A new design for the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements is presented. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between the reference and working electrodes, is to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevents polarization of the measuring electrode and ensures accurate data. The application of this novel design and its advantages are demonstrated by measurement of the standard Gibbs energies of formation of Nd6Ir2O13 (low-temperature form) and Nd2Ir2O7 in the temperature range from 975 to 1450 K. Yttria-stabilized zirconia is used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. For the design of appropriate working electrodes, phase relations in the ternary system NdIrO were investigated at 1350 K. The two ternary oxides, Nd6Ir2O13 and Nd2Ir2O7, compositions of which fall on the join Nd2O3IrO2, were found to coexist with pure metal Ir. Therefore, two working electrodes were prepared consisting of mixtures of Ir+Nd2O3+Nd6Ir2O13 and Ir+Nd6Ir2O13+ Nd2Ir2O7. These mixtures unambiguously define unique oxygen chemical potentials under isothermal and isobaric conditions. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (ΔG°f (ox)) of the compounds from their component binary oxides Nd2O3 and IrO2, obtained from the emf of the cells, can be represented by the equations:View the MathML source View the MathML source Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system NdIrO are developed.

An isothermal section of the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K has been established by equilibrating 22 samples of different compositions at high temperature and phase identification by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy after quenching to room temperature. Only one quaternary oxide, Ca3CoAl4O10, was identified inside the ternary triangle. Based on the phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell was designed to measure the Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 in the temperature range from 1150 to 1500 K. Calcia-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and a mixture of Co + CoO as the reference electrode. The cell can be represented as: ( - )\textPt,\textCaAl 2 \textO 4 + \textCa 1 2 \textAl 1 4 \textO 3 3 + \textCa 3 \textCoAl 4 \textO 10 + \textCo//(CaO)ZrO 2 \text// \textCoO + \textCo,\text Pt ( + ). (−)PtCaAl2O4+Ca12Al14O33+Ca3CoAl4O10+Co//(CaO)ZrO2//CoO+Co Pt (+) From the emf of the cell, the standard Gibbs energy change for the Ca3CoAl4O10 formation reaction, CoO + 3/5CaAl2O4 + 1/5Ca12Al14O33 → Ca3CoAl4O10, is obtained as a function of temperature: \Updelta Gr\texto Unknown control sequence '\Updelta'/J mol−1 (±50) = −2673 + 0.289 (T/K). The standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 from its component binary oxides, Al2O3, CaO, and CoO is derived as a function of temperature. The standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 at 298.15 K are evaluated. Chemical potential diagrams for the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K are presented based on the results of this study and auxiliary information from the literature.

Computational studies of the transient stability of a synchronous machine connected to an infinite busbar by a double-circuit transmission line are used to illustrate the effect of relative phase-shift insertion between the machine and its associated power system. This method of obtaining a change in the effective rotor-excitation angle, and thereby the power transfer, is described, together with an outline of possible methods of implementation by a phase-shifting transformer in a power system.

Pure stoichiometric MgRh(2)O(4) could not be prepared by solid state reaction from an equimolar mixture of MgO and Rh(2)O(3) in air. The spinel phase formed always contained excess of Mg and traces of Rh or Rh(2)O(3). The spinel phase can be considered as a solid solution of Mg(2)RhO(4) in MgRh(2)O(4). The compositions of the spinel solid solution in equilibrium with different phases in the ternary system Mg-Rh-O were determined by electron probe microanalysis. The oxygen potential established by the equilibrium between Rh + MgO + Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4) was measured as a function of temperature using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte and pure oxygen at 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. To avoid polarization of the working electrode during the measurements, an improved design of the cell with a buffer electrode was used. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of MgRh(2)O(4) and Mg(2)RhO(4) were deduced from the measured electromotive force (e.m.f.) by invoking a model for the spinel solid solution. The parameters of the model were optimized using the measured composition of the spinel solid solution in different phase fields and imposed oxygen partial pressures. The results can be summarized by the equations: MgO + beta -Rh(2)O(3) -> MgRh(2)O(4); Delta G degrees (+ 1010)/J mol(-1) = -32239 + 7.534T; 2MgO + RhO(2) -> Mg(2)RhO(4); Delta G degrees(+/- 1270)/J mol(-1) = 36427 -4.163T; Delta G(M)/J mol(-1) = 2RT(xInx + (1-x)In(1-x)) + 4650x(1-x), where Delta G degrees is the standard Gibbs free energy change for the reaction and G(M) is the free energy of mixing of the spinel solid solution Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4). In order to overcome the interference of the model mounting system with the external aerodynamics of the body during shock tunnel testing, a new free floating internally mountable balance system that ensures unrestrained model motion during testing has been designed, fabricated and tested. Minimal friction ball bearings are used for ensuring the free floating condition of the model during tunnel testing. The drag force acting on a blunt leading edge flat plate at hypersonic Mach number has been measured using the new balance system. Finite element model (FEM) and CFD are exhaustively used in the design as well as for calibrating the new balance system. The experimentally measured drag force on the blunt leading edge flat plate at stagnation enthalpy of 0.7 and 1.2 MJ/kg and nominal Mach number of 5.75 matches well with FEM results. The concept can also be extended for measuring all the three fundamental aerodynamic forces in short duration test facilities like free piston driven shock tunnels.

