Application of pulsed plasma for gas cleaning is gaining prominence in recent years mainly from the energy consideration point of view. Normally, gas treatment is carried out, at or above room temperature, by a conventional dry type corona reactor. However, this treatment is still inadequate in the removal of certain stable gases present in the exhaust/flue gas mixture. The authors report some interesting results of the treatment of such stable gases with pulsed plasma at very low ambient temperature. Also reported in the paper is an improvement in DeNO/DeNOx efficiency using unconventional wet-type reactors, designed and fabricated by the authors, operating at different ambient temperatures. Apart from laboratory tests on simulated gas mixtures, field tests were also carried out on the exhaust gas of a 8 kW diesel engine. Further, an attempt was made to test the feasibility of a helical wire as a corona electrode in place of the conventional straight wire electrode. A comparative analysis of the various tests is presented together with a note on the energy consideration

This paper reports improved performance of advantages when compared to its counterpart as it is cost discharge plasma in filtered engine exhaust treatment. Our effective, low capital and operation costs, salable by- paper deals about the removal of NOX emissions from the diesel products, and integration with the existing systems. In this exhaust by electric discharge plasma. For the treatment of diesel paper we describe an alternate reactor geometry referred to exhaust a new type of reactor referred to as cross-flow dielectric as cross-flow DBD reactor, where the exhaust gas flow barrier discharge reactor has been used, where the gas flow is perpendicular to the wire-cylinder reaction chamber. This perpendicular to the corona electrode. Experiments were reactor is used to treat the actual exhaust of a 3.75 kW diesel- conducted at different flow rates ranging from 2 l/min to 10 l/ generator set. The main emphasis is laid on the NOX treatment min. The discharge plasma assisted barrier discharge reactor of diesel engine exhaust. Experiments were carried out at has shown promising results in NOX removal at high flow rates.

An in silico approach was adopted to identify potential cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors through molecular docking studies. The in vivo studies indicated that synthetic palmitoyl derivatives of salicylic acid, para amino phenol, para amino benzoic acid, and anthranilic acid possessed significant pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. None of the tested substances produced any significant gastric lesions in experimental animals. In an attempt to understand the ligandprotein interactions in terms of the binding affinity, the above synthetic molecules were subjected to docking analysis using AutoDock. The palmitoyl derivatives palmitoyl anthranilic acid, palmitoyl para amino benzoic acid, palmitoyl para amino phenol, and palmitoyl salicylic acid showed better binding energy than the known inhibitor diclofenac bound to 1PXX. All the palmitoyl derivatives made similar interactions with the binding site residues of cyclooxygenase-2 as compared to that of the known inhibitor. Thus, structure-based drug discovery approach was successfully employed to identify some promising pro-drugs for the treatment of pain and inflammation.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Medicinal plants have played an important role in treating and preventing a variety of diseases throughout the world. Khampti tribal people living in the far-flung Lohit district of the Eastern Arunachal Himalaya, India still depend on medicinal plants and most of them have a general knowledge of medicinal plants which are used for treating a variety of ailments. This survey was undertaken in Lohit district in order to inventory the medicinal plants used in folk medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: Field investigations were conducted in seventeen remote villages of Lohit district starting from April 2002 to May 2004 through interviews among 251 key informants who were selected randomly during our household survey. To elucidate community domains and determine differences in indigenous traditional knowledge of medicinal plants with anti-diabetic efficacy, we repeated our field survey starting from April 2008 to May 2010 with one hundred traditional healers locally called as ``Chau ya'' in Khampti of Lohit district. ``Chau ya'' traditional healers who know and use medicinal plants for treating diabetes mellitus were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: This study reports an ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh reputed for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Forty-six plant species were identified in the study area to treat diabetes mellitus by the Khamptis ``Chau ya'' traditional healers. Comparative published literature survey analysis of this study with other ethnobotanical surveys of plants used traditionally in treating diabetes mellitus suggests that eleven plant species make claims of new reports on antidiabetic efficacy. These plant species are Begonia roxburghii, Calamus tenuis, Callicarpa arborea, Cuscuta reflexa, Dillenia indica, Diplazium esculentum, Lectuca gracilis, Millingtonia hortensis, Oxalis griffithii, Saccharum spontaneum, and Solanum viarum. Some of the plants reported in this study have an antidiabetic effect on rodent models but none have sufficient clinical evidence of effectiveness. Conclusions: The wide variety of medicinal plants that are used to treat diabetes mellitus in this area supports the importance of plants in the primary healthcare system of the rural people of Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. The finding of new plant uses in the current study reveals the importance of the documentation of such ethnobotanical knowledge. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Heterogeneity in tumors has led to the development of combination therapies that enable enhanced cell death. Previously explored combination therapies mostly involved the use of bioactive molecules. In this work, we explored a non-conventional strategy of using carbon nanostructures (CNs) single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and graphene oxide (GO)] for potentiating the efficacy of a bioactive molecule paclitaxel (Tx)] for the treatment of lung cancer. The results demonstrated enhanced cell death following combination treatment of SWNT/GO and Tx indicating a synergistic effect. In addition, synergism was abrogated in the presence of an anti-oxidant, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and was therefore shown to be reactive oxygen species (ROS) dependent. It was further demonstrated using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation assay that treatment with CNs was associated with enhanced mitogen associated protein kinase (MAPK) activation that was ROS mediated. Hence, these results for the first time demonstrated the potential of SWNT/GO as co-therapeutic agents with Tx for the treatment of lung cancer.

