching, the trend is still based on the number of rings present in these. Four guest aldehydes are bound to L with K-ass of 2000-6000 M-1 and their minimum detection limit is in the range of 8-35 mu M. The crystal structure of a naphthaldehyde complex, L.2b, exhibits intermolecular arm-to-arm as well as arm-to-naphthaldehyde pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Molecular dynamics studies of L carried out in the presence of aromatic aldehydes under vacuum as well as in acetonitrile resulted in exhibiting interactions observed in the solid state and hence the changes observed in the fluorescence and absorption spectra are attributable for such interactions. Complex formation has also been delineated through ESI MS studies. Thus L is a promising receptor that can recognize PAHs by providing spectral changes proportional to the aromatic conjugation of the guest and the extent of aromatic pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions present between L and the guest.

We present the exact solution to a one-dimensional multicomponent quantum lattice model interacting by an exchange operator which falls off as the inverse sinh square of the distance. This interaction contains a variable range as a parameter and can thus interpolate between the known solutions for the nearest-neighbor chain and the inverse-square chain. The energy, susceptibility, charge stiffness, and the dispersion relations for low-lying excitations are explicitly calculated for the absolute ground state, as a function of both the range of the interaction and the number of species of fermions.

The design of compounds with novel and improved physico-chemical properties as advanced functional materials with a specific application spectrum requires the knowledge about possible supramolecular packing motifs and their experimental control in crystalline lattice. Besides the structure of the individual molecule, non-covalent interactions play a significant role in the determination of molecular conformation, along with the formation of three-dimensional supramolecular architecture in a crystal as a requirement for molecular recognition processes, and the related bioactivity. Involvement of functional groups will contribute to the formation of a predefined packing motif due to their well-defined interactions. The strength and directionality of these interactions create characteristic packing motifs, which can be used for the design of supramolecular arrangements by the development of appropriate strategies for the precise control of their topology. Most relevant of these non-covalent interactions are stacking interactions and hydrogen bonds, which have been subjects of extensive study in the last two decades. In recent literature, substantial efforts have been put in by various researchers towards the understanding of interactions involving organic fluorine and the role they play in generating different packing motifs which guides assembling of molecules in the crystal lattice.

The complex [Cu-II (theo)(2)(H2O)(3)].2H(2)O (theo = theophylline) was obtained from aqueous solution. The crystals belong to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, and are reflection twins about the (001) face. The structure was solved using data from a twinned crystal and refined to final R and R(W) values of 0.069 and 0.064, respectively. Copper has a square-pyramidal coordination with two thee molecules coordinating through N(7) at equatorial positions. The remaining sites are occupied by water molecules. O(6) of one of the thee molecules is at the other axial site at a longer distance of 3.18 Angstrom. This could lead to an alternate (4+1+1) octahedral coordination geometry for Cu-II. The packing is stabilized by stacking interactions between the theophylline moieties at an average separation of 3.46 Angstrom.

The synthesis, X-ray crystal structure, and magnetic properties of an angular trinuclear copper(II) complex [Cu3(O2CMC)4(bpy)3(H2O)](PF6)2 (1), obtained from a reaction of Cu2(O2CMe)4(H2O)2 With 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and NH4PF6 in ethanol, are reported. Complex 1 crystallizes in triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 11.529(1) angstrom, b = 12.121(2) angstrom, c = 17.153(2) angstrom, alpha = 82.01(1)-degrees, beta = 79.42(1)-degrees, gamma = 89.62(1)-degrees, and Z = 2. A total of 6928 data with I > 2.5sigma(I) were refined to R = 0.0441 and R(w) = 0.0557. The structure consists of a trinuclear core bridged by four acetate ligands showing different bonding modes. The coordination geometry at each copper is distorted square-pyramidal with a CuN2O2...O chromophore. The Cu...Cu distances are 3.198(1) angstrom, 4.568(1) angstrom, and 6.277(1) angstrom. There are two monoatomic acetate bridges showing Cu-O-Cu angles of 93.1(1) and 97.5(1)-degrees. Magnetic studies in the temperature range 39-297 K show the presence of a strong ferromagnetically coupled dicopper(II) unit (2J = +158 cm-1) and an essentially isolated copper(II) center (2J' = -0.4 cm-1) in 1. The EPR spectra display an axial spectrum giving g(parallel-to) = 2.28 (A(parallel-to) = 160 X 10(-4) cm-1) and g(perpendicular-to) = 2.06 (A(perpendicular-to) = 12 X 10(-4) cm-1) for the normal copper and two intense isotropic signals with g values 2.70 and 1.74 for the strongly coupled copper pair. The structural features of 1 compare well with the first generation models for ascorbate oxidase.

The title compound is photostable in the crystalline state and lattice-energy calculations have been employed to rationalize the photobehaviour. The well-known beta-steering ability of the chloro group is not operative in this system as there are no Cl...Cl interactions in the crystal lattice. All five benzylidene-DL-piperitone structures so far studied are alpha-packed and the molecular topology appears to be a deciding factor even in the presence of steering groups.

Recent advances in nonsilica fiber technology have prompted the development of suitable materials for devices operating beyond 1.55 mu m. The III-V ternaries and quaternaries (AlGaIn)(AsSb) lattice matched to GaSb seem to be the obvious choice and have turned out to be promising candidates for high speed electronic and long wavelength photonic devices. Consequently, there has been tremendous upthrust in research activities of GaSb-based systems. As a matter of fact, this compound has proved to be an interesting material for both basic and applied research. At present, GaSb technology is in its infancy and considerable research has to be carried out before it can be employed for large scale device fabrication. This article presents an up to date comprehensive account of research carried out hitherto. It explores in detail the material aspects of GaSb starting from crystal growth in bulk and epitaxial form, post growth material processing to device feasibility. An overview of the lattice, electronic, transport, optical and device related properties is presented. Some of the current areas of research and development have been critically reviewed and their significance for both understanding the basic physics as well as for device applications are addressed. These include the role of defects and impurities on the structural, optical and electrical properties of the material, various techniques employed for surface and bulk defect passivation and their effect on the device characteristics, development of novel device structures, etc. Several avenues where further work is required in order to upgrade this III-V compound for optoelectronic devices are listed. It is concluded that the present day knowledge in this material system is sufficient to understand the basic properties and what should be more vigorously pursued is their implementation for device fabrication. In continuation of our studies on crystal engineering using fluorine as a steering group, the photobehaviour of di and tri fluoro 4-styrylcoumarins has been examined. It is found that out of the five derivatives, four crystallize into P-packing mode producing syn-HH photodimer upon irradiation whereas the parent hydrocarbon produces an anti K-T dimer. The packing features of the photolabile crystals of 4-(4-fluorostyryl)-6-fluorocoumarin (1), 4-(2,6-difluorostyryl) 6-fluorocoumarin (2) and the photodimer (3a) of 4-(2,6-fluorostyryl)-7-fluorocoumarin (3) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The stereochemistry of the photodimer of 4-(2-fluorostyryl)-6-fluorocoumarin (4) is deduced based on preliminary X-ray crystallographic data. However, 4-(2,6-difluorostyryl) coumarin (5) is photoinert. The remarkable steering ability of fluorine is established with the molecular packing in the crystal lattice leading to the formation of syn H-H dimer in the above four examples. The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.