We show that it is possible to change from a subnatural electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) feature to a subnatural electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) feature in a (degenerate) three-level. system. The change is effected by turning on a second control beam counter-propagating with respect to the first beam. We observe this change in the D-2 line of Rb in a room temperature vapor cell. The observations are supported by density-matrix analysis of the complete sublevel structure including the effect of Doppler averaging, but can be understood qualitatively as arising due to the formation of N-type systems with the two control beams. Since many of the applications of EIT and EIA rely on the anomalous dispersion near the resonances, this introduces a new ability to control the sign of the dispersion. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2012

An all-digital technique is proposed for generating an accurate delay irrespective of the inaccuracies of a controllable delay line. A subsampling technique-based delay measurement unit (DMU) capable of measuring delays accurately for the full period range is used as the feedback element to build accurate fractional period delays based on input digital control bits. The proposed delay generation system periodically measures and corrects the error and maintains it at the minimum value without requiring any special calibration phase. Up to 40x improvement in accuracy is demonstrated for a commercial programmable delay generator chip. The time-precision trade-off feature of the DMU is utilized to reduce the locking time. Loop dynamics are adjusted to stabilize the delay after the minimum error is achieved, thus avoiding additional jitter. Measurement results from a high-end oscilloscope also validate the effectiveness of the proposed system in improving accuracy.

An automated geo-hazard warning system is the need of the hour. It is integration of automation in hazard evaluation and warning communication. The primary objective of this paper is to explain a geo-hazard warning system based on Internet-resident concept and available cellular mobile infrastructure that makes use of geo-spatial data. The functionality of the system is modular in architecture having input, understanding, expert, output and warning modules. Thus, the system provides flexibility in integration between different types of hazard evaluation and communication systems leading to a generalized hazard warning system. The developed system has been validated for landslide hazard in Indian conditions. It has been realized through utilization of landslide causative factors, rainfall forecast from NASA's TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and knowledge base of landslide hazard intensity map and invokes the warning as warranted. The system evaluated hazard commensurate with expert evaluation within 5-6 % variability, and the warning message permeability has been found to be virtually instantaneous, with a maximum time lag recorded as 50 s, minimum of 10 s. So it could be concluded that a novel and stand-alone system for dynamic hazard warning has been developed and implemented. Such a handy system could be very useful in a densely populated country where people are unaware of the impending hazard.

A new bis-indolyl-based colorimetric probe has been synthesized. This allows a Michael-type adduct formation for the detection of cyanide ions. The probe shows a remarkable color change from red to colorless upon addition of the cyanide ions in pure water. The cyanide ion reacts with the probe and removes the conjugation of the bis-indolyl moiety of the probe with that of the 4-substituted aromatic ring. This renders the probe colorless. The mechanism of the reaction of the probe with the cyanide ion was established by using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and kinetic studies.

The role of Bi layer (thickness similar to 7 nm) on As2S3 film was extensively studied for different optical applications in which Bi (top layer) as active and diffusing layer and As2S3 as barrier (matrix) layer. Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. The decrease of optical band gap with the addition of Bi to As2S3 has been explained on the basis of density of states and the increase in disorder in the system. It was found that the efficient changes of optical parameters (transmission, optical band gap, refraction) could be realized due to the photo induced diffusion activated by the focused 532 nm laser irradiation and formation of different bonds. The diffusion of Bi into As2S3 matrix increases the optical band gap producing photo bleaching effect. The changes were characterised by different experimental techniques. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Climate change would significantly affect many hydrologic systems, which in turn would affect the water availability, runoff, and the flow in rivers. This study evaluates the impacts of possible future climate change scenarios on the hydrology of the catchment area of the TungaBhadra River, upstream of the Tungabhadra dam. The Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System version 3.4 (HEC-HMS 3.4) is used for the hydrological modelling of the study area. Linear-regression-based Statistical DownScaling Model version 4.2 (SDSM 4.2) is used to downscale the daily maximum and minimum temperature, and daily precipitation in the four sub-basins of the study area. The large-scale climate variables for the A2 and B2 scenarios obtained from the Hadley Centre Coupled Model version 3 are used. After model calibration and testing of the downscaling procedure, the hydrological model is run for the three future periods: 20112040, 20412070, and 20712099. The impacts of climate change on the basin hydrology are assessed by comparing the present and future streamflow and the evapotranspiration estimates. Results of the water balance study suggest increasing precipitation and runoff and decreasing actual evapotranspiration losses over the sub-basins in the study area.

