Two mixed boundary value problems associated with two-dimensional Laplace equation, arising in the study of scattering of surface waves in deep water (or interface waves in two superposed fluids) in the linearised set up, by discontinuities in the surface (or interface) boundary conditions, are handled for solution by the aid of the Weiner-Hopf technique applied to a slightly more general differential equation to be solved under general boundary conditions and passing on to the limit in a manner so as to finally give rise to the solutions of the original problems. The first problem involves one discontinuity while the second problem involves two discontinuities. The reflection coefficient is obtained in closed form for the first problem and approximately for the second. The behaviour of the reflection coefficient for both the problems involving deep water against the incident wave number is depicted in a number of figures. It is observed that while the reflection coefficient for the first problem steadily increases with the wave number, that for the second problem exhibits oscillatory behaviour and vanishes at some discrete values of the wave number. Thus, there exist incident wave numbers for which total transmission takes place for the second problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Arsenic pollution of water is a major problem faced worldwide. Arsenic is a suspected carcinogen in human beings and is harmful to other living beings. In the present study, a novel adsorbent was used to remove arsenate [As(V)] from synthetic solutions. The adsorbent, which is a mixture of rare earth oxides, was found to adsorb As(V) rapidly and effectively. The effect of various parameters such as contact time, initial concentration, pH, and adsorbent dose on adsorption efficiency was investigated. More than 90% of the adsorption occurred within the first 10 min and the kinetic rate constant was found to be about 3.5 mg min(-1). Adsorption efficiency was found to be dependent on the initial As(V) concentration, and the adsorption behavior followed the Langmuir adsorption model. The optimum pH was found to be 6.5. The presence of other ions such as nitrate, phosphate, sulphate, and silicate decreased the adsorption of As(V) by about 20-30%. The adsorbed As(V) could be desorbed easily by washing the adsorbent with pH 12 solution. This study demonstrates the applicability of naturally occurring rare earth oxides as selective adsorbents for As(V) from solutions.

An analysis is developed to study the unsteady mixed convection flow over a vertical cone rotating in an ambient fluid with a time-dependent angular velocity in the presence of a magnetic field. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficients in the tangential and azimuthal directions and the local Nusselt number increase with the time when the angular velocity of the-cone increases, but the reverse trend is observed for decreasing angular velocity. However, these are not mirror reflection of each other. The magnetic field reduces the skin friction coefficient in the tangential direction and also the Nusselt number, but it increases the skin friction coefficient in the azimuthal direction. The skin friction coefficients and the Nusselt number increase with the buoyancy force.

An extension to a formal verification approach of hybrid systems is proposed to verify analog and mixed signal (AMS) designs. AMS designs can be formally modeled as hybrid systems and therefore lend themselves to the formal analysis and verification techniques applied to hybrid systems. The proposed approach employs simulation traces obtained from an actual design implementation of AMS circuit blocks (for example, in the form of SPICE netlists) to carry out formal analysis and verification. This enables the same platform used for formally validating an abstract model of an AMS design, to be also used for validating its different refinements and design implementation; thereby, providing a simple route to formal verification at different levels of implementation. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a case study based on a tunnel diode oscillator. Since the device characteristic of a tunnel diode is highly non-linear with a negative resistance region, dynamic behavior of circuits in which it is employed as an element is difficult to model, analyze and verify within a general hybrid system formal verification tool. In the case study presented the formal model and the proposed computational techniques have been incorporated into CheckMate, a formal verification tool based on MATLAB and Simulink-Stateflow Framework from MathWorks.

We present a critical study of the temperature and field dependence magnetization of high temperature superconductors (HTSCs). The controversial field dependence of dM/dInB for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) (YBCO) and Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) (BSCCO) is discussed using different models. Moreover, for both the systems the magnetization (M(H)) dependence is compared with field (H) dependence. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Study of laminar boundary layer in mixed convection from vertical plates is carried out. The surface temperature along the vertical plate is assumed to vary arbitrarily with vertical distance. Perturbation technique is used to solve the governing boundary layer equations. The differentials of the wall temperature are used as perturbation elements, which are functions of vertical distance, to obtain universal functions. The universal functions are valid for any type of vertical wall temperature variation. Heat transfer rates and fluid velocity inside the boundary layer can be expressed and calculated using these universal functions. Heat transfer rates are obtained for the special cases of power-law variation of the wall temperature. The effect of the governing parameter (Gr(y)/Re-y(2)) and the power index of the power-law wall temperature variation on heat transfer rates is studied. For the purpose of validation, the mixed convection results obtained by the present technique pertaining to the special cases of isothermal vertical wall are compared with those obtained by similarity analysis reported in literature, and the agreement is found to be good. A mixed-metal metal-organic framework (MOF) compound NiMn2{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)], I, is prepared hydrothermally by replacing one of the octahedral Mn2+ ions in Mn-3{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)] by Ni2+ ions. Magnetic studies on I suggest antiferromagnetic interactions with weak canted antiferromagnetism below 8 K. On heating in flowing air I transforms to NiMn2O4 spinel at low temperature (T < 400 degrees C). The thermal decomposition of I at different temperatures results in NiMn2O4 with particle sizes in the nano regime. The nanoparticle nature of NiMn2O4 was confirmed using PXRD and TEM studies. Magnetic studies on the nanoparticles of NiMn2O4 indicate ferrimagnetism. The transition temperature of NiMn2O4 nanoparticles exhibits a direct correlation with the particle size. This study highlights the usefulness of MOF compound as a single-source precursor for the preparation of important ceramic oxides with better control on the stoichiometry and particle size.

