In this paper we discuss a new technique to image the surfaces of metallic substrates using field emission from a pointed array of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We consider a pointed height distribution of the CNT array under a diode configuration with two side gates maintained at a negative potential to obtain a highly intense beam of electrons localized at the center of the array. The CNT array on a metallic substrate is considered as the cathode and the test substrate as the anode. Scanning the test Substrate with the cathode reveals that the field emission current is highly sensitive to the surface features with nanometer resolution. Surface features of semi-circular, triangular and rectangular geometries (projections and grooves) are considered for simulation. This surface scanning/mapping technique can be applied for surface roughness measurements with nanoscale accuracy. micro/nano damage detection, high precision displacement sensors, vibrometers and accelerometers. among other applications.

In this paper, we propose a new security metric for measuring resilience of a symmetric key distribution scheme in wireless sensor network. A polynomial-based and a novel complete connectivity schemes are proposed and an analytical comparison, in terms of security and connectivity, between the schemes is shown. Motivated by the schemes, we derive general expressions for security and connectivity. A number of conclusions are made using these general expressions.

End-tethered chains made of an adsorbed diblock copolymer of polystyrene (PS)-polyisoprene (PI) bearing an end-segment including a Ge atom are built by the Langmuir-Schaeffer technique. They are studied both in the dry state and in a good solvent for the PI chain using grazing incidence X-ray standing waves. The analysis of the signal provides a direct measurement of the end-segment distribution which is found to be singular and mostly localized to a plane in the dry case. In the good solvent case, end-segments are found to span the entire assembly and compare very well with results obtained by Kreer et al.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of pulmonary tuberculosis, infects one-third of the world's population. Activation of host immune responses for containment of mycobacterial infections involves participation of innate immune cells, such as dendritic cells (DCs). DCs are sentinels of the immune system and are important for eliciting both primary and secondary immune responses to pathogens. In this context, to understand the molecular pathogenesis of tuberculosis and host response to mycobacteria and to conceive prospective vaccine candidates, it is important to understand how cell wall Ags of M.tuberculosis and, in particular, the proline-glutamic acid-polymorphicguanine-cytosine-rich sequence (PE_PGRS) family of proteins modulate DC maturation and function. In this study, we demonstrate that two cell wall-associated/secretory PE_PGRS proteins, PE_PGRS 17 (Rv0978c) and PE_PGRS 11 (Rv0754), recognize TLR2, induce maturation and activation of human DCs, and enhance the ability of DCs to stimulate CD4(+) T cells. We further found that PE_PGRS protein-mediated activation of DCs involves participation of ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and NF-kappa B signaling pathways. Priming of human DCs with IFN-gamma further augmented PE_PGRS 17 or PE_PGRS 11 Ag-induced DC maturation and secretion of key proinflammatory cytokines. Our results suggest that by activating DCs, PE_PGRS proteins, important mycobacterial cell wall Ags, could potentially contribute in the initiation of innate immune responses during tuberculosis infection and hence regulate the clinical course of tuberculosis. Artocarpin, a mannose-specific lectin, is a homotetrameric protein (M(r) 65,000) devoid of covalently attached carbohydrates and consists of four isolectins with pI in the range 5-6.5. Investigations of its carbohydrate binding specificity reveal that among monosaccharides, mannose is preferred over glucose. Among mannooligosaccharides, mannotriose (Man alpha 1-3[Man alpha 1-6]Man) and mannopentaose are the strongest ligands followed by Man alpha 1-3Man. Extension of these ligands by GlcNAc at the reducing ends of mannooligosaccharides tested remarkably improves their inhibitory potencies, while substitution of both the alpha 1-3 and alpha 1-6 mannosyl residues of mannotriose and the core pentasaccharide of N-linked glycans (Man alpha 1-3[Man alpha 1-6]Man beta 1-4GlcNAc beta 1-4GlcNAc) by GlcNAc or N-acetyllactosamine in beta 1-2 linkage diminishes their inhibitory potencies. Sialylated oligosaccharides are non-inhibitory. Moreover, the substitution of either alpha 1-3 or alpha 1-6 linked mannosyl residues of M5Gn or both by mannose in alpha 1-2 linkage leads to a considerable reduction of their inhibitory power. Addition of a xylose residue in beta 1-2 linkage to the core pentasaccharide improves the inhibitory activity. Considering the fact that artocarpin has the strongest affinity for the xylose containing hepasaccharide from horseradish peroxidase, which differs significantly from all the mannose/glucose-specific lectins, it should prove a useful tool for the isolation and characterization of glycoproteins displaying such structure.

The dipole moments of thioglycollic (2.28 D), β-mereaptopropionic (2.25 D), thiomalic (2.47 D), malic (3.12 D), and dithiodiacetic (3.17 D) acids have been measured in dioxan at 35° C. Using the scheme of Smith, Ree, Magee and Eyring, the formal charge distribution in and hence the electric moments of these acids have been evaluated, compared with the theoretical moments, and discussed in terms of their various possible structures. Infrared spectra of these acids (liquid and nujol mull) indicate association through hydrogen bonding. These bonds are broken in solution. © 1969.

The electron temperature structure in a weakly ionized plasma is studied allowing the degree of ionization to vary across the shock wave. The values of the electron temperature and the downstream equilibrium temperature obtained with variable ionization are less than those for frozen ionization. The electron temperature rises sharply behind the shock for variable ionization while a gradual increase is predicted by frozen ionization.

Using the treatment of Smith, et al.,1 charge distributions in several aliphatic alcohols and consequently their dipole moments have been evaluated. The dipole moments of trichloroethanol (2.04 D) and 1,3-dichloropropan-2-ol (2.11 D) have been measured in benzene solution at 35°. The results of evaluation and measurements are interpreted in terms of the occurrence of intramolecular interaction between the hydroxyl hydrogen and an acceptor atom X (halogen or oxygen) at the β-carbon atom.

The formal charge distribution and hence the electric moments of a number of halosilanes and their methyl derivatives have been calculated by the method of Image and Image . The difference between the observed and the calculated values in simple halosilanes is attributed to a change in the hybridization of the terminal halogen atom and in methyl halosilanes to the enhanced electron release of the methyl group towards silicon compared with carbon.

Coenzyme Q was found to be distributed in rat liver cell fractions. Mitochondria accounted for only 40–60% of the total. The presence of coenzyme Q in nuclei, isolated by several methods, could always be correlated with the presence of oxidative enzymes. It has been established that coenzyme Q is a constituent of microsomes. Administered coenzyme Q10-C14 was preferentially taken up by mitochondrial and microsomal fractions. Exogenous coenzyme Q appears to be rapidly metabolized.