We suggest a method of studying coherence in finite-level systems coupled to the environment and use it for the Hamiltonian that has been used to describe the light-harvesting pigment-protein complex. The method works with the adiabatic states and transforms the Hamiltonian to a form in which the terms responsible for decoherence and population relaxation are separated out. Decoherence is then accounted for nonperturbatively and population relaxation using a Markovian master equation. Almost analytical results can be obtained for the seven-level system, and the calculations are very simple for systems with more levels. We apply the treatment to the seven-level system, and the results are in excellent agreement with the exact numerical results of Nalbach et al. Nalbach, Braun, and Thorwart, Phys. Rev. E 84, 041926 (2011)]. Our approach is able to account for decoherence and population relaxation separately. It is found that decoherence causes only damping of oscillations and does not lead to transfer to the reaction center. Population relaxation is necessary for efficient transfer to the reaction center, in agreement with earlier findings. Our results show that the transformation to the adiabatic basis followed by a Redfield type of approach leads to results in good agreement with exact simulation.

Gene expression in living systems is inherently stochastic, and tends to produce varying numbers of proteins over repeated cycles of transcription and translation. In this paper, an expression is derived for the steady-state protein number distribution starting from a two-stage kinetic model of the gene expression process involving p proteins and r mRNAs. The derivation is based on an exact path integral evaluation of the joint distribution, P(p, r, t), of p and r at time t, which can be expressed in terms of the coupled Langevin equations for p and r that represent the two-stage model in continuum form. The steady-state distribution of p alone, P(p), is obtained from P(p, r, t) (a bivariate Gaussian) by integrating out the r degrees of freedom and taking the limit t -> infinity. P(p) is found to be proportional to the product of a Gaussian and a complementary error function. It provides a generally satisfactory fit to simulation data on the same two-stage process when the translational efficiency (a measure of intrinsic noise levels in the system) is relatively low; it is less successful as a model of the data when the translational efficiency (and noise levels) are high.

Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solders are susceptible to appreciable microstructural coarsening during storage or service. This results in evolution of joint properties over time and thereby influences the long-term reliability of microelectronic packages. Accurate reliability prediction of SAC solders requires prediction of microstructural evolution during service. Microstructure evolution in two SAC solder alloys, such as, Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC 305) and Sn-1.0Ag-0.5 Cu (SAC 105), under different thermomechanical excursions, including isothermal aging at 150 degrees C and thermomechanical cycling (TMC) was studied. In general, between 200 and 600 cycles during TMC, recrystallization of the Sn matrix was observed, along with redistribution of Ag3Sn particles because of dissolution and reprecipitation. These latter effects have not been reported before. It was also observed that the Sn grains recrystallized near precipitate clusters in eutectic channels during extended isothermal aging. The relative orientation of Sn grains in proeutectic colonies did not change during isothermal aging.

