An on-line algorithm is developed for the location of single cross point faults in a PLA (FPLA). The main feature of the valgorithm is the determination of a fault set corresponding to the response obtained for a failed test. For the apparently small number of faults in this set, all other tests are generated and a fault table is formed. Subsequently, an adaptive procedure is used to diagnose the fault. Functional equivalence test is carried out to determine the actual fault class if the adaptive testing results in a set of faults with identical tests. The large amount of computation time and storage required in the determination, a priori, of all the fault equivalence classes or in the construction of a fault dictionary are not needed here. A brief study of functional equivalence among the cross point faults is also made.

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy (TR3) has been used to study the effect of solvent polarity on the mechanism and nature of intermediates formed in photoinduced electron-transfer reaction between triplet flouranil ((FL)-F-3) and tetramethylbenzene (TMB). Comparison of the TR3 spectra in polar, nonpolar, and medium polar media suggests that formation of radical anion due to electron-transfer reaction between (FL)-F-3 and TMB is favored in more polar solvents, whereas ketyl radical formation is more favored in less polar media. Compared to ketyl radical, the extent of radical anion formation is negligible in nonpolar solvents. Therefore, it is inferred that in nonpolar media ketyl radical is mainly generated by hydrogen-transfer reaction in the encounter complex between (FL)-F-3 and TMB. In solvents of medium polarity, the ion-pair decay leads to the formation of both ketyl radical and ketyl radical formed from the encounter between triplet state and the donor. Thus, competition between the formation of ketyl radical and ion pair is influenced by the solvent polarity. The nature of the ion pair in different solvent polarity has been investigated from the changes observed in the vibrational frequency of (fluoranil) FL part of the complex.

An oscillatory flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in an elastic tube of variable cross section has been investigated at low Reynolds number. The equations governing, the flow are derived under the assumption that the variation of the cross-section is slow in the axial direction for a tethered tube. The problem is then reduced to that of solving for the excess pressure from a second order ordinary differential equation with complex valued Bessel functions as the coefficients. This equation has been solved numerically for geometries of physiological interest and a comparison is made with some of the known theoretical and experimental results.

Oscillatory flow in a tube of slowly varying cross section is investigated in the presence of a uniform magnetic field in the axial direction. A perturbation solution including steady streaming is presented. The pressure and shear stress on the wall for various parameters governing the flow are discussed. The water-gas shift reaction (WGS) is an important reaction to produce hydrogen. In this study, we have synthesized nanosized catalysts where Pt ion is substituted in the +2 state in TiO2, CeO2, and Ce1-xTixO2-delta. These catalysts have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and it has been shown that Pt2+ in these reducible oxides result in solid solutions like Ti0.99Pt0.01O2-delta, Ce0.8Ti0.15Pt0.02O2-delta, and Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta. These catalysts were tested for the water gas shift reaction both ill the presence and absence of hydrogen. It was shown that Ti0.99Pt0.01O2-delta exhibited higher catalytic activity than Ce0.83Ti0.15Pt0.02O2-delta and Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta. Further, experiments were conducted to determine the deactivation of these catalysts. There was no sintering of Pt and no carbonate formation; therefore, the catalyst did not deactivate even after prolonged reaction. There was no carbonate formation because of the highly acidic nature of Ti4+ ions in the catalysts.

The reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (N3P3Cl6) with sodium p-cresoxide proceeds by a predominantly nongeminal pathway. The presence of geminal isomers at the bis- and tris-stages of substitution in tiny quantities (< 5%) has also been observed. All the chloro(p-cresoxy)cyclotriphosphazenes and their dimethylamino derivatives have been characterized by 1H-, 13C{1H}-, and 31P{1H}-NMR spectroscopy. The reaction of N3P3Cl6 with sodium phenoxide has been reinvestigated. The relative yields of the products at various stages of substitution and their isomeric compositions are almost the same for both phenoxy and p-cresoxy systems. Possible mechanisms to explain the observed isomeric compositions are discussed. A through-space interaction involving oxygen-2p and phosphorus-3d orbitals is invoked to explain the greater yield of the cis isomer of N3P3Cl4(OAr)2 than that of its trans isomer.

Thiophosphoryl fluoride is observed to undergo a facile reaction with sulphur trioxide forming phosphoryl fluoride, sulphur dioxide and elemental sulphur in quantitative yields. In the presence of excess of sulphur trioxide, however, the elemental sulphur released combines with it to form sulphur sesquioxide which subsequently decomposes and gives off sulphur dioxide. Similar observations are made with oleum.

The enthalpies of reaction between aniline and HCHO at various molar proportions under neutral conditions were determined by solution calorimetry. These measurements are new in the field of aniline and HCHO condensation polymers. The specific heats of the products formed were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and were used in the enthalpy calculations. Plots of enthalpy of reaction calculated with respect to aniline and HCHO vs. different A/F molar ratios were made. From the enthalpy data it appears that the reactions between different A/F molar ratios yield different products.

Rice husk ash (about 95% silica) with known physical and chemical characteristics has been reacted with lime and water. The setting process for a lime-excess and a lime-deficient mixture has been investigated. The product of the reaction has been shown to be a calcium silicate hydrate, C-S-H(I)+ by a combination of thermal analysis, XRD and electron microscopy. Formation of C-S-H(I) accounts for the strength of lime-rice husk ash cement.

The Synthesis of three typical polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH) has been described, wherein the Vilsmeier reaction plays a major role. Vilsmeier reaction of the tetraloll gives the dihydronaphthaldehyde 2 which on cyclodehydration gives the dihydroarene 3. Ita dehydrogenation affords 3-methoxybenz[a]anthracene (4). Vilsmeier reaction on the dimethoxydihydronaphthalene 5 gives the versatile dimethoxydihydronaphthaldehyde 6 which has been converted to the dimethoxybenzo[c]fluorene 7 by direct cyclodehydration and the fulvene 10 by cyclodehydration of allylic alcohol 8 derived from 6 followed by dehydrogenation. The saturated alcohol 12 corresponding to 8 undergoes cyclodehydration to give the dimethoxyhexahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene (13). Some of the advantages of the Vilsmeier approach to PAH have been pointed out.

Mycobacterium smegmatis topoisomerase I exhibits several distinctive characteristics among all topoisomerases. The enzyme is devoid of Zn2+fingers found typically in other bacterial type I topoisomerases and binds DNA in a site-specific manner. Using polyclonal antibodies, we demonstrate the high degree of relatedness of the enzyme across mycobacteria but not other bacteria. This absence of cross-reactivity from other bacteria indicates that mycobacterial topoisomerase I has diverged from Escherichia coli and other bacteria. We have investigated further the immunological properties of the enzyme by raising a panel of monoclonal antibodies that recognises different antigenically active regions of the enzyme and binds it with widely varied affinity. Inhibition of a C-terminal domain-specific antibody binding by enzyme-specific and non-specific oligonucleotides suggests the possibility of using these monoclonal antibodies to probe the structure, function and in vivo role of the enzyme.
