In this brief, we present a new circuit technique to generate the sigmoid neuron activation function (NAF) and its derivative (DNAF). The circuit makes use of transistor asymmetry in cross-coupled differential pair to obtain the derivative. The asymmetry is introduced through external control signal, as and when required. This results in the efficient utilization of the hard-ware by realizing NAF and DNAF using the same building blocks. The operation of the circuit is presented in the subthreshold region for ultra low-power applications. The proposed circuit has been experimentally prototyped and characterized as a proof of concept on the 1.5-mum AMI technology.

Using the polymerase chain reaction, the coding sequence for peanut agglutinin (PNA) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Amplified PNA is identical to previously reported cDNA, suggesting the absence of any introns in PNA gene. Recombinant (re-) PNA forms inclusion bodies in E. coli. Production of PNA was confirmed by probing Western blots with polyclonal anti-PNA immunoglobulin G. Inclusion bodies were solubilized with 6 M guanidine-HCl and renatured by rapid dilution in the presence of metal ions. The renatured lectin was then purified by affinity chromatography. The re-lectin shows carbohydrate-binding properties similar to the natural PNA. This expression system provides a model for future mutagenesis studies of the carbohydrate-binding site and thus facilitates ongoing efforts to explore the molecular basis for the specificity of lectin-carbohydrate interaction.

Bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of mulberry (Morus indica) as well as from control soil were tested for their effects on the growth of mulberry seedlings and for phytohormone production. About 12.8 per cent of the rhizosphere and 9.7 per cent of the soil isolates produced phytohormones in cultures. Rhizosphere isolates were more active in hormone synthesis than their soil counterparts. Soaking mulberry stem cuttings in culture filtrates of phytohormone synthesisers hastened their rooting. Culture filtrates of many isolates — hormone producers or not — stimulated or inhibited the growth of shoot and/or root of plants. Many cultures could also inhibit the germination of mulberry seeds.

The (overall trans) addition of hydrogen chloride to cyclohex-1- enecarbonitrile in anhydrous alcoholic media proceeds to give cis-2-chlorocyclohexanecarboxylate (together with some cis-2- chlorocyclohexanecarboxamide): no corresponding products with the trans-configuration are detectable. In anhydrous ether the addition proceeds to give a single isomer, presumably cis-, of 2-chlorocyclohexanecarbonitrile, indicating that the configuration of the products may not be equilibrium-controlled in alcoholic media. An examination of the steric factors indicates that the transition state for protonation of the presumed intermediate, 2-chlorocyclohexylidenemethylideneimine, leading to cis-product is favoured if interaction between the lateral π-orbital of the C-N double bond and the lone-pairs on the chlorine atom at the 2-position is large. Consideration of interactions in the transition states meets Zimmerman's criticism that invoking A1, 3 interaction existing in ground states to explain product configuration takes insufficient account of the Curtin-Hammett principle.

The study of the nutritional requirements of Arthrobacter strain C19d which accumulates alanine in large amounts in the culture medium. 1evealed that the organism needs thiamine for its growth. A Iso the alanine accumulation by this strain was found to be related to thiamine concentration in the medium. The optimum concentration of thiamine for alanine accumulation (20 tJ.g/mJ) Was also optimum for the growth of the organism indicating thereby that alanine accumulation by this strain is a growth associated process rather than far removed from it. Among the various growth promoters tried yeast extract was found to be superior from the point of view of alanine yield and it wa5 also superior to giving thiamine alone in the medium. A concentration of 0.02% yeast extract was found to be optimum for alanine occumulation.

Using Thomé's procedure, the asymptotic solutions of the Frieman and Book equation for the two-particle correlation in a plasma have been obtained in a complete form. The solution is interpreted in terms of the Lorentz distance. The exact expressions for the internal energy and pressure are evaluated and they are found to be a generalization of the result obtained earlier by others.

We demonstrate the activity of Ce0.78Sn0.2Pt0.02O2-delta, a new catalyst, towards water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Over 99.5% CO conversion to H-2 is observed at 300 +/- 25 degrees C. Based on different characterization techniques we found that the present catalyst is resistant to deactivation due to carbonate formation and sintering of Pt on the surface when subjected to longer duration of reaction conditions. The catalyst does not require any pre-treatment or activation between start-up/shut-down reaction operations. Formation of side products such as methane, methanol, formaldehyde, coke etc. was not observed under the WGS reaction conditions indicating the high selectivity of the catalyst for H-2. Temperature programmed reduction of the catalyst in hydrogen (H-2-TPR) shows reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, Sn4+ to Sn2+ and Pt4+ to Pt-0 oxidation state with oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of 3500 mu mol g(-1) at 80 degrees C. Such high value of OSC indicates the presence of highly activated lattice oxygen. CO oxidation in presence of stoichiometric O-2 shows 100% conversion to CO2 at room temperature. The catalyst also exhibits 100% selectivity for CO2 at room temperature towards preferential oxidation (PROX) of residual CO in presence of excess hydrogen in the feed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The temperature (T) and electric field-to-gas pressure (E/P) dependences of the rate coefficientk for the reaction SF 6 +SOF4rarrSOF 5 +SF5 have been measured. ForT<270>k approaches a constant of 2.1×109 cm3/s, and for 433>T>270 K,k decreases withT according tok (cm3/s)=0.124 exp [3.3 lnT(K)]. ForE/Pk has a constant value of about 2.5×1010 cm3/s, and for 130 V/cm·torr>E/P>60 V/cm·torr, the rate is approximately given byk (cm3/s)sim7.0×1010 exp (0.022E/P). The measured rate coefficient is used to estimate the influence of this reaction on SOF4 production from negative, point-plane, glow-type corona discharges in gas mixtures containing SF6 and at least trace amounts of O2 and H2O. A chemical kinetics model of the ion-drift region in the discharge gap is used to fit experimental data on SOF4 yields assuming that the SF 6 +SOF4 reaction is the predominant SOF4 loss mechanism. It is found that the contribution of this reaction to SOF4 destruction falls considerably below the estimated maximum effect assuming that SF 6 is the predominant charge carrier which reacts only with SOF4. The results of this analysis suggest that SF 6 is efficiently deactivated by other reactions, and the influence of SF 6 +SOF4 on SOF4 production is not necessarily more significant than that of other slower secondary processes such as gas-phase hydrolysis

