In this paper, a numerical investigation is performed to study the mixed convective flow and heat transfer characteristics past a square cylinder in cross flow at incidence. Utilizing air (Pr = 0.71) as an operating fluid, computations are carried out at a representative Reynolds number (Re) of 100. Angles of incidences are varied as, 0 degrees <= alpha <= 45 degrees. Effect of superimposed positive and negative cross-flow buoyancy is brought about by varying the Richardson number (RI) in the range -1.0 <= Ri <= 1.0. The detail features of flow topology and heat transport are analyzed critically for different angles of incidences. The thermo fluidic forces acting on the cylinder during mixed convection are captured in terms of the drag (C-D), lift (C-L), and moment (C-M) coefficients. The results show that the lateral width of the cylinder wake reduces with increasing alpha and the isotherms spread out far wide. In the range 0 degrees < alpha < 45 degrees, C-D reduces with increasing Ri. The functional dependence of C-M with Ri reveals a linear relationship. Thermal boundary layer thickness reduces with increasing angle of incidences. The global rate of heat transfer from the cylinder increases with increasing alpha. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, we combine available high resolution structural information on eukaryotic ribosomes with low resolution cryo-EM data on the Hepatitis C Viral RNA (IRES) human ribosome complex. Aided further by the prediction of RNA-protein interactions and restrained docking studies, we gain insights on their interaction at the residue level. We identified the components involved at the major and minor contact regions, and propose that there are energetically favorable local interactions between 40S ribosomal proteins and IRES domains. Domain II of the IRES interacts with ribosomal proteins S5 and S25 while the pseudoknot and the downstream domain IV region bind to ribosomal proteins S26, S28 and S5. We also provide support using UV cross-linking studies to validate our proposition of interaction between the S5 and IRES domains II and IV. We found that domain IIIe makes contact with the ribosomal protein S3a (S1e). Our model also suggests that the ribosomal protein S27 interacts with domain IIIc while S7 has a weak contact with a single base RNA bulge between junction IIIabc and IIId. The interacting residues are highly conserved among mammalian homologs while IRES RNA bases involved in contact do not show strict conservation. IRES RNA binding sites for S25 and S3a show the best conservation among related viral IRESs. The new contacts identified between ribosomal proteins and RNA are consistent with previous independent studies on RNA-binding properties of ribosomal proteins reported in literature, though information at the residue level is not available in previous studies.

A study on reactive diffusion is conducted in the Re-Si system. According to the study, ReSi1.8 phase grows with much higher thickness than the Re2Si phase, in the interdiffusion zone of bulk diffusion couples. The activation energy for integrated diffusion of ReSi1.8 is estimated to be 605 +/- 23 kJ/mol. The growth of the Re2Si phase is studied by considering an incremental diffusion couple of Re/ReSi1.8. Analysis based on the calculation of integrated diffusion coefficients indicates the reason underlying the observed high difference between the growth rates of the ReSi1.8 and Re2Si phases.

A new 1D NMR experiment cited as `Quick G-SERF', which re-introduces selective proton-proton scalar interactions in a pure shift spectrum during real time data acquisition, is reported. The method provides information on multiple proton-proton couplings from a single experiment, analogous to the 2D G-SERF technique, while significantly shortening the experimental time by 1-2 orders of magnitude due to reduced dimension and enhanced sensitivity.

It is well established that Re and Ru additions to Ni-base superalloys result in improved creep performance and phase stability. However, the role of Re and Ru and their synergetic effects are not well understood, and the first step in understanding these effects is to design alloys with controlled microstructural parameters. A computational approach was undertaken in the present work for designing model alloys with varying levels of Re and Ru. Thermodynamic and first principles calculations were employed complimentarily to design a set of alloys with varying Re and Ru levels, but which were constrained by constant microstructural parameters, i.e., phase fractions and lattice misfit across the alloys. Three ternary/quaternary alloys of type Ni-Al-xRe-yRu were thus designed. These compositions were subsequently cast, homogenized and aged. Experimental results suggest that while the measured volume fraction matches the predicted value in the Ru containing alloy, volume fraction is significantly higher than the designed value in the Re containing alloys. This is possibly due to errors in the thermodynamic database used to predict phase fraction and composition. These errors are also reflected in the mismatch between predicted and measured values of misfit.

We show that a film of a suspension of polymer grafted nanoparticles on a liquid substrate can be employed to create two-dimensional nanostructures with a remarkable variation in the pattern length scales. The presented experiments also reveal the emergence of concentration-dependent bimodal patterns as well as re-entrant behaviour that involves length scales due to dewetting and compositional instabilities. The experimental observations are explained through a gradient dynamics model consisting of coupled evolution equations for the height of the suspension film and the concentration of polymer. Using a Flory-Huggins free energy functional for the polymer solution, we show in a linear stability analysis that the thin film undergoes dewetting and/or compositional instabilities depending on the concentration of the polymer in the solution. We argue that the formation via `hierarchical self-assembly' of various functional nanostructures observed in different systems can be explained as resulting from such an interplay of instabilities.

We report an anomalous re-entrant glassy magnetic phase in (l00) oriented ferromagnetic LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 single crystals. The characterization is fortified with conventional magnetometry, like linear as-well-as non-linear ac susceptibility and specific heat. As the sample is cooled below the ferromagnetic transition temperature, it reenters a glassy magnetic phase whose dynamics have little resemblance with the conventional response. The glassy transition shifts to a higher temperature with increasing frequency of the applied ac field. But it does not respond to the dc biasing or memory experiment. Specific heat as well as non-linear ac susceptibility data also do not relate to the conventional glassy response. Unusually low magnetic entropy indicates the lack of long range magnetic ordering. The results demonstrate that the glassy phase in LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 is not due to any of the known conventional origins. We infer that the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction due to high B-site disorder is responsible for this anomalous re-entrant glassy phase. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.
