Normal coordinate analysis of a molecule of the type XY7 (point group D5h) has been carried out using Wilson's FG, matrix method and the results have been utilized to calculate the force constants of IF7 from the available Raman and infrared data. Some of the assignments made previously by Lord and others have been revised and with the revised assignments the thermodynamic quantities of IF7 have been computed from 300°K to 1000°K under rigid rotator and harmonic oscillator approximation.

We study the occurrence of nonclassical rotational inertia (NCRI) arising from superfluidity along grain boundaries in a two-dimensionalbosonic system. We make use of a standard mapping between the zero-temperature properties of this system and the statistical mechanics of interacting vortex lines in the mixed phase of a type-II superconductor. In the mapping, the liquid phase of the vortex system corresponds to the superfluid bosonic phase. We consider numerically obtained polycrystalline configurations of the vortex lines in which the microcrystals are separated by liquidlike grain-boundary regions which widen as the vortex system temperature increases. The NCRI of the corresponding zero-temperature bosonic systems can then be numerically evaluated by solving the equations of superfluid hydrodynamics in the channels near the grain boundaries. We find that the NCRI increases very abruptly as the liquid regions in the vortex system (equivalently, superfluid regions in the bosonic system) form a connected, system-spanning structure with one or more closed loops. The implications of these results for experimentally observed supersolid phenomena are discussed.
Ultrasonic measurement of the elastic constants of sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals
Resumo:
Sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals possess excellent nonlinear optical properties such that they can be used for optical second-harmonic generation. It belongs to the orthorhombic system with the space group Ima2. Slow evaporation or slow cooling techniques can be used to grow good optical quality single crystals from supersaturated solution. All the nine elastic constants of this crystal have been measured using an ultrasonic technique. Samples for measurements have been cut along desired crystallographic axes and the pulse echo overlap technique has been used to measure longitudinal and shear ultrasonic wave velocities along appropriate symmetry directions in the crystal. The McSkimin Delta t criterion has been applied to determine the round trip travel time accurately, from which the nine elastic constants have been evaluated. Temperature variation of selected elastic constants in a limited range have also been measured and reported.

A numerical integration procedure for rotational motion using a rotation vector parametrization is explored from an engineering perspective by using rudimentary vector analysis. The incremental rotation vector, angular velocity and acceleration correspond to different tangent spaces of the rotation manifold at different times and have a non-vectorial character. We rewrite the equation of motion in terms of vectors lying in the same tangent space, facilitating vector space operations consistent with the underlying geometric structure. While any integration algorithm (that works within a vector space setting) may be used, we presently employ a family of explicit Runge-Kutta algorithms to solve this equation. While this work is primarily motivated out of a need for highly accurate numerical solutions of dissipative rotational systems of engineering interest, we also compare the numerical performance of the present scheme with some of the invariant preserving schemes, namely ALGO-C1, STW, LIEMIDEA] and SUBCYC-M. Numerical results show better local accuracy via the present approach vis-a-vis the preserving algorithms. It is also noted that the preserving algorithms do not simultaneously preserve all constants of motion. We incorporate adaptive time-stepping within the present scheme and this in turn enables still higher accuracy and a `near preservation' of constants of motion over significantly longer intervals. This study focuses on the temperature dependent optical band gap changes in the amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) films. The behavior of the amorphous GST thin films at low temperatures has been studied. The band gap increment of around 0.2 eV is observed at low temperature (4.2 K) compared to room temperature (300 K). The band gap changes associated with the temperature are completely reversible. The other optical parameters like Urbach energy and Tauc parameter (B-1/2) are studied for different temperatures and discussed. The observed changes in optical band gap (E-g) are fitting to Fan's one phonon approximation. Phonon energy ((h) over bar omega) corresponding to a frequency of 3.59 THz is derived from Fan's approximation, which is close to the reported value of 3.66 THz. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In the crystal structure of the antimalarial drug amodiaquine, the bonds linking the quinoline and the phenyl groups show partial double-bond character. The partial double-bond character of the two exocyclic bonds, together with stereochemical constraints, reduce flexibility of the two ring systems of the molecule. The dihedral angle between the two ring planes is lowest compared to those in the antileukaemic drug amsacrine and its derivatives. CPK-modelling studies suggest the way amodiaquine can bind to DNA. Stacking interaction between the quinoline and phenyl groups of independent molecules and the hydrogen-bond network stabilize the crystal structure.

