Isothermal-isobaric ensemble Monte Carlo simulation studies of adamantane have been carried out at different temperatures. Thermodynamic properties and radial distribution functions calculated by employing a simple potential model based on sitesite interactions show good agreement with experiment and suggest that the solid is orientationally disordered at high temperatures.

A numerical scheme is presented for accurate simulation of fluid flow using the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) on unstructured mesh. A finite volume approach is adopted to discretize the LBE on a cell-centered, arbitrary shaped, triangular tessellation. The formulation includes a formal, second order discretization using a Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme for the terms representing advection of the distribution function in physical space, due to microscopic particle motion. The advantage of the LBE approach is exploited by implementing the scheme in a new computer code to run on a parallel computing system. Performance of the new formulation is systematically investigated by simulating four benchmark flows of increasing complexity, namely (1) flow in a plane channel, (2) unsteady Couette flow, (3) flow caused by a moving lid over a 2D square cavity and (4) flow over a circular cylinder. For each of these flows, the present scheme is validated with the results from Navier-Stokes computations as well as lattice Boltzmann simulations on regular mesh. It is shown that the scheme is robust and accurate for the different test problems studied.

Gaussian-beam-type solutions to the Maxwell equations are constructed by using results from relativistic front analysis, and the propagation characteristics of these beams are analyzed. The rays of geometrical optics are shown to be the trajectories of energy flow, as given by the Poynting vector. The longitudinal components of the field vectors in the direction of the beam axis, though small, are shown to be essential for a consistent description.

Polytypes have been simulated, treating them as analogues of a one-dimensional spin-half Ising chain with competing short-range and infinite-range interactions. Short-range interactions are treated as random variables to approximate conditions of growth from melt as well as from vapour. Besides ordered polytypes up to 12R, short stretches of long-period polytypes (up to 33R) have been observed. Such long-period sequences could be of significance in the context of Frank's theory of polytypism. The form of short-range interactions employed in the study has been justified by carrying out model potential calculations.

Anisotropic Gaussian Schell-model (AGSM) fields and their transformation by first-order optical systems (FOS’s) forming Sp(4,R) are studied using the generalized pencils of rays. The fact that Sp(4,R), rather than the larger group SL(4,R), is the relevant group is emphasized. A convenient geometrical picture wherein AGSM fields and FOS’s are represented, respectively, by antisymmetric second-rank tensors and de Sitter transformations in a (3+2)-dimensional space is developed. These fields are shown to separate into two qualitatively different families of orbits and the invariants over each orbit, two in number, are worked out. We also develop another geometrical picture in a (2+1)-dimensional Minkowski space suitable for the description of the action of axially symmetric FOS’s on AGSM fields, and the invariants, now seven in number, are derived. Interesting limiting cases forming coherent and quasihomogeneous fields are analyzed.

The results are presented of applying multi-time scale analysis using the singular perturbation technique for long time simulation of power system problems. A linear system represented in state-space form can be decoupled into slow and fast subsystems. These subsystems can be simulated with different time steps and then recombined to obtain the system response. Simulation results with a two-time scale analysis of a power system show a large saving in computational costs.

The application of Gaussian Quadrature (GQ) procedures to the evaluation of i—E curves in linear sweep voltammetry is advocated. It is shown that a high degree of precision is achieved with these methods and the values obtained through GQ are in good agreement with (and even better than) the values reported in literature by Nicholson-Shain, for example. Another welcome feature with GQ is its ability to be interpreted as an elegant, efficient analytic approximation scheme too. A comparison of the values obtained by this approach and by a recent scheme based on series approximation proposed by Oldham is made and excellent agreement is shown to exist.

Monte Carlo simulations of a binary alloy with impurity concentrations between 20 and 45 at.% have been carried out. The proportion of large clusters relative to that of small clusters increases with the number of MC diffusion steps as well as impurity concentration. Magnetic susceptibility peaks become more prominent and occur at higher temperatures with increasing impurity concentration. The different peaks in the susceptibility and specific heat curves seem to correspond to different sized clusters. A freezing model would explain the observed behaviour with the large clusters freezing first and the small clusters contributing to susceptibility (specific heat) peaks at lower temperatures.

