Low-complexity near-optimal detection of signals in MIMO systems with large number (tens) of antennas is getting increased attention. In this paper, first, we propose a variant of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm which i) alleviates the stalling problem encountered in conventional MCMC algorithm at high SNRs, and ii) achieves near-optimal performance for large number of antennas (e.g., 16×16, 32×32, 64×64 MIMO) with 4-QAM. We call this proposed algorithm as randomized MCMC (R-MCMC) algorithm. Second, we propose an other algorithm based on a random selection approach to choose candidate vectors to be tested in a local neighborhood search. This algorithm, which we call as randomized search (RS) algorithm, also achieves near-optimal performance for large number of antennas with 4-QAM. The complexities of the proposed R-MCMC and RS algorithms are quadratic/sub-quadratic in number of transmit antennas, which are attractive for detection in large-MIMO systems. We also propose message passing aided R-MCMC and RS algorithms, which are shown to perform well for higher-order QAM.

Low-complexity near-optimal detection of large-MIMO signals has attracted recent research. Recently, we proposed a local neighborhood search algorithm, namely reactive tabu search (RTS) algorithm, as well as a factor-graph based belief propagation (BP) algorithm for low-complexity large-MIMO detection. The motivation for the present work arises from the following two observations on the above two algorithms: i) Although RTS achieved close to optimal performance for 4-QAM in large dimensions, significant performance improvement was still possible for higher-order QAM (e.g., 16-, 64-QAM). ii) BP also achieved near-optimal performance for large dimensions, but only for {±1} alphabet. In this paper, we improve the large-MIMO detection performance of higher-order QAM signals by using a hybrid algorithm that employs RTS and BP. In particular, motivated by the observation that when a detection error occurs at the RTS output, the least significant bits (LSB) of the symbols are mostly in error, we propose to first reconstruct and cancel the interference due to bits other than LSBs at the RTS output and feed the interference cancelled received signal to the BP algorithm to improve the reliability of the LSBs. The output of the BP is then fed back to RTS for the next iteration. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the RTS algorithm, and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and Gaussian tree approximation (GTA) algorithms.

Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has become a popular alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in multiuser communication on the uplink. This is mainly due to the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of SC-FDMA compared to that of OFDMA. Long-term evolution (LTE) uses SC-FDMA on the uplink to exploit this PAPR advantage to reduce transmit power amplifier backoff in user terminals. In this paper, we show that SC-FDMA can be beneficially used for multiuser communication on the downlink as well. We present SC-FDMA transmit and receive signaling architectures for multiuser communication on the downlink. The benefits of using SC-FDMA on the downlink are that SC-FDMA can achieve i) significantly better bit error rate (BER) performance at the user terminal compared to OFDMA, and ii) improved PAPR compared to OFDMA which reduces base station (BS) power amplifier backoff (making BSs more green). SC-FDMA receiver needs to do joint equalization, which can be carried out using low complexity equalization techniques. For this, we present a local neighborhood search based equalization algorithm for SC-FDMA. This algorithm is very attractive both in complexity as well as performance. We present simulation results that establish the PAPR and BER performance advantage of SC-FDMA over OFDMA in multiuser SISO/MIMO downlink as well as in large-scale multiuser MISO downlink with tens to hundreds of antennas at the BS.

Topological methods have been successfully used to identify features in scalar fields and to measure their importance. In this paper, we define a notion of topological saliency that captures the relative importance of a topological feature with respect to other features in its local neighborhood. Features are identified by extreme points of an input scalar field, and their importance measured by the so-called topological persistence. Computing the topological saliency of all features for varying neighborhood sizes results in a saliency plot that serves as a summary of relative importance of all topological features. We develop a convenient tool for users to interactively select and inspect features using the saliency plot. We demonstrate the use of topological saliency together with the rich information encoded in the saliency plot in several applications, including key feature identification, scalar field simplification, and feature clustering. Entanglement entropy in local quantum field theories is typically ultraviolet divergent due to short distance effects in the neighborhood of the entangling region. In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we show that surface terms in general relativity are able to capture this entanglement entropy. In particular, we demonstrate that for 1+1-dimensional (1 + 1d) conformal field theories (CFTs) at finite temperature whose gravity dual is Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, the Gibbons-Hawking-York term precisely reproduces the entanglement entropy which can be computed independently in the field theory.

Multi-site damage need to be addressed and evaluated in order to assess the integrity of aging aircraft structures. One of the problems recognized in the recent times is the effect of interaction between two or more cracks in the close neighborhood in such structures. The present paper deals with such a problem and presents numerical estimates of stress intensity factors at a crack tip in an un-stiffened curved panel with a secondary crack in the vicinity of a primary crack. The results are presented in the form of design charts. These results should be useful in evaluation in the damage tolerance evaluation of aircraft structures with multi-site damage. Cis-peptide embedded segments are rare in proteins but often highlight their important role in molecular function when they do occur. The high evolutionary conservation of these segments illustrates this observation almost universally, although no attempt has been made to systematically use this information for the purpose of function annotation. In the present study, we demonstrate how geometric clustering and level-specific Gene Ontology molecular-function terms (also known as annotations) can be used in a statistically significant manner to identify cis-embedded segments in a protein linked to its molecular function. The present study identifies novel cis-peptide fragments, which are subsequently used for fragment-based function annotation. Annotation recall benchmarks interpreted using the receiver-operator characteristic plot returned an area-under-curve >0.9, corroborating the utility of the annotation method. In addition, we identified cis-peptide fragments occurring in conjunction with functionally important trans-peptide fragments, providing additional insights into molecular function. We further illustrate the applicability of our method in function annotation where homology-based annotation transfer is not possible. The findings of the present study add to the repertoire of function annotation approaches and also facilitate engineering, design and allied studies around the cis-peptide neighborhood of proteins.