Theoretical calculations of the geminal carbonyl-13C- proton coupling constant, 2J(C′H), in α-amino acids have been carried out using Dirac Vector model and Penney-Dirac bond order formulations. The results indicate that the couplings are dependent on the backbone torsion angle psi (ψ) of the amino acid residues in peptides. The meagre available experimental data seem to support the theoretical findings.

The π-electronic excitations and excited-state geometries of trans-stilbene (tS) are found by combining exact solutions of the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and semiempirical Parametric Method 3 (PM3) calculations. Comprehensive comparisons with tS spectra are obtained and related to the fluorescence and topological alternation of poly(paraphenylenevinylene) (PPV). The one-photon absorption and triplet of tS correspond, respectively, to singlet and triplet bipolarons confined to two phenyls, while the tS2- ground state is a confined charged bipolaron. Independent estimates of the relaxation energy between vertical and adiabatic excitation show the bipolaron binding energy to depend on both charge and spin, as expected for interacting π electrons in correlated or molecular states. Complete configuration interaction within the PPP model of tS accounts for the singlet-triplet gap, for the fine-structure constants and triplet-triplet spectra, for two-photon transitions and intensities, and for one-photon spectra and the radiative lifetime, although the relative position of nearly degenerate covalent and ionic singlets is not resolved. The planar PM3 geometry and low rotational barrier of tS agree with resolved rotational and vibrational spectra in molecular beams. PM3 excitation and relaxation energies for tS bipolarons are consistent with experiment and with PPP results. Instead of the exciton model, we interpret tS excitations in terms of states that are localized on each ring or extended over an alternating chain, as found exactly in Hückel theory, and find nearly degenerate transitions between extended and localized states in the singlet, triplet, and dianion manifolds. The large topological alternation of the extended system increases the ionicity and interchanges the order of the lowest one- and two-photon absorption of PPV relative to polyenes.

A microscopic calculation of the solvation dynamics of an ion in liquid water is presented. The calculated solvation time correlation function shows an ultrafast Gaussian decay which carries about 70%–90% of the strength followed by a biexponential decay with time constants equal to 250 fs and 1 ps. These results are in excellent agreement with the computer simulations of Maroncelli and Fleming and also with the experimental findings of Barbara and Jarzeba. In addition, we find that both the rotational librations and the intermolecular translational vibrational modes of water contribute significantly to the initial Gaussian decay.

Direct use of experimental eigenvalues of the vibrational secular equation on to the ab initio predicted eigenvector space is suggested as a means of obtaining a reliable set of intramolecular force constants. This method which we have termed RECOVES (recovery in the eigenvector space) is computationally simple and free from arbitrariness. The RECOVES force constants, by definition, reproduce the experimental vibrational frequencies of the parent molecule exactly. The ab initio calculations were carried out for ethylene as a test molecule and the force constants obtained by the present procedure also correctly predict the vibrational frequencies of the deuterated species. The RECOVES force constants for ethylene are compared with those obtained by using the SQM procedure.

Reactions of cyanide radicals with alkanes have been investigated by ab initio methods. It is found that the potential energy surface for reaction of CN with a primary C-H bond in methane has a small positive barrier while reactions of CN with a secondary and a tertiary C-H bond in alkanes are barrierless at the correlated level. A simple explanation for the obtained negative temperature dependence of rate constants for reactions of CN with a secondary and a tertiary C-H bond in alkanes are given in terms of the collision theory of bimolecular reactions. It is shown that for barrierless reactions the negative temperature dependence of the rate constants is attributed to the variation of the pre-exponential factor with temperature.

Effects of basis set and electron correlation on the equilibrium geometry, force constants and vibrational spectra of BH3NH3 have been studied. A series of basis sets ranging from double zeta to triple zeta including polarization and diffuse functions have been utilized. All the SCF based calculations overestimate the dative B-N bond distance and considerable improvement occurs when the treatment for electron correlation is introduced. Detailed vibrational analysis for BH3NH3 has been carried out. The mean absolute percentage deviation of the ab initio predicted vibration frequencies of (BH3NH3)-B-11 from the experiment is about 10% for the SCF based calculations and the MP2 method shows better agreement, the overall deviation being 5-6%. The ground state effective force constants of BH3NH3 were obtained using RECOVES procedure. The RECOVES sets of force constants are found to be highly satisfactory for the prediction of the vibrational frequencies of different isotopomers of BH3NH3. The mean absolute percentage deviation of the calculated frequencies of different isotopomers from the experiment is much less than 1%. The RECOVES-MP2/augDZP set of force constants was found to be the best set among the different sets for this molecule. Theoretical infrared intensities are in fair agreement with the observed spectral features.
