Algorithms for planning quasistatic attitude maneuvers based on the Jacobian of the forward kinematic mapping of fully-reversed (FR) sequences of rotations are proposed in this paper. An FR sequence of rotations is a series of finite rotations that consists of initial rotations about the axes of a body-fixed coordinate frame and subsequent rotations that undo these initial rotations. Unlike the Jacobian of conventional systems such as a robot manipulator, the Jacobian of the system manipulated through FR rotations is a null matrix at the identity, which leads to a total breakdown of the traditional Jacobian formulation. Therefore, the Jacobian algorithm is reformulated and implemented so as to synthesize an FR sequence for a desired rotational displacement. The Jacobian-based algorithm presented in this paper identifies particular six-rotation FR sequences that synthesize desired orientations. We developed the single-step and the multiple-step Jacobian methods to accomplish a given task using six-rotation FR sequences. The single-step Jacobian method identifies a specific FR sequence for a given desired orientation and the multiple-step Jacobian algorithm synthesizes physically feasible FR rotations on an optimal path. A comparison with existing algorithms verifies the fast convergence ability of the Jacobian-based algorithm. Unlike closed-form solutions to the inverse kinematics problem, the Jacobian-based algorithm determines the most efficient FR sequence that yields a desired rotational displacement through a simple and inexpensive numerical calculation. The procedure presented here is useful for those motion planning problems wherein the Jacobian is singular or null.

Infrared spectra of N-acetylthiourea (ATU) and its N,N,N′-trideuterated compound have been examined in the range 4000–50 cm−1. A complete vibrational assignment with a normal coordinate treatment based on a Urey-Bradley type intramolecular potential function supplemented with valence force function for the out of plane and torsional modes is proposed and the feature of the thioureido vibrations explained. A molecular orbital study by the CNDO/2 method of ATU and its oxygen analog is undertaken and the results are analyzed for a comparative study of the molecular electronic structure and conformation.

Principal component analysis is applied to derive patterns of temporal variation of the rainfall at fifty-three stations in peninsular India. The location of the stations in the coordinate space determined by the amplitudes of the two leading eigenvectors is used to delineate them into eight clusters. The clusters obtained seem to be stable with respect to variations in the grid of stations used. Stations within any cluster occur in geographically contiguous areas.

The infrared spectra of symmetric N,N′-dimethylthiourea (s-DMTU) and its N-deuterated (s-DMTU-d2) species have been measured. The fundamental frequencies have been assigned by comparison with the assignments in structurally related molecules and the infrared band shifts on N-deuteration, S-methylation, available Raman data and with the aid of theoretical band assignments from normal coordinate treatments for s-DMTU-d0 and -d2. A force field is derived for s-DMTU by transferring the force constants chiefly from N-methylthiourea and the subsequent refinement of the force constants by a least squares procedure.

A relay network with N relays and a single source-destination pair is called a partially-coherent relay channel (PCRC) if the destination has perfect channel state information (CSI) of all the channels and the relays have only the phase information of the source-to-relay channels. In this paper, first, a new set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a space-time block code (STBC) to be single-symbol decodable (SSD) for colocated multiple antenna communication is obtained. Then, this is extended to a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a distributed STBC (DSTBC) to be SSD for. a PCRC. Using this, several SSD DSTBCs for PCRC are identified. It is proved that even if a SSD STBC for a co-located MIMO channel does not satisfy the additional conditions for the code to be SSD for a PCRC, single-symbol decoding of it in a PCRC gives full-diversity and only coding gain is lost. It is shown that when a DSTBC is SSD for a PCRC, then arbitrary coordinate interleaving of the in-phase and quadrature-phase components of the variables does not disturb its SSD property for PCRC. Finally, it is shown that the possibility of channel phase compensation operation at the relay nodes using partial CSI at the relays increases the possible rate of SSD DSTBCs from (2)/(N) when the relays do not have CSI to(1)/(2), which is independent of N.

The emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) clouds in the post-reionization era (z <= 6), too faint to be individually detected, is present as a diffuse background in all low frequency radio observations below 1420MHz. The angular and frequency fluctuations of this radiation (similar to 1 mK) are an important future probe of the large-scale structures in the Universe. We show that such observations are a very effective probe of the background cosmological model and the perturbed Universe. In our study we focus on the possibility of determining the redshift-space distortion parameter beta, coordinate distance r(nu), and its derivative with redshift r(nu)('). Using reasonable estimates for the observational uncertainties and configurations representative of the ongoing and upcoming radio interferometers, we predict parameter estimation at a precision comparable with supernova Ia observations and galaxy redshift surveys, across a wide range in redshift that is only partially accessed by other probes. Future HI observations of the post-reionization era present a new technique, complementing several existing ones, to probe the expansion history and to elucidate the nature of the dark energy.