Thermodynamic properties of Ca7V4O17 are measured for the first time using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating single crystal of CaF2 as the electrolyte over the temperature range from (900 to 1175) K. An equimolar mixture of CaO and CaF2 is used as the reference electrode and a mixture of Ca3V2O8, Ca7V4O17 and CaF2 as the measuring electrode. Both the electrodes are placed under flowing oxygen gas at ambient pressure. The standard Gibbs energy change for the reaction: 2Ca(3)V(2)O(8) + CaO -> Ca7V4O17; which is related to the chemical potential of CaO in the two-phase region (Ca3V2O8 + Ca7V4O17) of the pseudo-binary system CaO + V2O5, is obtained from the electromotive force of the cell as: Delta(r)G(o) +/- 127/(J . mol(-1)) = Delta mu(CaO) = -11453 + 8.273(T/K). The derived standard enthalpy of formation of Ca7V4O17 from elements in their normal standard states is ( 8208.97 +/- 8) kJ . mol (1) and its standard entropy is (560.05 +/- 7.5) J . K (1) . mol (1), both at T = 298.15 K. The results indicate that Ca7V4O17 decomposes into Ca3V2O8 and CaO at T = (1384 +/- 3) K.

Daily rainfall datasets of 10 years (1998-2007) of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) version 6 and India Meteorological Department (IMD) gridded rain gauge have been compared over the Indian landmass, both in large and small spatial scales. On the larger spatial scale, the pattern correlation between the two datasets on daily scales during individual years of the study period is ranging from 0.4 to 0.7. The correlation improved significantly (similar to 0.9) when the study was confined to specific wet and dry spells each of about 5-8 days. Wavelet analysis of intraseasonal oscillations (ISO) of the southwest monsoon rainfall show the percentage contribution of the major two modes (30-50 days and 10-20 days), to be ranging respectively between similar to 30-40% and 5-10% for the various years. Analysis of inter-annual variability shows the satellite data to be underestimating seasonal rainfall by similar to 110 mm during southwest monsoon and overestimating by similar to 150 mm during northeast monsoon season. At high spatio-temporal scales, viz., 1 degrees x1 degrees grid, TMPA data do not correspond to ground truth. We have proposed here a new analysis procedure to assess the minimum spatial scale at which the two datasets are compatible with each other. This has been done by studying the contribution to total seasonal rainfall from different rainfall rate windows (at 1 mm intervals) on different spatial scales (at daily time scale). The compatibility spatial scale is seen to be beyond 5 degrees x5 degrees average spatial scale over the Indian landmass. This will help to decide the usability of TMPA products, if averaged at appropriate spatial scales, for specific process studies, e.g., cloud scale, meso scale or synoptic scale.

Interdiffusion, intrinsic, tracer and impurity diffusion coefficients are calculated in the Pd-Pt system. Interdiffusion coefficients are more or less insensitive to composition change. Activation energy varies in the range of 324-353 kJ/mol. Impurity diffusion coefficients calculated in this study and available tracer diffusion coefficients in pure elements indicate that Pd has higher diffusion rate compared to Pt in pure Pd, whereas, both the elements have similar diffusion rates in Pt. Kirkendall marker experiments indicate that Pd has much higher diffusion rate in Pd3.5at.%Pt compared to Pt.

This paper presents the design and development of a novel optical vehicle classifier system, which is based on interruption of laser beams, that is suitable for use in places with poor transportation infrastructure. The system can estimate the speed, axle count, wheelbase, tire diameter, and the lane of motion of a vehicle. The design of the system eliminates the need for careful optical alignment, whereas the proposed estimation strategies render the estimates insensitive to angular mounting errors and to unevenness of the road. Strategies to estimate vehicular parameters are described along with the optimization of the geometry of the system to minimize estimation errors due to quantization. The system is subsequently fabricated, and the proposed features of the system are experimentally demonstrated. The relative errors in the estimation of velocity and tire diameter are shown to be within 0.5% and to change by less than 17% for angular mounting errors up to 30 degrees. In the field, the classifier demonstrates accuracy better than 97.5% and 94%, respectively, in the estimation of the wheelbase and lane of motion and can classify vehicles with an average accuracy of over 89.5%.