The syntheses and characterization of some new mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes {Ni(L-1)(PPh3)] (1), Ni(L-1)(Py)] (2), Ni(L-2)(PPh3)]center dot DMSO (3), Ni(L-2)(Imz)] (4), Ni(L-3)(4-pic)] (5) and RNi(L-3))(2)(mu-4,4'-byp)]center dot 2DMSO (6)1 of three selected thiosemicarbazones the 4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazones of salicylaldehyde) (H2L1-3) (A, Scheme 1) are described in the present study, differing in the inductive effect of the substituent X (X = F, Br and OCH3), in order to observe its influence, if any, on the redox potentials and biological activity of the complexes. All the synthesized ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of four mononuclear (1-3 and 5) and one dinuclear (6) Ni(II) complex have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of these complexes and their antibacterial activities indicate that compound 4 is the potential lead molecule for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We determine the nature of coupled phonons in mixed crystal of Cs-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 using inelastic light scattering studies in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K covering a spectral range of 60-1100 cm(-1). The phase transition in this system are marked by the splitting of phonon modes, appearance of new modes and anomalies in the frequency as well as linewidth of the phonon modes near transition temperature. In particular, we observed the splitting of symmetric (v(1)) and antisymmetric (v(3)) stretching vibrations associated with AsO4 tetrahedra below transition temperature (T-c(*) similar to 110 K) attributed to the lowering of site symmetry of AsO4 in orthorhombic phase below transition temperature. In addition, the step-up (hardening) and step-down (softening) of the AsO4 bending vibrations (v(4) (S9, S11) and v(2) (S6)) below transition temperature signals the rapid development of long range ferroelectric order and proton ordering. The lowest frequency phonon (S1) mode observed at similar to 92 cm(-1) shows anomalous blue shift (similar to 12 %) from 300 K to 5 K with no sharp transition near T-c(*) unlike other observed phonon modes signaling its potential coupling with the proton tunneling mode. In this brief, the substrate noise effects of a pulsed clocking scheme on the output spur level, the phase noise, and the peak-to-peak (Pk-Pk) deterministic period jitter of an integer-N charge-pump phase-locked loop (PLL) are demonstrated experimentally. The phenomenon of noise coupling to the PLL is also explained through experiments. The PLL output frequency is 500 MHz and it is implemented in the 0.13-mu m CMOS technology. Measurements show a reduction of 12.53 dB in the PLL output spur level at an offset of 5 MHz and a reduction of 107 ps in the Pk-Pk deterministic period jitter upon reducing the duty cycle of the signal injected into the substrate from 50% to 20%. The results of the analyses suggest that using a pulsed clocking scheme for digital systems in mixed-signal integration along with other isolation techniques helps reduce the substrate noise effects on sensitive analog/radio-frequency circuits.

Bird species are hypothesized to join mixed-species flocks (flocks hereon) either for direct foraging or anti-predation-related benefits. In this study, conducted in a tropical evergreen forest in the Western Ghats of India, we used intra-flock association patterns to generate a community-wide assessment of flocking benefits for different species. We assumed that individuals needed to be physically proximate to particular heterospecific individuals within flocks to obtain any direct foraging benefit (flushed prey, kleptoparasitism, copying foraging locations). Alternatively, for anti-predation benefits, physical proximity to particular heterospecifics is not required, i.e. just being in the flock vicinity can suffice. Therefore, we used choice of locations within flocks to infer whether individual species are obtaining direct foraging or anti-predation benefits. A small subset of the bird community (5/29 species), composed of all members of the sallying guild, showed non-random physical proximity to heterospecifics within flocks. All preferred associates were from non-sallying guilds, suggesting that the sallying species were likely obtaining direct foraging benefits either in the form of flushed or kleptoparasitized prey. The majority of the species (24/29) chose locations randomly with respect to heterospecifics within flocks and, thus, were likely obtaining antipredation benefits. In summary, our study indicates that direct foraging benefits are important for only a small proportion of species in flocks and that predation is likely to be the main driver of flocking for most participants. Our findings apart, our study provides methodological advances that might be useful in understanding asymmetric interactions in social groups of single and multiple species.

