The applicability of a formalism involving an exponential function of composition x1 in interpreting the thermodynamic properties of alloys has been studied. The excess integral and partial molar free energies of mixing are expressed as: $$\begin{gathered} \Delta F^{xs} = a_o x_1 (1 - x_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _1 = a_o (1 - x_1 )^2 (1 + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _2 = a_o x_1^2 (1 - b + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The equations are used in interpreting experimental data for several relatively weakly interacting binary systems. For the purpose of comparison, activity coefficients obtained by the subregular model and Krupkowski’s formalism have also been computed. The present equations may be considered to be convenient in describing the thermodynamic behavior of metallic solutions.

Nanocrystalline Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) of 8-10 nm sizes have been synthesized by hydrothermal method using melamine as complexing agent. Compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and their structures have been refined by the Rietveld method. The compounds crystallize in fluorite structure and the composition is Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 where Ru is in +4 state and Ce is in mixed-valence (+3, +4) state. Substitution of Ru4+ ion in CeO2 activated the lattice oxygen. Ce1-xRuxO2-x/2 reversibly releases 0.22[O] and 0.42[O] for x = 0.05 and 0.10, respectively, which is higher than the maximumpossible OSC of 0.22 [O] observed for Ce0.50Zr0.50O2. Utilization of Higher OSC of Ce1-xRuxO2-delta (x = 0.05 and 0.10) is also reflected in terms of low-temperature CO oxidation with these catalysts, both in the presence and absence of feed oxygen. The Ru4+ ion acts as an active center for reducing molecules (CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'') and oxide ion vacancy acts as an active center for O-2 and NO, leading to low-temperature NO conversion to N-2. Thus due to Ru4+ ion, Ce1-xRuxO2-delta is not just a high oxygen storage material but also shows high activity toward CO, hydrocarbon ``HC'' oxidation, and NO reduction by CO at low temperature with high N-2 selectivity for three-way catalysis.

A novel type of magnesium-air primary cell has been evolved which employs non-polluting and abundantly available materials. The cell is based on the scheme Mg/Mg(NO3)2, NaNO2, H20/Q(C). The magnesium anode utilization is about 90% at a current density of 20 mAcm -2. The anode has been shown to exhibit a low open-circuit corrosion, a relatively uniform pattern of corrosion and a low negative difference effect in the electrolyte developed above as compared to the conventional halide or perchlorate electrolytes. In the usual air-depolarized mode of operation, the cell has been found to be capable of continuous discharge over several months at a constant cell voltage of about 1 V and a current density of 1 mAcm -2 at the cathode. The long service-life capability arises from the formation of a protective film on the porous carbon cathode and fast sedimentation of the anodic product (magnesium hydroxide) in the electrolyte. The cell has a shelf-life in the activated state of about a year due to the low open-circuit corrosion of the anode. These favourable features suggest the practical feasibility of developing economical, long-life, non-reserve magnesium-air ceils for diverse applications using magnesium anodes with a high surface area and porous carbon-air electrodes.

Pressure dependence of the electrical resistivity of bulk, melt quenched GexTe100−x glasses (15 less-than-or-equals, slant x less-than-or-equals, slant 28) has been studied up to 8GPa pressure. All the glasses exhibit a sharp, discontinuous glass to crystal transition under pressure. The high pressure crystalline phases are identified to have a face centered cubic structure. The value of the cell constant is 0.779nm for 15 less-than-or-equals, slant x less-than-or-equals, slant 17, 0.642nm for x=20 and 0.55lnm for 22 ≤ x ≤ 28 samples respectively. The cell constants of the high pressure crystalline phases suggest the possible existance of a new metastable crystalline compound in the Ge---Te system with F.C.C. structure and cell constant equal to 1.109nm as reported by Moore et al.

New A2+Mo4+O3 oxides for A = Mn, Co and Zn crystallizing in a defect spinel structure have been prepared by hydrogen-reduction of the corresponding AMoO4 oxides. X-ray powder diffraction intensity analysis of the zinc compound indicates that the cation distribution is (Zn)t[Zn1/3Mo4/3□1/3]oO4. The defect spinels are metastable decomposing to a mixture of A2Mo3O8 and AO at high temperatures. Electrical and magnetic properties of the spinel phases are reported.