Gray water treatment and reuse is an immediate option to counter the upcoming water shortages in various parts of world, especially urban areas. Anaerobic treatment of gray water in houses is an alternative low cost, low energy and low sludge generating option that can meet this challenge. Typical problems of fluctuating VFA, low pH and sludge washout at low loading rates with gray water feedstock was overcome in two chambered anaerobic biofilm reactors using natural fibers as the biofilm support. The long term performance of using natural fiber based biofilms at moderate and low organic loading rates (OLR) have been examined. Biofilms raised on natural fibers (coir, ridge-gourd) were similar to that of synthetic media (PVC, polyethylene) at lower OLR when operated in pulse fed mode without effluent recirculation and achieved 80-90% COD removal at HRT of 2 d showing a small variability during start-up. Confocal microscopy of the biofilms on natural fibers indicated thinner biofilms, dense cell architecture and low extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS) compared to synthetic supports and this is believed to be key factor in high performance at low OLR and low strength gray water. Natural fibers are thus shown to be an effective biofilm support that withstand fluctuating characteristic of domestic gray water. (C) 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Lipid coated mesoporous silica nanoparticle (L-MSN) were synthesized for oral delivery of ciprofloxacin for intracellular elimination of Salmonella pathogen. The particle size was found to be between 50-100 nm with a lipid coat of approximately 5 nm thickness. The lipid coating was achieved by sonication of liposomes with the MSN particles and evaluated by CLSMand FTIR studies. The L-MSN particles exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to bare MSN particles. Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, loaded into the L-MSN particles showed enhanced antibacterial activity against free drug in in vitro assays. The lipid coat was found to aid in intravacuolar targeting of the drug cargo as observed by confocal microscopy studies. We also observed that a lower dose of antibiotic was sufficient to clear the pathogen from mice and increase their survivability using the L-MSN oral delivery system.

We investigated the potential of using novel zoledronic acid (ZOL)-hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticle based drug formulation in a rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. By a classical adsorption method, nanoparticles of HA loaded with ZOL (HNLZ) drug formulation with a size range of 100-130 nm were prepared. 56 female Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated at 3 months of age. Twelve weeks post surgery, rats were randomized into seven groups and treated with various doses of HNLZ (100, 50 and 25 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose), ZOL (100 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose) and HA nanoparticle (100 mu g/kg, intravenous single dose). Untreated OVX and sham OVX served as controls. After three months treatment period, we evaluated the mechanical properties of the lumbar vertebra and femoral mid-shaft. Femurs were also tested for trabecular microarchitecture. Sensitive biochemical markers of bone formation and bone resorption in serum were also determined. With respect to improvement in the mechanical strength of the lumbar spine and the femoral mid-shaft, the therapy with HNLZ drug formulation was more effective than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. Moreover, HNLZ drug therapy preserved the trabecular microarchitecture better than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. Furthermore, the HNLZ drug formulation corrected increase in serum levels of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide, osteocalcin, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b and C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen better than ZOL therapy in OVX rats. The results strongly suggest that HNLZ novel drug formulation appears to be more effective approach for treating severe osteoporosis in humans. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Protein therapeutics targeting inflammatory mediators have shown great promise for the treatment of autoimmunities such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, a significant challenge in this area has been their low in vivo stability and consequently their severely compromised therapeutic efficacy. One such therapeutic molecule IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, has displayed only modest efficacy in human clinical trials owing to its short biological half-life. Herein, we report a novel approach to conglomerate individual protein entities into a drug depot by incorporation of an amyloidogenic motif Lys-Phe-Phe-Glu (KFFE) thereby dramatically improving their systemic persistence and in turn their therapeutic efficacy in a mice model of autoimmune arthritis. Objectives: Disuse by bed rest, limb immobilization or space flight causes rapid bone loss. We conducted the present study to investigate the therapeutic effects of zoledronic acid (ZOL), alone and in combination with alfacalcidol (ALP) in a rat model of disuse osteoporosis. Methods: In the present study, 3-month-old male Wistar rats had their right hind-limb immobilized (RHLI) for 10 weeks to induce osteopenia, then were divided into four groups: 1 - RHLI positive control; 2 - RHLI plus ZOL (50 mu g/kg, i.v. single dose); 3 - RHLI plus ALP (0.5 mu g/kg, oral gauge daily); 4- RHLI plus ALP (0.5 mu g/kg, oral gauge daily) plus ZOL (50 mu g/kg, i.v. single dose) for another 10 weeks. One group of non-immobilized rats was used as negative control. At the end of the treatment, the femurs were removed and tested for bone porosity, bone mechanical properties, and bone dry and ash weight. Results: Combination therapy with ZOL plus ALP was more effective in decreasing bone porosity than each drug administered as monotherapy in RHLI rats. With respect to improvement in the mechanical strength of the femoral mid-shaft, the combination treatment of ZOL plus ALP was more effective than each drug administered as a monotherapy. Moreover, combination therapy using ZOL plus ALF was more effective in improving dry bone and ash weight, than single-drug therapy using ZOL or ALP in RHLI rats. Conclusions: These data suggest that combination therapy with ZOL plus ALP represents a potentially useful therapeutic option for the treatment of disuse osteoporosis. (C) 2014 Elsevier Editora Ltda.