Any (N+M)-parameter Lie group G with an N-parameter subgroup H can be realized as a global group of diffeomorphisms on an M-dimensional base space B, with representations in terms of transformation laws of fields on B belonging to linear representations of H. The gauged generalization of the global diffeomorphisms consists of general diffeomorphisms (or coordinate transformations) on a base space together with a local action of H on the fields. The particular applications of the scheme to space-time symmetries is discussed in terms of Lagrangians, field equations, currents, and source identities. A k-dimensional box is the Cartesian product R-1 x R-2 x ... x R-k where each R-i is a closed interval on the real line. The boxicity of a graph G, denoted as box(G) is the minimum integer k such that G is the intersection graph of a collection of k-dimensional boxes. Halin graphs are the graphs formed by taking a tree with no degree 2 vertex and then connecting its leaves to form a cycle in such a way that the graph has a planar embedding. We prove that if G is a Halin graph that is not isomorphic to K-4, then box(G) = 2. In fact, we prove the stronger result that if G is a planar graph formed by connecting the leaves of any tree in a simple cycle, then box(G) = 2 unless G is isomorphic to K4 (in which case its boxicity is 1).

Infrared spectra are recorded for S-methyl dithiocarbazate and its N-deuterated compound in two molecular conformations in the solid state and in solution between 4000 and 30 cm−1. The assignments have been supported from a complete normal coordinate analysis; the conformation sensitive bands of the –CSNHNH2 grouping are discussed. The assignments are compared with those of related molecules to check the internal consistency and to obtain the pattern of the characteristic bands of thiocarbazoyl (–CSNHNH2) group. The magnitudes of the C–N and S–CH3 torsional barriers are estimated from the force constants.

Aircraft pursuit-evasion encounters in a plane with variable speeds are analysed as a differential game. An engagement-dependent coordinate system confers open-loop optimality on the game. Each aircraft's optimal motion can be represented by extremel trajectory maps which are independent of role, adversary and capture radius. These maps are used in two different ways to construct the feedback solution. Some examples are given to illustrate these features. The paper draws on earlier results and surveys several existing papers on the subject.

The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stably stratified, compressible fluid in the presence of a lower rigid boundary are studied. A jump in the Brunt-Vaisala frequency at a level different from the shear zone is introduced and the variation of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency with respect to the vertical coordinate in the middle layer of the three-layered model is considered. An analytic solution in each of the layers is obtained, and the dispersion relation is solved numerically for parameters relevant to the model. The effect of shear in the lowermost layer of the three-layered model for a Boussinesq fluid is discussed. The results are compared with the earlier studies of Lindzen and Rosenthal, and Sachdev and Satya Narayanan. In the present model, new unstable modes with larger growth rates are obtained and the most unstable gravity wave modes are found to agree closely with the observed ones at various heights. Raman and infrared spectra of imidazoline-2-thione (IMZT) and imidazoline-2-one (IMZO) have been recorded. Normal coordinate analyses have been performed for all the fundamental vibrations of IMZT, IMZT-d2 and IMZO employing a Urey—Bradley potential function supplemented with valence type force constants for the out of plane modes. The results of the vibrational analyses are discussed in relation to the assignments in related molecules. The vibrational assignments for IMZT and IMZO have been compared with those in structurally similar molecules and the need to obtain more reliable band assignments for some of the molecules considered is emphasised.

The Raman and infrared spectra of N-(2-pyridyl) thioformamide and N-(2-pyridyl)-thioacetamide have been measured. The assignment of the bands is aided by the complete normal coordinate treatment for all the vibrations of N-(2-pyridyl)thioformamide and its N-deuterated molecule using a Urey—Bradley force function for the in-plane vibrations and a valence force function for the out of plane vibrations. Variable temperature 1H NMR study of the two pyridylthionamides has also been performed. It is inferred that while N-(2-pyridyl)thioformamide favours a cis —CSNH— group, the other compound favours a trans —CSNH— grouping at ambient temperature.

New complexes of lanthanide perchlorates with 2-N-(pyridyl) benzamide (PyBA) of the type Ln(PyBA)3(ClO4)3 where Ln = Y and La---Yb have been synthesised and characterised by analyses, conductance, IR, 13C NMR (for diamagnetic complexes only) and electronic spectra. The molar conductance and IR data point to the ionic nature of the perchlorate groups in the complexes. IR data along with the 13C NMR data unequivocally proves that the coordination of the ligand to the metal ions taken place in a bidentate fashion through the oxygen of the benzamide group and the nitrogen of the heterocyclic ring. From a comparison of the visible electronic spectral shapes of the Nd3+, Ho3+ and Er3+ complexes with those reported in the literature, a 6-coordinate geometry around the metal ion has been assigned in all the complexes.

Molar conductance and infrared data point to the ionic nature of the per-chlorate groups in the complexes. IR data unequivocally proves that the coordination of the ligand to the metal ion takes place in a bidentate fashion through the oxygen of the secondary amide and nitrogen of the pyrimidine ring. From a comparison of the visible electronic spectral shapes of the Nd3+ and Ho3+ complexes with those reported in the literature, an eight coordinate geometry around the metal ion has tentatively been assigned in all the complexes.
