Nuclear Overhauser effects (NOE) and circular dichroism (CD) techniques have been used to probe @-turn conformations in acyclic and cyclic peptides containingPro-Xsequences. The model peptides studied are of the type Piv-Pro-X-NHMe (X = Aib, D-Ala, Gly, Val, and Leu) and Boc-Cys-Pro-X-C s NHMe (X = Aib, L-Ala, D-Ala, Gly, and Leu). In the acyclic series, observation of NOES between Pro C"H and X-NH, together with solvent and temperature dependence of NH chemical shifts, establishes a 4 - 1 hydrogen bond stabilized type I1 @-turn in the Gly, D-Ala, and Aib peptides, in CDC13 and (CD3)2S0. A positive n-r* CD band at -225-230 nm appears to be characteristic of this structure. For the acyclic Pro-Leu peptide the observation of NOE's for both Pro and Leu C"H resonances on saturation of Leu NH is compatible with a type V bend or consecutive y-turn conformation. In the cyclic disulfide series the Pro-Aib and Pro-D-Ala peptides favor type I1 @-turns, whereas all other peptides adopt type I (111) conformations. All the cyclic disulfides exhibit an intense negative CD band at -228-230 nm. The results suggest thatgeneralcorrelations between CD spectral type and specific 0-turn conformations may not be obtained. Evidence for solvent-dependent structural changes in the Pro-Aib sequence in both cyclic and acyclic peptides is presented.

Nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) studies of the symmetrical cystine peptides (Formula: see text) (n = 1-3) in dimethylsulfoxide, have resulted in the simultaneous observation of both positive and negative NOEs. Positive NOEs are observed on the Trp C2H and C4H protons of the indole ring upon irradiation of Trp C alpha H and C beta H2 resonances in the peptides where n = 1 and 2. Negative NOEs are observed between backbone NH and C alpha H protons. The magnitudes of the observed NOEs are sensitive to changes in molecular size and solvent viscosity. The results demonstrate that NOEs may be a useful probe of sidechain segmental motion in oligopeptides.

Peptide disulfides are unstable under alkaline conditions, resulting in the formation of products containing lanthionine and polysulfied linkages. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry has been used to characterize major species obtained when cyclic and acyclic peptide disulfides are exposed to alkaline media. Studies on a model cyclic peptide disulfide (Boc - Cys - Pro - Leu - Cys - NHMe) and an acyclic peptide, oxidized glutathione, bis ((gamma)Glu Cys - Gly - COOH), are described. Disulfide cleavage reactions are initiated by the abstraction of (CH)-H-alpha or (CH)-H-beta protons of Cys residues, with Subsequent elimination of H2S or H2S2. The buildup of reactive thiol species which act on intermediates containing dehydroalanine residues, rationalizes the formation of lanthionine and polysulfide products. In the case of the cyclic peptide disulfide, the formation of cyclic products is facilitated by the intramolecular nature of the Michael addition reaction of thiols to the dehydroalanine residue. Mass spectral evidence for the intermediate species is presented by using alkylation of thiol groups as a trapping method. Mass spectral fragmentation in the negative ion mode of the peptides derived from trisulfides and tetrasulfides results in elimination of S-2. We present a simplified theory of the effective momentum mass (EMM) and ballistic current–voltage relationship in a degenerate two-folded highly asymmetric bilayer graphene nanoribbon. With an increase in the gap, the density-of-states in the lower set of subbands increases more than that of the upper set. This results in a phenomenological population inversion of carriers, which is reflected through a net negative differential conductance (NDC). It is found that with the increase of the ribbon width, the NDC also increases. The population inversion also signatures negative values of EMM above a certain ribbon-width for the lower set of subbands, which increases in a step-like manner with the applied longitudinal static bias. The well-known result for symmetric conditions has been obtained as a special case.

The two dimensional plane can be filled with rhombuses, so as to generate non-periodic tilings with 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-fold symmetries. Some representative tilings constructed using the rule of inflation are shown. The numerically computed diffraction patterns for the corresponding tilings are also shown to facilitate a comparison with possible X-ray or electron diffraction pictures.

An anomalous multiflavor chiral theory, with the gauge group SU(N), is studied using non-Abelian bosonization. The theory can be made gauge invariant by introducing Wess-Zumino fields and it is particularly simple if the Jackiw-Rajaraman parameter equals 2. In the strong-coupling limit, the low-energy effective theory only contains light unconfined fermions which interact weakly.

MNDO geometry optimizations have been carried out on a series of acyclic and cyclic unsymmetrically disubstituted carbonyl and thiocarbonyl compounds. The C=X unit shows a consistent and often sizeable tilt towards one of the substituents, following the order O > Snot, vert, similarN > C > B. Reference ab initio calculations and available experimental results support the MNDO results. The effect, which is particularly dramatic in small rings, is attributed primarily to favorable negative hyperconjugative interaction between the lone pair on X and a low lying adjacent σ* orbital. Such an interaction can lead to highly distorted structures, including perhaps to a planar molecule with an inverted sp2 carbon center.

This paper is concerned with the possibility of a direct second-order transition out of a collinear Neel phase to a paramagnetic spin liquid in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we show that such second-order quantum transitions can potentially occur to certain spin liquid states popular in theories of the cuprates. We provide a theory of this transition and study its universal properties in an epsilon expansion. The existence of such a transition has a number of interesting implications for spin-liquid-based approaches to the underdoped cuprates. In particular it considerably clarifies existing ideas for incorporating antiferromagnetic long range order into such a spin-liquid-based approach.

The dimensions of the ester unit, which is a component of the depsipeptide unit has been obtained by analysing the data on crystal structures of compounds having the ester unit. The dimensions indicate that this unit is slightly different from the peptide unit both as far as the bond length and bond angles are concerned.

By inflating basic rhombuses, with a self-similarity principle, non-periodic tiling of 2-d planes is possible with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, … -fold symmetries. As examples, non-periodic tilings with crystallographically allowed 4-fold symmetry and crystallographically forbidden 7-fold symmetry are presented in detail. The computed diffraction patterns of these tilings are also discussed.