Recycling plastic water bottles has become one of the major challenges world wide. The present study provides an approach for the use of plastic waste as reinforcement material in soil, which can be used for ground improvement, subbases, and subgrade preparation in road construction. The experimental results are presented in the form of stress-strain-pore water pressure response and compression paths. On the basis of experimental test results, it is observed that the strength of soil is improved and compressibility reduced significantly with the addition of a small percentage of plastic waste to the soil. In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to evaluate the response of plastic waste mixed soil. It is noted that the model captures the stress-strain and pore water pressure response of all percentages of plastic waste adequately. The paper also provides a comparative study of failure stress obtained from different published models and the proposed model, which are compared with experimental results. The improvement in strength attributable to the inclusion of plastic waste can be advantageously used in ground improvement projects.

In this paper, a numerical investigation is performed to study the mixed convective flow and heat transfer characteristics past a square cylinder in cross flow at incidence. Utilizing air (Pr = 0.71) as an operating fluid, computations are carried out at a representative Reynolds number (Re) of 100. Angles of incidences are varied as, 0 degrees <= alpha <= 45 degrees. Effect of superimposed positive and negative cross-flow buoyancy is brought about by varying the Richardson number (RI) in the range -1.0 <= Ri <= 1.0. The detail features of flow topology and heat transport are analyzed critically for different angles of incidences. The thermo fluidic forces acting on the cylinder during mixed convection are captured in terms of the drag (C-D), lift (C-L), and moment (C-M) coefficients. The results show that the lateral width of the cylinder wake reduces with increasing alpha and the isotherms spread out far wide. In the range 0 degrees < alpha < 45 degrees, C-D reduces with increasing Ri. The functional dependence of C-M with Ri reveals a linear relationship. Thermal boundary layer thickness reduces with increasing angle of incidences. The global rate of heat transfer from the cylinder increases with increasing alpha. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In response to the Indian Monsoon freshwater forcing, the Bay of Bengal exhibits a very strong seasonal cycle in sea surface salinity (SSS), especially near the mouths of the Ganges-Brahmaputra and along the east coast of India. In this paper, we use an eddy-permitting (similar to 25 km resolution) regional ocean general circulation model simulation to quantify the processes responsible for this SSS seasonal cycle. Despite the absence of relaxation toward observations, the model reproduces the main features of the observed SSS seasonal cycle, with freshest water in the northeastern Bay, particularly during and after the monsoon. The model also displays an intense and shallow freshening signal in a narrow (similar to 100 km wide) strip that hugs the east coast of India, from September to January, in good agreement with high-resolution measurements along two ships of opportunity lines. The mixed layer salt budget confirms that the strong freshening in the northern Bay during the monsoon results from the Ganges-Brahmaputra river discharge and from precipitation over the ocean. From September onward, the East India Coastal Current transports this freshwater southward along the east coast of India, reaching the southern tip of India in November. The surface freshening results in an enhanced vertical salinity gradient that increases salinity of the surface layer by vertical processes. Our results reveal that the erosion of the freshwater tongue along the east coast of India is not driven by northward horizontal advection, but by vertical processes that eventually overcome the freshening by southward advection and restore SSS to its premonsoon values. The salinity-stratified barrier layer hence only acts as a ``barrier'' for vertical heat fluxes, but is associated with intense vertical salt fluxes in the Bay of Bengal.

Motivated by the recent proposal for the S-matrix in AdS(3) x S-3 with mixed three form fluxes, we study classical folded string spinning in AdS(3) with both Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz three form fluxes. We solve the equations of motion of these strings and obtain their dispersion relation to the leading order in the Neveu-Schwarz flux b. We show that dispersion relation for the spinning strings with large spin S acquires a term given by -root lambda/2 pi b(2) log(2) S in addition to the usual root lambda/pi log S term where root lambda is proportional to the square of the radius of AdS(3). Using SO(2, 2) transformations and re-parmetrizations we show that these spinning strings can be related to light like Wilson loops in AdS(3) with Neveu-Schwarz flux b. We observe that the logarithmic divergence in the area of the light like Wilson loop is also deformed by precisely the same coefficient of the b(2) log(2) S term in the dispersion relation of the spinning string. This result indicates that the coefficient of b(2) log(2) S has a property similar to the coefficient of the log S term, known as cusp-anomalous dimension, and can possibly be determined to all orders in the coupling lambda using the recent proposal for the S-matrix.
