Evolution in the time series of vortex velocity fluctuations across different regimes of vortex flow
Resumo:
Investigations of vortex velocity fluctuation in time domain have revealed a presence of low frequency velocity fluctuations which evolve with the different driven phases of the vortex state in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2. The observation of velocity fluctuations with a characteristic low frequency is associated with the onset of nonlinear nature of vortex flow deep in the driven elastic vortex state. Analyzing Cache Performance Bottlenecks of STM Applications and addressing them with Compiler's help
Resumo:
Software transactional memory (STM) is a promising programming paradigm for shared memory multithreaded programs as an alternative to traditional lock based synchronization. However adoption of STM in mainstream software has been quite low due to its considerable overheads and its poor cache/memory performance. In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the cache behavior of STM applications and quantify the impact of different STM factors on the cache misses experienced by the applications. Based on our analysis, we propose a compiler driven Lock-Data Colocation (LDC), targeted at reducing the cache overheads on STM. We show that LDC is effective in improving the cache behavior of STM applications by reducing the dcache miss latency and improving execution time performance.

Large MIMO systems with tens of antennas in each communication terminal using full-rate non-orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) from Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) can achieve the benefits of both transmit diversity as well as high spectral efficiencies. Maximum-likelihood (ML) or near-ML decoding of these large-sized STBCs at low complexities, however, has been a challenge. In this paper, we establish that near-ML decoding of these large STBCs is possible at practically affordable low complexities. We show that the likelihood ascent search (LAS) detector, reported earlier by us for V-BLAST, is able to achieve near-ML uncoded BER performance in decoding a 32x32 STBC from CDA, which employs 32 transmit antennas and sends 32(2) = 1024 complex data symbols in 32 time slots in one STBC matrix (i.e., 32 data symbols sent per channel use). In terms of coded BER, with a 16x16 STBC, rate-3/4 turbo code and 4-QAM (i.e., 24 bps/Hz), the LAS detector performs close to within just about 4 dB from the theoretical MIMO capacity. Our results further show that, with LAS detection, information lossless (ILL) STBCs perform almost as good as full-diversity ILL (FD-ILL) STBCs. Such low-complexity detectors can potentially enable implementation of high spectral efficiency large MIMO systems that could be considered in wireless standards.

Silver nanoparticles are being extensively studied due to their widespread applications and unique properties. In the present study, the growth kinetics of silver nanoparticles as synthesized on reduction of silver nitrate solution by aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica leaves was investigated. The formation of silver nanoparticles was preliminarily monitored by measuring the absorption maxima at different time intervals after adding the reducing agent to the silver salt solution (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 h). At different time points characterization studies were conducted using X-ray diffraction studies, FT-IR techniques, zeta potential studies and transmission electron microscopy. The total available silver in the reaction medium was determined at different durations using ICP-OES. The changes in reduction potential in the medium were also monitored using potentiometric analysis. The results confirm a definite change in the medium pertaining to formation of the stable nanoparticles after 2 h, and a significant increase in the agglomeration tendency after 4 h of interaction. The growth kinetic data of the nanoparticles till 3.5 h was found to fit the LSW model confirming diffusion limited growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modeling of wave propagation in hoses, unlike in rigid pipes or waveguides, introduces a coupling between the inside medium, the hose wall, and the outside medium, This alters the axial wave number and thence the corresponding effective speed of sound inside the hose resulting in sound radiation into the outside medium, also called the breakout or shell noise, The existing literature on the subject is such that a hose cannot be integrated into the, whole piping system made up of sections of hoses, pipes, and mufflers to predict the acoustical performance in terms of transmission loss (TL), The present paper seeks to fill this gap, Three one-dimensional coupled wave equations are written to account for the presence of a yielding wall with a finite lumped transverse impedance of the hose material, The resulting wave equation can readily be reduced to a transfer matrix form using an effective wave number for a moving medium in a hose section, Incorporating the effect of fluid loading due to the outside medium also allows prediction of the transverse TL and the breakout noise, Axial TL and transverse TL have been combined into net TL needed by designers, Predictions of the axial as well as transverse TL are shown to compare well with those of a rigorous 3-D analysis using only one-hundredth of the computation time, Finally, results of some parametric studies are reported for engineers involved in the acoustical design of hoses. A new class of nets, called S-nets, is introduced for the performance analysis of scheduling algorithms used in real-time systems Deterministic timed Petri nets do not adequately model the scheduling of resources encountered in real-time systems, and need to be augmented with resource places and signal places, and a scheduler block, to facilitate the modeling of scheduling algorithms. The tokens are colored, and the transition firing rules are suitably modified. Further, the concept of transition folding is used, to get intuitively simple models of multiframe real-time systems. Two generic performance measures, called load index and balance index, which characterize the resource utilization and the uniformity of workload distribution, respectively, are defined. The utility of S-nets for evaluating heuristic-based scheduling schemes is illustrated by considering three heuristics for real-time scheduling. S-nets are useful in tuning the hardware configuration and the underlying scheduling policy, so that the system utilization is maximized, and the workload distribution among the computing resources is balanced.

Antenna selection (AS) provides most of the benefits of multiple-antenna systems at drastically reduced hardware costs. In receive AS, the receiver connects a dynamically selected subset of N available antennas to the L available RF chains. The "best" subset to be used for data reception is determined by means of channel estimates acquired using training sequences. Due to the nature of AS, the channel estimates at different antennas are obtained from different transmissions of the pilot sequence, and are, thus, outdated by different amounts in a time-varying channel. We show that a linear weighting of the estimates is optimum for the subset selection process, where the weights are related to the temporal correlation of the channel variations. When L is not an integer divisor of N, we highlight a new issue of "training voids", in which the last pilot transmission is not fully exploited by the receiver. We present a "void-filling" method for fully exploiting these voids, which essentially provides more accurate training for some antennas, and derive the optimal subset selection rule for any void-filling method. We also derive new closed-form equations for the performance of receive AS with optimal subset selection.