A Monte Carlo study along with experimental uptake measurements of 1,2,3-trimethyl benzene, 1,2,4-trimethyl benzene and 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene (TMB) in beta zeolite is reported. The TraPPE potential has been employed for hydrocarbon interaction and harmonic potential of Demontis for modeling framework of the zeolite. Structure, energetics and dynamics of TMB in zeolite beta from Monte Carlo runs reveal interesting information about the diameter, properties of these isomers on confinement. Of the three isomers, 135TMB is supposed to have the largest diameter. It is seen TraPPE with Demontis potential predicts a restricted motion of 135TMB in the channels of zeolite beta.Experimentally, 135TMB has the highest transport diffusivity whereas MID results suggest this has the lowest self diffusivity. The distribution of relative velocities between colliding particles in shear flows of inelastic spheres is analysed in the Volume fraction range 0.4-0.64. Particle interactions are considered to be due to instantaneous binary collisions, and the collision model has a normal coefficient of restitution e(n) (negative of the ratio of the post- and pre-collisional relative velocities of the particles along the line joining the centres) and a tangential coefficient of restitution e(t) (negative of the ratio of post- and pre-collisional velocities perpendicular to line joining the centres). The distribution or pre-collisional normal relative velocities (along the line Joining the centres of the particles) is Found to be an exponential distribution for particles with low normal coefficient of restitution in the range 0.6-0.7. This is in contrast to the Gaussian distribution for the normal relative velocity in all elastic fluid in the absence of shear. A composite distribution function, which consists of an exponential and a Gaussian component, is proposed to span the range of inelasticities considered here. In the case of roughd particles, the relative velocity tangential to the surfaces at contact is also evaluated, and it is found to be close to a Gaussian distribution even for highly inelastic particles.Empirical relations are formulated for the relative velocity distribution. These are used to calculate the collisional contributions to the pressure, shear stress and the energy dissipation rate in a shear flow. The results of the calculation were round to be in quantitative agreement with simulation results, even for low coefficients of restitution for which the predictions obtained using the Enskog approximation are in error by an order of magnitude. The results are also applied to the flow down an inclined plane, to predict the angle of repose and the variation of the volume fraction with angle of inclination. These results are also found to be in quantitative agreement with previous simulations.

Using analysis-by-synthesis (AbS) approach, we develop a soft decision based switched vector quantization (VQ) method for high quality and low complexity coding of wideband speech line spectral frequency (LSF) parameters. For each switching region, a low complexity transform domain split VQ (TrSVQ) is designed. The overall rate-distortion (R/D) performance optimality of new switched quantizer is addressed in the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based parametric framework. In the AbS approach, the reduction of quantization complexity is achieved through the use of nearest neighbor (NN) TrSVQs and splitting the transform domain vector into higher number of subvectors. Compared to the current LSF quantization methods, the new method is shown to provide competitive or better trade-off between R/D performance and complexity.

Sequential firings with fixed time delays are frequently observed in simultaneous recordings from multiple neurons. Such temporal patterns are potentially indicative of underlying microcircuits and it is important to know when a repeatedly occurring pattern is statistically significant. These sequences are typically identified through correlation counts. In this paper we present a method for assessing the significance of such correlations. We specify the null hypothesis in terms of a bound on the conditional probabilities that characterize the influence of one neuron on another. This method of testing significance is more general than the currently available methods since under our null hypothesis we do not assume that the spiking processes of different neurons are independent. The structure of our null hypothesis also allows us to rank order the detected patterns. We demonstrate our method on simulated spike trains.

This paper presents a simple hybrid computer technique to study the transient behaviour of queueing systems. This method is superior to stand-alone analog or digital solution because the hardware requirement is excessive for analog technique whereas computation time is appreciable in the latter case. By using a hybrid computer one can share the analog hardware thus requiring fewer integrators. The digital processor can store the values, play them back at required time instants and change the coefficients of differential equations. By speeding up the integration on the analog computer it is feasible to solve a large number of these equations very fast. Hybrid simulation is even superior to the analytic technique because in the latter case it is difficult to solve time-varying differential equations.
