Any pair of non-adjacent vertices forms a non-edge in a graph. Contraction of a non-edge merges two non-adjacent vertices into a single vertex such that the edges incident on the non-adjacent vertices are now incident on the merged vertex. In this paper, we consider simple connected graphs, hence parallel edges are removed after contraction. The minimum number of nodes whose removal disconnects the graph is the connectivity of the graph. We say a graph is k-connected, if its connectivity is k. A non-edge in a k-connected graph is contractible if its contraction does not result in a graph of lower connectivity. Otherwise the non-edge is non-contractible. We focus our study on non-contractible non-edges in 2-connected graphs. We show that cycles are the only 2-connected graphs in which every non-edge is non-contractible. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In β-AgI and β-Ag3SI the ionic conductivity has been measured at frequencies from 1kHz to 2.6 GHz and from 10 MHz to 10 THz, respectively. In both phases we observe a conductivity increase of some orders of magnitude, due to localized types of motion of the silver ions. In β-AgI the increase is found at about 1 MHz and reflects cooperative back-and-forth hopping processes between adjacent tetrahedral sites. In β-Ag3SI the phenomenon occurs at microwave frequencies. Here it is caused by a non-hopping, non-periodic localized Ag+-motion within shallow potentials.

Non-polar a-plane GaN films were grown on an r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The effect of growth temperature on structural, morphological and optical properties has been studied. The growth of non-polar a-plane (1 1 - 2 0) orientation of the GaN epilayers were confirmed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) study. The X-ray rocking curve (XRC) full width at half maximum of the (1 1 - 2 0) reflection shows in-plane anisotropic behavior and found to decrease with increase in growth temperature. The atomic force micrograph (AFM) shows island-like growth for the film grown at a lower temperature. Surface roughness has been decreased with increase in growth temperature. Room temperature photoluminescence shows near band edge emission at 3.434-3.442 eV. The film grown at 800 degrees C shows emission at 2.2 eV, which is attributed to yellow luminescence along with near band edge emission. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present an explicit solution of the problem of two coupled spin-1/2 impurities, interacting with a band of conduction electrons. We obtain an exact effective bosonized Hamiltonian, which is then treated by two different methods (low-energy theory and mean-field approach). Scale invariance is explicitly shown at the quantum critical point. The staggered susceptibility behaves like ln(T(K)/T) at low T, whereas the magnetic susceptibility and [S1.S2] are well behaved at the transition. The divergence of C(T)/T when approaching the transition point is also studied. The non-Fermi-liquid (actually marginal-Fermi-liquid) critical point is shown to arise because of the existence of anomalous correlations, which lead to degeneracies between bosonic and fermionic states of the system. The methods developed in this paper are of interest for studying more physically relevant models, for instance, for high-T(c) cuprates.

Nucleoside di- and triphosphates and adenosine regulate several components of the mucocilairy clearance process (MCC) that protects the lung against infections, via activation of epithelial purinergic receptors. However, assessing the contribution of individual nucleotides to MCC functions remains difficult due to the complexity of the mechanisms of nucleotide release and metabolism. Enzymatic activities involved in the metabolism of extracellular nucleotides include ecto-ATPases and secreted nucleoside diphosphokinase (NDPK) and adenyl kinase, but potent and selective inhibitors of these activities are sparse. In the present study, we discovered that ebselen markedly reduced NDPK activity while having negligible effect on ecto-ATPase and adenyl kinase activities. Addition of radiotracer gamma P-32]ATP to human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells resulted in rapid and robust accumulation of P-32]-inorganic phosphate ((32)Pi). Inclusion of UDP in the incubation medium resulted in conversion of gamma P-32]ATP to P-32]UTP, while inclusion of AMP resulted in conversion of gamma P-32]ATP to P-32]ADP. Ebselen markedly reduced P-32]UTP formation but displayed negligible effect on (32)Pi or P-32]ADP accumulations. Incubation of HBE cells with unlabeled UTP and ADP resulted in robust ebselen-sensitive formation of ATP (IC50=6.9 +/- 2 mu M). This NDPK activity was largely recovered in HBE cell secretions and supernatants from lung epithelial A549 cells. Kinetic analysis of NDPK activity indicated that ebselen reduced the V-max of the reaction (K-i=7.6 +/- 3 mu M), having negligible effect on KM values. Our study demonstrates that ebselen is a potent noncompetitive inhibitor of extracellular NDPK.

Transparent glasses in the system 0.5Li(2)O-0.5M(2)O-2B(2)O(3) (M = Li, Na and K) were fabricated via the conventional melt quenching technique. The amorphous and glassy nature of the samples was confirmed via the X-ray powder diffraction and the differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The frequency and temperature dependent characteristics of the dielectric relaxation and the electrical conductivity were investigated in the 100 Hz-10 MHz frequency range. The imaginary part of the electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The stretching exponent, (3, was found to be temperature independent for 0.5Li(2)O-0.5Na(2)O-2B(2)O(3) (LNBO) glasses. The activation energy associated with DC conduction was found to be higher (1.25 eV) for 0.5Li(2)O-0.5K(2)O-2B(2)O(3) (LKBO) glasses than that of the other glass systems under study. This is attributed to the mixed cation effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Soft-chemical oxidation of KTiOPO4-like KM(0.5)(V)Ti(0.5)(III)OPO(4) (M = Nb, Ta) using chlorine in CHCl3 is accompanied by partial deintercalation of potassium, yielding K(0.5)MV(0.5)Ti(0.5)(IV)OPO(4) compounds which are new non-linear optical materials that exhibit efficient second-harmonic generation of 1064 nm radiation, as does KTiOPO4.

