We report the synthesis and aggregation behaviour of new water-soluble, bile acid derived tripodal architectures based on a core derived from triphenylphosphine oxide. We employed the well-established copper-catalysed 1,3]-dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC) for the construction of these tripodal molecules. The aggregation behaviour of these molecules in aqueous media was studied by different analytical methods such as dye solubilisation, dynamic light scattering, NMR and AFM. These molecular architectures also offer an additional advantage in aiding understanding of the influence of the nature of the bile acid backbone and of the configuration at the steroid C-3 position in these architectures; to the best of our knowledge this has not been reported in the literature. The unique gelation properties of the -derivatives were explained through molecular modelling studies and the mechanical behaviour of these gels was studied by rheology experiments.

A model has been developed to simulate the foam characteristics obtained, when chemical (water) and physical (Freon) blowing agents are used together for the formation of polyurethane foams. The model considers the rate of reaction, the consequent rise in temperature of the reaction mixture, nucleation of bubbles, and mass transfer of CO2 and Freon to them till the time of gelation. The model is able to explain the experimental results available in literature. It further predicts that the nucleation period gets reduced with increase in water (at constant Freon content), whereas with increase in Freon (at constant water) concentration nucleation period decreases marginally leading to narrower bubble-size distribution. By the use of uniform sized nuclei added initially, the model predicts that the bubble-size distribution can be made independent of the rate of homogeneous nucleation and can, thus, offer an extra parameter for its control. pH-sensitive photonic composite hydrogel beads composed of sodium alginate and risedronate sodium (SA/RIS) was prepared crosslinked by Ca2+ owing to the ionic gelation of SA. The structure and surface morphology of the composite hydrogel beads were characterized by SEM. pH-sensitivity of these composite hydrogels beads and the release behaviors of drug from them were investigated. The results showed that the composite hydrogel beads had good pH-sensitivity. The drug loading and encapsulation efficiency were 27.7% and 92% for RIS, respectively. The cumulative release ratios of RIS from the composite hydrogel beads were 2.47% in pH 2.1 solution and 83 % in pH 6.8 solutions within 24 h, respectively. However, the cumulative release ratio of RIS in pH 7.4 solution reached 91% within 7 h. It is proposed that the novel photonic SA/RIS composite hydrogel bead could possess the potential of an increased intestinal absorption and fewer adverse effects of RIS. The pH and salt response of photonic hydrogel bead, as well as the encapsulation of macromolecules, are promising for applications in biomedicine and biotechnology.

A Cu2+-selective metallo(hydro) gelation of a p-pyridyl ended oligophenylenevinylene system is reported over its respective meta- and ortho-regioisomers. The metallogel formed via the self-assembly of the nanoscale-metal-organic particles is injectable and also shows multi-stimuli responsiveness, including thixotropy.

The remarkable capability of nature to design and create excellent self-assembled nano-structures, especially in the biological world, has motivated chemists to mimic such systems with synthetic molecular and supramolecular systems. The hierarchically organized self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) based on non-covalent interactions has been proven to be a useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructures. Among these, the self-assembly of sugar-derived LMWGs has received immense attention because of their propensity to furnish biocompatible, hierarchical, supramolecular architectures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. This review sheds light on various aspects of sugar-derived LMWGs, uncovering their mechanisms of gelation, structural analysis, and tailorable properties, and their diverse applications such as stimuli-responsiveness, sensing, self-healing, environmental problems, and nano and biomaterials synthesis.

Fabricating supramolecular hydrogels with embedded metal nanostructures is important for the design of novel hybrid nanocomposite materials for diverse applications such as biosensing and chemosensing platforms, catalytic and antibacterial functional materials etc. Supramolecular self-assembly of bile acid-dipeptide conjugates has led to the formation of new supramolecular hydrogels. Gelation of these molecules depends strongly on the hydrophobic character of the bile acids. The possibility of in situ fabrication of Ag and Au NPs in these supramolecular hydrogels by incorporating Ag+ and Au3+ salts was investigated via photoreduction. Chemical reductions of Ag+ and Au3+ salts in the hydrogels were performed without adding any external stabilizing agents. In this report we have shown that the color, size and shape of silver nanoparticles formed by photoreduction depend on the amino acid residue of the side chain.