Distant repeats between a pair of protein sequences can be exploited to study the various aspects of proteins such as structure-function relationship, disorders due to protein malfunction, evolutionary analysis, etc. An in-depth analysis of the distant repeats would facilitate to establish a stable evolutionary relation of the repeats with respect to their three-dimensional structure. To this effect, an algorithm has been devised to identify the distant repeats in a pair of protein sequences by essentially using the scores of PAM (Percent Accepted Mutation) matrices. The proposed algorithm will be of much use to researchers involved in the comparative study of various organisms based on the amino-acid repeats in protein sequences. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The paper aims to assess the potential of decentralized bioenergy technologies in meeting rural energy needs and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Decentralized energy planning is carried out for the year 2005 and 2020. Decentralized energy planning model using goal programming technique is applied for different decentralized scales (village to a district) for obtaining the optimal mix of energy resources and technologies. Results show that it is possible to meet the energy requirements of all the services that are necessary to promote development and improve the quality of life in rural areas from village to district scale, by utilizing the locally available energy resources such as cattle dung, leaf litter and woody biomass feedstock from bioenergy plantation on wastelands. The decentralized energy planning model shows that biomass feedstock required at village to district level can even be obtained from biomass conserved by shifting to biogas for cooking. Under sustainable development scenario, the decentralized energy planning model shows that there is negligible emission of CO2, oxide of Sulphur (SOx) and oxide of nitrogen (NOx), even while meeting all the energy needs.

We observe a surprisingly sharp increase in the pair hydrophobicity in the water climethylsulfoxide (DMSO) binary mixture at small DMSO concentrations, with the mole fraction of DMSO (x(D)) in the range 0.12-0.16. The increase in pair hydrophobicity is measured by an increase in the depth of the first minimum in the potential of mean force (PMF) between two methane molecules. However, this enhanced hydrophobicity again weakens at higher DMSO concentrations. We find markedly unusual behavior of the pure binary mixture (in the same composition range) in the diffusion coefficient of DMSO and in the local composition fluctuation of water, We find that, in the said composition range, the average coordination number of the methyl groups (of distinct DMSO) varies between 2.4 and 2.6, indicating the onset of the formation of a chain-like extended connectivity in an otherwise stable tetrahedral network comprising of water and DMSO molecules. We propose that the enhanced pair hydrophobicity of the binary mixture at low DMSO concentrations is due to the participation of the two methane molecules in the local structural order and the emerging molecular associations in the water-DMSO mixture.

Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of Percoll purified Leydig cell proteins from 20- and 120-day-old rats revealed a significant decrease in a low molecular weight peptide in the adult rats. Administration of human chorionic gonadotropin to immature rats resulted in a decrease in the low molecular weight peptide along with increase in testosterone production. Modulation of the peptide by human chorionic gonadotropin could be confirmed by Western blotting. The presence of a similar peptide could be detected by Western blotting in testes of immature mouse, hamster, guinea pig but not in adrenal, placenta and corpus luteum. Administration of testosterone propionate which is known to inhibit the pituitary luteinizing hormone levels in adult rats resulted in an increase in the low molecular weight peptide, as checked by Western blotting. It is suggested that this peptide may have a role in regulation of acquisition of responsiveness to luteinizing hormone by immature rat Leydig cells.

Basepair stacking calculations have been carried out to understand the conformational polymorphism of DNA and its sequence dependence. The recently developed self-consistent parameter set, which is specially suitable for describing irregular DNA structures, has been used to describe the geometry of a basepair doublet. While for basepairs without any propeller, the favourable stacking patterns do not appear to have very strong features, much more noticeable sequence dependent stacking patterns emerge once a propeller is applied to the basepairs. The absolute minima for most sequences occurs for a doublet geometry close to the B-DNA fibre models. Hence in the B-DNA region, no strong sequence dependent features are found, but the range of doublet geometries observed in the crystal structures generally lie within the low energy contours, obtained from stacking energy calculations. The doublet geometry corresponding to the A-DNA fibre model is not energetically favourable for the purine-pyrimidine sequences, which prefer small roll angle values when the slide has a large negative value as in A-DNA. However positive roll with large negative slide is allowed for GG, GA, AG and the pyrimidine-purine steps. This is consistent with the observed geometries of various steps in A-DNA crystals. Thus the general features of the basepair doublets predicted from these theoretical studies agree very well with the results from crystal structure analysis. However, since most sequences show an overall preference for B-type doublet geometry, the B --> A transition for random sequence DNA cannot be explained on the basis of basepair stacking interactions.