Receive antenna selection (AS) provides many benefits of multiple-antenna systems at drastically reduced hardware costs. In it, the receiver connects a dynamically selected subset of N available antennas to the L available RF chains. Due to the nature of AS, the channel estimates at different antennas, which are required to determine the best subset for data reception, are obtained from different transmissions of the pilot sequence. Consequently, they are outdated by different amounts in a time-varying channel. We show that a linear weighting of the estimates is necessary and optimum for the subset selection process, where the weights are related to the temporal correlation of the channel variations. When L is not an integer divisor of N , we highlight a new issue of ``training voids'', in which the last pilot transmission is not fully exploited by the receiver. We then present new ``void-filling'' methods that exploit these voids and greatly improve the performance of AS. The optimal subset selection rules with void-filling, in which different antennas turn out to have different numbers of estimates, are also explicitly characterized. Closed-form equations for the symbol error probability with and without void-filling are also developed.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectra are presented for p-nitroazobenzene dissolved in chloroform using 18 excitation Wavelengths, covering the region of (1)(n --> pi*) electronic transition. Raman intensities are observed for various totally symmetric fundamentals, namely, C-C, C-N, N=N, and N-O stretching vibrations, indicating that upon photoexcitation the excited-state evolution occurs along all of these vibrational coordinates. For a few fundamentals, interestingly, in p-nitroazobenzene, it is observed that the RR intensities decrease near the maxima of the resonant electronic (1)(n --> pi*) transition. This is attributed to the interference from preresonant scattering due to the strongly allowed (1)(pi --> pi*) electronic transition. The electronic absorption spectrum and the absolute Raman cross section for the nine Franck-Condon active fundamentals of p-nitroazobenzene have been successfully modeled using Heller's time-dependent formalism for Raman scattering. This employs harmonic description of the lowest energy (1)(n --> pi*) potential energy surface. The short-time isomerization dynamics is then examined from a priori knowledge of the ground-state normal mode descriptions of p-nitroazobenzene to convert the wave packet motion in dimensionless normal coordinates to internal coordinates. It is observed that within 20 fs after photoexcitation in p-nitroazobenzene, the N=N and C-N stretching vibrations undergo significant changes and the unsubstituted phenyl ring and the nitro stretching vibrations are also distorted considerably.

Thin films of VO2(B), a metastable polymorph of vanadium dioxide, have been grown on glass by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The films grown for 90 minutes have atypical microstructure, comprising micrometer-sized, island-like entities made up of numerous small, single-crystalline platelets (≅1 μm) emerging orthogonally from larger ones at the center. Microstructure evolution as a function of deposition time has been examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The metastable VO2(B) transforms to the stable rutile (R) phase at 550°C in inert ambient, which on cooling convert reversibly to M phase. Electron microscopy shows that annealing leads to the disintegration of the VO2(B) platelets into small crystallites of the rutile phase VO2(R), although the platelet morphology is retained. The magnitude of the jump in resistance at the semiconductor-to-metal, VO2(M)→VO2(R) phase transition depends on the arrangement of polycrystalline platelets in the films.

Fiber-optic CDMA technology is well suited for high speed local-area-networks (LANs) as it has good salient features. In this paper, we model the wavelength/time multiple-pulses-per-row (W/T MPR) FO-CDMA network channel, as a Z channel. We compare the performances of W/T MPR code with and without hard-limiter and show that significant performance improvement can be achieved by using hard-limiters in the receivers. In broadcast channels, MAI is the dominant source of noise. Hence the performance analysis is carried out considering only MAI and other receiver noises are neglected.

We consider a fluid queue in discrete time with random service rate. Such a queue has been used in several recent studies on wireless networks where the packets can be arbitrarily fragmented. We provide conditions on finiteness of moments of stationary delay, its Laplace-Stieltjes transform and various approximations under heavy traffic. Results are extended to the case where the wireless link can transmit in only a few slots during a frame.

We consider the problem of scheduling semiconductor burn-in operations, where burn-in ovens are modelled as batch processing machines. Most of the studies assume that ready times and due dates of jobs are agreeable (i.e., ri < rj implies di ≤ dj). In many real world applications, the agreeable property assumption does not hold. Therefore, in this paper, scheduling of a single burn-in oven with non-agreeable release times and due dates along with non-identical job sizes as well as non-identical processing of time problem is formulated as a Non-Linear (0-1) Integer Programming optimisation problem. The objective measure of the problem is minimising the maximum completion time (makespan) of all jobs. Due to computational intractability, we have proposed four variants of a two-phase greedy heuristic algorithm. Computational experiments indicate that two out of four proposed algorithms have excellent average performance and also capable of solving any large-scale real life problems with a relatively low computational effort on a Pentium IV computer.

Biomechanical signals due to human movements during exercise are represented in time-frequency domain using Wigner Distribution Function (WDF). Analysis based on WDF reveals instantaneous spectral and power changes during a rhythmic exercise. Investigations were carried out on 11 healthy subjects who performed 5 cycles of sun salutation, with a body-mounted Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as a motion sensor. Variance of Instantaneous Frequency (I.F) and Instantaneous Power (I.P) for performance analysis of the subject is estimated using one-way ANOVA model. Results reveal that joint Time-Frequency analysis of biomechanical signals during motion facilitates a better understanding of grace and consistency during rhythmic exercise.