In this paper, a plane stress solution for the interaction analysis of strip footing resting on (i) a non-homogeneous elastic half-plane and (ii) a non-homogeneous elastic layer resting on a rigid stratum has been presented. The analysis has been done using a combined analytical and FEM method in which the discretization of the half-plane is not required and thereby minimizes the computational efforts considerably. The contact pressure distribution and the settlement profile for the selected cases of varying modulus half-plane, which has more relevance to foundation engineering, have been given. Experimental verification through a photoelastic method of stress analysis has been carried out for the case of footing on Gibson elastic half-plane, and the contact pressure distribution thus obtained has been compared with the theoretical results. We present a simplified and quantitative analysis of the Seebeck coefficient in degenerate bulk and quantum well materials whose conduction band electrons obey Kane's non-parabolic energy dispersion relation. We use k.p formalism to include the effect of the overlap function due to the band non-parabolicity in the Seebeck coefficient. We also address the key issues and the conditions in which the Seebeck coefficient in quantum wells should exhibit oscillatory dependency with the film thickness under the acoustic phonon and ionized impurity scattering. The effect of screening length in degenerate bulk and quantum wells has also been generalized for the determination of ionization scattering. The well-known expressions of the Seebeck coefficient in non-degenerate wide band gap materials for both bulk and quantum wells has been obtained as a special case and this provides an indirect proof of our generalized theoretical analysis.

Mulberry fiber (Bivoltine) and non-mulberry fiber (Tassar) were subjected to stress-strain studies and the corresponding samples were examined using wide angle X-ray scattering studies. Here we have two different characteristic stress-strain curves and this has been correlated with changes in crystallite shape ellipsoids in all the fibers. Exclusive crystal structure studies of Tassar fibers show interesting feature of transformation from antiparallel chains to parallel chains.

We investigate the ground state of interacting spin-1/2 fermions in three dimensions at a finite density (rho similar to k(F)(3)) in the presence of a uniform non-Abelian gauge field. The gauge-field configuration (GFC) described by a vector lambda equivalent to (lambda(x),lambda(y),lambda(z)), whose magnitude lambda determines the gauge coupling strength, generates a generalized Rashba spin-orbit interaction. For a weak attractive interaction in the singlet channel described by a small negative scattering length (k(F)vertical bar a(s)vertical bar less than or similar to 1), the ground state in the absence of the gauge field (lambda = 0) is a BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superfluid with large overlapping pairs. With increasing gauge-coupling strength, a non-Abelian gauge field engenders a crossover of this BCS ground state to a BEC (Bose-Einstein condensate) of bosons even with a weak attractive interaction that fails to produce a two-body bound state in free vacuum (lambda = 0). For large gauge couplings (lambda/k(F) >> 1), the BEC attained is a condensate of bosons whose properties are solely determined by the Rashba gauge field (and not by the scattering length so long as it is nonzero)-we call these bosons ``rashbons.'' In the absence of interactions (a(s) = 0(-)), the shape of the Fermi surface of the system undergoes a topological transition at a critical gauge coupling lambda(T). For high-symmetry GFCs we show that the crossover from the BCS superfluid to the rashbon BEC occurs in the regime of lambda near lambda(T). In the context of cold atomic systems, these results make an interesting suggestion of obtaining BCS-BEC crossover through a route other than tuning the interaction between the fermions.

We consider the problem of compression of a non-Abelian source. This is motivated by the problem of distributed function computation, where it is known that if one is only interested in computing a function of several sources, then one can often improve upon the compression rate required by the Slepian-Wolf bound. Let G be a non-Abelian group having center Z(G). We show here that it is impossible to compress a source with symbols drawn from G when Z(G) is trivial if one employs a homomorphic encoder and a typical-set decoder. We provide achievable upper bounds on the minimum rate required to compress a non-Abelian group with non-trivial center. Also, in a two source setting, we provide achievable upper bounds for compression of any non-Abelian group, using a non-homomorphic encoder.

The optical rotatory features of the beta-structure of the polypeptides in non-aqueous solutions and films cast from these solutions have been investigated. The beta-structure of poly-S-benzyl-L-cysteine, poly-S-carbobenzoxy-L-cysteine and poly-S-benzyl-L-cysteine, poly-S-carbobenzoxy-L-cysteine and poly-O-carbo-bands of their films. The optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra of these polypeptides are found to be very similar in both film and solution. In solvents promoting the beta-structure, the polypeptides are characterized by CD troughs in the n-pi* transition region of the peptide chromophore. The ORD spectra are found to be positive in sign throughout the visible and accessible ultraviolet regions and are interpreted in terms of the possible existence of a relatively much larger positive pi-pi* CD bands as compared with the negative n-pi* band. The rotatory data obtained in the non-aqueous solution are compared with those obtained for other poly peptides in aqueous solutions, with respect to the type and extent of beta-structure present.

The specific side-chain orientations of the phenyl group in the polypeptides poly-S-benzyl-L-cysteine, poly-S-carbobenzoxy-L-cysteine and poly-O-carbobenzoxy-L-serine in the beta-structure have been studied by spectral measurements in solutions. All the three polypeptides exhibit aromatic CD bands, indicating the asymmetric placement of the side-chain phenyl rings when the polypeptide backbone takes up the antiparallel beta-structure. Supporting evidence for this is derived from n.m.r. spectra of the polypeptides, which show upfield shift of the phenyl protons due to the stacking of the aromatic rings. Molecular model building studies reveal the stacking of alternate phenyl groups along the polypeptide chain.