Ce0.67Cr0.33O2.11 was synthesized by hydrothermal method using diethylenetriamine as complexing agent (Chem. Mater. 2008, 20, 7268). Ce0.67Cr0.33O2.11 being the only compound likes UO2+delta to have excess oxygen, it releases a large proportion of its lattice oxygen (0.167 M [O]/mole of compound) at relatively low temperature (465 degrees C) directly and it has been utilized for generation of H-2 by thermo-splitting of water. An almost stoichiometric amount of H-2 (0.152 M/Mole of compound) is generated at much lower temperature (65 degrees C). There is an almost comparable amount of oxygen release and hydrogen generation over this material at very low temperature comparedto other CeO2-MOx (Mn, Fe, Cu, and Ni) mixed-oxide solid solutions (O-2 evolution >= 1300 degrees C and H-2 generation at 1000 degrees C). The reversible nature of oxygen release and intake of this material is attributed to its fluorite Structure and coupling between the Ce4+/Ce3+ and Cr4+/6+/Cr3+ redox couples. Compound shows reversible oxygen release and intake by H2O absorption and subsequent hydrogen release to gain parent structure and hence this material can be utilized for generation of H-2 at very low temperature by thermo-chemical splitting of water.

A low temperature polyol process, based on glycolaldehyde mediated partial reduction of FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O at 120 degrees C in the presence of sodium acetate as an alkali source and 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)-bis-(ethylamine) as an electrostatic stabilizer has been used for the gram-scale preparation of biocompatible, water-dispersible, amine functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) with an average diameter of 6 +/- 0.75 nm. With a reasonably high magnetization (37.8 e.m.u.) and amine groups on the outer surface of the nanoparticles, we demonstrated the magnetic separation and concentration implications of these ultrasmall particles in immunoassay. MRI studies indicated that these nanoparticles had the desired relaxivity for T-2 contrast enhancement in vivo. In vitro biocompatibility, cell uptake and MR imaging studies established that these nanoparticles were safe in clinical dosages and by virtue of their ultrasmall sizes and positively charged surfaces could be easily internalized by cancer cells. All these positive attributes make these functional nanoparticles a promising platform for further in vitro and in vivo evaluations.

We report formation of new noncentrosymmetric oxides of the formula, R3Mn1.5CuV0.5O9 for R = Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, possessing the hexagonal RMnO3 (space group P6(3)cm) structure. These oxides could be regarded as the x = 0.5 members of a general series R3Mn3-3xCu2xVxO9. Investigation of the Lu-Mn-Cu-V-O system reveals the existence of isostructural solid solution series, Lu3Mn3-3xCu2xVxO9 for 0 < x <= 0.75. Magnetic and dielectric properties of the oxides are consistent with a random distribution of Mn3+, Cu2+ and V5+ atoms that preserve the noncentrosymmetric RMnO3 structure. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A solid solution of the type Ba5x/2Bi(1-x)5/3Nb5O15 has been identified in the BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5 system for the first time. The limits of the solid solution are within the range 0.52 <= x <= 0.80. The compositions x = 0.52, 0.60, 0.72, 0.77, 0.78, and 0.80 were synthesized by the solid-state technique from the starting materials in stoichiometric quantities. The powder X-ray patterns of all the phases in the domain indicate a structural similarity to tetragonal tungsten bronzes (TTBs). The compositions below x = 0.52 and those above x = 0.80 exhibit barium niobate and bismuth niobate impurities, respectively. Single crystals of the composition x = 0.77 were obtained by the melt cooling technique. The crystal structure of Ba3.85/2Bi1.15/3Nb5O15 (x = 0.77) was solved in the tetragonal space group P4bm (No. 100) with a = 12.4938 (14) angstrom, c = 3.9519 (2) A, V = 616.87 (10) angstrom(3), and Z = 2 and was refined to an R index of 0.034. Dielectric measurements on all the phases indicate a typical relaxor behavior with a broad phase transition at T-m approximate to 300 K.

The compound Bi3W2O10.5 was synthesized by the solid-state technique from Bi2O3 and WO3 in stoichiometric quantities. Single crystals were grown by the melt-cooling technique and the crystal structure was solved in the tetragonal 141in space group with a = 3.839 (1) A, c = 16-3S2 (5) A, V = 241.4 (1) angstrom(3), Z = 4 and was refined to an R index of 0.0672. The structure represents a modification of the Aurivillius phase and consists of [Bi2O2](2+) units separated by WO8 polyhedra. a.c. impedance studies indicate oxide ion conductivity of 2.91 10(-5) cm(-1) at 600 degrees C.

Materials with high thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient matching with that of Si or GaAs are being used for packaging high density microcircuits due to their ability of faster heat dissipation. Al/SiC is gaining wide acceptance as electronic packaging material due to the fact that its thermal expansion coefficient can be tailored to match with that of Si or GaAs by varying the Al:SiC ratio while maintaining the thermal conductivity more or less the same. In the present work, Al/SiC microwave integrated circuit (MIC) carriers have been fabricated by pressureless infiltration of Al-alloy into porous SiC preforms in air. This new technique provides a cheaper alternative to pressure infiltration or pressureless infiltration in nitrogen in producing Al/SiC composites for electronic packaging applications. Al-alloy/65vol% SiC composite exhibited a coefficient of thermal expansion of 7 x 10(-6) K-1 (25 degrees C-100 degrees C) and a thermal conductivity of 147 Wm(-1) K-1 at 30 degrees C. The hysteresis observed in thermal expansion coefficient of the composite in the temperature range 100 degrees C-400 degrees C has been attributed to the presence of thermal residual stresses in the composite. Thermal diffusivity of the composite measured over the temperature range from 30 degrees C to 400 degrees C showed a 55% decrease in thermal diffusivity with temperature. Such a large decrease in thermal diffusivity with temperature could be due to the presence of micropores, microcracks, and decohesion of the Al/SiC interfaces in the microstructure (all formed during cooling from the processing temperature). The carrier showed satisfactory performance after integrating it into a MIC.

We demonstrate the activity of Ce0.78Sn0.2Pt0.02O2-delta, a new catalyst, towards water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Over 99.5% CO conversion to H-2 is observed at 300 +/- 25 degrees C. Based on different characterization techniques we found that the present catalyst is resistant to deactivation due to carbonate formation and sintering of Pt on the surface when subjected to longer duration of reaction conditions. The catalyst does not require any pre-treatment or activation between start-up/shut-down reaction operations. Formation of side products such as methane, methanol, formaldehyde, coke etc. was not observed under the WGS reaction conditions indicating the high selectivity of the catalyst for H-2. Temperature programmed reduction of the catalyst in hydrogen (H-2-TPR) shows reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, Sn4+ to Sn2+ and Pt4+ to Pt-0 oxidation state with oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of 3500 mu mol g(-1) at 80 degrees C. Such high value of OSC indicates the presence of highly activated lattice oxygen. CO oxidation in presence of stoichiometric O-2 shows 100% conversion to CO2 at room temperature. The catalyst also exhibits 100% selectivity for CO2 at room temperature towards preferential oxidation (PROX) of residual CO in presence of excess hydrogen in the feed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A brief survey of the historical development of a photoelectrochemical solar cell is given. The principle and future of solar chargeable battery is compared with a wet and a dry type photovoltaic cell. A solar chargeable battery, with or without a membrane and with an aqueous solution or with solid-state electrolytes is discussed. A new unique type of configuration “Sharon-Schottky” junction solar cell is described which can be used either as a charger for any secondary batteries or could be used for photoelectrolysis of water. All these configurations and their relative merits are discussed. A review on the various semiconductors and types of solar chargeable batteries is made. Finally, a conclusion is drawn for future direction of research for developing an economically viable photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cell based on either the principle of a solar charger (to charge a Ni---Cd battery or lead—acid battery) and/or solar chargeable battery with or without without a membrane. Some new innovative ideas for the preparation of materials is discussed. The entire discussion is geared towards answering a relevant question: what has gone wrong to result in the stagnation and failure in commercialization of a PEC based solar cell?
